Surface rust question from a newbie with bodywork. I have always had late model mustangs so no surface rust on them. I am doing a 69 Nova with surface rust inside the car on the roof and some rust on the metal panels inside, but it's just surface rust. My question is do I strip it down to bare metal or put a rust type inhibitor on the rust or what? Not sure how much work to do to it trying to get it off? Going to be a street/drag car.

If its just surface and not scaley then you can treat it with por 15 or rust stopping primer. http://www.eastwood.com/rust-encapsulator-28601.html
If its a section that gets paint your gonna wanna sand it off.

If you can get to the rust the only to make sure its does not come back is to get ride of it! Grind it blast it or replace the piece. I only use the other stuff in places where access is limited.

Safest rust remover and other similar products do remove the rust, no need to grind as it is gone.
