Maybe I am preaching to the choir but I wanted to share my recent experience. Last June I purchased my first diesel pickup. Its a classic 2007 2500HD with the Duramax/Allison combo. With the research I did one major issue with the 07 and newer diesels was fuel dilution. Being an AMSOIL dealer and learning and understanding the benefits of extended drain intervals I was disappointed in this problem.

The motor oil I used was AMSOIL OE 15W-40. The OE stands for original equipment and is intended for manufacturer drain intervals. I intended on seeing if I had this issue with my truck because I am used to changing oil in my other vehicles 1 year/15,000 miles. Now the only way to actually see if this was an issue was to use oil analysis and see what percentage of fuel was getting in the oil. Over the period of the last year and half I took 3 samples and had them analysed. All 3 reports came back with no issues.

While using the 15W-40 motor oil and having to pull a sample when it was winter I got to understand first hand how well 15W-40 flows when it is cold. It was actually a pain to get my little bottle filled using the pump and 1/4 inch hose. I had never had any issues any other time using different viscosity oils. Now that I confirmed over the last year and half I have no fuel dilution issues I was ready to practice extended drain intervals. It hurts dumping out 10 quarts of oil several times a year plus the time to do it.

So I decided I would use an oil that was designed for extended drain intervals and continue to perform oil analysis to monitor the oils condition. Now I had a couple choices from AMSOIL. Since the truck is 07 and newer the oil needs to meet the CJ-4 spec. That left me with 2 choices.

Now I know the recommended viscosity was 15W-40 and the truck has performed well for the last year and half using that. I decided to go with the other option of 5W-40 which brings me to my experience. I did this last oil change in October when the temps here in Iowa were still warm. I noticed no change in how the truck ran. Now that the temps have dropped the difference is very noticeable.

I remember last winter always thinking that my truck always sounded very loud and could hear no turbo whine until it would start to warm up. I always thought to myself this thing just sounds like it is working hard. With temps in the single digits and using 5W-40 vs the 15W-40 the sound of the engine is a night and day difference. The engine sound is much quieter and I have immediate turbo whine. I also will be able to go 3X the manufacturer drain interval or further with oil analysis. I plan to post my results from oil analysis over the life of this oil.

If you are a diesel owner and using 15W-40 motor oil consider using 5W-40. Undoubtedly, if you are in colder climates you will immediately notice a difference. If you are brand loyal to a company other then AMSOIL see if they offer it, your vehicle will love you for it. If you are unsure where to find this viscosity for your diesel I can ensure you the best price from AMSOIL to your door.

I also want to mention that I had great results with AMSOIL Injector Clean with cold flow. I had zero gelling issues all last winter and it was extremely cold.
