View Full Version : 67 nova rear suspension and a big wheel/ tire combo set up.

plans are to run a 12 1/2 rear wheel, either 18-19's i do not know yet with a 345 tire, need somme help with rear end set up



i just got off the phone with art Morrison chassis shop and from what it sounds like a tri four bar kit, with sway bar won't fit 12.5 wheels on a nova due to how narrow the novas are unlike the camaro which is 5 in inches wider. any body who has done a reared clip and can chime in i would love to hear what u have to say.

We installed 335/30/18's on a customers 67 using our chassis a couple years ago.. that was a 12" wheel. However, we've had a couple guys with 66's that claim there's no way a 335 will fit.
315's are a better bet, using an 11-11.5 wheel... Or you'll have to cut into the floor a little bit to narrow [our] frame rails in.

thanks so much dale for chiming in, i have already cut into the floors for the mini tub, what i was wondering was steve at AME said that the tri-fourbar set up had a certain width it had to be to function properly and since the nova is so narrow that bringing the frame rails in closer would ruin the dynamics of it. But, how in the heck do i fit a wider wheel on that thing if i cannot narrow the frame rail. steve mentioned that i use a four bar set up but from what i have read here, four bar set ups don't function as well as any other set up. in other words they kinda suck for a car that wants to do the occasional road corse....

Thanks for shooting me a PM, I'm happy to contribute to the conversation.

The dimensions I'm going to list below correspond to our FAB9™ worksheet HERE (http://www.cachassisworks.com/cac_worksheets.html).

Typically a 66-67 Nova has an inner fender to fender (A) dimension of right about 67". Our #7154 canted 4-bar rear frame can be built as narrow as 34" (B). A-B= 33". 33" divided by 2 gives you 16.5" (H). H is the width of each wheel tub at it's narrowest.

A 345 tire from sidewall to sidewall when mounted on the wheel is probably just shy of 14" (D) which is an easy number so let's use that.

So if each tub is 16.5" then that leaves you 2.5" per tub for clearance. I would put 1" on the inside (G) and 1.5" on the outside (I) and call it good. More room on the outside makes it slightly easier to get the wheels off.

Please note, all of these numbers are off the top of my head. Always measure your vehicle to ensure correct dimensions.
