Hey All-

Check out what's on the table at Speedtech Performance! Reminiscent of the beautiful southern Utah sunset, this hot new project will bring a sense of awe to all who stick around to watch it.

http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag70/SpeedTechPerformance/1967%20C10/C101hires_zpsaef1d47c.jpg

We've been hankerin' for a hauler for some time now, we needed a good excuse to develop some new suspension parts for the 67-72 C10 crowd. Well this little p'up wandered into the shop lookin' like it had a pretty tough life. It's got quite a history, we'd tell you but we really don't know what it is, lol. Needless to say, there wasn't one matching color panel, it was missing half it's parts, it had rust all over and it looked so bad it would run and hide every time a camera came out. I barely got this first shot while it was hiding behind the paint booth.

http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag70/SpeedTechPerformance/1967%20C10/67C10001_zpsf3b2428f.jpg

After hiding in the corner of the shop for several months the stars aligned and the truck came out with a pretty serious game plan. Instead of simply adapting our suspension to it's battered frame we decided to start fresh. So along with this build will come one of the first of Speedtech's new line of full frame products! These frames will offer super low stance, proprietary front suspension geometry based on our ATS tall spindle, a little bit of a straying away from the norm out back, and some subtle body mods to create a look that hasn't been seen before. This is a side project being built for us to play around with so follow along over the next few months as it all comes together.

The parts list is a long one, starting out with a complete new bed, tailgate, doors, fenders, hood, floor, rockers, and lower cab corner patch panels. Additional patch panels were hand formed to take car of areas we couldn't order. During the process, the firewall got moved back and smoothed a little, and the drip rails got shaved. Topping off the cab mods will also be flush mount glass and a modified cowl panel. These pics are the start of some very cool things to come...

Thanks guys!

There are already a handful of cool trucks in the g machine community, and we're looking forward to doing our version too. Hopefully it will inspire the movement, right now the thing to do with a truck is set the frame on the ground at the car show. That looks cool but usually those type suspensions aren't practical for much more than normal driving or sitting still in the grass. Our aim is to help the C10 guys realize they can have a low stance and wicked handling. With our frame design it should be about the lowest static stance on the market, so with an air ride the rockers should still hit the ground (or be super close). At normal height it will tear up the autocross track and will still drive nice.

Well, most of the truck's parts are in boxes and I suppose photos of boxes wouldn't do much for bling bling numbers so in time we'll post as we go. :)

If you're referring to the new suspension products it's new enough that the individual components are not back from the laser cutter yet. As we get parts assembled and get things put together we'll definitely be posting pics.

Lol! We love the F bodies but there are plenty of other cars out there that need some lovins too. For now on the program are the C10s, A bodies, Tri 5 Chevys and 58-64 Impalas. For the future we're looking into early Mustangs and we'll take it from there.

The goal with all of this is to take what we already know and do well and bring it to the next level of performance in a complete package that is affordable. In doing that we cover the needs of you guys, and keep the doors open and continue bringing new products to market. It's all win win.

I have a 65 Impala, I think it or a 67 would make a killer pro-touring car since they have more "swoopy" lines than the earlier Impalas, IMO

I agree, my dad had a 66 Impala when I was younger and a buddy in high school had a 67 Caprice so I'm partial to both of those bodies. When I was in my 20s I wanted to buy a local 67 Impala that was for sale. The evening I planned to go get it we were doing inventory at work. I told the owner of the car I'd be there at 8:00 and one slacker employee held us all up. I got there at 8:45 and the guy told me he had just sold it 30 minutes ago. Man was I not a happy camper!

The mid+ 60's Impalas may eventually be on the drawing board if the demand is there for it. For now we'll be focusing on the X frame cars, there seems to be a decent amount folks that want something better for those cars.

Great idea to work with the C10. Love the idea of it being able to autox but would also like to hear about it being able to do more than just autox. Rendering is very nice and love the idea of a new frame for the market that isn't a Mustang II spin-off.

Hey Rod- That's a clean looking Impala. We will likely be in the market for a 55 Chevy before we delve in the Impala tho'.

We'll put on the list for 3 frames then grendel! ;)

HB- Let us know what you mean by more than autocross. It should have the same good street manners as any of our current products and with an air system should drop pretty close to the ground for the show guys. It definately won't go rock crawling in Moab, but that's what Jeeps are for. ;)

Ben, you mentioned about it being a shop truck. I'm hoping that means that it can carry light loads in the bed (parts pickups if nothing else) in addition to autox. Too many of the dropped trucks I see can't function at all as a truck after the mods. I think making a truck autox is great, but if that's all if can do and look cool then it's not much different from an F-body. I'm thinking along the lines of the Ford F-150 Lightning - with the exception that it handle much better.

But if not possible not a problem, I just like light duty trucks that can haul 2x4's and haul ass.

the design is about 2/3 done, then laser cutting so I am shooting for the end of November to have it done, there will probably be some minor changes after that but we are shooting for jan to have production units ready to order.

It'll be able to carry a little weight. Of course our goal is geared towards the handling aspect so it may not live up to it's previous life 1/2 ton rating. But then again it'll be based around coilovers so a second pair of heavier springs and 20-30 minutes to swap 'em out may help that. ;)

Thanks for the update Ben. I agree with the handling goal after having driven one back in the day that my father bought and how poorly they drove unless there was some weight in the bed. Still wasn't a canyon carver but it helped. Have you decided on what you'll do to the bed of the truck. I'm thinking some spray in bed liner won't add much weight but would work for "light" duty and keep a touch of the truck roots alive in the design. Just a thought.

The rendering is very cool. Not big on black myself (hate the cleanup factor) but it is striking in the illustration. Are you thinking of a matte clear coat?

Rod in HB

Ben@SpeedTech
10-13-2014, 11:50 AM
We have a truck bed product that we like to use for the underside of the cars we build. It will likely go in the bed of this one too.

It will be gloss black. I was playing around with the sunset reflection to add some style on this rendering so not sure, maybe that takes away from the glossy look?

The wheels are Forgeline's transparent red powdercoat over a polished wheel so we're going to try to duplicate that look as best we can on the hood indention. We'll see how it goes.

Thanks for the compliments!

Could it still be a decent hauler if airsprings are adaptable to the frame/suspension?

I'm also wondering if a complete truck is necessary to start with depending on how many parts you guys are working on.

Ben@SpeedTech
11-03-2014, 03:28 PM
Yes there are some updates. After playing with more color options we've decided to do something different than straight black and make it Oreo two tone. Oreos are "America's" favorite cookie" right? We're also adding some mild ground effects to have it hug the ground and flow the air a little better. One last thing not in the new rendering is that we'll be using a deeper rather than a shallow wheel offset.

http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag70/SpeedTechPerformance/1967%20C10/C10OREO_zpsfc6bfd2f.jpg

Photos coming in a few...

The frame is started. Right now we're waiting on our new forged ATS tall spindles to be completed, which are designed specifically for the new line of frames. Most frames on the market use the Vette spindle, our new spindle has even better geometry than the Vette unit.

In all reality the frames are for handling and looks business first, farm truck second. They will run coilovers in the rear so it's not a big deal to run heavier springs if you plan to haul with it alot. An air helper spring should work great as long as it's brackets want to play nice with the frame design.

Ultimately the goal is to have a truck with the lowest (without bags) static ride height on the market, handle like a well built Camaro, and cruise comfortably too.

flomofo- doors and windows are nice to have, but I suppose they're not required. Lol, j/k. Seriously though, you should be able to take a decent cab and bed off a stock truck and drop it on our frame. Swap the drive train over and then go cruising and racing. If you happen to have a cab and box without a frame, well you're just fine with that.

By far the short bed wins the popularity contest, but we'll have a version for a long bed and we'll be looking into the Blazer too.

Ben@SpeedTech
11-03-2014, 03:49 PM
To visually drop the truck even lower and get the air flow around the rolling brick a little better Jeremy's created some mild side fairings.

Frame updates?

Ben@SpeedTech
12-15-2014, 01:08 PM
The geometry wasn't as good as we first thought so things went back to the computer and we've been redesigning a couple things. I guess that's why they call it research and development, lol!

The goal is to have the best suspension out there period, and to be able to use the same basic design in the C-10, Chevelle, Tri-5 and the Impala frames. Then the design goes into a 2nd gen Camaro subframe after the full frames are in production.

Things are also slowing on the truck as we try to wrap up some customer shop projects before Christmas. We should have more updates in January.

Thanks for staying in touch!

I guess we can't leave well enough alone...

Not long ago Forgeline announced deeper offsets available for the GT3C wheels, so back to the drawing board we went. After a few different options were considered we decided to do the centers in transparent red and the barrels in white. We're after a mild custom yet still out of the box styling with this build so the shoe, or in this case wheel, fits. We talked to Baer and they were able to whip together a little custom bling for the brakes too, which will look great under the wheels. Cool eh? BTW the Speedtech Signature Logo calipers are now available to customers too.

Here's sneak peak of the new frame. This is our prototype chassis posed under Oreo's cab, and is actual static ride height. The cool thing about this is the frame is tucked about even with the stock rockers and it has a full range of normal travel at this height. Now, for you slamarized guys, imagine how easy it would be to put this thing on the ground with a set of bags, which will be an option with the chassis package. In the photo we borrowed wheels from another project to give a feel for sizing. These are 335-30-18s on 18x12 rallies out back and 275-35-18s on 9.5s up front. Our final wheels will be 19s and 20s with 345s out back and 315s up front. This is going to be one killer C10 that has the moves!

The second frame is being cut this week, once welded and double checked for geometry it will be test fit into the truck and then it will be full steam ahead to finish and test drive.
We are going to add an option for the rear suspension as well, you will be able to choose between torque arm or 4 link so we are really excited, we will put both on this truck so we can do back to back testing also.

We are working on pricing right now, expect it to be priced comparably to Roadster Shop and Art Morrison, We have designed the front suspension using our Gen 3 ATS spindle which will be taller then the existing Tall spindle (all on the bottom end) that allows us to achieve WICKED geometry, Actually better geometry than is even achievable using a Corvette spindle. Some of the other specs are the roll center is optimum for low med or high travel suspension strategies. Almost zero bump steer (.008) up to 30 deg of steering (tire size dependant) 95% perfect ackerman. it will achieve optimum tire slip angle for increased front grip. and on and on.

We got the wheels and tires from Forgeline yesterday. WoW!! Some of the shop guys think we're pushing the limits a bit on styling but I say they're totally sick! The transparent red looks wicked and the white rim will tie them into the truck's paint theme. It's like a crazy blend of old school deuce coupe wide whitewalls on red rims and new school pro touring flair and styling with a bit of attitude. Let us know what you think!

We've been pretty slammed in the shop so the in house toys unfortunately get back burnered once in a while, however we'll get back to it soon, we all want to see more progress.

The frame is done so we've been now taking measurements with it mocked up on our 55 Chevy pick up and we're looking at borrowing a customer's 52 and 66 trucks to get measurements for cab and box mounts there too.

BTW the front suspension on this frame is absolutely wicked.

More coming soon...

You will, it's coming soon. We don't want to leak any spy photos until we're ready to start shipping them out though. :secret:

If you haven't heard, we partnered with Ron Sutton to optimize the geometry of this suspension to work with any suspension strategy, it uses the new Next Gen ATS spindle, and we're confident that the numbers are the best on the market, period. It's currently integrated into the truck and A Body frames, and on the computer right now is integrating it into a 1st and 2nd gen F/X body subframe.

Stay tuned for more...

Got some more build pics to share...

First up, minitubs and raising the bar, er, bed. We wanted to still be able to haul a Harley so a big ol' bump in the middle of the bed just wouldn't do. We like to think if we didn't mention it's been raised most folks wouldn't catch it at first glance. First step was widening the tubs. This was simply done but moving the area where the tubs bolted down inward. Same deal inside the bed sides, just moved everything upwards.

This is static ride height. Wouldn't take much by way of bags to drop the rockers on the ground for those that dig that. "How low can you go..." Note that the frame rails and custom formed headers and exhaust are tucked up above the stock rockers so there's no issues with ground clearance through full suspension travel. For those that live in speed bump utopia, there's is plenty of travel to raise it up as needed via the coilovers. The additional parts such as headers will be available for purchase as well.

Here's how we're suggesting to do the bed, looks stock at first glance and although more shallow than normal it's still actually usable. This was pretty easy to do, and our suggestions on how to do so will be included in the frame's instructions.

I only designed the front suspension & steering geometry. The key to making these cars & trucks corner faster is increasing front grip & this will do that.

Having said that, I LOVE the rear suspension layout. The torque arm offers 50/50 torque distribution for excellent corner exit grip. the adjustable panhard bar lets you tune the rear roll center to balance the corner handling. The sway bar arms & coil-over shocks mounted on the outside of the frame is the best mounting strategy.

I did not design this, but that is how I design my stuff when I have the freedom to do it. Having the coil-over shocks mounted wider, quickens the shocks responsiveness, increasing the car/trucks grip & responsiveness. Having the sway bar arms mounted on the outside of the frame allows for the longest bar possible ... and running long arms ... narrows up the sway bar rate adjustment range ... making more of the tuning holes actually usable.

I love this truck and everything done to it. Looks killer. Was there a reason you guys went with the style of lower control arm you did? Will all your newer subframes have this style of control arm or just the truck frames? I'm assuming it was for better clearance?

Ben@SpeedTech
05-14-2015, 02:43 PM
This new lower design does a lot of things, including allowing the shock to be moved outward, as well as providing a bunch of clearance. Part of it looks like a square tube however it is all round tube with a thick reinforcing plate welded to it giving it that squared off look.

More updates...

We've got short billet solid body mounts on to help channel the body over the frame. As a result we're doing a little bit of fab work to help get the driveline angles correct. First part was building a new tunnel cover. This one will stay in Oreo but we'll have a little more refined production design available as an add on for the frame package.

http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag70/SpeedTechPerformance/1967%20C10/67%20C10%20045_zpsdj8hntru.jpg

Next up was modding the back of the cab. This much clearance wouldn't have been necessary had we used our factory height body mounts, so there's two options for everyone with the frame package.

We finally got all the little details worked out on the prototype frames and production #1 frame returned from powdercoating awaiting final assembly.

For a clean engine bay the battery box has been incorporated under the bed. Holes are tapped in the frame on either side for a battery mount. Had we run a really gnarly sound system we could have run dual batteries- one on either side, but we're trying to keep weight down so we opted for a single battery on the right side for better weight distribution.

Custom frame mounts are included, in our case we opted for a 525 hp GM crate LS3 and the stands give the engine just the right position to work around steering and crossmembers.

Here's a cool option, the ATS road race LS oil pan allows for a remote oil filter and the frame is pre-drilled for mounting it on either the right or left side. Super easy to incorporate a cooler in there too.

Needless to say when trying to milk near drifter steering angle with w i d e wheels the frame rails came inboard a bit and required a careful design on the custom stainless headers. Ultimate Headers took on the task of the production units, check out those sick flanges. Awesome!

biggest reason, it is not built as a race or auto X truck. although it will do both for testing. but Funny story...... this started out as a low budget build to prove the frame and suspension. Guess WHAT happened. I got carried away. and it now has a full Leather headliner custom interior. and on and on. Typical Right.
we will do a First Gen that is more race oriented and it will get the floater for sure.

I really like the direction your going with this. That console is pretty trick looking.

On a side note... Did you see that Greening has a Maverick they are giving the PT treatment? I cant wait to see what they do with it.

Ben@SpeedTech

Honestly Mike the budget got tossed out the window as soon as the rendering got done. lol!

In the beginning we intended to do a typical shop truck, and adapt our current suspension parts to the C10 frame. Maybe a nice basic paint scheme using factory colors and a basic interior. LS power was in the line up all along.

Sometimes Pro Touring and budget don't mix unless you're of the street fighter type lineage and just want something you can go out and beat on. On the other hand we didn't want to be with the saran wrap your tires to get across the grass group either, so it's a mix of show and go. I think the budget on where the truck is headed is in line with any typical pro-touring car that could be on display at a show to showcase our products, but not as much as the guys that go all out trying to win street machine of the year. Some areas we tried to save some money for example was we didn't go crazy expensive on the seats, have 10,000 watt stereos, crazy horsepower, turbos, carbon fiber everywhere, billet this and billet that etc. We stuck with the basics and upgraded where we could, usually in subtle areas like using the 2015 truck console parts and doing flush glass. I think Our C10 doesn't need those "I gotta have all the popular parts" items to be cool, it will stand out mostly because of the basic yet in your face paint scheme and the general clean-ness of the overall design.

IT'S ALL MY FAULT!!
I just can't do things 1/2 way. I try not to go over board as well. That is why you don't see pics of the DA sanded transmission tunnel cover, that to me is just a waist of customers money, I mean your going to put dynamat underlay and carpet over it aren't you? why spend the time? things like that to me are just not required.
I think the total cost to build if you included the labor would be about average 100k for a complete redo. A lot of the time in this build was R&D for the new frame and all the accessories so you can't count that. I have a 55 p/u waiting for the next project and I keep thinking "JUST LEAVE IT patina" fix the rust in the floor and put it together............. wanna bet that doesn't happen!!
I tell people when you include paint a full redo project is going to start at about 100. and clime from there based on your "WANTS" we have done this enough times and it always figures about the same 1.00 parts is equal to 1.15- 1.25 $ in labour. so your going to spend 50k on parts and 62k on labor.
oh and I didn't charge or get paid to do all the body and paint!!

I would think an easy 125k total ish, kind of a good $ start point from someone who has no idea how to get something like this project accomplished. many people i talk with think 30-50k.

Yea and 5k for a paint job!! lol this one is painted old fashioned Single stage then color sanded. I find it easier to use about 1/3 the cost ant the finished paint is easier to maintain and keep looking good.

Thanks Pro66. What started out as just another shop truck has turned into something really nice. All the hands that have been in on this have done great work, and we anticipate a cool future for the truck.

We still have the 55 Chevy truck on deck that will get the same suspension and similar frame, so we'll post that one too as things get going later this year. Blake says the 55 will only get the suspension and the patina'd body will stay the same, but he really has issues with "can't leave well enough alone", lol! so I wouldn't doubt it if it comes up along like the 67.

Anyone ever notice the lack of cool dash inserts for these C10s? We did too, there really isn't much support there at all, so we've decided to make one that we can add to our C10 catalog. If you've got a buddy looking for a cool C10 dash upgrade please pass the word! :)

Darren in engineering did a great job designing the 3D model from which we milled the main clusters out of billet, and the thin inserts were laser cut for a perfect fit.

The concept is that the inserts can be easily customized to the truck, brushed, painted, wrapped, print dipped, laser cut carbon fiber, etc.

For our truck we tried a couple options, black and white, black and brushed, ...

... and we finally decided on black with a red rim. The red is the same clear red powder coat that was used on the wheels, brakes, and shocks. The photos don't do it justice, it really is pretty. The back lit gauges are from Speedhut out of Orem, UT, and look killer at night, perfectly matching the light up dials on the Vintage Air controls.

Back to the paint booth to get things "wrapped" up...

We were invited to bring a car to the Super Chevy annual Suspension and handling challenge again this year and they said although the C10 wouldn't be allowed to officially compete and get reviewed in the magazine, we were welcome to bring it, along with the 68 Nova that would compete, to run some track time and compare it to the other attendees. This is what put us into major crunch time to get the truck finished. For that reason and also to simply try it out we opted to do the white portion in 3M vehicle wrap. It's not quite as smooth as a cut and buffed paint, but overall it went on well, has amazing ability to conform to the body's shape, and it really looks good.

Here's a cool feature- we made some tow/tie down brackets that bolt to the lower trailing arm bracket. Note the bracket has 3 positions for easy adjusting of the instant center.

A week ago the truck was finished on Saturday night and loaded into a trailer with our Super Chevy Suspension and Handling Challenge contender '68 Nova to head to California the next morning.

On non-sticky everyday street tires wWith no real tuning other than a quick shock adjustment, right out of the box the truck was faster than the test bed 2015 Z06 Corvette through the slaloms. They also let us a run a few shakedown laps on the road course however because it wasn't competing in the challenge we don't have official lap times to report.

Thanks to Super Chevy magazine, the shake down laps gave us some good feedback and you'll see the results of some tuning at upcoming Goodguys events. Stay tuned to the build thread for an up coming photo shoot and race results.

That is something to be very proud of right there.

Well done guys :trophy-1302:

All the hard work and extra time it took to develop this suspension is paying off. We anticipate some great performance as we get to more events. :)

Some of the crew took the C10 to the Goodguys event in Loveland CO last weekend. First time on an official autocross it took 1st place overall in the truck category and was hanging with most of the faster cars. This is with street tires and no major tuning on the right off the shelf parts. On Sunday it smoked many of the late model cars who were running on sticky tires. Goodguys put on a great event, we had a good time, and the trophy is REALLY cool.

The shakedown runs were helpful, we want to experiment with sway bar rates a little more for upcoming events. We may even slap on a set of road race slicks left over from an old project and see what it's real potential is at an upcoming SCCA event.

Overall things are looking fantastic for our truck and the future of the C10 ExtReme suspension!

We're really excited about where things are going. Speedtech will have a booth at SEMA, # 72004, however the truck will be outside rather than inside with the booth. We will have a C10 frame on display at the booth, along with an ExtReme Camaro Subframe.

Congrats on winning the Goodguys Truck Class Autocross event in Colorado ... on the truck's first time autocrossing. Sweet !

:trophy-1302:

What's more impressive ... is that this is not a stripped down race car. This bad boy has a full custom interior, air conditioning, big stereo & is "Truck Heavy". My only question is ... did jay have a Slushy in the cup holder on the Autocross course?

Thanks Ron! You're right it's not a "race" vehicle at all, it's comfortable, has all the amenities, leather wrapped interior, nice stereo, a shallower than stock but fully functional bed and doesn't have steel tubes everywhere to brace a light weight frame. It's the real deal!

Here is a list of the updates that the truck is getting before SEMA.

Hawk BP30 Brake pads, more aggressive for autoX but wont eat rotors.
Ridetech single adjustables with Speedtech/Rons Secret Sauce custom Specs
Forgeline GA3 Black center red lips 18"
BFG Rival S 315 front and 335 rear.
Drive Junkies Race front drive system.
Solid splined front sway bar. 1250 lb rate.

should up the performance level a couple notches.

On this build we wanted it to be a super comfortable drive to events so we decided to forgo the man pedal and went with a 4L65 auto. Crossmember getting into position and final assembly.

Is that 4L65e stock?

Ben@SpeedTech
11-19-2015, 07:59 AM
Not stock, Hughes built it for us, all kinds of billet stuff and other upgrades to make it handle some serious abuse on the autoX and road course.
