I've been a lurker here at Lateral-G for a while and have found all your projects have been very inspiring and have helped me on my current project. After having my 69 Camaro project for 11 years, it is time for me to share my project.
I started looking for a 69 Camaro in 2000 and finally found my perfect project car in 2003. They guy I bought it from was pretty much making it a Z-28 clone. He was pretty straight forward with me. His dad was the original owner and it was bought in '69 with a straight 6 and butternut yellow. It had been painted twice since the factory...once Canary Yellow, the next time, the blue you see here.

It was by no means a numbers matching car but seemed to be a pretty solid car interior was pretty decent. Plus it means I can make the car the way I want, which is exactly what I was looking for.

and the V8 they put in was aging, but still pretty solid for a driver.

I have done several mechanical upgrades over the period of 10 years. I've been having fun with working on it, driving it, and taking it to the local car shows.

I started having some issues after a couple of years with the old 350 so I decided to start with it. I pulled the motor and the front clip so I could clean everything up as well as I could for the new powerplant.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-jVWZV4H/0/4ac5c5a5/L/23-L.jpg (https://intimidator3.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-jVWZV4H/A)

Clean up went well and I put the new motor in. I went with a built 383 stroker I picked up from a buddy of mine. Everything was fresh, but he had decided to go a different direction with his car. So it worked out perfect. I added the March Performance Pulley kit and a few extras including new control arms, front disc brakes, 2" drop spindles and a set of Centerline Telstars which looked sharper than the old Classic Centerlines it came with.

Upgraded the old 10 Bolt to a Moser Ford 9 inch and added subframe connectors and I was ready to roll again...

Wired my fans and added ceramic coated headers

I added a Thunder Road dash panel with some Autometer Cobalt Gauges and I matching steering wheel and this baby was ready for the track.

I ran it in the Pinks All Out race in 2010 just for fun where it proved to be an 11 second car.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-xZ29pJw/0/9c399a12/L/45-L.jpg (https://intimidator3.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-xZ29pJw/A)

I was happy with this, but I decided it is not the direction I had planned to go with my car. So in 2013, with everything mechanical about the car in very good shape, I decided to tear it down again and begin the most dreaded part...paint and body! I will update with a new post that will take you through this journey thus far... Stay tuned and thanks for reading!

Welcome to Lateral-G. Great read on your journey and adventures with the car. Looks like you have had a lot of fun with it and it seems that a lot more is in store for you. Nothing better than getting out there and having a good time and that's exactly what you are doing.

Looking forward to seeing more of what you do. Any idea on the paint at this point? Going to stay the same or change it up? Seems that car has had just about all the colors on it except red. :D

Thanks guys. @ Curtis - I have settled with going back blue. But this time a more modern GM Color... Luxo Blue.. Here is a reference pic.
http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa316/chevyrebb/C6frt.jpg

I plan for it to be more simple so probably not going back with the rally strips, but something more subtle...when we get to that point.

So here we go. About a year ago at this time, I decided it was time for paint and body and move in a slightly different direction. I knew I did not want this car to end up as just another drag car. That is not why I looked for a 69 Camaro for so long. SO I drove my car over to Camaro Concepts here in Houston. I spoke with Corbin up there and we agreed we agreed I really have to get this baby down to bare metal to see what we are dealing with and go from there. The car is what I would call a 20 footer as in it looked damn good from 20 feet away. Having this car for 10 years I already knew most of the secrets, or at least I hoped... I knew there was body work and rust in some areas, but nothing that Corbin and Roy could not handle. So I began the tear down...

So I pulled the motor and removed my cowl vent. Notice the rust near the bottom of the wind shield....
https://photos.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-JqphBtw/0/8483337e/L/51-L.jpg (https://intimidator3.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-JqphBtw/A)

a little around the back window after I pulled the glass... but not as bad as I thought...whew! Hey look...Butternut Yellow! :P

https://photos.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-VX2wGjP/0/736ff12d/L/55-L.jpg (https://intimidator3.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-VX2wGjP/A)

The trunk pan...well I knew about that...yeah, kinda hard to haul around any dead bodies in that so I will have to replace that. (J/K)

https://photos.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-bt3R7zB/0/10ef195c/L/56-L.jpg (https://intimidator3.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-bt3R7zB/A)

Pulled the interior and yeah, hard to tell how bad, but someone previously tried to put glass over the pinholes looks like... Not looking good for the floorpan...
https://photos.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-nGWjBmD/0/0f9db0c8/L/57-L.jpg (https://intimidator3.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-nGWjBmD/A)

So I got it over to Camaro Concepts and while I was there, they already dropped the rear suspension. Within a week, here is what my car looked like... Ready for blasting!!

https://photos.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-dSSsh9W/0/f6b1669f/L/59-L.jpg (https://intimidator3.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-dSSsh9W/A)

I decided to smooth the firewall. Here is a good before pic...

As I feared, I can see the rust damage around the windshield is pretty extensive. It's okay, Roy and Corbin have seen worse.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-5tN3wT4/0/323ca8f2/L/66-L.jpg (https://intimidator3.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-5tN3wT4/A)

Car is back from blasting. naked and P-coated. I was worried they would start blasting it and suddenly they would say, "where did it go?" luckily, it still had a bit of medal left. :)

Dig the new color! Looks like the body has seen better days, but we have seen worse around here. It sounds like you've got a good team that will get it back into shape and done correctly. Keep at it!!!

Meanwhile, back at the fab shop, my car is getting a lot lighter...

Cut out the cowl, right side cowl shoulder, floor pan, trunk pan, and left rear quarter panel...

At this point, with all that out of the way, I decided to go mini tub and 4-Link rear suspension. So Corbin added that to the parts list for me.

New parts came in and the car starts to go back together. :ups:

Up on the rotisserie to finalize welds and clean-up to prepare installing the 4-Link rear suspension from TCI.

Starting to look like a car again... decided not to try salvaging the doors, so got these doors from Auto Metal Direct. Body lines are pretty true and like all aftermarket body parts, needed some massaging, but the guys at Camaro Concepts were able to fix them right up.

Back at home where my work continues. A big thanks to Camaro Concepts for all the help with the sheet metal work and fab work. They are top-notch and easy to work with. Okay, a few more updates to get y'all to present. Since I got it back this past winter, I worked on seam sealer in the interior and exterior. Also worked on the surface rust in places to help preserve the car for the winter since I did not yet have a paint shop lined up that did not have a 9 month waiting period. So I worked on the interior first. I cleaned and applied #M Seam sealer to all seams. I stripped any rust off and e-coating with a rotary nylon abrasive brush. (Thanks Sonar Chief) I then cleaned, taped off and shot the areas with Eastwood's Epoxy Primer to seal it well.

This was just to get it by as I did not want this thing sitting in Houston humidity and just rust away since I suddenly found out I was going to be traveling quite a bit for work in the first half of the year and will have less time to try to get this finalized to go to paint. (Work always seems to delay major projects like this :P)

Fronts are on the way.

Next update will have the latest progress as of 9/26/14. I will then be posting as it moves along. I finally have it at a local paint shop after hunting all summer. Great shop and has been doing excellent work so far and it is getting really close to paint now.

Okay, so it has been over at the paint shop where it has gone back on the rotisserie. The bottom sealed, primed, blocked and shot with semi-gloss black. Here's a couple of shots after it was rolled out of the paint booth. Sorry, pics taken from my phone...

Okay, a few more updates to get ya'll to present.

You are very welcome .... its not a fun way to spend an afternoon, but its gotta get done. Very nicely done .... good that its in epoxy, I have some spraying to do on the underside, Yipee!

Just an FYI ... I used Eastwood Frame coating under the seat frames there cuz when I cut into them for the sub frame connectors there was RUST, so I sprayed away before I weld the top back on.

Good project. I can appreciate the time it took to find the car that seems to be the right one. I'm still looking for the "right" '69 fpr myself. Good color choice and a interesting build story. The neat thing that I like about the '60's cars is that they have lasted so long. Yes there's some rust damage, but compared to the thinner metal of cars of today these are more saveable. And they have character which is not common on modern cars. Definitely can appreciate needing to get the metal covered to avoid new rust in the Houston environment,

Keep up the good work and let us know your progress when you can.

Okay, small update. I went by the paint shop and they are hard at work prepping it for paint and blocking the crap out of it. The plan is to shoot the firewall, cowl and interior dash with primer/sealer tomorrow followed by painting it the same final color as the rest of the car. Rest of interior is painted (nothing special, just went with semi-flat black since it will all be covered by Dynomat and anyway) Firewall is being blocked to perfection.

Inside of the fenders already got their treatment of Luxo Blue Metallic and exterior being blocked and prepped.

Kind of a blurry pic, but the inside of the fender looked suited for a very good quality exterior paint job.

I think that Luxo blue is Lemans Blue.

It was a late C5 color and then a C6 color until 2007.

Here is my lemans blue c6 out in the sun.

Thanks Bonecrrusher.

You are correct. That color debuted as Lemans Blue on the 2004 Z06. Since then, GM has used it under different labels on other vehicles under different names including Blue Topaz and Xenon on the Cadillac, and even Heritage Blue on the 2014 Trucks. They are all WA933L paint code. Loved that color the first time I saw it. With blasting the car and replacing sheet metal, I could paint it any color I wanted. I think I am glad I stuck with blue judging how great the color has turned out. Your car looks great, too!

Was able t make it by the shop yesterday. Still a couple more tweaks to be done before I bring it home, but still progressing. Pictures really don't do justice on how it really looks in person, but these two shots probably give the best perspective.

This shot was taken when it was fresh out of paint:

Meanwhile, the parts for my old steering column came in, so I was able to finish rebuilding it. I cleaned everything up and painted it. I then replaced the tumbler, turn signal switch, all the bearings and finished it off with a billet turn signal lever and flasher button. Sorry, no pictures as I did it, but I you can find a video on Youtube as I did that will step you through the whole process. It was surprisingly easy to disassemble and reassemble. :)

Thanks, guys. Yeah I'm really pleased and pumped up to get this thing back together. But I have a long way to go. I still have to get the wiring back in it, window glass, brake lines, fuel tank, exhaust, motor, interior, etc...you know the drill... But in the mean time, you're right...it does look good :) I have all winter to work on it, and lookie there....Christmas is right around the corner...how convenient. I just need to pass my list to Santa and maybe a Christmas miracle will happen...lol!

Good thing is, I have most everything and just need to install. Very few things left I need to order. It is just going to be slow and a lot of blue tape. You should have seen how careful I was just putting the bumper on.

Have not been able to do much work on it in the last 3 weekends between Christmas and work, except mount the front wheels on...until today... :)

Had to take the grill out to work on more of the wiring.

Boy that's beautiful! What size and back spacing are the back wheels? They look perfect with that color.

The backs are 19X12 with 5.5 inch backspace. Tires are 345/40 ZR19 Nitto Invo's. It is a TCI 4- Link in the back with minitubs that Camaro Concepts did one hell of a job on. It is easy to take apart too. I have had the rear suspension out twice since it was done and had it out in 30-40 minutes.

The front are 18X8's with a standard backspace. Tires I went with 245/40's.

Thanks everyone for the complements! I was saying the other day what I like about this the most is it is like starting with a blank canvas and I put it back together the way I want. It is nerve-racking working on it. I use lots of tape and blankets when working on it. I don't want to put the first scratch on it yet! No one wants to get near it either, but I'm sure I 'll get some help when I am ready to drop the motor back in it. :)

Thanks, William. I forget, you still in the Woodlands/Spring area?

Wow man just getting back to this thread and I've missed a LOT! VERY impressed with the work you've got accomplished and that paint job is KILLER! I've heard Marcel does good work. Tim (GAP) has recommended him to a few people I know.

I am not in that area anymore. Currently living in Spring Branch but likely to move back up north a little bit next year (Jersey Village maybe).

Where are you located? I'd love to come check out the car! Cant wait to see it completed and rolling around. Lot of nice first gens being built right now in the Houston area!

Keep up the good work and keep the updates coming!

Thanks, guys.

Alright, been a little while. Hope everyone had a good Christmas and new year. (argh! curse you burnt out Christmas light!)

https://photos.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-8V53Lm5/0/2003c939/M/IMG_3422-M.jpg (https://intimidator3.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-8V53Lm5/A)

Okay, so a lot of my family got me gift cards for Jegs, Ecklers, Summit, and Amazon. So, shortly after Christmas, I had a couple of things show up on my doorstep. :ups:

https://photos.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-VSfD3XG/0/084c0c84/M/IMG_3599-M.jpg (https://intimidator3.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-VSfD3XG/A)

Well, shortly after that, cold, rainey weather, work stuff, and a six year old dominated my time. BUT I finally found myself back in the garage. No pictures on this one, but rolled out the 1/4" Dynaliner on top of the Dynamat inside the cab. Started wrapping up the wiring and everything was working, except the headlights. Check all the grounds, fuses, and tested all connections. Think I traced it down to the dimmer switch on the floor board. Local parts did not have it, so I ordered it (A little left on the Gift Card!)
While I wait on that, I shift over to brakes. Installed the new master cylinder and started work on the stainless lines.

Realized I had to remove the subframe connectors and DS loop to run them right, but got 'er done. (one good thing about bolt in  )

Looked around and admiring the bottom of the car and wow, the rear-end yoke looks like a$$ compared to the rest of it. haha

Anyway, I got the dimmer switch in and I was skeptical, but I hooked it up and voila! All lights working. So I decided to start buttoning up the front and put he grill back in.

...and even the bumper. A quick light check and we are looking good.

That's it for now. I am trying to dedicate an hour each night during the week to work on this thing. Hopefully I can keep it going until the weekend. Spring is quickly approaching. Gotta pull the 383 back out of plastic wrap and do some finishing touches to prepare to drop it back in soon. That'll drop the front in down where it should be too!

Everyone's projects are looking great! ...and thanks for lookin' at mine!

Thanks, guys.

Small update. I've just been tweeking things on the interior and wiring, a lot of work, but nothing worth posting, other than I got a set of optical LED halo headlights in and installed those...

Other than that, I turn my attention to the 383. Got to freshen it up a little. Good, solid engine. I only had it in the car 4 1/2 years when I pulled it out started this adventure. Only made a handful of passes on the track. Just needs a little cleaning and touching up. Maybe replace the water pump and power steering pump with billet. Already have the pulley system.

Yeah, thanks again, Rob for holding the glass and helping drop it in when you were over. It would have been nerve racking trying to hold the glass and adjust it while worrying about scratching that new paint. Lol. Yeah, the motor is ready. Problem is, the last ime I checked it is 100% chance of rain this weekend. So I'll play it by ear.

Thanks, Chief. Here's the link from e-bay. Not too bad. The LED HALO's are really bright. But the bulb for the headlights were a little yellowish in comparison, so I went to auto arts switched the bulbs out for a whiter bulb. Looks good now. Can't complain for the price. :G-Dub:

Gotta get a new belt since I am taking the vacuum pump out of the equation to make it more streetable. Just going with duel breathers on the new valve covers.
Previous picture from when I first put the motor in the car before the massive teardown and paint:

Focusing on the front of the car, I like these headlights, but the only thing, they are apparently slightly smaller than the original 7" headlights.

Moving on to the interior, I began to lay the molded carpet. Went with cut pile instead of loop to give it that more modern feel. Great pre-molded kit. Just had to line up and cut bolt holes out and trim slightly in places.

Still cranking along. Spring is here and got all the yard and garden stuff done the past couple of weekends so now I can turn my attention back to the Beast. Got a couple of big items this week.
:ups:

I went with Stainless Works on my Headers. Looks to be really good quality... except for the greasy finger prints left on this one from the factory! :knokwood: No worries, it wiped right off. Heard a lot of good feedback on these, and so far, I am not disappointed.

The stainless fuel tank from Rick's Hotrod Shop is off the hook! It's a shame something this pretty will mostly be hidden under the car.

Supposed to rain like the next 7 days straight. Need a good sunny day to drop the motor in. No worries, I can work on interior stuff. Got my new window track in, so I can finally get the passenger glass in. The old track had been "engineered" which explains why the nylon rollers on the regulator were in such bad shape. :badidea: (the original door took a hit 2 paint jobs ago with the original owner and I guess they tried to salvage the track)
https://photos.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-DVbfBbT/0/8c66411f/M/IMG_3948-M.jpg (https://intimidator3.smugmug.com/Other/Photobucket/i-DVbfBbT/A)

Got some brand new rollers on the regulators now, but this track would have destroyed all the work...lol

That's it for now. I'll see what I can get done this weekend.

Yeah, but he was a trooper. The motor mounts wanted to flex and it would have hit that firewall if he had not held the hoist in place while we stabilized the back end of the motor. Hell of a friend. For that, I let him have a few extras:cheers: :happy23:

Quick update. Drilled the holes in the new floorpan to mount my shifter back in and finish installing the front half of the carpet.

Once I got all that lined up, I went ahead and put the original console back in it for now. I still have to trim the sides of the carpet, but I will wait until the kick panels come in.

and this one is just me playing around with ideas. I have the old A/C control panel in there just to fill the hole until I figure something else out, but I cut a little piece of the faux carbon fiber and mounted the LED's for left turn, right turn, brights and brake and mounted it where the fan switch used to go. lol.

Been awhile since an update. We had a boatload of rain, and then a tropical storm. Still working on a lot of detail things in the garage. Some more wiring and fabbing some brackets. I'll post pics of my Blaster SS coil bracket tomorrow, but I got it mounted on the back of the intake. I think I was inspired by a couple of builds here with the same concept. I think it was Vega$69. So thanks for the idea. Looks like it will work. I do have a few pics for this update. First, mocking up the SW Headers. Fit pretty well. I think they will work.

I went ahead and cleaned up the original wiper motor and mounted it. Those Detroit Speed wiper motors look great, but I just don't see spending $500 on a something I will probably never turn on, when I can spend it elsewhere.

Quick update. It's been awhile, but work got in the way for a bit. Traveled to Wyoming twice for work since the last update, but got back and was able to knock out a lot of detailed work.
Update on the headliner. A bit of a PITA, but just took my time and did one section per night. Office binder clips helped a lot.

The trick is, you pull the front and back tight first, then you can move to securing the sides. There will be wrinkles at first, but you keep working at it and with the help of a heat gun, you are able to work out those little wrinkles. It just takes time and persistence.

My seats came in from Corbeau and the 3- point harnesses from Miller. The seats don't sit too high, but I am only about 6'1'. I hear a lot of stories on aftermarket seat brackets sitting too high, but these will work for me.
These seats are black leather, but the lighting in the picture make them look charcoal. They are black though.

Almost complete. It's funny, it smells like a brand new car inside, but somehow, I am going to miss that classic old car smell... I think I will deal with the new leather smell. :)

Lastly, I got my radiator back. Had a buddy weld the aluminum bungs on it so I could do AN fittings and stainless braided hose top and bottom. Now I can finish the wiring for the fans and cover it up with braided wired loom.

Did not take any pictures of it yet, but I got the back seat back in. I modified it for the mini tubs per instructions I found on this site. It worked like a charm and fits perfect.

Going to work on a few more things to tighten down and finish bleeding brakes. (found a small leak previously, but no biggie.) Then I will take to Marcel for front and rear glass and final touches. It is almost road worthy!

If you don't mind me asking, what size waist are you? I'm asking because I looked at the Corbeau GTS II also, but Corbeau recommends for up to a 38" waist. Well I'm 6'3" 275 with a 38 waist, so wasn't sure if I would have head room issues or if my lats, waist or bottom would feel crammed. I see you state you're 6'1" but not sure if your having comfort issues or head clearance issues.

Any help is greatly appreciated, Mark

It's funny you say that, I am like a 36" waist but no comfort issues. However, they do sit a little high and I mean just a little. There is a thread though somewhere on here that I have got to find. There was a guy that took the brackets that come with these seats and he cut a rewelded so they would drop a little lower. I did not think I would have to do this because if I remember, he was taller than me. Now just to give myself an extra inch or so of headroom, I am considering it. Don't get me wrong, I don't hit my head or anything, but it is a little close. Great seats, though.

Edit: If you look close at a couple of the pics on the previous page, you can just about see how I am sitting. Now you being a couple inches taller than me, I'm not sure how much of a difference it would be for you. Sorry, I know it is tough when you spend that kind of money, you try to avoid having to send them back. How do your factory seats sit you?

So this past Saturday night, the local car show was holding its first of the year "Cruise In."

So I finished putting the Camaro back together and even put in a new rear package tray

A buddy of mine just got his '66 Dodge Charger back from paint, so we cruised them together to the car show...

Although, it got a little chilly, it turned out to be a pretty good night at the Niftee 50ees Cruise In with friends, family, and even met some Lat-G members.

Thanks! Come on March! At least I think when they start doing this every weekend until November. It is a blast!

Anyone in the Spring area know if they still do Coffee and Cars at Vintage Park? They have not updated the site since mid December.

I think they started doing it again, but I've been going to the Woodlands show at 1st Sunday of the month in the mall. Much more relaxed.

I could not remember your screen name glad you posted in my thread. Car is so sick man loved everything about it and really love it even more that I got to read this thread. Really is cool when you see something in person and look back at what it was transformed from. Great job Kenny love every detail you did on this car especially the color is so awesome in person. Look forward to meeting you again hopefully with my car this time. LOL

Just got through transferring links from Photobucket to a new photo storage. I did not want to pay Photobucket $400 to fix the broken links, so I just sat here this morning updating all the links.

Anyway, have not updated in a while, so might as well throw one more down.

Just been driving it and going to the local cruise-ins.

Oh, and I went to the dark side...

Sorry about getting raped by PB, I'm glad I never used them. The $400 they want for hosting is several times what anywhere else charges and more importantly is money that can go toward car parts.

The car looks and sounds great with the FiTech setup.

I would love to know what you think of the Fitech system? I'm considering it on my build with a 383.

Thanks!
