View Full Version : 69 Camaro lsx 427 turbo build (AKA) Sinister

Hello
This introduction/build thread is long overdue! I've been reading and looking at this site for inspiration and ideas for quite some time. I was fortunate enough to have come across a rust free 69 Camaro out of California quite a few years back and started a pro-street style build. At the start of the build (2002) the first thing i did was strip the car down to a bare shell and put in a Chris Alston 4-link and cage. I purchased a ls6 and 6-speed and started to set it up for the strip! I had never really seen a pro-touring style car let alone anything with ls power back then. But the car was put aside as life got in the way and she was put into Por-15 and storage for a few years. I worked in a body/performance shop restoring and fixing everyones car but mine. Eventually i started to see some serious pro-touring cars online and in various forums and thats when i decided that will be the new direction for the car. So after a marriage and 2 kids and a couple other car restorations it was time to get back to the Camaro! You will see in some of my pics some rework and change of direction as the build progresses. I wish I would have started this thread from day one but I didn't even know about this site back then! I will post some pics of the car then and in it's early stages to try and put together a complete build thread.
Welcome!!!! Hurry with the pictures. We now have two Sinister builds!!:popcorn2:

OK sorry for the delay in pics guys!!! I had to get back to my home computer. Here is the car as it sat back in 98. Original 327 4spd 12bolt rear car with 40,000miles on the clock and all the original paperwork and black plates. I wish i had pics of all the teardown and chassis work but at that time i didn't carry around a fancy phone with a camera in it!

Here are some pics after we pulled it out of storage (2005) The first thing we did was strip off the Por-15 and get working on the body as it was so solid we figured we would get it into paint as soon as possible then get back to the motor work. Sorry the pics from way back suck but it will give you a idea. Not a spec of rust on the car and all original panels! that defiantly made things easier!

Next up primer and a lot of blocking, also a quick few shots of the underside. Dse quadralink and mini tubs installed with subframe connectors and 2 coat of lizard skin.

Thanks! It started out as BMW Space Grey metallic but after spraying a test panel we modified it with a touch extra black and purple so it turned out as a custom mix.

I have some more pics of paint and i wanted to try out the year one fiberglass hood and trunk lid. also the Marquez design lower valance as were going to run a nice big turbo and put the intercooler up front.

Heres some pics to show the front subframe. We wanted something light that would have a ton of clearance for the turbo exhaust. You will see our dirty mock up ls motor were using for now to build our stainless headers. The Radiator and intercooler is going to be a test as were basically splitting a semi intercooler and using the top half as a crossflow rad.

Yes a rust free car is the way to go if you can find them! I've built cars in the past that by the time I was done chasing rust there wasn't any $$$ left for the fun stuff!!! Lol

Sweet... Have you decided on direction of suspension choice and wheels?
Rear suspension will be Dse quadralink and up front were using a martz chassis bare frame to start since it will be modified to work with our turbo piping. Wheels are going to be Rushforth 18 and 19s

Front sub is Martz chassis. I think it's got to be one of the lightest ones out there? There really isn't much to it and since I had it from another build I figured I would use it. It does flex quite a lot during mock ups so we decided to tie the cage into it and it's solid now!!! Cutouts you see are going to be for the turbo crossover pipe as I wanted to try and run it under and through the frame so I can go around the a/c compressor.

Ok back to putting up some pics! These pics show intercooler and rad finished and polished. Front suspension powder coated and going together with Baer track claw brakes. I jumped the gun putting the front sheet metal on since i still need to paint the backsides of the fenders. I still have a ton of work without fenders on to do but i just couldn't wait to see some more of the car together!

Yes strut rod is way out there and is going to be a problem if i want to run a big tire! No 275s on the front of this car! I did my mock ups with a 255 on a 8" rim and its pretty good but does touch the frame the exact same time it hits the strut rod. We will see how she turns?

I figured you had mocked it up to check. I am running into problems on mine (not the same clip) , so I am sensitive to turning radius problems. LOL

Next up we have the LS6 that i had planned on using but never did. It was however used for most of the mock up and fitted with parts i did end up using. Valve Covers, Turn one p/s pump, flywheel, balancer etc...

Once i pulled everything back off the front end to start fitting the motor for the turbo work i realized i wanted the smooth firewall. I thank this site for that bit of rework! LOL
I ordered up the firewall plate from Mikes custom cars and started in on the installation. Once again back to the paint booth, but I'm happy with the result!

Ive got some messages for more pics so here ya go! And yes those are my roller wheels. Lol

Valve covers are Morroso slant edge fabricated alum and there definitely a nice quality piece. It was hard to have to cut into them for turbo clearance. I'm going to try and get some more pics up tonight.

Finally i get to update the motor progress!
I have to thank Seth and the boys over at ERL Performance for putting together this boost ready dry sleeved ls3 427. Fully Blueprinted short block Fitted with custom made forged Wiseco pistons, GFX rings, Callies billet rods, Callies crankshaft and ARP main studs! The plan is to make 800-1000hp and by the looks of this bullet proof bottom end this should get us there!

The a/c bracket is from street and performance, and was nice in the fact that it tucked my compressor (sanden 508) tight to the block. But it was definitely one of those parts that you buy and open the package and say i could have made that! So for $350 i would recommend making one yourself. I have a lot of pics of it if your interested.

Heres a few pics of the West coast racing (all-pro) lsa cyl heads and a few other parts to finish off the engine assembly. Special thanks goes out to Richard at WCCH for taking the time to discuss and figure out what would work best for my application. We came up with Gm lsa castings with his stage 2 port program, Inconel exhaust valves, Brian Tooley Platinum dual spring kit, CHE Precision Rocker arms. Other pics are Ls3 intake, Ls9 Head gaskets, Comp Cams valve train Pieces and the collection of Arp bolts.

Heres updates on the dash and gauges. I ordered up a custom set of speed hut gauges and I'm super happy with them as they turned out great! I ordered up the GPS speedo and 8k tach. I had them put LSX and Sinister on the face as thought that was fitting! It was a little stressful cutting into the DSE dash and figuring out gauge layout but I'm happy with how it turned out.

Next up is some cage rework. Since day one my wife has been on my case about the cage and how will we ever fit kids in the back of the car. Well when i started the car/cage we didn't have kids and my answer was always no kids will ever be riding in this car!!! LOL Well 2 kids later I've had to compromise and do something I've been dreading and thats cut into and modify the cage. Not only to fit two kids but there car seats if i want to go cruising with them. So i removed all the centre bars ( first pic ) then i bent up some chromoly to follow the roofline and go through the rear speaker shelf where the bars bolt to another set that goes down to the rear frame rails. While i was at it i figured it would be a good time to modify the DSE shock support and trunk floor to allow my exhaust to pass between the tires and fuel tank.

Thanks and yes i can't really believe I'm building this car painted either! I blame this site for that. LOL I had never planned on taking it to this level as it was "supposed" to be a nice paint job, stock interior, mostly stock suspension and a ls1/6 speed car but it has evolved and taken on a life of its own. I guess thats part of the problem with building a car over several years. New parts come out and my wants changed to needs. But yes building a car painted has been very challenging and extra time consuming.

Is it me or are those down tubes running into the seat? How will the kiddos be able to sit back there? Just curious.
6t9 camaro
03-26-2015, 07:40 AM
I removed the upper down tubes that went Into the trunk but I left the tubes that go into the lower seat and tie into the upper quadralink mounts. It's not exactly comfortable for anybody to sit back there but now it's at least possible if need be.

Finally got to the fuel tank! I called up hector from Ricks tanks and told him i needed a stainless custom size tank as i wanted to run my mufflers on either side. So they narrowed it 3" per side and made it deeper to accommodate for the lost fuel volume. I had them weld a flange on the sides to allow me to position it where i wanted and bolt through the trunk floor to eliminate the tank straps. Ricks did a beautiful job as i am more than happy with it! Since were shooting for 1000hp We decided to go with twin 330lph bosch pumps. We will run one steady and as boost ramps up and engine demands more fuel the holley dominator ecu will control the second pump. Heres a few pics of the install and finally getting the car up on blocks which the wheels on and back end going together.

I wish i had some pics of the evaporator bracket bolted up under the dash to show you but i can't find any! It does however bolt to a dash support bracket in the centre of the dash as well as to an existing hole above the pass side kick panel. For how tight everything gets up there i would recommend it to ease trying to fab something up. ( hope that made sense ? )

Once the 78mm precision turbo came in I did have to modify the housing as it was bigger than our mock up. We got it tucked in and fit right where it needs to be but its tight around the waste gate and i had to adjust the thermostat housing a "pinch" lol . Once that was done i could finally finish all the waste gate and exhaust on the pass side!

Yes I know I can't believe I've been doing most of this with a painted car either! That definatly wasn't the plan! When I started this car I knew what I wanted and built/fit everything painted it and then put the project on hold for awhile! That was a mistake as I spent a lot of time on this site and changed my mind and direction! Costing me a lot of time and $$$ lol. But building it painted has made me pay a lot more attention to detail and learnt a lot about patience! Lol

Is that a coolant reservoir on the drivers side beside the radiator? If so, where did it come from? Looks like something I've been looking for.
Sweet build that motor is killer. Love the color, wheels, tires and stance too.
Thanks guys!

So i finally got the exhaust finished up After being mocked up i don't know how many times! Its complete stainless from the headers to the tailpipes and heat wrapped wherever its within 1 inch of touching anything! It was tricky fitting it around the DSE Quadralink suspension but having the trunk floor notched and fuel tank narrowed it turned out real nice! Ive got 3" header pipes crossing under the car and merging into the turbo and a 5" pipe coming off the turbo to a 5" braided flex then to a Borla Xr1 muffler ( mid car ) then I split the 5" pipe into two 3" pipes just before the diff. I managed to fit the 3" pipes in and around the suspension to the rear two Borla Xr1 mufflers on each side of the fuel tank. So even though it's a turbo car i really wanted that classic duel exhaust sound and look! Heres a few under car pics. ( sorry the pic qualities not so great! )

Well it was finally nice to get the car outside into some natural light! It was early and cold out but its was worth it as I'm taking it to "the shop" to get her up and running. If all goes well i will get some dyno time and hopefully get her dialed in with some base line RWHP #s

Well time on the dyno turned out pretty good! We had no breakdowns so thats always good! We got her up and running and it sounds AWESOME!!!! It has a nice deep rumble (thanks Borla XR1). For the first bit we just went over all the basics in the tune and wow you can really dig deep into the dominator ECU! Thank God my brothers the tuner so he knows what he's doing and spent a lot of extra time getting everything just right before and after startup! We did a lot of part throttle pulls to get everything warmed up to check temps and fluids/throttle responce and all that good stuff. Once we started to get into the mid throttle pulls and log some data i knew this thing was going to be a real monster! Soon as it starts building some boost the turbo just sounds so awesome and the power just starts to build fast! I did have some issues with the engine and air intake temp as i always thought we might! My Rad and intercooler that i built into one unit isn't going to cut it! The air intake temp was getting up there so we limited the tuning up to 12psi and cut the "long" night short with engine temps getting higher than we wanted to see. (My F-body ls1 fans just aren't cutting it!) So we ended up at 678rwhp at about 6500rpm with 12psi. Im happy with that as we tuned pretty conservative with a pump gas street tune. My personal goal is 800rwhp so once i get the intercooler reworked and the big A$$ rad that i already had pre-ordered and sitting on the shelf from auto-rad installed we will see what happens! LOL.

Oh and heres a few of the Auto-rad radiator and fan setup. Beautiful piece! Those guys make a nice product!!! They told me its the same core and fan set-up used in Baja trucks so if this doesn't keep the Camaro cool I've got other problems! LOL

Took awhile but i managed to get the intercooler installed! tucked it in behind the grille and built a small air dam on the lower valance opening to direct even more air up to it. Put the front Back together and cleaned her up!

I installed some rad close out pieces to give it a cleaner look as well as direct some more air through the rad. I also detailed the engine bay up to get ready for the World of Wheels car show.

last dyno session we cut short at 678rwhp. New intercooler and some rework later were going back next week to get 800rwhp. I will stop it at 800 since thats my goal and more than enough for me!

It was a good day and a bad day! It was bad in the fact that i had to let someone else touch my car! Lol Its the first time since i started the build I've let someone other than family touch my car and I'm not a big fan of that! I booked it in for a 4 wheel alignment at the local Chevy dealer (supposed to be best alignment guys in town!) but the tech wasn't to happy that I taped up all the adjustment points so he wouldn't scratch them and I also watched him the whole time. We also argued that he doesn't need a road test to "see how it feels". The Good part is i got it outta there without a scratch! it didn't need much adjustment and the alignment is bang on and feels awesome! Time to Go put some miles on!!!

Well i think i can say my car is pretty much done! My son and i have been driving everywhere and are loving the car! We've done a few road trips (lots to the local ice-cream spot) We have put on about 2000 trouble free miles and everything is working as it should! The car rides great! TONS of power, and the a/c blows nice and cold! My sons favourite chant is turbo, turbo, turbo as he likes the pull from the power and the sound the blow off valve makes when i let off the gas! LOL Heres a few more pics of us on the road!

Ahahahaha oh ya i know! This car has gone through many rounds of modifications and upgrades along the way and Its put me way over budget! lol. I guess thats what happens when you take ten years to build and follow along with the amazing builds on this site! Ive actually purchased a few other cars/trucks to add to the collection and start builds on with some ideas that I've been wanting to do.

Well i thought i would post an update since I've been driving for awhile now and my family and i have been loving the this car! lots of cruises, car shows etc... The good and bad though is i have purchased a few "future projects" and i would like to start on them with my kids sooner than later so I'm thinking of putting the Camaro up for sale! ( never thought id say that???) Im thinking of building a pro touring style station wagon for the family to cruise in as the Camaros just to small and crazy! Plus I've already started on a more tame version 68 Camaro and C10 truck thats going to be taking up a lot of time! Since I've had this car almost 15 years This decision has not come lightly but i think its time to put her up in the for sale section soon?!?!? :snapout:
