I changed oil in my engine, I am not sure but I think it was minimum straight 50, ATLEAST in it.... From previous owner, I dont remember what he said, but it was SUPER thick

I now run 10w40 Synthetic, and now the engine sounds like a Mechanical lifter engine. It was sound before too, but not as much.

I dont think there is something wrong, but oh my, how much more sound that comes from it. Maybe the very thick oil Works as an "sound deadener"?

What is others experience on valvetrain noise vs oil type and viscosity?

The previous owner might have been trying to hide the noise by using heavy oil. I would start by pulling the valve covers and checking the preload on the lifters. What engine is it?

Maybe he did, It is a Pontiac 461 Stroker, I have checked the preload.

80psi Cold idle oil press, when i have driven it hard it is at 35 at low idle, 80 at hot RPM. I do not have an oil temp gauge.

It was also overfilled...

I dont know, but could it be that the lifters is getting pumped "harder" With the thinner oil? Especially if it got any air in the oil from the overfilling, that sure would be "springy" in the lifters.

There is probably a lot of sound from the rockers too, they are 1.65s

Now I have gotten used to the sound anyway. It is not as much as first, when it surprised me somewhat.

When I bought it, it had Flowmaster mufflers, that made more noise than anything other on the car so, there where absolutely no noises at all then.. He..He.. :D

I have heard on the engine everywhere With a "stetoscope" (well.. a screwdriver..) and it sounds fine then, it seems like the distributor acts as an speaker for the sounds via the camshaft actually.
