I've said that this will be a race capable street street car --or the other way around...not sure.

The plan is pretty standard.

DSE Catalog for Chevy II
LS powertrain TBD
T56 Magnum and other drivetrain goodies from Bowler
C6Z06 brakes to start with
Pretty stripped down minimal interior
Full Cage
Blah, blah, blah

I bought the car for really cheap, knowing fully that it was a beat up, rusty old drag car from the midwest and would need just about every panel...but it was cheap and I like to do fab work, so here we go.

Here is what I started with.

Here it is when I brought it home and started to tear into it --- it was even more rusty than I thought.........are they ever less rusty?

Skip over a bunch of pictures of me simply documenting how rusty it is and here it is on the nice frame table that Billy from B&B Classics hooked me up with.

Here are few of the bracing I started with on the body. Not the prettiest tubing, but I had it laying around.

Rear framerail locators (these will be needed later) and help support the body.

Fitting up some 2X5" 1/8" wall tubing that will be tied into the inner rockers (new inner and outer rockers). This is an idea that I blatantly stole from DSE. They did this on Cheryl Herrick's car.

I won't bore you with pictures of all of the replacement panels - you'll get to see them eventually (I hope) once I get them on the car.

Door all fitted and gaps aligned etc.... then the rockers were removed.

Another brace and some locator bushings for the front of the framerails (sorry about my finger in the picture).

I don't know why, but some Facebook pictures will not link correctly........... arghhhh

starting to remove some of the cowl --- - -- need to get back to focusing on one part of the car at the time.....so I will soon me back to focusing on the rockers and rear...

Also, notice the locator dowel for the lower fender bolt. I'll be remaking that part and wanted to make sure be able to locate it properly!

Lining up the rocker panel - the inner rockers that we made were plug welded to the new Dynacorn rockers, then drilled again (between welds) so that I could plug weld the pinch weld to the 2X5 tubing. BTW..I bought some Roper Whitney punches for punching holes to plug weld - -way nicer than drilling them.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--bRQ20phHZg/VI5qluPpYaI/AAAAAAAAJu0/kyUVzQwpstE/w960-h720-no/10455835_10152192048066984_8957113451549525463_n.j pg

Clamping and fitting with some sheet metal screws, C-clamps, ratchet strap, whatever it takes! Dad found and old frame spec book for these cars so we've been checking everything as we go. This car was dead on so far, which is surprising since it was so rusty and beat up.

I also test fit the trunk pan. All of this stuff will be fitted a bunch of times with screws and clecos before any welding is done.

Also - to note: the doors were filled to the old quarters prior to final removing them at the factory spot welds and won't be removed until the new quarters are fitted.

It's not much of a secret that I'm a big fan of DSE's stuff, so I was happy to finally be able to put my money where my mouth is and buy some parts from them.

Basically everything with the exception of headers and a fuel tank - I'll get that later.

This pretty well catches up to where I am today. Next steps are to fit up the quarters and tail panel.

I'll probably post pictures in slugs like this - -I get busy with work (my real job) and trying to keep this project going....and I have a family, and other hobbies. If you want to see any specific pictures, ask - I probably have them. I just tried to grab the highlights so far.

Thanks! I've been posting pics on Facebook and a few people have been bugging me to start a thread. I'm pretty pleased with the progress considering I hauled it to my house on March 27th of this year and for the most part, I'm a one man show working on it after the kids go to bed. Dad has been a huge help - he's been doing body work for - - -well, let's just say a long time! He's my consultant!

I don't know Brandon --- I can't put my finger on it --- but something is MISSING.... I'm sure you'll find it. LOL

Some of the rocker welds aren't within tolerance... one or two of them is more that 10/1000th's longer than the others. Just sayin'

I love 66/67 Novas so glad to see you building this one!

Wow, man I am really jealous of the shop! Looks like you know what you're doing can't wait to see more progress. Keep up the hard work and don't be skipping on pictures that's the best part.

If you're doing the quadralink you might as well remove those transport tie downs from the frame rails. That job will be much easier on the bench.

I love these cars too! I find myself asking why I'm fixing a car that was this bad, but I really do enjoy the process and why not save another old car from the junk pile! I also have a problem with proving to myself I can do things!

I thought you would get a kick out of this. You have to love good ole 1960's era manufacturing consistency. When I was removing the quarter panels around the latch area I found 0 (yes zero) spot welds at or above the latch on the passenger's side. On the driver's side, I found 12.

My 5 year old was out there with me when I was drilling them out and she asked, "why didn't they do both sides the same?"..... All I could say was - good question honey!

Wow, that is a labor of love. Those Nova's (66/67) are true classics but their handling was so bad that when I was 10 and riding around with my grandmother I asked her what was wrong with the car? She asked me What do you mean? I said, the front's twitchy and the car leans when you turn the corners. She laughed and said that it was normal. But now you're going to have a classic with all the modern trimmings. And the scope of what you're doing is impressive. But that frame table looks like the right tool for the job.

Best wishes on reaching your goal.

We test fit the quarters for the first time tonight. They are from AMD. They are nice and thick metal. First impressions are that they fit pretty well.

Stupid Facebook creates it's own link again for the first pictures and won't work right on here because it doesn't end in in the actual file extension.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-V7if3rCv5uA/VI5qqfZwaXI/AAAAAAAAJws/ArlEHaF9U5g/w960-h720-no/10537032_10152282123931984_6898711962544223715_n.j pg

The doors are still on and adjusted to fit the rockers and stock quarters (prior to cutting them off). We put the decklid on and it fit pretty well, but the driver's side gap was too wide. It was being held out by the tail panel. So out comes the spot weld drill to take apart that side of the tail panel. At the end of the night everything was sheet metal screwed together and fitting fairly well (for a test fitting!)

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-idG4xQLne4Y/VI5rATuVh4I/AAAAAAAAJ58/VyfzEfqNF_o/w960-h720-no/9288_10152282126256984_285180758574570551_n.jpg

Seeing the quarters on gives me a bit of a false sense of progress, but it's a step in the right direction.

Off to bed - it's late and I have to get up early for work!

Awesome job Brandon. Glad to see you are saving it. How is the firewall, cowl, rust wise?

I love the frame table. I wish I had one of those. I got a big laugh out of your daughter recognizing one side had 12 spot welds and the other side didn't. Makes you wonder what the guy at the factory was thinking/doing when he installed it. I wonder if was an early Monday morning or late Friday car?

I guess I would say they fit better than I expected - so far. That being said, my expectation is still to have to "gap" everything. I don't know how OEM replacement sheet metal fit on these cars and I'm not willing to pay the price to find out! - - -my guess is that the trimming was a little more accurate and there were fewer die marks etc. The quarters don't have anything drastic enough that a little hammer and dolly work and some high build primer won't allow us to block out.

I got the tail panel welded back together and fit up. Then I blew it all back apart so that could prepare the inner structure for final assembly of the back of the car.

I rolled it outside, blasted the rear inner structure. While I was at it I blasted some other parts that I know are staying - dash and inner roof structure. After getting it all cleaned up, I sprayed it with Southern Polyurethane Epoxy primer.

It will be a nice feeling knowing all the metal is new or sealed up, I can't say the same about mine. Progress is looking great!

What blaster did you use?

My Dad has a pressure pot blaster that he's had for longer than I've been alive.

It's a Lindsay brand and looks about like this only much more worn looking!

Nice progress Brandon, did you buy the frame table from Billy?? If so do mind sharing how much? I will have a need for one very soon. :lostmarbles:

Thanks - I did get the frame table from Billy. I honestly don't remember exactly how much. He was making another 1 or 2 of them at the same time and cut me pretty good deal. You'd have to shoot him a message to see if he's going to be building any more and what the price would be. I know he's really busy, so not sure when he'd pull away from customer projects in the shop to build more. I think I may have gotten lucky and caught him at just the right time.

Once I get my car far enough along, maybe I'll rent you mine! ;)

I just realized I didn't respond to your questions. The firewall and cowl is a rusty mess -- it will all get replaced.

I think what happened on that quarter was that the inner structure for the latch was placed incorrectly and they flexed it into place and then spot-welded the hell out of the quarter to hold it where it belonged.

I will try to update with the latest progress this week as I have time. The Rear DSE Quadralink and mini-tubs are pretty much tack welded and/or screwed into place along with the quarters and tail panel. I've had a few "learning" along the way that I'll try to pass along to anyone else that may be dumb enough to save a car that is this far gone.

I'll just skip ahead. The majority of the DSE Quadra-link is welded in place. The inner and outer wheelhouses, quarters, tail panel etc. is all screwed into place and fit up. A few more things to check and then I'll blow is back apart for the last time, button up some welds and then put everything back permanently.

Looks great, Brandon. Did you do anything to treat the metal that's hidden, like the inside of the frame rails, since you had access to some of it?

wiedemab
12-15-2014, 11:11 AM
The Dynacorn parts either come coated with their weld-thru or the standard new part black (probably crappy - primer). Where I was going to weld or had ground, I either used weld-thru primer or in some cases used epoxy primer.

Could I have coated it more uniformly and thoroughly, probably yes........ Much of the framerails gets welded on to install the DSE stuff and what I had sprayed on the inside of the rails was burning back off in those areas. I may coat the inside of them with

http://www.amazon.com/Transtar-4423-Amber-Rustproofing-oz/dp/B00H2W3YZW

We've used it with some success in the past. I would do this once it is on the rotisserie so that I can spray it from multiple angles etc..

Wow, Loads of progress! Your work is looking great, almost looks like a car again. Did you get the lower link mounts welded in yet? The directions are kind of odd there. I had to call and double check a few measurements with dse.

wiedemab
12-15-2014, 03:57 PM
I haven't welded those on yet. I read the directions and thought I had it figured out, but just to double check I took some measurements off of their display when I was at Charlotte Goodguys. I wanted to be able to verify their location by taking diagonal measurement from the upper links.

The things that I've ran into so far that - -aren't a big deal, but were little speed bumps along the way are:

- Dynacorn rails seem to be slightly taller than the factory rails, which left a little bit of a gap between the inner stiffeners (from DSE) and the top of the rails. It just left more of a gap to fill with weld than I would have preferred, but not a big deal.

- I cut out the trunk pan using the DSE templates, but I didn't have any wheelwells to reference. If I had them, I believe I would have positioned the template against the wheelwell and not the edge of the trunk pan. This resulted in me notching too much away on the trunk pan. Again, not a big deal, I'll just remake that part of the trunk pan and it'll look like I never did it.

- Both quarter panels fit really well

- the tail panel was too wide so we drilled it apart and repositioned it

- the outer wheelhouse and trunk drop-off on the passenger's side fit pretty poorly and had to be split and pulled to make fit.

- The rear seat pan drop-off (the piece that the upper DSE mount welds into) was in pretty bad shape on my car from a chunked driveshaft and some rust. I tried to buy a replacement, but nobody had it. I took mine all apart and fixed it. I have everything tacked into place, but in order to weld all of this more easily, I will probably finish the welding on the rotisserie.

I noticed you notched the rails for the torque boxes, I wasn't sure why but I didn't know the rails where taller. That makes since now, My driver side mini tub cut was off some too, I didn't catch it until after I had already boxed the rail back together so that tub was a pain to get in but with some clamps and vise grips I was able to over come the poor fitment.

wiedemab
12-15-2014, 07:05 PM
I notched that rail because it wasn't trimmed properly. The rails aren't much taller, but are a little different. I need to measure to verify. The tolerences on these cars weren't good from GM, as I'm sure you've seen

kevin_l
12-15-2014, 07:50 PM
Yeah I figured out the poor tolerances pretty quick, seeing how nice your work is and the care you're taking to make it just right makes me wish I had a nice table to keep everything true and square, oh and more patience. Can't wait to see some more progress. Did you decide of wheels yet??

I was pretty happy with how we had everything fitted up with sheet metal screws so I took it all back apart to finish welding the frame close-outs and made the front and rear flanges (I guess that's what I'll call them) for the inner wheelhouses.

I decided to tig these in since it'll be easier to grind. I made the pieces on the Shrinker/Stretcher.

Yup, I am glad they are hard to see because some of my plug welds above the tubs are disgraceful...

wiedemab

I got most of them welded pretty good, but there are a few that aren't stellar.

We ended the night with the inner and outer wheelhouses welded in, the rear bumper supports welded on and the quarter fitted (again! -- I think this is the 5th time they've been off and back on).

Dad noticed a bit of a wave in the passenger's side quarter last night, so we may have to do a little pushing and pulling to get it fitted a little better. We are thinking that a Porta-Power between the framerail and the outer wheelhouse, putting a little outward pressure should line it all back up nicely.

I was doing my minitub install on a finished paint car. Here's a tip, If you are tapping down the flanges as you weld with a body hammer.... don't let it glance off and smack the inside of the quarter... I just put everything down, climbed out of the trunk, turned off the lights, didn't go back for two days.

Again - using the laser to locate brackets. Some of the stuff that you may noticed needs to be final welded in the pics is because I'm going to wait and final weld it when it's upside down on the rotisserie (call me lazy!)

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-FwZlKorTXlg/VOF3Hl_7U-I/AAAAAAAAKE8/dsbxNi5wh-Q/w1358-h764-no/15%2B-%2B18

A lot of times, I'm working by myself and I also don't have the factory front leaf spring perches to locate the front link bracket from, I decided to fixture them up at the correct width and weld them to a piece of tubing (easier for me to hold in place. I also used the frame spec dimensions to measure from the rear spring shackle location to where the front mount should be. Just for good measure, Dad and I checked dimension on his stock '67. (yeah, that has been handy from time to time)

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-NLBFw-A8-0Y/VOF3HseyGxI/AAAAAAAAKE8/ajIlGOId8tE/w1358-h764-no/15%2B-%2B19

Once everything was tacked into place, I wanted to bolt the rear housing in to satisfy my worries that everything was located properly. It was almost dead square and if I remember correctly within a 1/4 side to side (minor panhard adjustment) with the links set right out of the box. I was happy enough with that and proceeded to weld everything in solid. I moved around a lot and kept checking measurements to make sure nothing moved.

There is a little wave in the quarter and using a long straight edge the lower rear of the quarter needs to go in slightly. We'll jack out with a little pressure where I have "Hold" and using body clamps to pull in on the lower until it's where it needs to be. Finishing some of the welds all while holding it.

I also picked up the firewall bracket and master cylinder for my hydraulic clutch setup. I talked quite a bit to Walt from Classic Nova about it. I believe he did some of, if not most of the development and fitup on the part and DSE appears to be making it. Nice piece that reinforces the firewall and locates things properly.

Brandon,
I'll be honest. Reading the updates on your build inspires me to get back on mine. Kind of stuck with time and ability. Looks like some patience helps a lot on these builds. Plus, the skills you have, and showing how to use them helps. Please keep taking pictures and posting. Awesome job.

I struggle with the patience piece of it, but it really is key. I think we had the quarters on and off probably close to 10 times to make sure it all went together right before welding anything. I'm still learning new stuff all the time.

The biggest help in the whole process is having my own personal adviser - -my Dad! I learned a ton from him on previous projects and learn things everytime we go to the garage. He's been doing this stuff for, well, a long time. Without his skills, coaching and patience, let's not forget the tools!... this would be a much more difficult journey.

Nothing major to report. I've spent the better part of two weeks off and on working on my beater pickup that I let go to hell. All new brakes (calipers, wheel cylinders, lines, rotors, drums, new fuel pump)... I know boring, right?

I did manage to finish all of the welds on the quarters and grind most of them. I'm hoping to get the cowl and a-pillars removed and ready to start mocking up new sheet metal tonight...we'll see.

I need to remove my sharpie notes! I've completed those tasks....

Starting drilling spot welds again. I just mocked the parts into place. I will blast and primer the inner structure and back side of the dash etc.

Also, if my car wasn't so rusty, I would have located the upper sub-frame support locations with bracing etc.. I could see that mine were rusty and pushed back, so I'll just locate them as they need to be to get the subframe level and square.

The firewall needs plenty of patching too....

Oh - I also picked up a cheap "mock-up" engine. I'll tear it down and just use the block and heads to mock everything up in my Chevy II. Depending on what it looks like on the inside, I may rebuilt it with a few upgrades as a motor for my '72 Suburban at some point. I'm not sure what the issue was/is - it was in the core pile at the local salvage yard. It's a run of the mill 5.3 (LM7).

It's great that you are taking the time to resurrect this car. The body work is looking really good. Taking the time to do it right and put it all together square and proper will really pay off.

Even if everything fit absolutely perfect (which it never does), there is still so much unseen work that goes into something like this.

Good work.

That's funny I often wonder if those people are right.

My favorite is when you tell people how much you have in a build and they tell you they could build the exact same vehicle for 1/4 of what you have in it and the best part is when then tell you they could do it in 1/2 the time it took you.

ps Even though I will never re-coop the money I have spent on my cars I just like doing it.

The satisfaction and personal gratification of doing the work yourself is a huge part of it. Indeed.

I see it as an investment. Both in handling/performance and reliability/safety. Production standards have improved, sure. But you never know what you are paying for until you tear it apart. That's true for a 40 year old car, and one fresh out of the factory doors.

When you build it yourself, you know every bolt is torqued correctly, every seam welded proper, every inch of metal is coated, every measurement is square... That's what makes a car last. That is what makes a car safe.

You can buy a new CTS-V for $70k and still just have a production car, albeit a very nice production car, but production nonetheless.

Or, you could buy a used CTS-V for $20k, and put $15k into it with some elbow grease, and have a dialed in, tuned, faster, safer, more structurally sound vehicle for half the cost... And it's still a Cadillac.

I love the CTS-V, so I used it as an example. But the comparison works as a concept.

People who can't replace the ink stick in a click pen, or change a light bulb without calling the landlord, or operate a fork without going blind... They don't, and won't, understand why we do what we do. That's fine. They can buy the new stuff, somebody has to. We need people to buy and wreck new production vehicles so we can get low mile engines for our swaps.

wiedemab
05-05-2015, 09:03 PM
I hear you! --Amen!

BTW - -I've also been pondering a used CTS-V for a DD....Can't quite pull the trigger while I'm building the Chevy II though. I'm trying to stay focused.

In other news - Dad and I tore apart the 5.3 mock up engine, stripped it down to the bare block. Interestingly enough, the bearings looked immaculate and there is no ridge in the cylinders. I think it's definitely a candidate to be freshened up for the Suburban after serving its purpose at a mock up block.......We shall see. I've never built an engine, so I think I may do it just for the sake of doing it.

I moved some things around and cleaned up the shop. Got started on the front-end.

I got the front frame sections and firewall, located them with the mounts that I made prior to tearing the car apart. I then welded them into place (checked everything with the frame specs first). Welding them into place consisted of installing the DSE connectors and adding another locator x-member on the frame table. Adding that x-member allowed me to remove the bolt in location so that I could bolt up the DSE front-end and check it for squareness, parallelism to the rest of the car. Since the upper locations were also removed, I could adjust everything to be right on prior to assembly it again. There is enough play in everything that you can put it where you need to.

Public service announcement - if someone wasn't very careful in putting a car back together from being torn down this far.......you could easily make a mess. I've probably been overly critical, but the alternative scares me to death. With all of the money I've spent on this thing already, I can't afford to ruin it!

OK - enough rambling - - Pics

This pic shows how I located the frame sections using a spare factory x-member.

Brandon,
Great job on the build so far, its gonna be a great feeling to know what's under that paint when she's done. I had a question on your rear quarter panels... did your body line on the rear quarters match the door and front fender so far as thickness is concerned. When I say thickness I mean height wise. While I was building my dads 66 I ordered a set of Goodmark quarter that at the time was the best fitting out there and I found that the quarter did fit well but I found that the body line was bigger than my factory door body line. Wasn't sure if that's something you ran into or not. Continued success with the build, i'll be watch the updates.
Thanks

Not sure if this is the dimension you are talking about, take a look at this picture. The body lines (in my opinions) are pretty good for aftermarket parts. My quarters came from AMD.

Not quite sure yet on shaving the cowl. If I don't, I'll have to make sure I have good drains for it. I kind of like the stock look of having it there, but it's completely un-needed at this point. Good thought on the vents. I hadn't given that a thought yet. I'll have to think about how to incorporate something.

Main hoop is tacked in and the rear down bars are tacked in. I made the rear bars straight since I have not intentions of running a rear seat. They have about 10deg or so of inward angle to clear the wheel tubs. I'll add some triangulation to everything as well. I'm still finalizing how I want to do that in my head.

I plated above the rear framerails and shock mounts. This is a pretty solid area with the DSE shock crossmember etc.. I made them big enough to tie in some of my other braces once I figure out exactly how I'm going to do them.

I had to share this picture that my Mom dug out.... This is my Dad's '67 SS right after he bought it... (1982'ish) with me standing next to it.

That is one car that will forever be in the family if I have anything to say about it.

I love the pictures of my girls next my projects/cars. Maybe when they get older they'll look back on them as fondly as I do of the pictures with Dad's cars.

I'm not sure what the issue is. I use google photos since most of the pictures I take are on my phone and they autoback up there, but I think the link address changes from time to time.

I may have to start hosting them elsewhere. I know Facebook picture address can change too. I'll add that to my list of stuff to do! :)

Thanks for looking though!

smugmug.com is what I use.

OK Google Photo users - -not sure if this will work long-term or not, but I ended up clicking to share the photos - grabbed a "shareable" link and then grabbed the URL from that picture. I'll see how that works.

Here are a few quick pics. Sorry about the size. Google seems to mess with sizes of shareable pictures simply to screw with me.

I ended up buying a trans tunnel from Billy at B&B Classics. It's and awesome starting point to build from even thought it wasn't originally intended for a Chevy II.

Still a lot of little details to wrap up and neaten up, even on the parts that feel like they are done. I'm just happy to make progress. I'm going to tie the two forward cage bars that connect to the upper subframe mounts together with a bar that will be under the upper cowl panel. That is my next project to tackle....hopefully soon. I'm starting a new job on Monday so we'll have to see how much time I have.

Thanks - I get a little better with every project...I'm slow, but I know how it's supposed to turn out so I just keeping working at it until it gets there. I love to look at other people's projects in bare metal, like Billy Utley's stuff, Rad Rides, DSE. It gives me something to strive for, but as a part-time/hobbyist...not sure I'll ever get there.

I want to take some metal shaping courses. I know I'll end up wanting to buy more tools - ie: power hammer etc., but what the hell does a guy that spends a couple of evenings per week tinkering need all that for. ;)

I think the seats should work. I thought they may be too wide, but surprisingly there isn't much room in my hip area. The shoulder area where they flare out is going to be interesting - -they Chevy II isn't very wide so I'm a bit worried about how much room I'll have down the center of the cars, but it should be OK. - -and yeah, I love the way they look!

I'm hoping to get the cowl wrapped up this weekend and then move on to mocking up the engine and trans.

Yeah exactly, my original core suport is way off. I'll have to elongate the holes to bolt it on.

Built a crossmember..... It turned out nice, but may end up scrapping to because I have a vision of a better design in my head that will allow for better exhaust clearance. I don't have a very good picture of it though. I also plated the factory from sub-frame rails... I'll try to take some pictures of this as well.

I've not turned my attention to seat location and getting the floors built. I mocked up the ididit column. I'm using an adapter from B&B Classics to a Sparco quick-release and a Sparco wheel. I bought a Lokar cable throttle pedal setup. My plan is to run a Holley EFI setup with a cable throttle.

I also purchased a trans tunnel from B&B (nice piece!). Again- I hope to have some better pictures once things start to come together.

I'm not sure who builds them, but they are from Detroit Speed. I had several people working on alternative options for me, but we weren't able to find anything that fit - -- or fit to my liking. These were expensive, but they fit absolutely perfectly.

Haven't been very good about taking pictures. I have the seat supports all welded in and tied them together under the trans tunnel. I also decided that I didn't want my exhaust to be below the rocker panels - -- sooooo. I ended up with a bunch of 304 stainless oval tubing from Vibrant (via B&B Classics). Billy also make me an X-pipe which is a piece of art. I'll be running Borla Pro-XS mufflers. I plan to fab up the entire exhaust prior to putting the floors in the car. Another side-effect of the exhaust being tucked up so high is that the first cross-member that I made just didn't suit me any more. I changed the support structure and built a new cross-member. Sadly, I had quite a few hours in the first one, but it will be put to good use as "garage art".

The following progress is the result of 4 straight days of working in the garage and sleeping very little. I loved every minute of it!

Started off by working on the exhaust. 3" round to oval, then back to round at the muffler. Borla Pro-XS mufflers. I only ran it back to the muffler and plan to finish out the over the axle pipes and tail pipes later. I thought it would be easier to build it back to the axle before I put the floors in.

I wanted the cage to fit up tight...........so, I ended up having to remove the front roof structure to weld it. Drill all of the spot welds out of the roof structure (after taking a few measurement of course!). Welded the cage bars and then replaced the structure. BTW -- - My interior guy will probably kill me. The headliner is going to be a tight fit.

I haven't done much on it for a while. I got busy at work and my wife got some bad health related news. Without going into all of the details, we've been spending a lot of time traveling around to various doctors etc..

I'm glad someone is paying attention to the build though!

Thanks everyone. My wife is really open about what is going on. She had breast cancer a little over 2 years ago and the end result of treatments was about as positive as we could have have asked for. Unfortunately, the breast cancer returned and has metastasized to her spine. The good news is she feels perfectly fine and there are treatment options. Our hope is that the cancer responds well to the "easy" treatment options with fewer side-effects.

For now - -- we are enjoying life and taking it one day at a time.

The car will get finished, but given the choice to simply hang out on the couch with my wife or go to the garage.......... well......

I did sneak out there last night for a couple of hours, turned up the stereo and finished tig welding my exhaust. Thanks for asking about the project. That was good motivation for me!

Thanks Eric! I've made some small progress on the car, fab'ed another floor panel. Work has been crazy busy. Going to shoot for wrapping up the floors in the next months or so and then it will be close to ready to come off of the frame table and onto the rotisserie. My helper (Dad) is on a motorcycle trip for a while so that hurts progress too!

Nice work! But whats up with that Suburban in the background?

That's our family cruiser - -

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-113zAoPmcQc/V6kfKforIDI/AAAAAAAARmk/fV2gbmMk1iQdycBkt5Lk5YF7zAsK1IPUw/w600-h400/IMG_20160416_152458844.jpg

'72 Suburban, 350/2004R, AGR box, CPP sway bars, Porterbuilt stage 1..... etc.. It's just a fun cruiser. Longer term, the plan is to swap in a 6.0/4L80E and use it to tow my Chevy II to events, but for now it's the only thing I have on the road to cruise. I'm a bit biased, but I must say the patina on it is pretty fantastic!

Oh - -and the girls love it!!!

I also ordered a bunch more parts.

- Racepak IQ3S
- Holley HP EFI
- Holley accessory drive kit
- Vintage Air Gen IV with 3-knob controller - not running AC right now, but want to be prepared in case I do later.
- Factory reproduction radio delete pannel
- DSE Wiper kit
- Sparco 6 pt harnesses
- Braille battery mount
- remote battery mount kit - well, I bought it all from Waytek
- C6 Z06 Brakes (used from a buddy)

I'm trying to figure out what to do on wheels, but have a few options that I'm toying with.

Thanks guys----I'm really getting anxious to get this thing on the road, but life has been busy. I try not to stress out about it and just be thankful that I'm able to even build the car.....no matter how long it takes!

I understand slow. I am not a body man, and trying a quarter is stretching me.

But like you said, life gets in the way with kids and everything. I just keep telling myself, one day, one day, I will get this finished.

Keep going, you do awesome work. You actually make me want to work on mine.

Yeah I can TIG and patch sheet metal pretty well by now too, but I also struggle with really getting it metal finished - and in a way its a waste of time anyway as anything I build (or anyone else really) will get skimmed enough to cover it, but I"m always amazed how the pros can make their patches look like a continuous piece of metal that was never welded. I'd like to watch their finishing technique from start to finish some time.

and just go ahead and install A/C, you're going to want it sooner or later and much easier to put it in now.

Welds S77's will be the ones on my car soon. I believe they'd look awesome on yours too! I'm sure you've come across them by now…

I had planned on running the Weld RT-S 71......... They apparently no longer offer the width and backspacing that I need in a "high pad height" - which is what is needed to clear the C6Z brakes.

I've been thinking about the CCW LM-5 black center..

When this thread first started I thought, wow that needs ALOT of work,
I never imagined the build was going to progress so quickly and with such a high level of craftsmanship. What is you day job and mechanical back round? This is a bad ass build.

I love the suburban. Glad to hear its getting some love later on too. Keep up the great work !!!

Thanks for the kind words. I'm not sure I agree with you on the speed at which the work is getting completed. I started on it over 3 years ago! As far as my day job is concerned - - -nothing even remotely related to this.... I'm the Director of Corporate Strategy for Hillenbrand Inc.. We have a portfolio of companies around the world in various industrial markets as well as Batesville Casket. My background does lend itself a bit to this type of work though. My undergraduate degree is in mechanical engineering (although I was never really a "practicing" engineer). I spent my early career working on improvement projects in a manufacturing environment (Lean/Continuous improvement).....ended up working in Sourcing/Procurement - got to run that for one of our companies for a few years, which was fun (traveled all over the world!). - - -anyway, none of that has to do with cars. The real reason I do any of this is that I picked it up from my Dad. He spent his career running an autobody shop. I remember watching him build cars as a young kid (and fix everyone elses! - he would fix things that should't have been fixed - -I think simple to prove he could fix them........kind of resonates with this project huh!). He still has his '67 Chevy II that he finished when I was 3 years old. I learned how to weld and basic fabrication along with body work from my Dad and over the years, he and I have just tried to continue to learn new skills (buy more tools!) and get a little better with each build. I've also become friends with some very talented and knowledgeable people in the industry over the years that have been gracious enough to put up with me asking them lots of questions. I figured that if I knew what good looked like, I could keep on trying until I got there...I've thrown away a few attempts in the process.

I literally get at most about 8hrs a week (on a rare occasion I'll marathon if the wife and kids are out of town!). It's frustrating at times, but I have to remind myself that it's a hobby and it'll get done when it gets done. Our family has had a lot going on the past several years too, which puts things in perspective.

It's all about having the right tools for the job and plenty of patience (which I lack!)..

Decided to re-skin the doors. By the time I fixed the small rust issues and fixed some damage to the driver's door I could re-skin them quicker/easier. I'm glad I did. After having the doors dipped would have been impossible to get the door shells primered very well. I used a KBS coating on the insides of the doors - it works really well.

First we lightly folded the skin edges over and test fitted it to the car. This allowed up to adjust the skin on the shell. You would be surprised at how they will twist and move around - - if you aren't careful you can make a mess. Once we had it where we wanted it (these Dynacorn skins fit pretty damn well) - I tacked it in a couple of spots, took it back off, hammer and dollied the rest of the skin and welded it on.

I have to say - it's invaluable having the old man around (he's skinned who knows how many doors in his life) - lots of little tricks to be learned. I consider myself a fairly intelligent person, but there is no substitute for good ole experience! Action photo of Dad! ;)
