Yay, new wheels. Stole them off some sucka's Mustang... actually, they're the brand new American Racing "427" wheel. Was ready to buy some CCW Classics but then I saw these and changed my mind as I really liked the more vintage look.

The only thing I don't love about them is the center of the knockoff adapters say "Shelby" on them. That was unexpected because they're blank in the pics on AR's website. Actually I don't mind but I'm 99.5% sure I'll get sick of everyone at car shows asking "why did you put Shelby wheels on a Chevy?" Either that or I'll get a court order from his lawyers asking for royalties. Eventually I'll spin 'em in a lathe and face the logo off. At that point I might put them on a friend's 2-axis NC Bridgeport and use a small ball end mill to put a bowtie outline on them.

Details:

Front: 17 x 9.5 with 5.5" backspace using my old 1/2 worn down 255/45 Michelin Pilot Sports

Back: 17 x 11 with 6.5" backspace using 285/40 Kumho Ecsta MX

Also, since my last round of pictures I've dropped the front of the car another 5/8" and dropped the back another 1 3/8".

I'm making some custom hubcentric adapter rings tonight out of 6061-T6 barstock (the wheel centerbore is an oddball size and seems nobody has off the shelf hubcentric rings.) Plan is for a .002" press fit into the wheels and a .010" clearance to the hub/axle flange. I'll be hard anodizing them for corrosion resistance.

The wheels work fine as-is being lugcentric (if you take your time mounting them) but paranoia is a driving force behind many of my projects. :P

Better still, hopefully tomorrow night I'll be taking the knockoff adapters to a friend's shop where I can use his 2-axis NC retrofitted Bridgeport to ball mill a bowtie outline on them. Shhhh, don't tell Mr. Shelby! :_paranoid Just need to draw it up tonight and generate some G-code to feed the machine. I'm open to other suggestions in this department but a slight bowtie outline seems like the logical choice.

Troy,
The wheels look sick!

What would you guess is the average weight of the wheels?

Troy,
The wheels look sick!

What would you guess is the average weight of the wheels?

Thanks!

Don't know on the weight, I forgot to weigh them prior to mounting the tires. They were nowhere near as heavy as I expected they were. A front wheel/tire combo weighs in at 51lbs and a rear wheel/tire combo was about 56lbs as measured by me standing on my POS bathroom scale while I was holding an example of each.

And a little update, I can now put my paranoid mind at rest.

Inside of wheels as shipped. Oversize centerbore, not hubcentric...

After some quality time with a lathe and some 6061-T6 barstock (plus Alodine conversion coating afterwards for some corrosion protection) we have 4 of these. Sized to be .0015-.002" press fit into the wheels and .004-.006 total clearance over the front hubs and rear axles. The adapters sit .015" below the wheel's mounting pad.

The finished product. Put a light smear of loctite on the adapter rings prior to tapping them in for good measure.

And that's how you make a lugcentric wheel hubcentric. :)

I also faced off the "SHELBY" logos on the knockoff adapters. I ended up leaving them blank. Looks much better now!

Thanks! I did the "dunk and swish" alodine method. We had just mixed up 5 gallons so I took a cup of what was left over, enough to completely submerge them.

The lips aren't rolled and I haven't trimmed the wheelwell moldings. Almost an inch to the frame and inner wheelwell and just about 3/4" to the lip/molding-- lots of room. I might roll the lips and try 315/35's when I do paint & body. I'd roll them now but I'm quite certain I'll crack the body filler above the wheelwells.
