Huge price difference charged from what quoted

Need some help. I brought my 67 camaro convertible to a guy in October of last year and he quoted me 8500 for a color change from Red to Black. No major body work needed. I put an SS hood on it, front and rear spoiler and we ended up putting a new trunk lid on it. A buddy and I took the engine off the frame and powdercoated the frame and core support and reassembled it and brought it back to him so he really didnt do the frame off. He said there was some rust he had to fix on the firewall and a little repair to the dash. I have paid him 9500 so far on it and now he says he needs 3300 more due to the fact he has more hours into that he thought he would. This 3300 is for some of the powercoating and parts he had to buy and the extra labor hours. I am an idiot and didnt get the first quote in writing. He has been a good guy but I think that 4300 more than the first estimate is a pretty good chunk. First of all he said he should have it done by April 1st and now with it being MAy 23rd he is asking for 4300 over what he quoted. Any suggestions??? Pics of the process!

Is 12800 crazy for a perfect paint job??

12,800 is reasonable if it is perfect...........I have seen much higher for perfect paint jobs. I would make sure that you go over it again and again though and find every flaw for the kind of cash

I had kind of the same problem with my painter, it took too long, and it cost another $1500 more, but I know he did more work then he said he would have too. Body work is a funny thing, it may look straight, and seem ok, but there is an awful lot of blood sweat and tears that go into a job like that. If your car turns out great, then no problem, but if you find flaws, then you have a reason to get really upset, but sometimes body work and the costs are more then what it normally turns out to be. I know most places in my area won't touch a car like these for under 15k to start.

Look at the car very closely for any imperfections and if any are present, insist to have them addressed and fixed. Next, since he is negotiating with you based on the original deal, you can also do that with him in a professional manner. Negotiate for him to accept less than what he is asking, address any imperfections, and THIS TIME GET IT IN WRITING.

BTW, the paint job looks very nice. I would pay that kind of money if I knew I was getting a killer job.

ok well it is almost done but i am sick to my stomach about the quality of the job. There are some imperfections in the paint. You can see the sand marks on top of the quarters. Now what to do. I am so sick of waiting for it to be done. The guy is so slowwwww.

So I have paid 13K for the job, it is not perfect. About 5 different spots were there are little imperfections in the paint. The sand marks really are noticible on top of the quarters. What to do??

I asked him before hand if he was comfortable painting it black and he said he was. Is it just that hard painting a black car without imperfections?

Paint shrinks up and most times if he has enough clear on it the sanding marks can be color-sanded and buffed out. I would make him do it though so if it goes through the clear to remove them it's on him.

Stick to your guns and make him fix the things that you don't like.

A suggestion would be to walk around the car with him and mark all the area's with tape that need attention. Give him a timeframe to fix them, meet and review once completed.

Don't worry about 13K if it is done right.. I have a friend who is doing a 64 GTO Convertible and when it is done it will be in excess of 25K.
