I've seen you-tube videos taken with the dash cams.

Have any of you guys used a dash mounted video cam? Any comments, what's good, what's not.

I'm thinking more for insurance, and just taping crazed drivers lol.

I know several guys that tow larger race trailers that are now running them full time when they are on the road. One too many times they've been the victims of people pulling in front of them and stopping short trying to create claims.

go on youtube and check out some videos. Pay attention to the picture and sound quality. They usually list a brand they use. There was a nice HD camera and I found on ebay for $240. Can't remember the brand.

I wanna get one for entertainment. The crap I see on the roads are priceless.

I manage a large, high production collision shop and just saw my first dash cam video submitted to us by an insurance company. The camera was mounted just above the rear view mirror on a car following a truck through a green light intersection. A person texting ran the red and slammed into the truck totalling it. This woman downloaded her dash cam vid and emailed it to the truck owner. He submitted it to his insurance to settle the dispute about who ran what light.

The thing that shocked me how clear the picture was and how crisp the sound turned out. It was like standing there watching it live. It's the way of the future man I swear.

Garmin Dash Cam.

Auto recording when power is applied, can record over the old file, GPS/speed data embedded in the footage.

+1 on go pro. Just do a standard sd format and use a suction cup attachment. The quality you get on the go pro will be far better than then most lipstick cams that come with dash cam systems.

Also you can use it at events.

You'd have to figure out a way to wire it up to a key switched circuit and set it to start and stop with power, also have to set it to overwrite old files as it fills up the card. Not sure how difficult that might be?

^^GoPro app does this. One drawback is you have to wifi connect your iPhone to the GoPro camera which uses up the GoPro battery rather quickly. I think 45min of 1080 video is about the max. I run a power cord from my ash tray to the GoPro to overcome the battery drain.
