After we got the Chevelle wrapped up and she got all the press she did for a 16 year old paint resto project, the guys from Fairway Chevrolet asked about building another project. But this time step up the game just a little bit. I suggest a 55 chevy project I had been gathering parts for for many years. Greg's main concern was the driveability of the car over long distances. So when this project began discussion last fall Greg's main concern was being able to drive the car from Las Vegas to Bakersfield of Scottsdale and having the same driving experience the Chevelle has but this time with a bit more "BLING". That Chevelle is awesome to drive, Ask me how I know......
So the discussion of the building a 1955 Chevrolet that was very subdued was talked about. Basically try to out due the stance on the Chevelle with a 55 Chevrolet. Well the 55 I had need a quarter panel and I always knew these cars would take what's called a "wedge section" to make them look proper. The Wedge Section will thin out the entire car from front to back. But with this car we cut the body through the back side of the front wheel opening. And then dropped the front frame horns to get the front headlight and grille assembly to come down 2.5" and make the bumper even with the rocker from the side profile. In this picture below you will see what I'm talking about.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Brandon%20s%2055%20Chevy/ShopPicsJanuary2011021.jpg (http://s616.photobucket.com/user/ironworksspeed/media/Brandon%20s%2055%20Chevy/ShopPicsJanuary2011021.jpg.html)
And here is the direction we are going with the car in this rendering. You will notice that the bumper is now down quite a bit in this rendering to effectively lower the front of the car and tuck the front wheels 2.25" further into the car without really disrupting the visual appeal of the 55 Chevrolet.

Alright enough of the blah blah blah. Lets get to the fab work.

In my eyes all we did was turn this car.

I wish it was really that easy. There is actually a ton of work in this car to get it to run and drive and work like it does. I'm just stoked on the results and glad the customer is so happy he let as build something else for him.
Thanks Again. My guys did a kick ass job on this car.

So let me explain the wedge section with pictures. It is alot of work and can be quite a task. We paint stripped the car on the outside and only on the inside where we were going to make the cuts. We knew the floors needed to be replaced and wanted to do that after so we could make the interior sheetmetal fit the car and look factory when the door panels and such are removed. We do not local access to a dipping facility and we knew this car was going to have alot of panels replaced so we elected to clean it up by hand as we went and we will get whats left blasted here shortly to access part we would not have been able to get before.
Here is the stock car all mocked up

The layout and precise cutting is the toughest part of this project and making sure you have a nice game plan to make it go back together.

It will be interesting to see them both side-by-side when they're completed.

Rodger, I have no doubt you and your guys will do an amazing job on this 55. I love the rendering and design goals. Good luck with it. Also, thanks for showing us the details of wedging the car. This is the first time I've seen the process. It really helps give a better appreciation for what is involved instead of simply reading that the car was wedged.

The 56 that made the grt 8 this year was done like that just a bit. But not as much as the direction you are going. The 56 most poeple don't even notice 2" on that car right at body moulding. But you really notice it where the grill and park lights and bumper are.

serious game changer....again.
pretty intense body mods Roger.
How do you keep everything (sheetmetal and aspect shapes) square or do you just get it close and perfect it in metal work since you are essentially starting from scratch?

The lay out is the toughest part and then you have to cut it precise. To make the welding easier. I will post pics of it tacked up next week so you can see how precise Broc's cut lines and cuts are to get the best results. It's all just math in getting the layout perfect.

I just saw one of these this morning: maybe four inches of clearance underneath (decently positioned coilovers), two-tone red and gray, sort of pro-street, but not M/T tires. I made sure to turn off the radio and put the windows down, and it sounded like LS, with a manual box. I was wishing I had a dash cam...
I want to say that Ron Sutton has been teasing with the idea (or is in the process) of building a p/t tri-five. Can I smell competition for awesomeness?

So the next step in the process was welding up the seams in the car. This is where the precise cuts and proper fit up pays off in dividends.

You can see the amount of work that was needed to get this Danchuk quarter panel to fit properly. The original door skins will be replaced as the final step to get the flow down the sides proper once everything is complete. They are just riveted on for looks at this point.

You can see this quarter panel has been welded and metal finished. This is the stock quarter that remained on the car and was cut and welded back together. We also shaved the gas door at this point to minimize warpage.

Thanks Dave, The wedge section is pretty big deal but stuffing the engine package into this car like planned will be a pretty big deal. It's usually harder to try and make something look stock then it is to make it look custom.

Would be nice if Danchuk made a variation of the body they are now building with the changes already in the metal, but then it would not end up looking like your work looks.
This will be a very nice '55. I'm partial more to the '55 than the other Tri-5's so will be neat to watch this one to completion.

Sorry I'm just getting around to doing an update. Things have been pretty busy around here with SEMA and everything else.
This 55 is going to be one bad ass car. Everyday I get more and more excited about this project. The wheels and stance on this car are really cool.
We got the Dash moved back to clear the large engine set back.

Here is the direction we are going with the engine compartment. We are working with Vortech Superchargers on doing a complete custom blower housing to get the old school look even more. We are also working on the valve covers to get the perfect something that should have been done but never was vibe.

The wheels on this project were designed by Eric Black and myself. The front are supposed to look like 18" spindle mount wheels. The rear are build to look like the wheel that would have accompanied the Spindle mount wheels on a Gasser in a 19" wheel. The front half of the wheel hoops were machined from solid chucks and the rear hoop is from a 3 piece style wheel.

Time to get to work fitting the doors and building the new door skins to align with the shape of the body and get the under hood stuff dialed. The plan is to display this car in bare metal with all the billet parts at GNRS in January.

I wanted that wheel concept in the larger diameters for my patina'd 64 Chevy truck but couldn't afford to do one-off's. I wanted 19's & 20's but an 18/19 combo looks just as nice. I love the rolling stock set-up & the underhood plans. I'm assuming you used the GT40 tire size 315/40-19 for the rears?

Yes sir. This car needed side profile in the rear tires. So we down sized the wheel size to keep the overall height the same but add more side wall. Looks awesome on this car.

Here are some detail shots of the engine. You can see the DBW throttle body will be mounted on the firewall for packaging issues. We also made the Vortech Super Charger brackets. You will see them in .125 steel and then in 1/2 plate once the design was completed. The boot on the super charger was source from a big rig truck. Lots of cool details going into this. We still have to get the power steering pump bracket to fit into the opening behind the blower belt and the rack and pinion.

Awesome work!! I have been looking back at the "wedge" cut and was wondering if you cut all the way under the tail lights with sectioning or was it just a pivot point? (If that sounds right?) With the curves under them it looks like a pain to fab and work with but you cannot tell that the car was cut at all. Again, amazing work! I am partial to the 70 Chevelle you did,(wonder why?) and a 55 is on my "want" list as well. Going to be watching this thing come together! Thanks for sharing.

The Fairway 55 is moving along quickly. The details are getting more and more over the top everyday. We body is moving into the body shop next week to begin paint and body work. We have 5 months to get the car done and to Sid Chavers shop for upholstry on Oct 1st.
We took a 3 speed column shifter set up and have converted it to work in this car with detents and have that vintage look. We also are incorporating the tach mount in the steering column shifter mount. I like the look very much. We have to clearance the gauge cluster to allow access still.

We have gotten almost everything needed under the hood. The throttle body is mounted on the driver side of the firewall to the intake plumbing under the dash. The supercharger brackets are getting more machine work before getting coated and prepped for the final show. The air intake box is coming along nicely.

We did a spray out on an old inner fender to get an idea of the amount of PPG Ice Pearl we wanted to get the right look in the light and in the dark. The exterior color has all the pearl and Ice pearl and the engine color is really just a satraight toner color. But for the most part they are nearly the same color, if that makes any sense. We did not want the pearl of sparkles on the engine itself.

Its funny you say that. Just the other day I had a conversation with a customer about how much work we actually forget we did after the car is done. You don't realize 4 guys worked full time on 1 project for a 1 calendar year to do all the many things we forget about once its all done.
I'm just glad to have customers who understand enough to pay the bills and stand in line to build one car after the other. Both of these cars are going under the knife very soon for repeat customers. If I had the man power we would be starting on them now. That blows my mind more then anything.

Rodger would it be possible to detail the welding? the heat setting , pulse or no pulse , foot controller , tungsten size , hey thanks Darrin
I'm gonna guess your meaning sheetmetal.
I find as a starting point you set you welder for every .001 material thickness with steel you run one amp. So .065 steel is set at 65 amps or .125 steel is 125 amps. This is just a base line for the amperage you can adjust with your with your pedal. So guys foot pulse the weld, so they will do 7 pumps and weld about 3/4 to 1 inch and cool it off with water or compressed air. Tungsten size really doesn't matter a bunch on thinner stuff but a small tungsten will carry a lower voltage a bit more stable and a big tungsten will carry a larger amp load for thicker material.
All of the settings and tungsten doesn't mean a thing if you can't cut and fit the sheetmetal tightly. If the gap is bigger it will require you to adjust everything and put alot more heat into the panel which will mean that it is more distorted then it should or could be. You have to do everything to minimize your heat. Put the least amount of heat into the panel means the less your gonna have to fix with a hammer and dolly or shrinking wheel or a rose bud.
When I bring a new guy in only let the guy tack parts together for a few weeks until I know he can control his heat. If he has to do these big ass tacks that have huge heat affected zones he is not going to be welding just yet.
Tig welding is all about fit up for all material thickness's. Fit up, Fit up, Fit up.

Thanks I have wanted to do this to a 55 Chevy for years. Its a huge task and has to be done with in reason. Too much and it looks funny and to little and its a waste of time. We have done this to 4 or 5 cars over the years. If done right it give it a killer stance but most people will have no idea what was really done to the car. The front bumper on this car is physically 3 inch lower then stock in relation to the rocker.

This is why you guys are some of the best in the business. As I said way back at the beginning of this thread, I'd have no idea what was done to the car if you hadn't shown it to us. I think in so many instances, the best built cars are the ones you almost don't realize are heavily modified when looking at them.

I think the angle on the trim is determined by the draft angles of the casting. Not too much that can be done to avoid that sort of thing unless you modify and replate it.

THEY NEVER EVER FIT - as in EVER.... from the factory.... or from the aftermarket. Cut to cure. End of story. Big dollar cars make that in brass.... slim it down a bit - and make it fit like it's supposed to. '56 and '57 are even worse because they use a bigger piece there.

I have had a few inquiries as to how we went about painting the engine and the aluminum parts like the radiator.
With the radiator and aluminum parts we typically send out the part to be powder coated with some kind of primer. This way they blast the tanks or aluminum parts and then coat the aluminum parts with a primer that is baked on. We have found this to work the best. The obviously don't blast the fins of those come back still clean. But you can do the surround and the tanks on things like radiators, and AC condensors. We also do it on anything smooth that is aluminum as we feel the "BITE" of the primer is better with the blasting and heat for the part with primer. We then stack any needed body work on top. Here are some parts we had blasted and primed that I have pictures of.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Fairway%20Chevrolet%2055/5-13-2015%20009.jpg (http://s616.photobucket.com/user/ironworksspeed/media/Fairway%20Chevrolet%2055/5-13-2015%20009.jpg.html)
Here it is with body work on a 2nd coat of epoxy primer. We are letting the body fill dry before sanding.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Fairway%20Chevrolet%2055/55chevy-induction-01l.jpg (http://s616.photobucket.com/user/ironworksspeed/media/Fairway%20Chevrolet%2055/55chevy-induction-01l.jpg.html)
You can see the top billet aluminum piece in primer. We really shouldn't have any body work on a billet part.
http://i616.photobucket.com/albums/tt248/ironworksspeed/Fairway%20Chevrolet%2055/6-3-2015%20006.jpg (http://s616.photobucket.com/user/ironworksspeed/media/Fairway%20Chevrolet%2055/6-3-2015%20006.jpg.html)
Now the unpainted fins of the Condensor or Radiator in this project will get sprayed with Krylon to keep the cooling capacity to the highest level with the thickest paint. I had a guy at a radiator shop once tell me they cool better in black spray paint, not sure I believe him. But there is nothing worse then seeing aluminum fins through the grille opening of a car.
Now the engine and manifold parts go through the long deburring process. They are then shot in epoxy primer. The primer is given a good couple days to fully dry and since we are not body working the engine we shoot a minimum coat of sealer and the regular base coat clear. And really just enough to cover the engine.

If you mean over the polish aluminum, I'm sure there is. But we wont have much polished or exposed aluminum on this car.

Hoping to spray sealer on the car next week with some color.
As funny as the Wedding chapel may seem for doing body work, it has worked out amazingly well. The dust in the shop is minimal and the temp inside the tent during the hot days is 10-15 degrees cooler since the sun is not beating on the roof. And we can rent it out on the weekends for parties and festivals for some extra cash. It might be the best 600 bucks I have ever spent on Amazon. That was shipped........... HAHAHA

We mixed all into on and took a what we needed to spray out of the total sum after getting the measurement we defined to get the consistency we wanted.
My painter is confident we will be fine. I hope he is right. He usually is.

There is a local guy around here that just finished his Orange Tri-Five and it has received a ton on Internet & Magazine publicity. One of the reason could be the fact that orange photographs so well or it could also be because he beats the living crap out of the car.

The wheels where shot peened in the middle and the edges where blasted with 120 grit glass for a smoother finish on the hoops. The wheels were then coated with a special mix Ceracoat. It was a lot of testing to get the finish we wanted. Just like the color on the car.

Its coming. A little less then 2 weeks left to go.
We have the car back from Sid Chavers and he knocked it out of the park as to be expected. Dakota Digital has done a killer job on the gauge cluster with separate tach to resemble the old Sun Tach.

Goes without saying, absolutely amazing build. The craftsmanship is truly top notch.
Question, this could be elementary, but I was wondering if you could explain the relationship between the DBW throttle body and the dual quad throttle bodies on the Holley intake. Are the dual quad bodies just there to hold the "air cleaner" or do they actually serve a mechanical or sensor function for engine operation?
Just curious, as it is the first time I have seen a setup like that.

Throttle bodies serve no actual purpose. We removed the throttle blades from them. They give the air cleaner a place to sit. DBW throttle body is on the firewall giving us a huge long intake runner.

SEMA 2015 was a good week for us.
Saturday - We got the car done for the event.
Sunday We made it safely to Las Vegas
Sunday at 11pm The customer saw the car for the first time in person in months and loved it.
Monday - We got parked in the Vortech Supercharger booth
Tuesday - The madness begins - Show opens
Wednesday night - We get word we got a GM design award
Thursday 730am - GM design award for Best Hot Rod
Friday - The Block.com does a nice article on the Fairway 55
https://theblock.com/news/2015-sema-show-feature-car-ironworks-speed-kustom-s-fairway-55
- We survive the SEMA Cruise and head home
The car turned out awesome. We knew there would be alot of people who just don't get the car at all. But alot more got it then I ever thought would.
Enough blah blah.

Agreed the only one that kinda shows the what the color was however no where near as bright as the car actually was. . It's very hard to shoot
pictures with Metal Halide lights and maybe one day I may go back and edit/color correct the pictures. What sucks is no can see the metal flake
in the car. Hopefully when Seig posts his pictures we will be able to see it.
Being Honest this car had one of my top ten favorite engine bays and hopefully one day I will take a few pictures in natural light vs indoor light.

It's one off and says the name of our shop and is not an original part.
It was an idea I had to tastefully put our name on the car and look original.
It was pretty speedy.

This has to be one of my favorite builds on this site. I love the valve covers and would be curious how those were made. I would think you could sell them in a normal Sbc style. I hate the look of my coils packs

The issue is they make adapters to mount SBC covers on the LS for far less money. They would not clear our engine bracket system and we wanted something different alittle different. These covers were pretty complex in the fact we made adapters to get rid of the center bolts of an ls cover to really hide the fact it was an LS engine. Lots of small tricks every where to make a modern combo seem very old school.
Thanks for the compliment.
