I felt guilty about posting my stuff under Ron's AMX build because I was too lazy to start my own thread :-) So here is a quick run down on the build. After selling my 67 LS7 Corvette, I decided to build a car that I can go out and race with at Pro Tour events and not worry about so much. After piloting the 67 Vette at high speeds and thinking, what if I put this thing off the track :underchair: That's where the Nova comes in....I have always loved this body style and it was the first muscle car I got to ride in as a kid. My Uncle had bought a brand new 70 SS396 Nova and I just loved it!

I found this car and it looked pretty good, but of course like all cars of this era, it had the usual rot in the rear 1/4's - outer wheel house. So I knew that all had to come off. The plan is to build the car around the track proven Detroit Speed front subframe and suspension and their Quadra-Link rear suspension. It is being powered with a 7.0 Liter Katech engine with a T56 Magnum trans. The rearend consist of a 9" housing, Mark Williams Pro Mod aluminum center section with a WaveTrac diff and 3.90 gear. The outer housing ends are from Mark Stielow and use C6 ZR1 hub pack bearings.

The car has a ton of fabrication work to accommodate all of the mods. I modified the DSE wheel tubs to give me a 14" wheel house that can fit a 345 tire on a 12" rim. Lowered the height between the body and frame, added a full chrome moly cage, welded up the firewall, added DSE frame connectors and added a SCCA approved ATL fuel cell with protection cage. I am currently cutting the entire trans and driveshaft tunnel to fit the T56 along with the adjusted engine and pinion angle changes. Lowering the car to Billy Utley low required the entire drivetrain to be readjusted.

The body received some upgrades with all new sheet metal in the rear, door skins along with fiberglass hood, deck lid, front fenders, cowl panel and front and rear bumpers to lighten it up a bit :D

This thing should be an absolute blast and provide excellent safety at higher speed events. Oh, and since this thing has beat me up everyday and has stolen all of my lunch money....Thug seemed like a good name for it Ha ha.

Here is the work on the trans tunnel, as you can see in the pics, after the drivetrain angle was corrected after lowering the car...a little surgery was needed  Also got the driveshaft safety loop fab'd and welded up. We will also be making a new trans X-member that will be based of the floor X-member for a cleaner install and additional exhaust clearance.

After getting the car at the desired ride height, it was clearly obvious that the 275/18 rubber just was not going to fit under a hard turn and suspension compression. Soooo, out came the air recip saw and sliced up the new fiberglass fenders!! They ultimately needed about 1 ¼” to provide all the needed clearance. Once they were pooched out, they were re-glassed and good to go. We also added some aluminum stiffeners to give the light weight glass some strength. Thanks to Mark Stielow for the hood vents, these are the same ones used on his last two creations and they fit nicely into the cowl hood and will get rid of some of the air packing under the hood and create some down force on the front of the car. We also got the front down bars fabbed and welded in where they are hidden under the fender and also provided the pick up point for the billet hood hinges. The glass bumpers have also been trimmed and tucked for a cleaner look. The car is currently at my Uncles body shop where I helped to get it prepped for blocking and final fitment. It’s looking pretty good and I am looking forward to seeing it in color soon. I also received the 300M gun drilled axles from Strange Engineering, super strong and nice and light!! Hopefully I can get this finished up for Motorstate!!

I just don't know what takes Ron so long to get his project done, look how fast this came together, I just started the thread today

What brand of 345's did you go with?

You put a little more weight back in it, and it will be Billy Utley low (almost):D

Love the paintwork. And that trailer..seems like I had a hotel room about one year ago that looked exactly like that inside, and the heat didn't work :lmao:
I see a certain someone's Vette too :whistling:

Aaron,

Yup....gonna be pretty low when the power train goes back in. Tom turned off the heat in the hotel cuz he was talking about keeping you warm by spooning all night  That Vette is a figment of your imagination, it's really not there....."these are not the droids your looking for" :snapout:

The gas valve may have been turned off outside.....but the gas leaks inside about killed us at night!!! :confused18: Man, the four of us in that thing after slamming beer...whew, we were lucky Homeland security did not raid us thinking we were a mobile IED, or that we were not found dead in the morning from affixation!!

Thought I would re-post some of the pics that were lost in the big server shift. I have been slowly making progress on the Nova. Installed Rear 1/4 glass and regulators, weatherstripping, tail lamps, fuel fill door, removed front fenders and hood, bell housing dial indicated, clutch installed, trans assembled to engine and finally, I installed the engine/trans combo yesterday!!! Just have a few odds and ends and it will be secured in place and I can start laying everything else out. Hope to make some more progress today .

Quick update...............

- Front brakes installed
- Engine/trans mounted
- Wiper transmission and DSE wiper motor installed
- All weatherstripping installed
- Headliner getting installed today
- Windshield and moldings installed tomorrow
- Started install of noise/heat matting

Should have the car back from my buddies interior shop (doing headliner) on Saturday morning, then jumping on the brake and fuel lines. Next up...wiring!! Motorstate is closing in fast :ohsnap: Still waiting on a few parts but have plenty to work on until they show up...time is the problem, I just have too many plates spinning this year. Man, my timing to build this car really sucks, someday I will learn......but I suspect it wont be anytime soon :twak:

Brake lines are completed, had to order a bunch of stuff for the fuel system plumbing so I moved back to installing the sound/heat matting. Hope to get the doors assembled with regulators and glass over the next week or so along with laying out all of the wiring :headscratch: Still a long way to go and time is getting short........

Not to mention I may have just sold my house and will have to deal with moving.....UGH, I did not think in this market we would sell it in one day!! The interim house we bought does have a detached garage, but it is not finished and no lift...:hairpullout: Back to jack stands!!! The wife wants to all but gut the new place...like I don't have enough going on :waveflag: At this rate, Motorstate may just be a dream. The saga continues.......

Well,

It looks like all bets are off for Motorstate for me. House sold and I have to finish work at our other house so we can move into it. Gonna suck, I have to pack up and move the Nova and the 65 Corvette coupe project....and all associated parts plus multiple garages worth of tools and parts...ugh. I do hope to keep chewing away at the to do list on the Nova and get it to an event later this summer/fall. Will post some progress pics soon.

Let's just say when he was willing to take on the projects at his shop, I was like....:y0!: HECK YA!! His efforts have really saved me some time and basically just left the wiring and exhaust before firing this thing up. Maybe LS Fest will be possible????

You are correct sir, I'll have to bust on him for that :poke: , ha ha. There are some pics on the web that show it reversed, he may have looked it up and found one of those....he's a ford guy and primarily builds drag race stuff, he did not like the idea of that regulator to start with :shakehead: . Went up to my new shop building this weekend to drop off a bunch of stuff from my current garage (doing the moving thing) and saw that my 72 Corvette coupe was sitting a little low in the front...I mean like on the ground low. I saw the front right tire was flat and thought, dang it has a leak. Leak!!, that's an understatement, it had a hole about 2" across blown slam out of it!! This car has been sitting around for 20+ plus years on the same tires and they are dry rotted pretty good I guess. As I went around to the left side it got even better, the entire tire delaminated and had blown all apart.

That might be a clue to get around to actually do something with the car!!

Please excuse a few stupid questions from an Aussie petrol head. Can you tell me more about that motor? Is it a crate racing engine based on some ome? And what is the type of racing you're aiming this beautiful project at? Any chance of some pics of that competition scene? Yes I know that's four questions :) I'm loving the colour, stance & workmanship of this beast. And lastly yes isn't it awful how life constantly gets in the way of the projects we'd all rather be building & putting our time & $$$ into. Where do I complain about this?

The engine is a Katech Stroker LS3. It is 7.0 liter all forged with CNC ported heads. It's rated at 600hp and 580trq with the mild cam in it. I'm going to run it to start and cam/intake it to about 700hp next year. The car will be used for Pro Touring events.

The car has only recently been moved to the new building....not even done yet. I'll post some pics of the outside of the building later. It's 45 X 80 with 14' ceiling and a 16 X 80 storage room upstairs to store all of the parts :ups:

So, let's pick another event for a deadline, since you blew the Motorstate one :buttkick:

First that comes to mind, LS Fest? That's only two weeks though, I know you're busy so...how about USCA Pittsburgh? October 4-5. Totally reasonable! See you there :military:

In your first post you said you modified the DSE tubs to get a 14" opening how did you do that? Split them and add some or stretch out the tub? I'm wanting to do the same so I can run the 335 tire just not sure on the easiest and best approach.

Aaron,
I believe it has actually achieved "Billy low", everything has been tucked/cut or removed to get it down on the ground and still maintain a real street capability. At this point I am not shooting for any events this year. I may bring it down to GG Charlotte if I have time to have it at DSE's open house. Diana and I will also be at SEMA/Optima to goof off and hopefully see all folks we could not come out and play with.

The mods on the actual DSE tubs was pretty minor, mostly on the front edge to push it further in. The big gains were made by removing the outer tub and fabbing those to the rear quarters.

Killer ride Jeff. I hope you don't mind if i try to put some of your ideas to good use. Did you move your rear frame rail up and in? Is that what I'm seeing just inside the tubs where the rear seat would be. I widened my tubs about half an inch and then cut further in to the frame rail Can you speak a little more on how your wheel house modifications have given you extra room? is it at the edges that you were concerned about width? I've got 14.5" of space across 70% of my wheel well. Thanks Shannon

Shannon,

We did trim the frame back a bit more than the directions show to flatten that area of the tub (also plated the back side of frame to give strength), also formed front inside leading edge to allow a little more room in those corners. On the right side, the DSE panhard bracket protrudes into wheelhouse area (see pic earlier in the thread)...that was flushed and replated (this area was REALLY tight to wheel/tire and would have interfered). Basically once you make your initial fit of the tubs, you will see the areas that reduce the space, in most areas you can trim and fit to make them better. The REAL gain is the outer tub, if you are going to lower the car to the height I have mine, the tire will not fit and fully articulate with the factory tub...the radius is too low and flat where it meets the quarter panel.

Thanks for the input Jeff. From what I could tell from the pics, it looks like your replacement outer tubs that you fabricated run horizontally directly to the quarter panel without turning down towards the lip of the wheel house. Is that correct? Did you leave any of the original outer tub in place?

Correct, they do not turn down. A minor gap (1/8") was left between the 1/4 panel and the outer tub. I did not want the possibility of a "wave" or line to ever show up where the tub met the 1/4 sheet metal, we urethaned the gap to bond the two pieces, but to also allow for movement/expansion as the two parts heat/cool to weather etc. I did leave a 1" band of the original outer tub and the area where the bracing welds to it ( you can see a good picture of it on first page of thread that shows the driver side with rear 1/4 removed.

Nah, you wont make a fool of yourself.

You'll have a blast. It's a fast paced event and you do have to pay attention to the schedule to ensure you get all of your runs in. Just know that the competition is tough, lots of good drivers and cars attend this event. Have fun and take the opportunity to ride along with other drivers on the auto-X, great chance to see how others attack the course.

Well, I obviously have not updated this thread in awhile. Between moving and work just beating me down this year, I have not have much time to work on the car. I have made some progress and hope to get it running in the next few months. Major items left are to wire it up, finish out the interior and fabricate some front inner skirts. I did manage to get the car to DSE's open house in October and Kyle was gracious enough to display it in the shop. Have to admit, that was a little intimidating having the car along side of their amazing projects. Here are a couple of pics from the open house. I'll post up some more with additional details over the next couple of weeks.

The hinge mounts are basically a U shaped pedestal off the front down bars. I believe you can see them on an earlier photo of the car when the front clip was removed. I will see if I can dig up a better pic and post it for ya.

Glad you got the car running, Jeff. That's the fun part of the build anyway. Good luck finishing up all the little details.

Thank you, funny how back space makes such a huge difference.

Yes sir, they are indeed Formula 43 Rad 14's finished in Laguna Gray. Very nice wheel and I love the look of them on the car.

Perfect man, spot on.
I think I read on here that Formula is not doing a 19 any longer but I have not called Formula personally.

I just got direct confirmation from Formula43 that they are indeed NOT offering 19" wheels at this time.

I'm in the same boat...

They do have 19" rim halves in stock...but I would assume once those are gone they're gone.
