I'm in! Signed up Thursday.
I've never been more anxious to go to an event as this. Daytona. Hard to even think about how awesome this will be.
:woot:
Who's going to win?
:y0!:
Everyone the enters a car or goes to just to spectate is my guess!

I'm in - looking forward to it! Laguna Seca was a blast with more than enough track time for anyone who could pass sound (something that I could not do) and I know that there is nothing like Daytona and the chance to run Daytona under the lights... wow!

If my post wasn't clear enough - Laguna Seca had challenging sound restrictions (at 92 db) for some of us. Daytona (to my knowledge) does not have any such restrictions and based upon past experience there we're not going to have any issues. This will be a great time for everybody who can attend and will be an absolute blast.
These USCA Events are second to none - more track, autocross, and speed stop runs than you want and some true marquee tracks. I'm stepping out on a limb and shipping the OLC to Daytona. We're going to run Daytona and Road America (two bucket list tracks in their own right) and will continue to St. Louis and Detroit for sure. If everything hangs together we might try Sebring and finish up at PIR as well but there are some possibilities in September than may change our decisions for the rest of the year.
The best thing about these events is that your experience level doesn't matter - there are plenty of folks around to help out with advice and Jet Hot is even providing instructors on the road course. They are a great time to get to know a lot of fun folks and given the amount of track time available you're sure to improve your skills over the weekend.

James and Sieg, couldn't agree more! TMS was my first USCA event and also the first time I have had my Camaro on a road course. It was AWESOME. The camaraderie is by FAR the best part of the event. I can't go to Daytona (pains me to have to type that!!!!) but we are signed up for Gateway and trying to convince the wife to attend Road America or another event later in the year.
If you are considering attending a USCA event, don't think twice. Just sign up and go do it. The track time is greater than anything short of having your own track in your backyard. The Jet Hot instructors are a must if you are a Novice or even in the Advanced class. And last but not least, seek out Albert Melchior and hang at his barbecue with the crew. The dude can flat out cook and you will have the time of your life sharing stories, talking cars and just LYAO!!!! Man I wanna go to Daytona! Send pics...and lots of them!

Hey guys! New to the forum but found this thread googling. You receive half off if you refer someone to a USCA event. I want to attend the Daytona event but was looking for someone to refer. I know someone that's attending but hasn't been put down as a referee. PM me if you're interested!

Sitting in our hotel room at 6am, still buzzing from the experience yesterday. I'm pretty excited to get back for the autocross and speed stop challenge today, but it will be very hard to top the high banks:trophy-1302:
I am happy to go away with everything intact, running good after three full sessions on the track, including one at "dusk" with the track lights on. What an amazing thing to get to do. I will never forget that feeling. I was not pushing as hard as I could've (I wanted to have something to drive today:D ), but still managed to hit a high speed of 126mph. Danny Popp, Mike Johnson and Kyle were into the 160's for sure. Crazy.
Good news, nobody got hurt. James did get into the barrier though with the Onelap Camaro, felt horrible for him. Looked pretty superficial and I think they have it patched up for the rest of the event now. I think I heard last night that somebody did lose a motor too, but not sure who it was.
Time to get back, we have an 8:00am driver's meeting!

In the second to last segment of the road course Sat night, as it was cooling down and the speeds and action were picking up, the One Lap Camaro lost control on the infield portion and ended up smacking the wall pretty good. This ended the Expert segment while they brought his car in. I snapped this picture as they unloaded it in his garage.

It looked pretty bad to me and I figured he was done for.
But they worked on it over night and I snapped this picture of him running the speed stop on Sunday.

Really happy for them for getting the car on the track again.
I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure this is the car that had the engine failure on the autocross portion today.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-MNqRAqlskP0/U4JPBz2znnI/AAAAAAAAOEI/gUXTMKWTvvE/w793-h520-no/DSC04812a.jpg
We saw it shooting fire out from under it near the finish but I didn't have my camera out at the time. Hate that they had that happen to them.
I know this though, all of these competitors were leaving it all out on the track. I've never heard so many LS engines getting wrung out so much like that before. It was like music to my ears. And they got SO MANY runs in!!! In the first autocross session I bet most of the guys got at least (25) 46-50 second runs in. and they had a whole 'nuther 2 hour session to run in the afternoon as well. Same with the Speed Stop. No lack of track time there at all.

Junior Johnson was smoking everyone on the autocross with a 45.507 I believe and Danny Popp, Finch, and Britt in the 48 hour Camaro were duking it out for second in the low 46 second range.

Gotta tell you guys --- I don't know what the plans are -- or what the USCA game plan is -- but these events are put on for "US", and "US" don't seem to be supporting what is one hell of a fantastic series.
I went to two of them just to check 'em out and help a couple buddies have some fun... and this is an amazing chance for most of you guys - and you're not taking advantage of what's been handed to you.
No way they can put these shows on for 50 or 60 cars... PEOPLE BETTER START STEPPING UP AND SUPPORTING IT. If I had cars that qualified I'd be all over it. Great tracks - great people running it - just first class all the way.

I'm with you Greg. Sadly, I couldn't make the DFW event due to prior plans. I really tried to get away to drive the 16 or so hours to this one, but instead I've been working all weekend. :(
I hope I'm going to be able to make one of them this year!

And by the way who won? The last I heard the lingenfelter camaro had the fastest time on the road course.
Pretty sure Mike Johnson is his C6 Z06 won the overall. Danny Popp was fastest in the road course.
We left 4 hours before the awards portion trying to get a jump in our 22+ hour drive...still in Kentucky ugh, been driving for 14 hours now.:confused59:
I'm with what Greg said. No way these will continue without support. That's why I made sure I went this year. Might not get these chances again ever. I'll be at MIS as well since its close to home. Is it expensive? Heck yes. Was it worth it? HELL YES!
I was nervous as a wh@πe in church after the driver's meeting... but thanks to Jet Hot for getting instructors for us to ride along. I took advantage of them and was immediately calmed by him and his confidence in me. Heck even Kyle Tucker had an instructor... after a few laps he politely asked to get out of his car, lol. Kyle was driving the 70 hard!
I got as many runs in speed stop and autox as I wanted. 26 passes in the autox actually. Could've went many more but it was blistering hot out. I couldn't take anymore.
The event as a whole was very well run and for the most part stuck to the schedule. It was a memorable weekend for us, something I never imagined I'd get to do in my own car. After I get some videos and pictures uploaded, I'll post up a link.

Mike Johnson won the overall in the under 3,000 lb class, fastest overall in the auto-x and speed stop.
Kyle Tucker won the overall in the over 3,000 lb class
Todd Earsley won the AWD class.

I'm not sure what it would take to get more participants to these events. It may be expensive to sign up initially but it is absolutely worth the money for the amount of track time you get. Hopefully spreading the good word about how much track time is actually available will help.
I was blown away with how many runs one could make on the speed stop and Autocross course. Both the car and the driver will be wore plumb out before the time expires...and then after lunch you get a whole 'nuther session at both. To enter one of these events you better have your stuff ready to run and run a LOT.
One thing I think that would help attendance and not be too intrusive would be to allow ridealongs on the autocross and speed stop portions. There isn't that much for the family and friends of the entrants to do once they've watched everyone make 20 or 30 runs at each.

I went yesterday and it was great. I will admit I was surprised how few spectators were present and even the accommodations for spectators could use some work......but that will come. As for how to get people out to the event......maybe partner with the local car dealers and get them to advertise? Maybe they would even offer to cover ride-alongs for potential buyers in their cars? Once it gets bigger, you back away from that. In addition, there was little to no advertising in the area or thru the local car clubs. If you got a couple of clubs to support the cause with a cruise and a car show, you would start to generate buzz. I think the potential to be big is there.....just have to get people out to see it. I rode with Kyle at Kissimmee and I was hooked.

What I just can't understand is there is plenty of advance notice -- and on here and "that other place" -- there are all these guys that profess to want to build or own big time "pro touring" cars... they have the big horsepower - the big brakes - every expensive part known to man....
FOR WHAT? To go sit at a car show in a chair all day? REALLY?
Here's an opportunity for people to drive on some of the greatest tracks in the USA... WHO CARES IF YOU CAN'T DRIVE --- WHO CARES IF IT'S YOUR FIRST TIME... WHO CARES THAT YOU HAVE ZERO CHANCE TO WIN ANYTHING... OMG!!
Hanging out with experienced people that are there to help -- talking to the supporting vendors that are there to support you -- just F'n BEING THERE.... And don't tell me it's the COST! You bungholes spend 5K on wheels - and 6K on brakes... for what? 'Cause they're pretty? GO USE 'EM!!
IF YOU'RE DEAD FRIGGIN LAST SO WHAT. Everybody -- and I mean EVERYBODY started somewhere. Ya think Kyle popped out and jumped in a car and drove? He started out - Maier started out - Tim started out SOMEWHERE. They have FREE instructors for gawds sake! If ya did nothing for the whole weekend but rode around with them you'd have had the time of your life!
Seriously - you guys are blowing it big time.
Off my stand.... but I'm seriously disappointed in the community for not "getting it".

05-26-2014, 01:27 PM
What Greg said...
The USCA has three classes - novice, advanced, and expert. Everyone here falls in to one of those classes. At Daytona there were four cars in novice - by the time folks were on their 7th (!!!!) 20 minute session there was one novice car out on Daytona... by himself... under the lights - how cool is that?
Jet Hot Coatings supplied five very experienced instructors - that anyone could use - for free - on the road course and autocross. Heck, Kyle Tucker took advantage of an instructor (who begged to be let out of the car after the first lap for what it's worth).
This is about learning, having fun, and getting together with everyone for the weekend.
No excuses not to try...
GregWeld
05-26-2014, 01:30 PM
So nobody make 200 tw tires to fit your mustang?
Donny ---
It's more than tires for me -- sadly -- There are requirements that neither of my cars can meet -- you know -- silly things like a registration (have none - can't get one if I tried) -- Insurance -- Lights -- Wipers -- "streetable". This is
the Ultimate STREET CAR Assoc... not the Indy Lights. LOL
My two are just pure track/race cars -- In order to buy the Lotus 2 Eleven, you have to sign papers acknowledging that it can not be driven on the street or licensed - it doesn't meet federal requirements. The Mustang doesn't even have VIN numbers -- hasn't been licensable since Jack built it - I have no title - no bill of sale - no VIN - No windows - no headlights - no turn signals - no plate - and couldn't drive it on the tour part if I wanted to. It'd run out of 110 octane... overheat (small radiator and no shroud)... and the clutch would be toasted and I'd probably break the Jerico with some ham handed shift at low RPMS.
I'd have been IN every one of these events If I had a car to run. I'd actually thought about just going to every one of them just because my friends are there... but with building the new shop out - and trying to get the new house started - and blah blah blah this just isn't the summer to be gone on the road. As it was I spent the month of March going to the first two. I hauled cars to them for RideTech and Hobaugh - and all the gear from Laguna to Fort Worth... I helped Vinnie set up the Optima Prime truck at TMS... I drove 5500 miles in the rig "just cause I could".
I think that's why I'm so disappointed in the turnouts --- people just have no idea what they're missing out on. And they're going to "Wait until next year" to do something.... and who is it they talked to that told them there was a guarantee there'd be a next year?
The time is NOW, and then there'd be a "next year" 'cause it would be, and it should be, a smashing success.

I'd even thought about skipping the Shelby Mini Nats to attend Portland... it is in my backyard. So guilty as charged. However, I've dedicated this season to get my two cars ready for the years ahead... and have gone to considerable effort in that regard.. and there isn't many times that work for all involved so the decision was made to track my two cars where I can run them.
I don't think many on here or "the other place" have the same excuse... and they're the ones this series is meant for - not me. That doesn't keep me from wanting to see this as a success!

I'm trying to build a car to participate, but it'll take me a while....... I hope these events get the support they need to be around for when I finish my car.

Has anyone ever talked with Jimi et al to see just how many cars they'd like to see at each event to make the nut?
Given that they are held in conjunction with the Chump Car series and have the TV deal, that has to lighten the most likely very considerable load some. The Chump car turnout was HUGE this weekend, from my perspective anyway, and interest in that series seems to be growing all the time.
I'm just wondering how many Ultimate Street cars entered into an event would be optimum, before it gets to be too many? Granted it should be more than 50-60 for sure, hell we draw over 100 cars to just about every local SCCA autocross we have for 4 maybe 5 minutes of total driving time. Hopefully the Midwest will represent well at St Louis in a couple of months...

I'm with GW on this, if people don't show up to these events they will go away. The sponsors are paying substantial money to support these events and if the participation is low they aren't getting good value for their investment and they won't continue to invest. Track rental alone for these events is VERY expensive, I have no idea what Daytona, Laguna .... etc cost, but I know a track like VIR is $20K per day, plus insurance, and the cost of the track personnel.
People need to get over the embarrassment of looking like a newb or a fool (I pretty much do that at every event) and come out and have fun. The more experienced drivers are always willing to help if you ask.

This event was awesome!
I only came as a spectator (ran into time issues and car didn't meet the rules) and it was great seeing some awesome cars. I got to meet some great people and had an awesome time. I'm looking forward to going to more events.
I just feel really bad for my bank account. I have slowly been building my Buick up into something that could be called a pro touring car, but after this weekend it got a pretty serious shove in the right direction. Now I'm going to try as hard as possible to participate in the Sebring event in September.

I hear ya... I can't get the sound of those singing LS engines out of my head... :whistling:
I think word might get out a bit more after this event and hopefully attendance will pick up. The first two were pretty early in the season and basically back to back. This one was on the other end of the Country with a completely different draw. I know people traveled from far away to get there though and I'm assuming once they get back home and get caught up, they'll be talking the event up just like everyone else.
That has to help create a buzz about them.

We are back from what I would consider one of the most memorable car experiences we've ever had. The USCA crew put together an awesome event that consisted of more track time than we could even handle. Anybody on the fence about going to one of these events I would highly suggest you sign up. You wont regret it.
Here are a couple laps from one of the sessions on the Rolex course.

Awesome video. Do you know what your speeds were on the banking?
The quickest I was able to get the car to go in the banking was around 152 mph according to my RPM/tire size/gear ratio. Having never driven on anything with banking before I found it to be a blast. The force you feel of the car being pushed into the track is incredible.

Yes Brandon, I definitely could tell I was driving a brick through the air. The car would benefit from some aero work and power if it was to go much faster.

I don't know where to even start. Jimi, Wally and there crew are 100% all in. They miss very little. Everything runs like a well oiled machine. I have run 2 of these events and you will be wore out. So are they expensive no actually pretty cheap if you consider track time per dollar spent.
I hear a lot about track experience.
How will you ever get better if you don't go to the track. No one will make fun or judge you if your slow. Everyone will help you get faster if you ask them. There are free instructors there. Did I mention they are FREE. What would that cost you to buy?
After the first session they start the cars in the order of speed. So if your slow you not going to hold people up. If you improve a lot you can ask to be moved up a class. HOURS of track time will make you better.
Then the question is my car good enough.
There is one way to find this out. Put it on the track. You DO NOT have to have the best of everything to run your car.
The real truth is if you learn to drive the car and then learn to drive the car to its limits you will become a good driver. As you find the limits you can start improving the car. You will learn more from a slower car then a overpowered rocket ship with a monster set of brakes.

Daytona looked kick azz! The pics and video are great. Thanks to all for sharing. For a brief moment I was back on the track at TMS for the USCA event in March. Pretty fun to live vicariously through those of you that attended Daytona. Bill's video of the road course was awesome to see the cars out on the high banks. Rumor has it some GT3 cars do not go as fast as some of the competitors at the event last weekend. Like someone else wrote, the sound of LS engines winding it out on the track will always be a sweet memory.
And GW, somehow I feel being called a "bung hole" is a compliment coming from you. HA! People really are missing out if they are not participating in these events. The driver education alone is worth every penny of the USCA registration and membership fee. Get a few buddies and sign up using the the referral discount and go drive your damn cars. Can't wait for Gateway in July.

I'll confirm the newbie part Greg, he tagged his first person on Facebook this weekend, me, and I wasn't even in the picture :catfight: lol
We had such a great time, the adrenaline rush was amazing and continuous. If Billy is driving a brick, then I must be driving a cement block as I was only running just under 130..the car had a bit more, but the guy in control of it didn't. Maybe a few more track days would help with that.
I'm still loading pictures and videos and I'll put a link here when I'm done.

Jay --- If I thought people would take it personally I wouldn't have said it that way... It would have been much worse! LOL - But you and Donny are still bungholes.
Like you -- I missed being there! And once you've actually done one of these events you do re-live the events you did attend. I'm pretty sure that you're one of the guys that IF YOU COULD....you'd do every event in the series. I know I would love to be able to check off every one of the tracks offered. Not to mention hanging with my buddies from all over the country.
I expected these events to be sold out with a waiting list. For the life of me I don't understand it.
HERE'S THE DEAL FOR ME.... it's not about supporting the USCA... it's about the AMAZING FUN PEOPLE WILL HAVE. The chance to go out and drive these tracks in a format that is welcoming and fun - and your friends are there etc... that's why I URGE people to go out and do these. By supporting the USCA only guarantees that we'll be able to continue to do these events.
Trust me - if you've ever been to OUSCI... you're hooked on just being there. These are your friends out there - the cars driven are the ones you've been reading about here - and now you get to go see 'em and meet the guys that built 'em etc. Hang out side by side - gain some knowledge - borrow tools... tell lies...

Are the results from the event posted any where? I was just curious what the final best times were for all of the participants.
