Finally had a warm enough day to paint the center section. Assemble the axle, and got it slid under the car. I've got to say, final assembly and worrying about scratching paint feels weird.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180131/336da282d66e0b2d0f5068fb46aba3cc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180131/cc99ecac45b50706c3ab5b86399686c9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180131/c96779c2b210fabc48d6724336bb3286.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180131/a20957f50876a07d76a19aadbaa03882.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180131/1eea748a508dd73c158ac81702a47291.jpg

Nova is looking good. Love that body style.
Where'd you find those black line clamps? I was just looking for something like that the other night. I was thinking i'd have to just buy the natural ones and have them anodized.
John
I'm not sure if you need metal clamps or not, but made4uproducts has some nice clamp options (and several colors).
Made in the US, lifetime warranty. I think they are made from nylon.

They are plastic but seem to do the job well. Actually clamp the line tight unlike the aluminum ones I bought.

I had some wall thickness variation in the nickle copper lines. Using the Eastwood flare too would cause "blowouts" I'll try to upload a pic...
The Eastwood dies don't index perfectly either. So between the wall thickness issues, the tool alignment issues and the soft material this is what the results have been. I get a perfect flare 4 out of 5 times. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180131/cf24ad470c4e7219049fd9e32ef5779d.jpg
The eastwood tool isn't really setup for single flare, since then I've figured out a way to do it. On the new stainless lines I've been only doing a single 37*.
Like I said I could get 80-90% success with the double 37* flare, just when it counted, of course I would have issues.

Damn, good to know, thank you. I just received my Eastwood deburring tool. A must when flaring tube. I was going to do SS as you did for the fuel lines but after reading many threads on here changed my mind and decided to go NiCopp. I will be using the Rigid#377, 37* flaring tool.

You should be good on single flare. I think my issue was combination of tubing wall inconsistency and flare tool alignment.

While the motor was out we went ahead and did a btr cam kit, had a set of 243s cleaned up and did the che rocker trunion upgrade. Installed a monster clutch and installed the motor and trans, hopefully for the last time.
Went to install the exhaust but I wasn't happy with the header fit up or the crossmember clearance. So I reworked the exhaust ahead of the x pipe also installed some flex joints. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180414/18a008eabc73d5c25be53deb8a2aa6ca.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180414/1e4c3ee213d56c1658020e1e39a983f9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180414/38cb80f6be0082dc9d79b7d88cf7a529.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180414/58f1f4dcaa88781e9b75d8508b0467ab.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180414/a3fca5d03a6c503f3c6392750efd0c1c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180414/cb715385d35c5f24bed095a0fd7ef90f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180414/69f8d375b6d0acff6a7c36c1c0e2ff22.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180414/4ddee990e5d3fa4d2d9ceb2d784fca5b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180414/4c4b447819cd98832d22adada7e0fa5b.jpg

Finished some rust repair around the back window. I am not at all happy with the blend but for a rattle can it will do for now. I got rid of the powder blue interior and painted it the same 10% gloss 2k paint as the underside. Next the inner fenders and core support will be getting the same paint treatment. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180704/c82c285569e5c6ac23225606f52a03ff.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180704/3521b64857b61adff9463977e4f474b3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180704/de67d941e14e8e41345b5b35361ff84c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180704/03effb18ad54d71ba0c1302428c5dab6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180704/ae9f2b56c488796732a321a1797d62ec.jpg

Man, looks great! I love that you're leaving the patina in tact. I'm always looking for updates on your build so keep them coming. My first car when I was 15 was a 66 Chevy II. My dad and I built it up and it was my daily driver until I was 17 when I traded it and a little cash for the 68 Camaro I have to this day (Project "Cha Ching" on here). Currently, my 12 year old is on the hunt for his 69 Camaro dream car but I'm selfishly steering him towards a 66-67 Nova! :secret: Anyway, great job and keep up the good work!

Thank You Sir, I appreciate your kind words, I'll be posting some update more frequently. There is a big cruise in at the local gm dealer coming up in September and I am forcing myself to have it road worthy. Not sure I'll make it, and it won't be 100% but I am trying like hell!
No matter what car your boy chooses you'll be making memories for lifetime, keep him in the garage and he'll grow to appreciate the time spent with Dad.

Thank you WaynieZ, you guys are the reason I take the time to post updates!

DavidThanks so much, glad you're enjoying the build.
After some sandblasting in 95* heat I laid down some more epoxy and semi gloss single stage. Not much left to paint besides battery mount and core support. I am also planning on spraying some raptor on the under side of the fenders and possibly in the trunk. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180707/d8cabb77538e8d749656b009fdc23399.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180707/b924c23d99463144ebe050ea6aa7d440.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180707/725fcd59fd7ea2c35a837888461f93ab.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180707/c5144832d6ec21a556437659c077cd8e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180707/d26611108c6ebc0727f5fca13e641440.jpg

Yep, it's honestly one of my top 10. I have fallen in love with Survivor builds and the fact that they are driven and not just looked at.
Don't get me wrong I still love the crazy high end builds but some of the Survivor builds are getting the same attention to detail that they are getting.

Man it's been a long week! My brother and I took a full week of vacation and put in 5 12-14 hr days working on the old car. I was hoping to have made more progress however we have never done anything like this before. He is a mechanic by trade and knows cars in and out but blending 4 or 5 electrical systems took some homework and planning.
Last week I sprayed the trunk pan and underside of the fenders in upol raptor and had the local glass guys install the rear window.
For the heat and a/c we used Eaton ez clip hoses and fittings and a II Much fab airport bulkhead to get through the firewall.
At the start of the week there wasnt a single wire in the car. Now the dash wiring is pretty much done other than a few loose ends. The Dakota digital gauges and interface is complete. The dual fans and controller just needs a power wire ran to be complete, the vintage air is all set and the dse wiper is setup as well.
Since the clutch plate forces you to relocate the electrical bulkhead from under the hood to under the fender I upgraded to a sealed weather pack.
I'll post the random pictures I shot from the week.

Thank you, yeah I had higher hopes for progress but overall I am very happy with the work we completed. Like I said, this was our first time on wiring a complete car. Lucky we have access to forums like this one to help along the way!

Thank you, We really tried hard to make wise decisions when it came to placement and routing. There are a few items that"won't be fun" to service down the road but when you're goal is hiding wiring and components some times that can't be avoided.

Been a while since I posted. The car is mostly complete and has been for a few months. But a few miles on the car but I've been having some gear whine issues. So I pulled the center section and didn't see anything too obvious. I had two local shops check it out and they too didn't find any smoking guns but did some fine adjustments on the backlash and preload. After I reinstalled it I still have the whine on deceleration. So as of right now I am just waiting to have the interior finished next month, then once it warms up I'll figure something out with the gear whine.
On with the pictures so far...

Looks great, Kevin! My first car was a 66' Chevy II and I traded it and $1500 for the 68 Camaro I have now. One day I'll have another one but until then, I'm living vicariously thru your build. When you can, I'd love to see more pics of your carpet and interior. :popcorn2:

Haha, Thanks I am flattered although there are MANY nicer chevy IIs than mine, I'm glad you like it!

Thank you, I was blown away how "finished" carpet makes it look. They're doing my headliner too, and once I decide on the rear seat they will also take care of that. After seeing their work I'm debating on having the front seats redone but that would be down the road.

Picked the car up last night. Still need to have them do the rear seat but here's some crummy cell phone pictures in the meantime. They did a very good job on the carpet and headliner. Wish I'd have known about these guys when I had my recaros done! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181218/a735e2273d5a7ab8ad126973d6a017a4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181218/31bbab49d21d2a988502170015491b6c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181218/292a56d17c82bf0e2a3917a877419c18.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181218/3c681e4346c6e066f704416737a58cf2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181218/ed029367459a0bbde1db1a2100c5827c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181218/a2457c8c6652719227a1f270339a63c2.jpg

Wow time flys, it has been a minute since I've updated the thread. I had the interior guys do a custom rear seat foam and cover, did a few cruise inns with Dad and the family. Drove a little over 600 miles and started seeing metalic in the oil. Me being me thought the absolute worst and pulled the motor and trans thinking a bearing was going. Of course, I didnt find anything wrong, and must be the arp lube (anti seize) mixing in the oil. So now that the car is apart again. I am trying to decide what do. Leaning towards upgrading the trans, and installing new johnson lifters in the ls1 hoping to quiet the valve train some. Anyways... on with the pictures. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190629/91afdf31c88df064a72feb263300a914.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190629/8221fe17f5f46a1995c6004829b13f45.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190629/13fb0b6d43b09885e90d77d2af0bf5e2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190629/b5596a99b127245a13c47808b1001921.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190629/39ab642ec87f21cc8042efc8fc7c869a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190629/e2fa1b5150702d29a194e8016ad0388d.jpg

Love the rear seat and it's pretty nice to see that you took it out with your family.
As much as they say anti-seize if your friends I swear I feel and look like the tin man after I use that stuff. On a side note I am running stock GM lifters on my LS1 and never noticed any noise.

I have a soft place in my heart for 66 Nova's I built one in early 90's 350 vette TPI heads 700r4 and 12 bolt 3.73 painted porsche red looked great but rode like a Turd really disappointing belore DSE made clips obviously wonder how much better they are - oh well she's gone now - I like the patina look too and saves $- good job!

Hey Kevin, just wanted to bring this thread ttt and see how the Nova was doing? Hope you’ve been staying safe and enjoying the car. Your project was a huge inspiration for me and really got me fired up to find a Second Gen Nova project...unlike you, I picked one with a little too much patina! Lol

Thank you! Wow, I am flattered that I could bring you some inspiration, the car and the family are doing well. Earlier in the year we moved and now I am lucky enough to have a work shop to spread out. We have just been enjoying the old car, got the ac working this summer and put some good miles down. Kevin can I ask about the clutch stop by your fuse panel? Is it a stop or is it a combo with a clutch switch? Any info on the brand or details would be great.

Thanks for the kind words. It's a simple adjustable clutch stop I made with some box tubing and a poly stopper from mc master carr. The switch is a clutch safety switch, it came from a 02 camaro. I wasn't sure the amps or could handle so it switches a relay to allow the starter to crank.

Wow. This turned out awesome. Love the interior. Do the Recaros recline flat? They look real comfortable. Did you ever get the rear gear to quiet down any? US GEAR has a SEALTH series gear that’s suppose to solve the dreaded whine

Thank you, they recline almost flat and are pretty comfortable, however after way too many covid beers the bolster are a little tight on me lol.
The gear whine is still there, its not unbearable however I want it corrected. The plan is to put the center section back out and send it to gearfx, I spoke with them about a rebuild and dyno break in, seems like the best option at this point.
