Posting this here hoping to get more views, hope it is OK. I am building a 68 Charger R/T for a friend and having a hard time getting basecoat in the original color. Color was one year only Medium Gold Metallic code JJ-1. So far both sources I use for Pro-Spray came up empty and the local jobber only has it in Omni. I would like to avoid that if possible. Anyone have any ideas here? PPG code was 22807 back in the day.

Barring a match, can anyone recommend a metallic gold on a current car that looks good?

Thanks,
Don

I can't imagine why your PPG jobber would only have it in OMNI. Typically I believe they match in DBC and do a math conversion to OMNI formulas. Seems like they could do a spray out for you in the OMNI and use the color computer to back into the DBC. Alternatively, if you have a good non-exposed part (like an inner dash piece) you could take to the jobber he should be able to match it. True original color is a relative thing that far back anyway. There were more color variances back then than today and the shop guys on here know there are still a lot of color variances/alternates coming from the factory.

We'd love the opportunity to work with you on your project. We have a nice selection of golds in the store over here: http://www.thecoatingstore.com/metallic-colors/

I'll check my books tomorrow when I get into work. I have DuPont chip books back to 1947. I'll let you know if I have any luck finding the color

I am not sure if you only want to use PPG or not, but I have painted a few older cars and haven't had any issues with BASF R-M Diamont. All of the cars have been GM's though. The colors have always been as close to original you could ask. The only color They had some issues coming up with was a very dark red on a cutlass. Hopefully you can get your color right.

Try another PPG store. If you can make it in Omni you can make it in DBC UNLESS they don't have the right toners. Omni is PPG'S off brand and I have noticed it doesn't cover as well. Try TCPglobal.com they carry PPG.

The ppg jobber should be able to call the PPG color library, they should be able to help, If not Dupont has a camera if you have a panel that has color on it still in good shape. They can take a picture of it and it will find a matching or close to matching formula. Then you could always tint it if needed to make it lighter or darker.
