I am starting the search for a 6-speed manual so I can make the change from automatic to manual in my 69' GTO. At this point, I am not wanting to buy a "Brand New" kit, because I bet, I could get a good used trans, and then cobble the rest of the parts up separately. I am running a Pontiac engine (No LS here). Have any of you guys made this conversion? If you have, which year 6-speed did you use, and what do I need to shy away from?

Please let me know.

Thanks in advance. :thankyou:

go to ls1tech.com and find a lt based t56. It may or may not work now that I think about it. they are less priced than a ls based, but you may need a bop adaptor. there are a lot more smarter people than me on here so im sure they will chime in.

We just put a Magnum trans in a (70 I believe) Cutlass (with olds engine).

Used a McLeod BOP modular bellhousing (I think Quicktime makes one too).

I believe a regular 98-02 LS1 T56 would bolt up the same but then you have the added cost of modifying it for a mechanical speedo drive if you aren't using an electronic speedometer.

On the olds we had to have a custom pilot bushing made because the auto crankshafts are different than the manuals. Not sure if Pontiac is similar in this regard.

You will need to modify/rebuild your trans tunnel as well.

Thanks, I'm not worried about the speedo, because I am running a Speed-Hut GPS speedo. I am running a stroked kit in my engine, so I bet the crank will go either way. I can get a bearing, I'm not worried about that.

Just putting in a 2nd note about trans tunnel modifications. GM A Bodies have a small tunnel area. T56 is huge and doesn't taper down behind the bellhousing. The lower your car is, more surgery required. I'd love to do a t56 swap, I can't cut up my OE floors on my Chevelle. Yet!
Nice looking GTO and poncho powered. I'm huge A body fan!
