Well I finally have done it, I've decided to let a shop build me a classic. This is much different then anything I've ever done. But I like the idea of think it up and "Pay the Man" Approach. Enough talking on with the build!
Vince With "'Mean Street performance" will be building this beast!

Haaaa, and I was hopin the Firebird would shake things up again. Good to see you today!!
Some boring metal work....rust repair and treating.
Lower cowl tulip was badly rusted. I trimmed out as much as the rust that I could then reconstructed the missing parts with cold rolled 16 ga.
Before the outer cowl section gets welded in I coated the exposed metal in the lower area with POR15 and weld through primer at the weld areas.

now that the center is where it needs to be its on to the sides. Starting with the tubs and quarter panel fitting.
The outer wheel houses and trunk filler were pushed out from stock. 1 3/4" at its widest spot. Then I will modify the quarter panel to fit. Here you can see how much more room it opened up.
I decided not to flare the rocker. I think it will be enough to fit the 315 easily.

Finally have the inner wheel houses modified and fit. Both quarters are inplace and almost ready for final welding.
The wheels and tires came in and we test fit the rears after we assembled the 2001 Camaro rear discs.
Customer decided on running a smaller wheel package to start with. Keeping a budget to finish the build is hard to contain but necessary. Budget would not allow the 18x12's but the room is there if needed later down the road.
18x10 American racing TTII's with 285's are adjusted to hug the quarter. 1/2" outer and 3" inner clearence.

thanks guys,
its been a long week and its only Wednesday. Have an issue with the passenger side door. It never fit right from the factory. Perfect gap to the rear jam, perfect gap at the rocker and perfect line up on top, nice and level but yet the front gap to the fender is at an angle. It has to be the skin, but I can finagle with some cutting, grinding, welding then more grinding.
Saturday nights and Sundays are my recharge days....unless im working on an Orange Camaro.

Spent most of the day getting the roof to sit nice. The joy's of aftermarket sheet metal.
The only tough spot is going to be the drivers corner. But should be ok since we will be shaving the drip rail and mould in the a-piller panels to the roof.
Vince@Meanstreets
06-05-2014, 11:10 PM
Since I had the roof on I thought i'd at least drop the hood on to, just to make it complete.
Don't get too excited...once the car gets checked for square I pop in about a hundred cleckos, a few under panels get tacked on, the whole thing comes apart and then welded in reverse.
waynieZ
06-06-2014, 08:25 PM
Very Nice!
Vince@Meanstreets
06-09-2014, 11:08 PM
Before I tore the car apart I took notes of funky factory fitment and measurments to ensure the car goes together close to what it started with. But in this case, much better. We know the glass, hood, trunk and doors fit so we are pretty close. This was almost 4 years ago.
So with all of the metal on the car and squared we can start solidifying the foundation.
1st step....trunk drop offs and then rear outer wheel houses. Once these are welded we will reassemble the car again to double check fitment.
You can see how much we are extending outer wheel houses to bulge the quarter panel out.

Now to start tuckin the exhaust.
We are using the stock crossmember but we pushed the engine back so now the long tubes are pretty close to it. We used a few sectioned bends to get around it.
The header extension section will be band clamped into a stainless x-pipe system by Magnaflow.
Once we adjust the forward pipes we can center the X pipe, the set the mufflers.

What Airaid u-build did you use? I don't really like the Spectre CAI so will probably go with this instead.
Also I noticed you used the Dirty Dingo alt/ps bracket, but did you use the stock ps pulley? How is the fittment? I'm just curious because I have the very same bracket but have not gotten to that point yet.

Hi Spec,
Cool, good to see locals on the forums.
We used the Airaid multi bend tube and made everything else from off the shelf parts.
The DD bracket is OK...the PS pump could have been clocked a little different to work better. Stock pulley from the GTO LS2.

I'd leave the bumper as is. In cars with lower valance below rear bumper, such as F-body, the exhaust tips look great flush with the valance. With the tips part of the bumper, it just look odd.
Just my opinion though.

Vince, the best looking exhaust tips on a PT car are the ones you cannot see, IMO.
On my 67 velle I would not want these tips blocking the view of my 295 tires which look pretty mean.

01-30-2015, 10:23 AM
Yeah mixed feelings that's why we put it out for ideas. One other thing to note is the bumper will be sanded and painted body color. so I believe it will flow better.

I like to tip to go past 1/8" and flush cut with the edge whether it be the bumper or quarter panel.
We wanted to try something different and mix it up a bit. I may try it anyways as we have a spare bumper to cut up.
Looking at the picture I think it maybe too large. Might split it down the middle and take a bit out of it then contour with the curve. We will see.

On too the next issue, I really wanted to keep the GTO seat headrest in the rear. So we had to create some clearance.

It created a nice lean to the back seat, and helped them clear the bottom of the rear window.

Thanks for the info Vince...again great work.I've heard as well as read that the 8.2 wasn't worth building when compared to it's 8.5 big brother but with all the updated internals I'd guess it's a tough enough unit when done right...I have two 8.2 units in my garage which is why I was asking...thx

Hi Dave,
Yeah they are ok stock, better if upgraded.
I would not use them for drag racing. From what I have killed in the past the weak points are the pinions and axles. Fix those two deals and you are golden.
When ever someone tells me they suck I just say "yeah, but they are lighter".
