View Full Version : From sbc to LS, need help/advice

I've recently just bought (spur of the moment purchase) a 98 vette LS1 with 21k miles on it complete with front accessories for a future swap in my 69 Camaro. It currently has a GMPP fast burn 385 with 5 spd TKO 600 and a moser 12 bolt posi with 3:73's

I've been reading so much on these boards I'm abit overwhelmed

I have LS overload....is there someone on here that I could refer to via text or phone? someone that knows exactly what needs to be bought that works in a 69 Camaro? I mean the only thing I know for sure is that a tanksinc tank set up works fine (around $550 total shipped)....and I'm going to use a cable throttle body to keep it simple....and a 411 computer for easy tunablilty, besides those things, I'm lost

my motor has two fuel lines coming from the fuel rails, and perimeter valve covers, so its a bit of a bastard year I guess....just my luck

Well first of all, there is much to ponder.

-Driveline (tranny type, x-member, engine mounts and exhaust) all kinda go togetherr...

-Cooling, hoses, radiator

-Electrical tie in to your existing system, pretty easy, but pretty detailed....

-Accessories, you have it but will it all clear.

-Fuel system, remember, its not just the tank, its a system, lines, pump, return, regulator, venting.....

There is plenty of good info out there, just keep reading. While its not a small project, its not too large either.....

You can look on project updates forums to check out other people's swaps.

Few things to consider:

-Fuel system: looks like to have the tank sorted out. You need to sort out your fuel lines from tank to the fuel rail. If you're planning to track your car at all, Vaporworx tank probably the best bet. Tanks Inc tank will work for most application.
-Motor mouts/adapter plate: some combo work with some headers. Others will locate the headers too low. Holley's new set up (mount/crossmember/headers) looks to be a sweet set up in regards to ground clearance.
-Wiring harness: you can get harness from PSI or Speartech. They need to know what trans you're using so that they can program the ECU accordingly.
-If you're running AC: you'll need to get a bracket to mount the AC compressor. Holley/Dirty Dingo plus others sell the bracket.

I'm not using a/c, that much I'm sure of....and I just use the car for car shows and cruising around. Seems like a lot of effort and a pain to do this swap for just messing around, but you all know how it is

can I use newer style (99+) fuel rails? can I just swap them out with my 98's? or is the setup I have now better?

Ive read 1 gen fbody can use a new aftermarket Holley oil pan...also a 4th gen fbody oil pan will fit but need to be modifed (street & performance can do this... http://www.hotrodlane.cc/ ). Not sure if vette batwing pan will fit.

having the vette accessories is a plus...most people run into issues with the fbody or gto accessories hitting steering components.

fuel system. before you buy tanks inc, read up on the vetteworks swap (http://vetteworksonline.net/ go to the engine conversion section). It's a 4th gen fuel pump, built in return line and pressure regulator, drops into your OEM tank. tank height is the biggest issue. There are other fuel buckets (shorter) than can be swapped in. I think the 4th gen bucket is a much better way to go than the tanks inc. I did the vetteworks swap...love it..no issues and well under $500.

you could do a head swap and possibly put a new " no return" fuel rail system in

dondb is doing a similar swap into his '69 on TC. He's using an LQ9 (iron block 6.0) with LS3 heads, but a lot of the swap parts will be the same as yours: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=251593

I have the tanksinc tank with a walbro 255 and Corvette regulator. If you aren't going to track it full time, this is a common setup and very reasonable cost.

Definitely decide on which frame mounts, motor mounts, adapter plates, transmission x-member and headers you want to use. They all work together. If you try to piece it together (like me perhaps), also buy a 5lb sledge hammer, as you will have to beat on something to make it fit. The new Holley/Hooker setup looks like it's going to be a good fit for most, but there are plenty of other setups out there as well. Once you decide on the headers, that will dictate what other mounts you'll need.

My build is a lot different since I swapped out the cam, heads, intake, TB, fuel rails, injectors, trans, clutch, shifter...........but I consolidated all the info into one LS swap thread on LS1Tech.com. There are a lot of useful part numbers in it, and it's all specific to this swap. If you want to simplify things, then look into the Holley/Hooker setup. It's a system that includes motor mounts, adapter plates, oil pan, headers, and trans x-member. You'll have plenty of clearance, and good driveline angles.

Everyone that I know that's used a TanksInc setup has had good things to say about it.

The TKO600 should work fine, as well as your radiator.
