We used to have a guy run a highly modified Bug
in Norcal Scca... it was mostly Porsche motor...
He drove the wheels off that thing and often would
set Top Time of the Day

Took the Firebird out for a run last weekend to see
if it may be ready for the event... motor seems to be
keeping all the pushrods where they are suppose to be
but the 12 bolt just ate the clutches after 26 years of
abuse

car because they could never drive it the way he does

Although Dad can run it pretty damn good:)

There are no fees to get into or on to the grounds -- so you're $20 is all it's going to take.

That 69 is no joke, very unassuming without all the PT bling. Sure the mufflers look kinda goofy but the old man wheels the snot outta that thing!

The Fairmont is parked next to us and is also built well. Big stroker motor and some decent mustang suspension under it. I think Maier is quickest on the auto-x in the over 3k lbs class with a low 27.xxx run. That lil Fairmont is only two seconds off and the guys having a blast!

Danny Popp is fabbing up some exhaust for tomorrow. 2 strikes against him, 3rd strike puts him on the trailer. I would've thought he would be better prepared.

This is a great event that's being ran pretty well. We'll see what happens tomorrow when we get put on the big track.

Dan

GregWeld

Just left Danny's garage which is opposite my trailer -- and Larry Woo is there too --- they spent all manor of time fabing up exhaust mods. Very "creative" is an understatement...

Re the comment about DP being better prepared -- it's a Lingenfelter car - not Dannys... THEY do (or don't do) the prep. Give him credit for laying under the car until 10 O'clock making an attempt to save the weekend.

The GREEN '69 is WOT at 88 db.... stock suspension and is 28ish on the auto X.
That's called DRIVER SKILLS -- not lots of fancy parts... Stamped steel A arms - leaf springs. He's probably laughing his ass off at all your fancy pants cars running 30's. Nuff said.

Not sure what I personally expected out of the weekend -- but it's beating whatever those expectations where. Good group of folks here - having a great time - weather is dang near perfect... (could be a bit warmer)... Good vendor displays... Snap On - Baer - Willwood - Fox Shocks - Sampson Racing Communications (I bought a full driver to passenger intercom from him)... BF Goodrich etc.... with techs that actually are helpful. The school (conversation) I went to today on rebound settings and springs with the engineer from Fox was nothing short of amazing.

I get the sense that people are beginning to understand they have the potential to mess their cars up on the big track -- and are starting to take the attitude of -- "I think I'll just try to enjoy myself / there's nothing to win"... is spreading through the paddock. That's probably a good thing.

It's real easy to get to far left and catch the curbing of T1. Not too bad in a car, on a bike it's not much fun. :confused59: Find visual references on the bridge and one beyond the crest that works for you and you'll have the confidence to stay on the gas over the crest vs. lifting slightly.

Found that out on a bike cresting at 145ish with one skinny front tire and the bike is leaned in under braking.........major adrenaline rush! The MotoGP guys amaze me in that section as they're carrying 165+ over the crest.

The event was fabulous.... Anyone that didn't attend - for whatever their reason... missed a great bunch of people... and really well run event... a great track -- and sound just wasn't as big a deal as everyone made it out to be. So now - to me - that is all just a big excuse rather than joining in and having a blast.

The road rally was beautiful --- then dinner and socializing at the Embassy Suite was provided.... then two great days of racing.

I'm actually still here at the track... shining my big rig lights on the OPTIMA truck so they can see to break it all down... then Vinnie (their driver) and I will head off together to Texas Motor Speedway and do it all over again.

What a kick ass event! If you've got one of these events close, I strongly suggest showing up and atleast watching. We had plenty of time to run as much as we wanted in each event. We could hot lap or pull back into the garage and make any changes needed. Great weather, tons of smiling faces and a bunch of rad cars!

Jimi, Cam, Dennis all the volunteers and course workers made this event what it was, fantastic! I'd drive another 16 hours next weekend if they'd do it again.

We did well in all the events improving each and every time out. We also learned a ton, like a 4k lb car needs more brakes! The charger survived and needs nothing more than a bath and some air in the tires.

To be able to watch Danny Popp FLYING down the hill after the corkscrew, the show that Mike Maier and Filip from Cortex put on, almost bumper to bumper and the smile on Chris's face every time he stepped out of that challenger...PRICELESS!

Looking forward to Portland in August!!

I'm sorry for those of you that stayed away because of the 92db sound "issue"... if you did -- you missed out because while some guys had to do some TEMPORARY stuff to their cars like putting screen over their tips - or adding a resonator - or whatever.... every "mod" I saw was the hackey motto special -- very temporary - and for the most part worked pretty well. Some didn't have to do anything.

Not sure why Laguna is not offering 105 days
to any clubs this year.. they had 5 last year
and I along with many others finally got to
run their track last year.. guess I better keep
my video as that may be the only time

Its just not right for me to have to lift at
a certain place on the track and then wait
until you are past.. trust me most people that
run that track on a 90 or 92 or 96 day have to do
that in order to stay under or get booted

Its a fricking race track.. I can go to Firebird,
Pahrump and Reno Fernley and run 4" straight exhaust
like a real race car... love those 180's when they are
unrestricted!! Play with an unmuffled Nascar truck.. cool stuff

I crew for my buddy that has a vintage Can Am car and
they are talking about noise limits on them... that
is the thrill of going to watch them run..

I understand the limits are by the county but
like most racetracks that are not there any more
is Laguna on the list coming up??? Fremont, Riverside,
etc

Just venting one of the things that piss me off
I used to run straight expansion chambers on my
go karts and dirt bikes.. most of them sound like
lawn mowers now... How are the F1 cars going to
sound now with a turbo 6?

I'll get off my crate now and go work on my car
one of the things that settles me down:drowninga:

It's obviously not USCA's fault -- and they put on a fantastic show it sounds like -- but I could not agree more with you Bob about Laguna, lifting, noise, etc.

Panteracer
03-11-2014, 12:30 PM
Optima did a great job
and after seeing how much time they gave
everyone to run I almost wish I would have
tried to comply with the sound limit.. but...
I was booted from Sears 4-5 years back
for having 104,105 and knowing where the
meter was... short shifting etc.. car was running
on 7 cylinders with an issue and still could not
make the sound

Its kinda like driving the car around the block
and wondering if the man is going to pop you
The track is where you are suppose to be able
to let it loose with no worries other than getting
over your head

It's not USCA's fault, nor even SCRAMP's.

You needn't look further than the fancy faux-italiano villa's that immediately surround the track. People that bought and built on property nestled between an airport and a race track....then promptly sued or pushed local legislation to restrict the operations at both. In short - douchebags.

Not unlike the lawyer who bought a house up the hill from Altamont Speedway, then buried the track in legal fees and frivolous suits until he forced them out of business.....then he built a moto-x track on his own property. Douchebag.

Now I know what DB really stands for:)

We have a fellow Pantera Member who used to
race the Silver State many years back -(clocked at
246mph before he crashed) he bought in one of the
neighborhoods and built his shop.. lots of issued dealing
with everyone while building it... his neighbors hate him
We went over for a tour with our cars one day and his
kids were jumping dirt bikes in the front yard

The stories he tells about the rules etc
They passed a few for him in his neighborhood.. go figure

So yes I understand who

Can't stop the money train! Either adapt and get involved or watch it all go away. Money was paid to get the db level increased for this event, I'm sure more is paid when the historics run.

I'd be curious to know of the ten or so cars that had to adapt at the track, who is doing a more permanent fix?

Maybe we can all donate a tree to muffle the noise in the faster parts of the track:headscratch:....or some can just run a different exhaust.

Dan

GregWeld
03-11-2014, 05:29 PM
I don't like it -- but I totally understand the nature of what happens around these tracks.... People move in near them -- then every weekend there's the "race" noise.

Eventually -- if they are lucky the track reaches a compromise to quiet things down... and we know that REAL race cars are not going to do that... so WE are the groups that can modify our cars. I get it. Don't have to like it but I get it.

I look at a track like Laguna Seca and marvel that it has survived. Owned and run by the county --- think of the property taxes it would generate if they put high end homes up in those hills... they'd generate revenue without nearly as much hassle.

In the meantime ---- if we want events and organizations to survive and grow --- we need to SUPPORT them not bitch about something none of us has any chance of changing. Otherwise -- when you stay away -- then it becomes another nail in the coffin -- no demand for events -- no demand for a track -- and they pave the SOB over and we have NOWHERE to go. Vote with you wallets -- learn to adapt and modify (that IS the essence of hot rodding) and join in ----- or don't bitch when you have nowhere or nobody is organizing anything for us. We're in the middle of no mans land -- we are not racers -- we're street cars.... with racing wannabes as drivers. No sanctioning body would have us... and we'd have to build to their specs instead of our rag tag bunch of car combinations.

First off I love listening to raw exhaust scavenging as much as the next guy. I also understand the fatigue that loud exhaust have on drivers, thus why they all wear hearing protection. F1, MotoGP, and the other serious bar-raising performance classes need free flowing exhaust. But.....there are so many operators that want loud because it sounds fast and makes them think they're fast even though their vehicle isn't and never will be. They're the ones that create the negative perception.......the perceptions start on public roadways and neighborhoods and nurtures a stereotyped anti-noise culture. Very similar situation with off-road bikes and atv's.

Hopefully muffler engineers can bring new products to the marketplace that still sound great yet neutralize the retaliatory efforts of others. It's still the other idiots that never go to the track that will continue to create conflict. As long as there's products that will allow the vested track enthusiasts to carry on and deflect blame and not fuel the track closure movement all is good.

Technology has managed to silence jets, helicopters, and firearms as a few examples and still maintain reasonable performance, hopefully the aftermarket exhaust engineers can deliver as well.

Now can anyone tell me why Harley's everywhere get diplomatic immunity? That's one issue that just flat ticks me off. The epitome of loud and slow. :sieg:
