The wife and I have been looking for an early Mustang to replace the 68 she had before the boys were born. It had to run and drive and be something we (I) can work on while keeping it on the road. We found a decent 66 coupe that fit the bill pretty good. It's a straight six, automatic car with a disc brake conversion already done on the front (5 lug) it also came with a 5 lug rear axle that needs to be installed, that's not the only thing it came with....

I now am the owner of a very clean, unmolested, low mileage...1978 Mustang II! The seller had bought it to pull the running gear out and put in the 66, sounds good, not a bad way to go. Originally I had thought that's what I would do as well, than I started thinking.

Now I'm torn between selling it for as much as I can and putting the money into her 66, ooooorr. Lowering it down, sway bars and getting some better tires than the GrandAm's that are on it. It just rolled over 80k miles and I've got nice heads and a 4bbl intake for it.

I've got no shame and would have no problem rolling into the next Auto-X in this thing. It's free as far as I'm concerned and would give me more seat time and get me involved again.

Have I totally lost it? Are late 70's cars the next craze?
What would you do?

I'm sorry I have to be the first one to respond...

Sell it to the one and only guy that comes to look at it.

Turn it upside down and stick a mast in it. If you're lucky it won't float.

Don't listen to the haters. Have fun but know that the money you spend on it you won't get back.

I'll clean it up this weekend and post it for sale, if it doesn't sell I'm starting a build thread! :computer:

I'm a little surprised nobody has spoke up about the chump car series or Lemons. The last local auto-x I attended had quite a few low budget Miatas, 80's mustangs and just plain old beaters. Most the people I talked with had another car that was more competitive but were just running the beater for fun.

Last me ask you all this, what were you driving in 78?

Do that Dan, and we will have to respond with extreme prejudice.

Dan --- All I remember is that it WAS NOT a Mustang II.....

LOL

I was driving a BMW 320i having traded in my '76 2002 on the "new" body style.

I must admit to trading in a '74 Cougar XR7 on the 2002.... and the Cougar was every bit as bad as your II....

I have a friend who owns one. It came with a 302, and the ugly little car is a blast to ride in, as long as you don't come across anybody who you know. Something like that gets facebooked, or Instagramed, and your finished. Lol!
All kidding aside, as Charley stated, you could absolutely enjoy this car as a track car, but do your homework up front, concerning how much your going to spend to make this car "racey". :G-Dub:
