I am in the process of deciding what trans to put in my GTO. I drive it mainly on the street, with an occasional Auto-X. It is in desperate need of an OD. I have looked at The gear vendors unit, but are not really sold on it(Yet).

Any of you guys running a 200r4, or a 700 r4?

How about the 5 or 6 speed Tremec?

I am currently running a TH400

Thoughts?

I replaced my ST10 4 speed with a T56 Magnum 6 speed and have not regreted the swap. I considered the GearVendor OD unit but it costs the same as a new T56 so it became a no brainer to me. That said, since you would be changing from an automatic to a manual you will need to buy a complete installation kit from someone like Hurst Drivelines so the cost would be a bit higher.

Buddy of mine has the GV in his Charger, besides the fuel injection it's the best thing he's done. 3.55 gears, healthy big block and the ability to split gears makes for a really fun car.

He hasn't had any issues other than a vibration caused by the new driveline, once that was resolved its been trouble free.

If you want to retain the TH400, and you know its history then I'll say GV. I bought my GV used on ebay for half the cost of the new one (check CL as well). Installation was simple, took me one weekend. One note though, the GV made a clunking sound when shifts out of OD (was told it's normal). Sounded OK if you're moving slow enough. Sold it when I did the LS/4l60e swap.

Now if you want to go manual, then T-56 all the way.

The T56 swap transformed my car into a completely different ride, I love it.

I bought mine off of eBay, came out of a 1999 Camaro with 59,000 miles on it and came with everything from the clutch master to the driveshaft. In fact, I put that clutch in the car and it still works great.

It'd kind of a major swap though and has to be planned out, but there's been enough of them done that it's not really ground breaking. I had my car rolling under it's own power again in 3 weeks. Header clearance issues cost me about a week and a half though.

I run 3:50 gears and first gear is still pretty short yet in 6th I'm turning 1650 RPM at 65 mph...and it shifts like a dream...best of all worlds if you ask me.

Depends on if you're a manual or auto type of person.

To me, I wouldn't put a auto in anything. So I'd suggest the T-56.
