Project: Resale Red
As delivered:
1967 Camaro (V8 Base)
Engine: LS1
Trans: 4L60E
Rearend: 10 bolt
Exterior Color: Resale Red Special
Interior Color: Nantucket Blue
Suspension: Factory
Brakes: Disc

Plans:
Engine: Rebuilt LS1 (short term)
Trans: Century HD 4L60E with 3000 stall
Rearend: 12 bolt
Exterior color: Cyber Gray
Interior color: Cyber Gray/Black
Suspension: CPP Upper and Lower Control arms, QA1 coilovers, CPP Spindles with C5 Hubs, Hotchkis multi-leafs (-1.5 drop) in the rear
Brakes: CPP C5 Brake conversion F/R

Teardown is finally complete on the car. It’s headed to the body shop to begin repairing all the body panels, prep, and paint. The drip rails will be shaved and the seam between the rear quarters and the filler panel will be welded for a nice clean look.
Im using the factory subframe. I sent it off to Precision Powdercoat in Houston and they gave it a nice satin black finish. I highly recommend these guys for powdercoat work.

My son and I built a body cart, and it was a nice father/son project. Little over $100 invested and it works like a charm.

Nice project! Great to have your son involved!! Where does the resale Red name come into play? From the pervious owner I take it?

Thanks.

Resale Red actually came from a buddy of mine. He came over to check out the car, after I purchased it, and the first words out of his mouth were "Resale Red". He didn't mean it in an insulting manner at first but as we evaluated the car more, it lived up to that name.

I do not want this thread to focus on the past as I've forgiven the previous owner for what he did.

I'm open to all ideas for this build, so feel free to express your opinion on things. My goal is to have this car road worthy by next fall.

Hey Jason,

Glad to see you are going forward with the car and with what looks like a lot of gusto. I hope it turns out well for you. I hope that I have (a) a son and (b) a son who wants to help me restore cars!

Good luck!

Don't laugh but have you thought about a Ford 8.8? There are several articles (Hot Rod/Car Craft) that compared Ford 8.8 to GM 12-bolt, and they said the Ford is almost equivalent in strength, and cheaper to find/build. I have an 8.8 disc brakes out of a 2001 Mustang GT you can have (n/c), if you want it.

Is it a direct bolt-in?

I really appreciate the offer.

Not exactly. You need to weld on spring perches, since you're using leaf springs, shorten the axle tube to correct width, and redrill/get new axles with GM lug pattern.

Something to think about. I originally got the rearend to swap out my BOP 10-bolt rear, but decided not to do it (time constraint).

If you have time, and the ability to scrounge, look for a Ford 9 inch from a 67 to 69 Mercury Cougar. They are virtually identical and swap pretty easy into a first gen Camaro. It will need to cut off and weld on a set of spring perches.

Another option is to live with the 10 bolt. As long as it is the largest ring gear that is available in a 10 bolt (8.6 inch if memory serves), if you are not going to be regularly beating on it, and if you are running less than 500 HP, it will serve you well. Looks like it already has disc brakes. Just find a good shop to go through it and upgrade the axles, put in C-clip eliminators and a posi-unit and they work well.

Couldn't help notice to the hole on the fire wall and the dash panel behind it on the passenger side. Just curious what the plan was for that hole. Pretty sure you didn't do it.

Thanks for the input on the axle. I'll look into that. The 10-bolt should do fine with a stock LS1 for the meantime.

Funny you mention the hole in the firewall. It was the bright idea of a previous owner to run the LS engine harness into the cabin. To make matters worst, he cut into the seam. :hairpullout:

Mocked up the motor to see if I had clearance issues with the oil pan and crossmember. The motor mounts and plates that came with the car were not for a LS swap. Luckily Philip, CENCALC6, had a set of energy suspension mounts and LS plates he hooked me up with. The motor fits like a charm with the correct setup.

I bolted the trans up to see where the tailshaft mount lined up, and I'm going to use the BMR trans crossmember. A factory cross member was used previously and it caused the tailshaft to point upwards. I read the 4L60E pan should be at zero degrees when installed.

I will be reusing the Dynatech's for the time being. I checked clearance around the new steering box and everything looks good. Ground clearance looks decent.

Great pics of the kids!

I used to "help" my Grandfather and Uncle (he had a yellow 57 Chevy)....When I was about that age. So the '57 was almost new! UGH! When I got in their way - My Grandpa would dump a coffee can of nuts and bolts out on the work bench and ask me to sort them... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.... In the summer it was a coffee can with water and a paint brush - and he'd have me paint the house...

Guess that was "pre" X box.

I'm really pushing concepts with J so he starts understanding how things work. His questions are always answered. Their minds are sponges at that age.

FWIW, my 98 LS1 that had 172,000 on it looked almost identical when I tore it down. After a simple rebuild, cylinder hone and a crank polish, new bearings and rings, it's working great. Mine even had the 806 perimeter bolt heads like those, which ended up in the aluminum scrap bin as they aren't worth anything. Found a set of cheap low mileage 241's on craigslist to replace them. Not the best either, but the price was right and they looked new.
A Compcams trunnion upgrade will take care of the rockers too. Good luck, cool project!

You should check to see how much it cost to rebuild the engine vs buying a crate. It may be cheaper to rebuild it.

GregWeld
03-14-2014, 05:21 AM
I've had several motors rebuilt -- and have also bought "crate" motors (if you consider (Smeding Performance a crate motor - which I do). It - like most things - comes down to QUALITY - and QUALITY doesn't come cheap. In order to get the costs down - production has to rise - or corners have to be cut. And like most things -- it all depends. Depends on how you plan to use it. Frankly - you don't need much of a motor to cruise around to car shows... you need a completely different build if you want to hammer it on the drag strip.

A really DECENT motor is the HO350/350 from GM.... you can get one complete carb to pan - including distributor and spark plugs even (the distributor needs to be recurved!!) for very little money. Smeding Performance has some variations of horsey power and use -- also pretty affordable and complete.

Some crate engine builders actually offer a warranty - nice peace of mind....

Or a simple rebuild or yours... like RickPaw pointed out - just do some comparison shopping.

rickpaw
03-14-2014, 05:35 AM
Another thing to check is warranty from rebuilt engines vs GM crate engines. GM crate engines have 24 month warranty (there maybe fine prints). Rebuilt engines may not have warranties. My engine builder said when I picked up my rebuilt short block/heads years back that I have a 10 step warranty (10 steps out the door then I'm on my own).

I have heard of Thompson, never dealt with them directly, but reviews have been positive.

On that motor, I am not entirely sure I would want to take a 5.3 and bore it out to 5.7. I know the iron 5.3s have thick cylinder walls and can take it, but I have always been against enlarging cylinder walls, just to enlarge them.

For the price you are going to pay for that one, why not look for a completely stock 6.0 with low mileage. If you search hard enough you will be able to find one with under 10K miles, that technically hasn't even been broken in yet, for less than the 5.7 you are looking at.

Your car, your money, just my opinion.

Check out the Texas classifieds section on ls1tech. There are a few ls1's for sale on there now. Short block and long block configurations pop up for sale fairly often. Rebuilding seems to get expensive quickly, unless your planning a stroker or big power I would look for a low mileage 6.0 as mentioned above, prob your best bang for the buck

How about a GM Performance LQ4 crate?

Most of the bolt on stuff from the LS1 will work (intake/fuel rails/injectors/water pump with spacers)

IMO - I'd stay aluminum. Although the extra bore of an LQ4 gets you into some wicked awesome heads, and probably will be cheaper overall.

...I don't know, I'm torn in my own post. :(

May make sense to cost out rebuilding vs crate. Price is probably going to be better overall on an LQ build, not to mention once you go to the 4" bore you can get some real awesome heads. It's something I've thought about doing on my truck (06 Avalanche 1500) many times...

I'd stick with aluminum if I was worried about weight but that isn't an issue with my build. Cost basis on an iron block is better than aluminum. However, if I run across a deal on an aluminum block motor, you better believe I will snag it over the iron.

I saw a stroker moter come out of a crate and had visible aluminum chips where something was ground on after it was assembled and there was a sandy grit all in the motor (beads from a blast cabinet?) I just know there is no way in hell it would ever be put in my car without a complete dissasembly, cleaning and inspection.

I ordered a tilt column from Jim at GMTILT and bought this steering wheel:

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5565/14057918177_629956d966_b.jpg

After ordering the steering wheel, I found out most steering wheel adapters are designed for 69 and up.

Luckily I ran across a thread that tells you to use a Grant 5 bolt installation kit designed for 67-68 cars and a Grant to Momo (5-6 bolt adapter plate). Both pieces are billet aluminum and should blend nicely with the column.

Next I need to order the Holley front accessory drive brackets.

One word about the Holley drive. The ones I have spaced the belt too far forward of the engine block, making the belt out of alignment with the truck balancer. I had to cut the spacers to make every thing lined up.

The heat has been pretty brutal here lately in Houston. My garage is a toasty 102* during the day which is causing me to lose some enthusiasm to go work on the car. However, I've been making progress on a few things.

My brake system should be wrapped up when I receive the new master cylinder from Tobin, at KORE3. I went with new Inline Tube Stainless lines. Everything bolted up correctly. I had to modify the rear axle lines to accommodate the new Wilwood disc brakes but it wasn't bad.

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2929/14707928612_796bcbe71d_b.jpg

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5561/14708216115_6605895032_b.jpg

DSE (Koni) rear shocks were added.

Yesterday, I decided to bolt on the front drive accessories. I went with the Holley brackets and everything lined up pretty well. Everything is complete minus the power steering pulley:

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3924/14780493823_f4f82e8e23_b.jpg

The radiator is from Superior radiator. Its a very nice unit for the money.

Next goal is to get the fuel lines installed, along with the new Aeromotive fuel tank.

Forgot to add that I made some cribs for the front wheels. Amazing something so simple makes working on the car so much easier. I intend to build a set for the rear but the HD jack stands will do for now.

Great project for father/son. My dad and grandfather tried to teach me carpentry, but I just kept taking things apart and putting them back together - the lawn mower, bicycle, scooter, etc.. my brother claims that I was adopted since I'm so different from the rest of my family. So I envy you this father/son time. The build is going well. Wondered if you considered the GMPP FAED parts on Jegs or Summitt? They look to be less expensive than the Holly parts. Are you going to add AC to the car? I hope so given the heat/humidity of Houston.

Great to plan to pass the car to your son. I'm thinking as a college graduation present so that you have many years of driving fun with the car before that day.

Rod,

The car will not have A/C at first. The Vintage Air setup wasn't included in the budget so that will have to come later. I jokingly told my wife I was not going to put the windshield in until the A/C was installed.

My son and/or daughter will take the reigns when they are responsible enough to handle the car and fix whatever breaks. There will be NO high school joy rides for them.

I pray to God I have the chance to see them drive it.

I chose the Holley setup just because of personal preference. The GMPP setup is nice. I didn't want to purchase a new LS3 crank pulley since I already had the F-body pulley, so the Holley setup worked best for me.

Good line about the windshield. I use to joke when I had my 68 many years ago that I had 260 AC. 2 windows open and 60 mph was find on the hot summer days. Any less than 60 and "AC performance" fell off dramatically.

I hear you about your kids and waiting till they can be responsible drivers. My older brother nearly got my parents insurance cancelled in his first year of driving. So I wasn't allow to get mine until I was 18. Unfortunately, that was the year of the big family move to southern Oregon. Since my parents settled 11 miles outside of town, my younger siblings got their licenses at 16. Ah the joys of being special.

I'll pray that you see both of them drive the car someday. That will be a great thing for a father.

All good man. Thanks for the compliment. One of my motto's is, "Nothing good is easy". This car is testament to that. It would have been too easy if everything worked out perfectly.

Thanks man. The Rotiform LVS are my favorite. The build cost is steep for them, and I'm second guessing my decision not to tub the car. I might purchase a used wheel set in the interim, and do the mini-tub before buying the LVS wheels. The current wheels need to go. I believe one of them is cracked and the rest are pretty beat up.

I'll be on the lookout for wheel options at SEMA this year, as well as some other things.

In regards to my kids helping, they are the best helpers a dad can have. Last night, my daughter banged the front of the car with a wrench I asked her to pick up for me, and I just had to smile. I'll look back at that blemish in the paint and remember her handing me the wrench.

Its been a few months since I've updated this thread.

The car is still a work in progress. The engine has been wired and fired. Thompson did a great job with the motor and everything is running great.

Denny's is building a new driveshaft for the car and it should be here soon.

My dad came over to give me a hand with setting up the brake system and he is quite a fan of the project:

I had originally wanted a lowback style seat but changed my mind due to safety concerns. I ordered a set of Corbeau A4's for the car. My kids are enjoying them right now:

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7545/16338596961_fbae97c0fc_c.jpg

Next up is to get the AAW wiring kit installed and finish the interior. Glass will be installed soon, along with all the trim.

Here is a pic of the gauge cluster with the new Autometer gauges:

One question for the forum is what headers provide the most ground clearance. I'm running a stock subframe with Dynatech headers. The headers hang extremely low. I'm happy with the position of the motor, so its not an option to change the orientation. Has anyone used Hookers new mid-length header? My concern is the fitment around the 500 gearbox I'm running. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Jason,
Before you change out the headers, try flipping the motor mounts around, so that the tabs are at the bottom. There is a picture of the motor mounts for Ridetech Velocity Camaro on pt.com. Rumors had it that Dynatech used Velocity to develop the headers (post 57 in below link). I swapped my mounts around and gained roughly an inch.

http://www.pro-touring.com/threads/40893-Ridetech-com-68-camaro/page3?p=372493#post372493

Just a thought, unless you absolutely want a new set of headers.

Jay will be setting me up with a set of Budniks.

Did the flip of the mount alter your driveline angle? What is your driveline angle currently?

J

About 3.5*. No vibration. I'm using the recommended DSE mounts/Bowler crossmember though.

The new backlit Autometer's are pretty rad:

I was able to drive the car out of the garage under its own power for the first time since I got it. It was dark, so no quality video of the voyage.

I'm looking forward to getting this car on the road legally, even if it doesn't have a finished interior. :D

Thanks Tu. Nothing has been done to the wheels. I was fortunate to find a local guy to dismount and remount the tires for $60. That includes balancing. He did a great job.

Update:

I've put a few miles on the car and discovered I was having fuel slosh issues with the Aeromotive tank. Hard cornering and acceleration with around a 1/4 of a tank resulted in hesitation or a complete stall.

I contacted Aeromotive to see if they had a solution to the issues and their response was to drive the car more gingerly and have the tank above 1/3 full. Frustrated with that response, I pushed the subject with them about taking the tank back for a refund. It was met with resistance since I was 1 week past the 1 year Summit Racing return/warranty period, and Aeromotive is convinced there isn't a design flaw with their tank. After a few emails, Aeromotive agreed to take the tank back. I'm glad they decided to make things right, and I ordered the new Rick's stamped tank with the Vaporworx Gen 5 Camaro fuel module.

I got everything installed yesterday and the setup is working great. Initial impression was how much quieter the fuel module is, in comparison to the Aeromotive pump. I put about a gallon worth of gas in the tank and it registered just slightly above empty on the gas gauge. I took the car out for some "spirited" driving, and I'm happy to report there were zero issues. I was actually concerned the gas gauge wasn't functioning properly, so I filled the car up afterwards. The gauge works fine and its nice to see the needle isn't jumping around anymore when taking off or cornering.

I've yet to find a negative post about this system, so I was pretty confident it was going to work. I'm glad to report another positive experience with the Vaporworx/Rick's Tank combo, and I highly recommend it. The stamped tank is reasonably priced ($995 shipped) and I picked it up from MCB.

The flat black works well with the paint scheme of the car:

I am on my second fuel pump in an aeromotive tank in under 1,500 miles. I have burnt up a pump after each road course event this year. I talked with an aeromotive rep at Motorstate and he said the same thing. Keep the tank full. Didnt help me a whole lot when I missed over 1/2 the event with no fuel pump. Glad to see the Ricks tank works well. I am checking into other options now.

Hate to hear that! They sure are giving themselves a black eye with these tanks/pumps. $777 (Aeromotive) vs $995 (Rick's Vaporworx) IMO, that cost difference is negligible considering how much better the Rick's Vaporworx setup is.

Glad to hear the fuel tank issue worked out for you. I have a Tanks-inc set up, which is similar to the Aeromotive you had, and had fuel slosh issue near 1/4 tank. In fact I ran out of fuel during Power Tour.

If I decide to keep the Firebird, the new Ricks tank will be the next upgrade.

The car is looking great. Can't wait to see it in person.

I wish you would keep the car. You put a lot of work into that thing, not to mention a lot of money. You might as well enjoy it!

As far as your Power Tour experience, that freakin blows. Another case and point the Aeromotive/Tanks Inc. setup is not a good option for people that drive these cars like they are supposed to be driven.

I just noticed Summit Racing changed their description for the tank.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/aei-18657/overview/make/chevrolet/model/camaro

The last sentence wasn't there until I provided my feedback:

These powdercoated tanks also feature an innovative baffling/tray system to control fuel slosh and keep the fuel pump submerged. Aeromotive Stealth tanks are designed foremost to provide superior EFI street performance with OEM fitment, finish and drivability. The 340 pump supports up to 700 hp EFI forced induction, 800 hp EFI naturally aspirated, and over 900 hp carbureted engines, as well as supporting normal driving down to very low levels of fuel in the tank.

They also added this under notes:

This tank includes a GM 0-90 Ohm sending unit, installed Aeromotive 340 Stealth electric fuel pump, and billet aluminum fuel pump hanger. Stealth Fuel Tanks are not engineered for competition drag racing or road racing applications where extreme acceleration and cornering will occur with fuel levels lower than 1/2 tank

What's crazy is it won't even support normal driving conditions at very low levels. Tu, I believe your case verify's that! Correct me if I'm wrong.

Got "ole red" tuned today, and I have to say Patrick Guerra is the man when it comes to tuning. The car is a blast to drive now with its new tune. I was running the base tune from PSI and its nice having a custom tune finally.

If anyone is looking for a tune in the Houston area, I highly recommend Patrick Guerra (aka Patrick G on LS1tech).

It was tuned on a Mustang dyno and it has the capability to simulate a 1/4 mile. Here is a vid of the 1/4 mile simulation run:

Update:

Texas heat is in full effect and work on the car has slowed down.

I considered selling the car here recently but the whole process of selling is something I hate dealing with. I'm keeping the car for now and plan to add a vintage air kit and tidy up things that need to be addressed.

On the Power Tour, I noticed my steering was a little flighty, and I want to get that addressed. I'm thinking my decision to go with the CPP box was a poor decision, and I should have went with a better quality unit, like an AGR. I think the box is the culprit because my alignment is dead on.

In better news, I recently shined her up and took it down to a local car show and claimed 2nd in the Muscle Car category.

So here's my question....

What are the "specs" you aligned the car to?? Are you using the factory specs? Because if you are using the factory spec alignment I would expect the car to drive like it was hunting rabbits...

Big fat modern tires need more CASTER..... like 5+ degrees and more like 7* if you can get there.... and very little toe in - an 1/8th or less... and how's your BUMP STEER measurements?? Does the car dart around when you hit bumps and undulations in the roadway???

Greg,

Here are the specs:

Car does fine when I hit bumps. The flighty feeling occurs here and there on flat surfaces. I'm really unsure what causes it to veer. However, once it does start to veer left or right, I have to make a pretty decent correction to get it back on course.

Ron,

The majority of the time its veering to the left, but it also veers right on occasion.

Really appreciate the help.

EDIT:

When it occurs, its almost as if there is slop in the box and its allowing the wheels to turn in either direction, depending on the road surface, without affecting the steering wheel.

I think I know the problem. Not 100% sure, since this is a little weird. But I have a theory.

The 500 steering box is ... ummm ... an ancient artifact often referred as operating on a level of mammal feces. It has three big issues.
1. The soft metal the gears are made to wear quickly. But I don't think this is the case here.
2. The clearances in the box are less than precise.
3. The box doesn't like a lot of power steering fluid volume.

Your pump flows a lot more volume than the box was designed for. Combine that with the looser clearances ... and I am pretty sure it will create a "wandering condition."

Unfortunately, I don't know a simple way to test my theory ... other than replacing the steering box.

If you decide to not live with it ... and buy a box ... ideally, I suggest you use the new Delphi designed/Saginaw manufactured 670 Series ... blueprinted by a shop that knows their poop. Lot more money. Lot better box. $775 from Turn One Steering: http://www.turnone-steering.com/#!online-store/ciui/!/Performance-Model/p/47457386/category=12405583
