Give it up -- you can't read....
Ron met the boys... they're hauling his Camaro back on "the rig".... He's safely and smugly back in Cali. He may look dumb.. LOL... but he outsmarted the other two into doing his dirty work. Dave is so dumb he bought a truck just to do the job!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Okay -- that's all mean, but you gotta know I love these guys!

OMG Ron --- if these poor people knew about the Text train... My wife thinks I've turned into a teenage girl... and the phone buzzes right off the counter so I had to turn vibrate off. The only peace I've had for three weeks is when I went snow shoeing today at Galena Pass and there's no service up there!
LOL
So much fun!!! I'm with you -- I'd give anything to be right there with 'em.

After NASCAR shopping and late lunch we hit the go kart track down the street and with more uncanny timing we had the track to ourselves. We ran 2 races so whomever won race #1 would have to back it up and that proved fitting. I won the first race and Rob got me on the 2nd one. Before he comes on here to point out his Ford greatness and shifter kart racing past I'll say he did get fast lap of the day 44.4 to 44.8 and Payton right behind us.
In a related story.... a Chevy guy with 2 Fords and a Ford guy with 2 Chevies decided what more fitting of a place to call a truce than the U.S. Institute of Peace. I am sure it is a wonderful use of American tax dollars. :bang:

I'm pretty much embarrassed to admit 3 things from yesterday
1) Rob had a faster go kart lap than me (although he does like to bring up his w2w kart racing experience often for the record)
2) I hit the wall so hard on a 135* turn (thought it was one of the WOT corners) that I got air and bruised my ribs pretty good.
3) I aggravated the bruised ribs much worse by playing ping pong with Payton on his formal dining table. (Sorry Cheryl, I just had to mention that)

Dave/Rob, did you find the phone app that finds all the microbrews along a given route? So you put in a location from and to, it shows you all the micros/breweries along the route..can't remember the name off hand though. I knew a guy that did a trip last year with it and loved it.

A typical conversation on this trip with the countless locals that walk up to chat about the truck and/or car goes like this:

Got to Tennessee and just had to stop at the fireworks stand amongst the many Drive In Theater Screen sized billboards.
So to many of you this may not be cool but in the Communist state of California you would be arrested and waterboarded for this... so we thoroughly got a kick out of it. :) And it's amazing that it is legal to launch right next to anything (per the store gal I bought it from) such as power lines, gas tanks, etc.

Dave and Rob rolled in about 11:30 Monday night and we stayed up till 3:00 doing the normal meet and greet that Ron S and I have made famous (to us anyway). Needless to say we did not get the early start we hoped for on Tuesday, but did make it up the NASCAR "home depot" kind of places.
What we did not get to do was get in Charlotte Motor Speedway, it was closed and locked by the time we got there around 6:00. We also missed the shops and venders we want to see. Once you get shopping with these 2, time just seems to fly. I did score a Woodward column, quick release, firewall bearing and mount.
Karting was a ball, apparently I suck as I was beat both times. Thinking about scrapping the SB2 idea and sliding in a straight 6, that way I will have an excuse when I am slow on the track.
We had a big fun and as always the time was too short. Took a little bit of the south with them when they left in the form of some apple pie and muscadine shine.

Great time man.....that day and a half felt like a few hours.... thanks for it all. See ya again in a month?

^ Thanks Ron! The new subfr design is pretty stout IMO. The tub is also in good shape, I think. The rest needs some more work.
Like I said that lasted long, let's see how much longer before DB Cooper stirkes again.:popcorn2:
Every chance I get to follow this one, I have this crazy song playing in my head that says something about "west bound and down, loaded up and truckin, were gonna do what WELD says can't be done" lol
Between Nashville and Memphis the radio actually played clear. And down South they have some Rock and Roll stations:thumbsup: I think that tune may have come across the radio today.
Saw that piece you did for Ron.... man that was ridiculous cool. :rockin:

What can I say. The sting of amazing hospotality continues. Payton and his wife Cheryl put up with us and made us feel welcome.
Geeze Payton how you live in those parts and don't have a NASCAR parts stash in your garage I don't know.
I woke up this morning and wondered why my right forearm was hurting.:headscratch: At that point I remembered my using the berm as a combo brake/turn to make a desperate pass to catch Dave.
I think you are plenty fast in the Kart, but shear will came into play. NO WAY IN HELL was I listening to Dave for 2000+ miles talk about his Kart sweep victory.:guns:
We thought we'd get to ashville and get a pick of the Hauler inf ront of the Biltmore but this was as close as we got.

We made it up the road to Blairs where of course we were welcomed in for "stay as long as you want, sit down, want something to drink"
Look being part of this site of hanging out at any of the car events is partly about lvoing the cars and the adrenaline.
The other part is the people. I dind't really know Ron and Payton but they are great people and meeting and hangin out with them was really a highlight of this trip.
Same goes for Blair. He is a great guy but Dave is right he is my idol. Hey 15+ year ago he got T boned in a car and should have died. He came out fo it with two useless legs and now is in a chair.
But did that stop him? Did it make him bitter? F no. The guy went out and built some hand controlls and taght himself to drive without legs. Then he went out and set some NHRA SS records in his CJ Mustang he built. So yes he is an insipration to me everytime I get a chance to hang out with him.:king:
Last year Blair and I made a road trip from TN to Rodgers Minnesota to dyno my motor. He loves his road trips.
This morning, I think it was this morning we started our day out right. Coffee.

We made it from Nashville to Memphis recording 7.5mpg. I'm claiming a rookie driver win on this one since I crushed daves average of 5.5-6.5 over the last few states.

deep thoughts from the road...
Realizing that people in the south and middle parts of this great country are much nicer and friendlier than most Californians... ok that kinda sucks.
Good radio stations apparently are still alive.
Getting purposely lost somewhere -- physically and mentally -- is good for the soul. (so is fried chicken)

That's one thing I really enjoyed about the carpet business, all the "players" were in GA & TN.......and I can't get enough Southern Hospitality. Men treat the ladies like gentlemen should and the ladies are a Hoot! I still stay in touch, love the charm and Southern Belle accents!

Actually was talking to Payton yesterday, and we were discussing how you two were doing it right. I don't know about being laid back. Have you met DG? We have found a way to compartimentalize a huge amount of enerrgy into small pockets of last min research. We'll be rolling down the highway crosschecking Food TV network, Google, Yelp and formulating a plan put the miles behind us.
As soon as a change seems evident we go back into manic planning research and come up with an alternate we would have never thought of sitting down looking at a map before the trip started.
To simplyfy the explanation:headscratch: We just follow the Beer crumbs.

6.7 to 7.5mpg so I haven't matched DGs all time low just yet.
You see SKip DGs gas mileage isn't actually accurate. You have to factor in his love for dousing everything in gas.
Yesterday I watched him shower his jacket in gas. Not sure what that was about.
Then a ways down the road as I come out of the gas station I see what I think it a huge leak running under the truck....... I walk up on it to see a GAS fountain shooting out of the cap as the pump runs unattended. (Note to self never walk away from an "auto shut of" pump). That one alone was 3+ gallons.
Then at our last stop last night before we hit Sallisaw I walk about to see Dave wiping, you guessed it, gas off the side of the truck.:_paranoid I'm hoping he kicks the habit.

(Note to self never walk away from an "auto shut of" pump).
I normally subscribe to this school of thought, but I make exceptions when it's 10 effing degrees outside and the first gas pump in 3 states I find will work with the auto-fill function.
Rob's embellishment can run pretty deep (shocker)... :tv_happy:
And since we are into throw under the bus mode  Rob loves to drive slow in the left lane and get passed by big rigs on the right (he helps validate the notion that California drivers suck and don't know the rules of the road).
Oh, and he is also the only one thus far to stall Betsy with sub standard clutch manipulation. Very disappointing for a life long Ford driver.

I was almost tempted to just video the fountain until Dave returned but there wasn't an airport nearby.:popcorn2:
So instead I shut it off and pushed it forward. BTW DG is still complaining about the gas smell on his jacket. No embellishment needed:action-smiley-027:
A few hundred mi back I bought a 2 gal gas can as a precautionary measure. I fill it up and notice the F#*$ing seal on the brand new can is torn. I tried 2 get it 2 seal but no dice.
Right then a local walks up " hey is this a 66?"
DG "68"
Me "its for sale"
Local " I had a 69 with a 350 4 bolt"
As entertaining as this was it was 12 Fing deg out and I was done messing with the leaky can.
"Hey partner, would you like a free gas can and a couple gallons of gas?"
He focuses on the can and DG and I pull away..... the small red can fades to a small red dot in the rear view mirror.

Tonight while at dinner with 7 others ---- including Lennie Hamm who is beaming like a girl on prom night -- with his brand new @ first show ever Foulplay Firebird... I was trying to find him a part (chin spoiler) to replace his busted up one (he has a photo shoot on Monday morning)... so I UNBLOCKED a couple of the guys "on THE Thread" --- so I might inquire about possibly finding said part...
The phone started buzzing and chirping and lighting up like Chernobyl before the big blow.... 59 texts in about 13 minutes...
So... what's a guy to do?? EASY -- Block 'em all again. UGH!
The sad part is we are on separate road trips.... I'm dying to stay in touch and hear all the latest greatest about what they are doing.... not to mention the quips are straight out of the best comedy ever... but there's so much mayhem on the phone that it makes using it for anything else virtually impossible... so forced to have to take a scorched earth approach. It's all good... I hate it... but it's all good.

Okay --- this sounds like we need to put in some votes -- which would be way more interesting than what Charley is going to get for The Mule!
#1 - How many miles before the first breakdown
1A) - How many miles from civilization and no cell service will they be
#2 - Actual MPG for total trip
#3 - Miles per quarts of oil
#4 - Cost of kidney replacement
#5 - If they go to Austin - will they or will they not finally eat at The Salt Lick
[QUOTE=califconstruct;527249]Cool... looks like a fun trip. At least you'll get to visit several mechanic, and auto-parts locations. Make sure you take plenty of tools and your AAA card to tow that Ford!! :) Wouldn't hurt to throw a bike up on that Thule rack to pedal your way to the next stop, when it breaks down.
A couple you left out:
Avg MPH
Max speed obtained
Lbs. of fuel
$ in repair parts
$ in repair labor
# of texts
# of Starbuck stops
Geographical point at which they bag it and put it on a transport and fly home.
:D
You guys have some big balls taking a truck that probably has never been out of the state on a huge road trip like this, and not only that hauling a car back on it.
Plus ya got the Thule racks up top so you can take bikes along so you want have a long walk in the middle of bum f....k with no celll service....I see it as a win-win...
Fly in, hop in, turn the key and drive it HOME..WHERE'S THE CONFUSION??? :headscratch:

I'm just east of Memphis, very close to I-40. Beale Street has already been mentioned along with Graceland for touristy stuff. There are plenty of good BBQ joints around town along with Italian, Korean, Ethiopian, you name it.
I have welders, compressor and tools. A large shop you could drive into with a lift. A local good friend that is a dyed-in-the-wool Ford fanatic with probably a spare everything for that truck.
Safe travels and look me up if I can help!

I tried to unblock all the texting "perps" today --- driving from Vegas to home.... But NO.... 50 texts later I locked em all out again.
There needs to be a phone etiquette school...
Glad you guys made it safe and sound and there appears to be no mishaps or expensive breakdowns! So the trip was a complete success. AWESOME!

Number of texts in the train............easier to count stars.

Thanks for all the following along and the encouragement and offers of support. Wish we had more time to see and meet up with more members. Probably good we didn't meet up with everyone. That might take a year and Rob and I'd be divorced. :getout:
I have a migraine today (felt great the whole trip) and so I texted Rob that I am having withdrawals from oil, fuel, diner food and 80's rock music. :_party:
I'll have some final fuel economy numbers here when I catch my breath. Not sure I wanna do the math. :getout:
And Weld, we get it... You're important... you have things to do. Good for you. Now go build your big house that no one cares about. :lmao:

Great! I can take my nap this afternoon without the phone vibrating - buzzing - honking every half a nanosecond.
This was an epic trip and was fun to be along with you guys as you made the rounds. Part of the "selling point" of getting the rig for me - was that I love a good road trip... and being able to just float around at will was what made the difference for me in whether it was or wasn't worth all the effort. Nothing better than a good roady!

We were caught more than once saying how "epic" it would be to have a multi car hauler and have our cars (on jackstands, of course) in the back for wherever we wanted to stop.
I'm thinking I don't need a house for retirement. Just a rig like yours. I'm sure the wife will love that idea. :popcorn2:

Anyone who takes a trip like this should do a couple simple things.
1. Put the Food TV travel page in your favorites on your phone and follow Guys advice on Dinners, drive Inns and Dives; he is pretty right on.
2. Stop at any local craft brewery that posts a closing time that ends in "ish"
3. Use Aron's brewery app it's another winner.
4. Don't plan things out to much they always come out different.
5. Don't worry if your plans seem to fall apart, just reboot and make a new plan; and keep moving.
6. Never comply with the No Parking signs if you are only going to be away from your vehicle for less than 15 min. If you do it will slow you down and you will miss too much. (the exception is the blue handicapped parking spots; If you park in those you are a dick and deserve to be towed)
7. Never pass up a Maple Bacon glazed Doughnut fresh out of the oven.
8. Don't order Lamb fries they suck, no really they do, don't.
9. Spend the extra time to show your friends ALL the features on their phones. Like how to disable the audio alert for some people and display only the last post of each txt string so they don't feel like you are monopolizing their important phone.
If you guys' take 95 south you will be driving about 20 miles west of me through Prvidence RI . If you came down 95 or rt 93 to rt 24 you would drive right by my house in Fall River Ma. I'll be here if you need me or if you want some good Portugese food.
I didn't get to meet up with Rob at Cars and Coffe when I was in Cali for my daughters wedding.
I'll echo everyone about avoiding I-95 at all costs, DC has the worst traffic I've ever seen. I would take I-81 and drop down to I-40. You guys are welcome to stop by Jet Hot and check out the toy box, we are right on I-40/85 just east of the I-85 split to Charlotte. Oh you can bring Payton along too, he keeps threatening to come by here but I have yet to see the whites of his eyes. We have a few Ferds for Rob but some are Chevy powered :whistling: If you have interest in stopping by pm me.
Jay and ABS is about 5 miles form my front door... and I have a route through MA that will save you a few miles.. would love to meet uo with you guys.
I Could meet up with you around North East Philly around I-95. I saw your post on Ford Fe Forum on your Wild road trip. Great buy on the Ramp truck, was watching that one on EBay. I just picked up a 1965 F600 Ramp Truck in July that was sitting over 30 years, did a 800 mile trip to get it. Not road worthy as brake lines rotted and fuel lines, rust in tank also.
Let me know if interested, good luck!

Well damn, I just found this thread too late. You guys were in DC which means you were on I95. I am about 10 minutes from I95 exit 126 about half way between DC and Richmond. I love those old haulers brings back memories.

So, as I sit back in our unfriendly over-Democratic gun-controlling home state and reflect, I come up with many thoughts and personal conclusions. (pardon the cliches)
Seasons are something to be appreciated and hated at the same time. For everyone that loves California weather, it is stale and boring often.
People are just so dang nice everywhere else. Not that most aren't in Calif, but it sure seems others elsewhere take it up a notch. Restored a little faith in humanity for me personally. Just a little bit anyway. :)
The women in our lives will never understand the brotherhood. Might as well not waste any time trying to explain it either. Just tell them a complete stranger is coming over to use whatever they need and they are going to crash in the spare bedroom. Nothing more to say.
A trip should not only be about the destination(s) but about the journey and the struggles within.
You can never text too much on a road trip. Well, except for that one guy.
http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff245/flash68/how-to-put-iPhone-on-silent-mode-tu_zpsb406ead9.png (http://s236.photobucket.com/user/flash68/media/how-to-put-iPhone-on-silent-mode-tu_zpsb406ead9.png.html)
Oh and because the movement that brought us all together here (the Lateral G movement, that is) we must share our GoPro video of corner carving with the truck. Unfortunately it is at night but I can tell you Betsy performed admirably and by taking out the Mustang in the chicane... well, what more can you say. I won't comment on speeds reached on this road (Rob knew the road, I did not). Let it eat. Soundtrack by Metallica.

My 'better part of 2 days' comment was referring to adding the full day lost for the clutch and throwout bearing repairs..to whatever time you and Ron took to work on it at his place.

8. Don't order Lamb fries they suck, no really they do, don't.
9. Spend the extra time to show your friends ALL the features on their phones. Like how to disable the audio alert for some people and display only the last post of each txt string so they don't feel like you are monopolizing their important phone.
We loaded it late in the game but it did us right in Flagstaff our last night. Found 2 great spots it had listed and we closed one of them down for the finale.
First, thanks for the props on the diff cover guys. Had fun making it for Ron. As you found out by his hospitality, he's a great guy. Hope he can get his little go cart finished up and get it out on the track.
Second, how cool is it I helped make the top 3 on Rob's list :D Glad the app worked out. I'm a borderline beer snob and homebrewer, still learning, but that's the fun part - taste testing. Hey in Flagstaff did you hit Lumberyard Brewing? Pretty neat place and I remember the food being very good. I've been there when there was 2 feet of snow...who new it snowed in AZ:headscratch: . Speaking of, you guys timed the trip thru to south just right...recent storm has shut everything down.
So many of us I'm sure, would have loved to been on the trip you guys just did, you'll never forget it. Its good to hear your analogy of the brotherhood and its funny how most people don't get it. I shared a hotel room with a fellow car guy that I never met in person once. My wife asked how I knew him, my reply is well, I met him online :underchair: lol. I've since met a lot of really genuine, down to earth, nice people 'online'.
Glad you guys had a good time and made it back safe. I'm sure Ron will take care of all your expenses for hauling the '66 Camaro back for him. :slingshot:
Kinda bummed you guys are back, it was the best thread going here lol.
Guess I'll have to update some of my stuff and the wife's vette thread now to keep my mind off wanting to go on an epic road trip...

Rob,
I have been following your Torino build here and on Jay's site.
When you started the trip with Ramp Truck I was planning same drive with another old truck.
I read thru all the posts but forget which route you actually took?
I am hoping to make trip in less than 4 days with an even older FORD truck but a F600.
Would you do it again?
My trip is planned for 3wks from now . . . The truck I will be driving is nearing 50yrs old. I have no clue on the MPG but thinking it will be at least 1000 in fuel. Leaving from SE area of NY.

Rob,
I have been following your Torino build here and on Jay's site.
Cool feel free to jump in the thread once and a while the water is warm. I'm dragging on the build right now but will be back on it soon
When you started the trip with Ramp Truck I was planning same drive with another old truck.
I read thru all the posts but forget which route you actually took?
We went down the 95/85 to the 40 then all the way across to Flagstaff. From there down the 25 (if I remember right) to the 60 thru Wickenburg then the 10
I am hoping to make trip in less than 4 days with an even older FORD truck but a F600.
Where are the pics of this truck? Don't be stingy, share :snapout: You want to make it in 4 days? :headscratch: :headscratch: :lostmarbles: Sorry had to say it :lmao: We took 9 days. One day was a no travel day in NC so say 8. If I remember you are in AZ and you are leaving from NY so I guess you can subtract a day on each end to get you to 6.
Would you do it again?
Hell yes. BUT If you asked me if I'd try driving from NY to AZ in 6 days I'd say no thanks. :shakehead: If I did it again I'd want at least another week over the time we took. Also make sure you have a good wingman. Without a good friend sitting next to you it would be a long journey
My trip is planned for 3wks from now . . . The truck I will be driving is nearing 50yrs old. I have no clue on the MPG but thinking it will be at least 1000 in fuel. Leaving from SE area of NY.
So we got 6-7 mpg the best we did was 8.5 unladen. I'm pretty sure fuel will be more than $1k. Really in an old truck doing 60-70 max 500 miles a day is a full day. Our drive was about 4k miles. Lets say yours is only 3k I'd still want at LEAST 6 days to do it.
If you are a go I'd say post up some details right here or start a new travel thread. Really thousands of txts and a few hundred posts telling us we were nuts during the trip added to the experience and kept us motivated.
Welcome to Lat G and good luck with the trip.
Now post some pictures of the cross country F600  :ttiwop:
