Another 70 Camaro auto cross car. I thought I would share my build hoping everyone that contributes to the site will have some helpful insight. I'm building this car specifically for auto-cross, yet it will be street legal. I purchased the car nearly a year ago from Roger Lee at Ironworks and had it shipped home to start the build. Since then I have slowly repaired concerning spots in the sheetmetal and collected several new go fast parts. The car is getting the full Detroit Speed suspension treatment(complete front Hydroformed stub and quadralink) along with DSE cage, firewall block off plate and mini tubs. I plan on running the GM performance LS3/525 and I have already ordered an M22-W from AutoGear. I just received my 3rd member from Competition Gear and Transmission in North Carolina and am awaiting my new quictime bellhousing. I just finalized all my wheel dimensions with Jay @ Budnik(Thanks Jay) and will pull the trigger on those as soon as the suspension is bolted under the car for the last time. I have lots of other details but will stop here and provide some photos of my progress. I was able to make it to SEMA this year along with the last Goodguys in Scottsdale, the competition seems to be growing rapidly and I look forward to joining in. Thanks, Cal.

The pics above are kind of a fast track of my progress. The car was a shell only when I received it from Roger. As you can see, it's received a new roof, its stripped, I have started filling the firewall and it's now on the twirler(thanks to my son Mac). As soon as I can get the picture attaching figured out I will post recent pics of my progress.

Thanks, Cal.

Thanks Brian. I really enjoyed watching your car being built and it turned out fantastic. At some point in the build I would like to ask you some questions regarding weight, especially front to rear percentages.

It was nice running into you too and I enjoyed watching you run in Scottsdale. It's a little rough, but it's been fun working on it and when you repair as much as we have you know when your done it's a solid car. These pictures are fairly old, I will grab new ones this week and post current pics of the car. And thanks for the tires, paul says you have some skins we can use for the build. Thanks, Matt.

Sure thing. When you're ready for some test fitting, just let me know. Between Gregg and I, the "tire shed" at Best of Show stays pretty well stocked with old tires.

Here are some pis of the car after blasting. I replaced the passenger side rocker, built a small piece for the bottom of the quarter and replaced the drivers quarter skin. The trunk is in and window opening(verticals on sail panel) is also in but needs welded up. I wil post more pics this weekend.

Thanks, Cal.

Mac&Otto
12-09-2013, 07:48 AM
The rocker was fairly easy but these small patches in front of the wheel open were more work than expected. It's layered and has a heavier gauge inner structure that also ties in to the wheel well lip.

Mac&Otto
12-09-2013, 07:52 AM
The quarter wasn't too bad except, as everyone knows, the aftermarket panels are never a perfect match and trusting reference points on the panel to make final cuts is a little time consuming.

Thanks Jay. I'm headed back to the shop on Monday and will post more pics of my progress. I'm hoping to finish the install on the wheel tubs and then weld in the top 4-link mounts. Then it's bolt up suspension. Should go a lot faster from here on out. Thanks again for your help.

I was reading my initial intro and I thought I would share a little about myself and why the camaro. First, I've been around cars, bikes, boats, etc. my whole life thanks to my dad(Phil). I'm also lucky to have a dad that is an amazing craftsman, mechanic, fabricator, you name it, he can do it. I've been through lots of projects and he's had his hands in on every one. He still runs around with his hot rod buddies from high school and I run around with their sons. All of them still very active into cars. Now, the reason for the camaro. I met my wife nearly ten years ago and before I met her parents she told me of her dad's camaro. I pretty much DIDN'T listen to her, what girl knew about cars. Then I met her parents and eventually that same day her dad(Paul Alderman) asked if I wanted to look at some cars. HOLY CRAP, Paul had and still has some amazing cars. Just look on DSE's website and look at his 69 and 70 camaro's. Don't think because DSE built these that he doesn't get dirty, he is very active on his on builds and wait until you see his 72 chevy truck he just finished. Paul has an eye for cool cars , technically is a wizard and it seems the older he gets, the faster he wants to go. So, eight years later, several hours in the shop, several more discussing how to go faster, the Camaro was born. So we decided to call DSE(Big Thanks to Kyle and Stacy), cut out all the unnecessary weight, add some of our own ideas, apply both of our skill sets and build a autcross car. Don't worry, my dad will be getting dirty too, he likes to act like he's not excited to get in on it, but he is. I won't leave out the wives, they support all of our crazy ideas and as long as Goodguys keeps putting on shows near a shopping mall, we're good. I have had lots of support from other friends that I will list later in the build but thought I should at least explain the start.

Thanks, Cal.

Thanks. Paul's car is great and DSE did a great job. The car was a local car that Paul bought minus the motor and trans. He stripped it here in Ellensburg and delivered Kyle a painted shell. It's a pretty classy car. I just read your project post, did you figure out the wheels? I think it's a ZX3 and I know he had the fasteners reversed to the inside. I also think they had to clearance the bolt heads to clear the calipers. Let me know if you want any details.

Yeah, that which ones they are. I also got to meet with Forgeline at SEMA to see them in person. The frontend is getting the worx right now, once that is done and i've saved a little more money, the rear end and wheels will come at once....but that buckets running a little dry right now as i just completed the LS swap and have to redo a couple of things...

Thanks Tim and I appreciate the time you took to talk with Paul and I. Your car is great and getting your input helped me make some decisions on mine. I decided to go with the 10.5 front wheel and DSE verified the offset, thanks for your help. Have a good Christmas.

It's DSE. I was able to see it in my father in laws car before I bought it and it does tuck away nicely. They also send you base plates for the rocker and trunk, a midbar right behind the seats with a coupler to make it removable.

Thanks , Cal.

Nice C-10!!

Thanks. It was a fun project and drives like a new car. The goal was to keep it very simple, yet arm it with all the new amenities a new truck would have.although I'm not a fan of messing with these trucks too much, I think we pulled it off without sacrificing the great original look.

Thank you. It's a Morrison chassis for a 55 Nomad. That's my father in laws next project. We are building this one too, minus the chassis of course. It's going to be a nice car. Art and Craig live about 80 miles from us and they are great to work with. The day before my wedding Art and Craig gave a few of us in the wedding a full tour of the shop and then of Art's personal shop at his house. Great day with great guys.

It's been a while since I've been in the shop but here is some photos of new goodies and progress I made today in the shop. A good friend of mine has taken three days to help me install all the rear DSE quadralink, finish wheel tubs and button up a bunch of miscellaneous fab work(Thanks Shad). I thought I would also post a pic of my shorty I have for sale. It's a 78 Heavy Half pretty much completely loaded. It's only missing power windows and door locks. It's 99.9% rust free and runs and drives great. The only thing missing is a wheel opening molding and the jack that mounts on the passenger side inner fender. I'm asking 5800.00 and it's located in Pasco, Washington. PM me if anyone wants more info or pics. I was going lower it, wheels and tires and swap a 5.3 in and it but have too many cars going right now.

I managed to put some time in on the car today and hopefully Some more Saturday and Sunday. I finished welding in the lower 4 link pockets this morning and those of you that are familiar with DSE's quadralink know you re-use the original spring pocket as the new mount. I bolted on the front stub and almost finished the rear of the car. I also dropped a plumb bob from several points on the car and squared up the front stub. Tomorrow I'm cutting in the frame connectors, installing the 3rd member and axles, bolting on some rollers and getting it on the ground. I'm shooting to start the remainder of the cage on Sunday.

I'm headed to Palm Springs and Scottsdale for the next three weeks and then the Portland Swap meet to unload left over parts from all our projects. I won't get back to the shop until the first weekend in April, kind of sucks, I'm pumped to get the cage finished. Oh we'll, it will give me time to get motor and wheels here.

Thanks, Cal.

Thank you. I'm running a M-22W built by AutoGear. As an auto cross car I decided to sell my TKO-600 not needing the extra gear. I save a considerable amount of weight and was able to specify the gear's I wanted.

Yes sir. I'm hoping April is a productive month for the camaro. Paul will be home at the end of April and we will start on his Nomad too. It's good when he's around because he's good at getting things prepped and ready for our work weekends. By the way, your car is looking pretty good and that bumper is really cool.

Cal,

The car looks great. However try being a car guy in Chicago. Between the Ice, the snow, the pot holes, the salt and the below zero temperatures it really sucks and don't get me started about Mountain bike here in the winter. I had to buy a fat tire bike so I could ride in all of the snow we have here. Did i mention the 3.8" wide studded tires for bike cost over $200.00 each.

Thanks. Maybe I shouldn't complain after hearing those details. One thing I would do different on those 200.00 mountain bike tires, they would be connected to a motorcycle. You mountain bike guys are extreme, I like gasoline powered toys. I'm sure those bikes are cool.

I feel Marty's pain, literally. My garage is nothing more than an inclosed car port. Works great for sheltering the car and bike but there's zero insulation. I can't really do anything unless it's in the 50 or higher with sun and little wind. It's frustrating. So I just hang out here looking at people like Cal making progress on their rides and I try to live vicariously.

I'll try to continue making progress and make it entertaining. I should just film the build when my boys come in the shop. They're 3 1/2 and 2. Everyone on this site would log in to watch. It's pure pandemonium, one has a screw driver the same size as him and the other is using the creeper as a skate board. It's pure comedy.

Sounds like my garage when I started building the Syborg truck. Not sure when but i hung a baby swing from the rafters so i could contain one of them so I could work on the truck.

ps - make sure it has a child proof buckle so they can't get out.

Cal, are you thinking something similar to the Recaros in Paul's second gen, but with more bolstering for the track, or are you thinking somewhere along the lines of a vintage looking bucket seat for racing.

I like these for vintage. When you're down in SoCal you want to stop by Sube Sports. I went to buy a driving suit and ended up sitting in all of their various display seats.

I like the Recaro's but don't necessarily need a high end leather seat for a car without interior and door glass. On the other hand, I like the look of the Cobra you sent me but I do want a seat that has some adjustability for drivers other than me. I haven't done much research but maybe I'm hoping for something that's not available.

Here's a question I hope someone can answer. How do I choose the correct brakes for my application? My car is strictly autocross and should weigh in around 2800 lbs. I'm running the full detroit speed catalog of suspension, LS3 525, 18x12 and 18x10 with BFG's. I've heard several suggestions on what to run and not one suggestion has been the same. I've had different suggestions within the same manufacture. I've been told to use 14", 13", 12", performance level, race only, booster, no booster and I'm struggling to commit to anything. Anyone have a suggestion or individual I can contact that can walk me through this. Lots of guys can sell you brakes, but few can really walk you through a detailed/educated reasoning for the application. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Cal.

Call Tobin, He'll run you through what you will need. Get a comfy chair, a note pad and a tall cup of coffee ready.

I'll toss in a dime, since its a track car, look at the rotor and pads a serious wear item that you will replace frequently. A set of $300 rotors might not be a good choice. That why I love factory stuff or at least an aftermarket company that uses it.

If you're going to do strictly auto-x then the C6 Z51 Kore 3 brakes are plenty of brake for that. I would stick with a floating caliper in the rear with a non floating axle to combat knock back.

The manual vs power is really a preference imo, I prefer power brakes because I find it easier to finesse the pedals when your not using so much leg effort on the brake pedal.

Yes, what Tim said. I called Tobin and he talked me down from the rigid caliper Z06 style. I couldn't be happier with my C6 Z51's, with upgraded DBA rotors and Hawk HP+ pads. I chose manual and love the "feel" of them.
Of the 7 or 8 autocrosses I did last year, I think I only locked my fronts one time at Indy. Very easy to modulate the manual pedal in my opinion.
FWIW, I have not felt knockback at all with a solid axle and the floating calipers.

I'm running Kore3 C5 "big brake" with 12.8" DBA, Hawk HP+ and Wilwood 7/8" manual master and love them. I prefer the manual feel due to my motorcycle background. DBA rotor isn't magical, just good fundamentals - 1.25" thick, good cooling vanes, not drill so less chance for stress cracking. IMO I have more brake than my front 245/40/18 NT05's can handle. Call Tobin, he'll spend the time and ask the right questions required to deliver brakes that meet your needs.

Sieg nailed it. Not magic, just better quality castings. I have almost 3,000 miles and lot's of aggressive driving, autocrosses, and two road courses, the rotors look perfect still. I've heard of warping issues with the GM ones also.

I'd agree on the braking power with Sieg, I had the same front tire and could easily lock them up at will. The Rivals offer more grip for sure, but still more brake than tire. Hoping 265's will help :D

Hard to beat the Z51 cost and performance wise. We still run stock rotors cause you can almost get them for free if you look.

Vince, Tobin recommended the 7/8" Wilwood since I went full manual. Used factory pedal in the manual, upper hole, position. Good pedal travel, not too much and very firm at the braking position.

Just kidding. Tobin explained things the other brake reps did not. The other reps always referred back to having plenty of stopping power. Tobin discussed, rotating mass, heat, pedal feel and the cause and effect of different set ups. Any brake guy can sell you plenty of brake, I've ran into very few that can really explain the four hundred other things that go along with it for specific applications.

Thanks. No, I'm just using it for mach up while I finish the fabrication. Deducting the difference does help the balance but I still need to be conscious of the front weight. I'm not sure you can get enough weight out of the front of these cars.

It really makes it easier to understand all the set up theories and reasoning when you are able to see how the weight affects the balance of the car and what the final numbers are. If the Nomad came out kick ass you didn't waste your time. I see it as an evolution in skill production.

Thanks. Remember, I had to pull the cowl to replace the roof in the beginning of the build so it worked out perfect. I also was able to repair a spot of rust right under the wiper motor(lowest spot in the cowl with no drain). Hers a shot of the Nomad in progress. Metal work is done and chassis just need a little plumbing, then it's off to paint.

Sorry to side track the thread but did you have to replace any of the roof section? I have one and would like to see what it looks like under the paint.

If you have time or info please email to [email protected]

Mark Stielow is using Centerforce on his latest build. No sure if an aluminum flywheel is in your budget.

Thanks!

My budget was shot a long time ago. I definitely want to run an aluminum flywheel. I thought I would do some searching at SEMA. I'll email you tomorrow on the Nomad. Thanks for the help.

Here are some more pics of the recent progress. As soon as the cage was finished I dropped the car off at Rockets Garage in Outlook Washington, just an hour west of me. Riley Morris is the owner and his shop does quality work. I was struggling for time with the Nomad build and Riley had an opening in his shop. They did some sheetmetal fab, some patch panel stuff and welded up everything I didn't finish. They did a great job and I'm glad to be over the hump. This will allow me to start hanging fiberglass components and then on to prime.

Bulkheads are all finished up. These were a pain. I tucked them up,tight to the cowl flange and there is several layers of metal in that area that sometimes make clean welding a little difficult.

Thanks Rick. The whole nose, doors, deck lid and bumpers are glass. The nose is all separate components. I scaled them them and all of it is 99lbs, less than one factory door. I'm scaling the car today and will give you a current weight with the glass. I will also save weight because the Mach up motor is an iron 5.3.

It's been a while since I've really made progress on the car. I'm working pretty regular again on it and have made some progress. I also sent my front wheels back to Jay at Budnik to have them re-hooped. I went back and forth regarding wheels and tires and finally decided to make the jump. Now they are 11" wide and I will modify the front fenders. Budnik did an excellent job and Jay convinced me to brush finish the hoops as well. I like it. DSE provided me a set of Kyles take-off 315's for fitment and they have some runs left in them. Thanks guys.

We will both be there but not sure who will drive. Paul won the muscle machine of the year finalist in March and the car has to be displayed in a specific spot for the show. Not sure yet if you can autocross and show as well. I would like to see Paul drive because he's finally having fun and making progress in the car. I will be the pit crew.

Well, I managed to get a little more time this weekend to work on my car. I installed new door latches and strikers, installed my new Hurst super shifter built by David West, took final dimensions on my driveline and installed the front runner on my motor. Everything worked out fairly good accept the balancer, I have to order a new one as it doesn't line up with the Corvette front runner. Outside of that, it doesn't look like much but it was progress.

Mac&Otto
06-28-2015, 12:02 AM
I had David West build me a complete shifter assembly. I went with a Super Shifter and I'm glad I did. He put together the shifter, mounting bracket, linkage and pre assembles it on another trans for you. Ready to bolt on when you get it. It's a flawless piece and as he said, fit perfectly when I got it.

I also received and started bolting up my clutch, pressure and flywheel. I used Modern Driveline out of Idaho and they are extremely knowledgable and helpful. I used a superior Kevlar clutch, chromoly flywheel, pressure plate and tilton hydraulic bearing and master. The service was fantastic and I suggest talking to them if your in the market. I measured up the driveline and will send the info to them on Monday.

Then it is tear it down and start body and paint. I can feel it.

Sure, you can go with smaller, lighter tube by using ChroMoly.

Then again, that stuff doesn't really see any real impact, etc, so why use something so expensive. Thin wall HREW would hold it just fine, I think.

I get using ChroMoly in roll cage that protects you, but in this use case, it's just supporting weight, right?

If you are planning to build your cage to pass tech, check the rules first.

1.750 .120 wall tubing is usually the norm in a rule book. Using ChroMo will be pointless as it will not offer a weight savings.
