1965 Dodge Dart GT it was a 273 with a 4 speed. Its getting a supercharged 5.7 punched out to a 392 with a tremec 6 speed. The front suspension is from Magnum Force and the rear suspension is a custom torque arm with a watts link with ride tech coil overs. Wayne and Pam McGriff at M and M will be taking care of the interior.

The reason for cutting it in half is we wanted the car to look more aggressive and have better proportions. These car are really narrow and really long, so we wedge cut the roof 2 inches and instead of leaning the A pillar or lengthening the roof we decided to shorten the car 2 inches behind the B pillar. We also stretched the wheelbase 2 inches and that will allow us the move the front wheel opening forward in the front fender 4 inches to make the overbite go away.

Here are some more pics. When we cut the inner wheelhouse out behind it we found where an unhappy assembly line worker had been. On the inside of the quarter panel they had wrote a 4 letter word in the rubber coating sprayed on there by the factory. We got the body stuck back together and the front wheel well cut out and playing around with the placement of that.

Awesome work guys!! Really love to see this era of Dart done right!

Quick question, if you rake the roof and dont lean the pillar back, what do you do with the glass, have it ground? Or do you have someone that cuts it?

Wicked work. Love it!

The guy that is doing the work on the windshield said he was just going to grind it. We are not going to be using the stock rubber so it will only need to be ground down about a 3/8.

Here we cut off the part of the deck lid that went down to the bumper and raised the body up past the taillights. We wanted to clean this area up where there was no gap between the taillights and the gas filler will be in the back panel, fabricated a new package tray and have started the exhaust.

The main reason for the circles was to ad character to the panel. There are circles all over this project so we just continued with the circles under the car.

I must of took 25 pictures of this car today. I'm working a 76 Duster and I have a real soft spot for A body mopars. The guys over at www.forabodiesonly.com are getting a real kick out of this car.

Would you mind if I posted some of my pictures?

Congratulations Big Oak Garage on the Great 8 win! That is a stunning car, very well done. Glad you got the recognition you deserve. Quick question cause Im dying to know.... did having previously posted build pictures and body shots etc play a part in any way to not making it to the top? I know the Imposter is a stunning car, I was just curious. Im a stranger to Detroit Autorama, but from what I read they make it sound like you cant show anything really of the car. Just curious!

Congrats though, It would have been cool to see a Lat-G member such as yourself take home the Ridler. But hot damn, a Great 8...... I can only imagine what it feels like. Great job, post some more build pics! I want to see the interior!!

It was my pick to win, if you had a stock Dart sitting next to it for judging, then you could really appreciate how much work this took. It came out great.

This car was stunning in person and Will and the guys that built it are first class. They didn't know me from Adam and took all the time I wanted to talk about it. I posted this in Al's Autorama thread but thought I should put it here as well. To everyone that considers themselves builders and have people pay them to build these cars take note.

The best part of the show to me wasn't even one of the cars or even this car. I obviously spent some time in the Great 8 area Saturday. All the time I was there I noticed the owner of the Dart. His name is Willie Maise. I could not help but notice what a fantastic time he was having the whole time he was there. He truly enjoyed talking to people about the car and was so proud. He was laughing and smiling every time I saw him. Anything competitive brings alot of drama, especially indoor car shows with this type of award. On the outside it looked as though he could have cared less. He was proud of his car, proud they made the great 8 and was having a blast. That's what this is all about in my opinion. So for Will Posey and Big Oak Garage, not only did they build a fantastic car, they made one owner a very happy and satisfied and gave him a weekend he will I'm sure remember the rest of his life! That's what it's about in my opinion. Kudos Will!

The door windows are glass, but they are flat. You can make templates and have them made out of acrylic. Carmen at AM hot rod glass can handle that for you. They can have a scratch gaurd put on it so it will not scratch. http://amhotrodglass.com

Great choice of car--I have a friend who built and ran one of these Darts in the La Carrera Panamericana in 2010 or so. It'll be cool to see this car moving!

The handles are actually out of a Nissan GTR. We changed the trim ring up so it did no go all the way to the edge of the door.

Where does a person find Nissan GTR handles?

Do you have install pictures of how you put them in?

Thanks, Joe

Joe

You have to get them from a Nissan dealer and the dealer we used required a VIN number to purchase any GTR parts. So knowing someone that owns one will come in handy. We used the outside handles, interior handles, latch and striker. I will see if I can did up the installation pics for you.

This is just the part that you pull to open the door. You need the handle assembly to make it work.
