I'll of course be looking most forward to this sale....
Oh that Mule! I remember building one engine for Mark that had no turbochargers, then Charley complained. Was a bunch of fun running it around Detroit getting the cal worked out.

Somewhere the j2000??(Pontiac) or the old pink SHO maybe that dobberson built? I remember seeing those cars at street machine nationals in south bend indiana back in the day. Miles of tweed....

All that's debatable, but Stielow was doing pro-touring Camaro's way before Kyle's yellow car (Twister) was out. I remember Kyles "Twister", and Stielow's "Thrasher" at GG Columbus way back when, maybe '00 or so. Both got a SMOY top 5. Kyle won.

In 1993 Mark won the Car Craft Real Street Eliminator in a White 69 Camaro.

For me Big Red showed me it was possible for my car to do it all.
The Mule showed me that you do not need a big name high dollar shop to do everything. I do everything myself in my garage since I have no money and love the car more because of it. Thanks Mark!
Make no mistake If I had the money I would contract a build, or better yet bid at the auction.

I know that cameras roll the entire time, it's a shame you can't view the complete auction footage. I'm sure there is a reason they show some cars and not others but they always seem to miss cool stuff I want to see. I end up just recording the televised deal and fast forward through 99% of it.

Yes GW, I do know there is a fix... but you refuse to adopt another son, sooooo...
I have to budget out each year my trips, parts for projects, and tools. Which I am NOT complaining about. Gives me a chance to look forward to, get, and thoroughly enjoy each one. I'm very lucky to have any of it. Barrett is on my trip bucket list (along with GNRS, Hot Aug Nights, etc.).

Personally -- I'm still in shock that you're selling this Icon....
That's not just any ol' '69 Camaro --- It's THE MULE!
But cars should be a "sail it or sell it" decision unless you want to be a museum -- let someone else use it if you're not going to.
I feel for you Charlie. It's not just another dime a dozen Camaro. But I can understand the decision having Mayhem in barn.

I was curious about this too but skeered to ask. Can't be money or space. How do you get sick of having the Mule around to enjoy? Especially when you have the evolution of the Stielow brand sitting around it?

I'm not sick of it but I'm not doing it any favors by just letting it sit. I could use the money and I turned 60 last year. At some point you start getting rid of stuff to simplify your life. I sat and asked myself if I was ever really going to use it anymore and said "no". I took Mayhem to Laguna Seca on the day after Thanksgiving and have not driven it since. Just not driving them as much as I used to. Me and my Wife did four Power Tours in the Mule plus a bunch of Hot August Nights Reno etc. Every part of that car is cool.

So at the risk of sounding kind of "snobby" or whatever you want to label it... and I don't want to come off that way AT ALL... anyone that knows Charley -- or knows me -- would tell you that we're not aloof or car snobs or anything of the kind.
But when you have several cars... and have had many -- and many of them the best of the best... then after awhile you look at your cars a little differently. We know we can buy more if we want to. We know this is not the last hurrah... it ain't the first goat rodeo and it likely won't be the last. So it's not like many people that have finally built the car of their dreams and spend years doing it -- or put their life and soul into it. And for most folks -- I can understand how they would look at THEIR car and never imagine selling it.
I wish now that I hadn't sold a couple of the 50 + cars I've owned... but really - 2 out of 50? That I really really wished I hadn't sold... and one of them is owned by my a buddy and he's trying to sell it back to me all the time... but I know why I sold it - and that hasn't changed (it's a super low original mile '67 Vette L79 Coupe -- driving it is ruining it).
So what I'm trying to say is that the REASONS for selling are different... and a lot of it has to do more with "use" than lack of love. But reality sets in and you look around and realize that you haven't driven something for a couple years!! And we all know that's not good for a car. When that happens it's time to pass it on to someone else.
We'd all love to be able to buy and keep every car we ever wanted -- but even for folks that are pretty well set -- there's limits. Limited time - limited space - and limited funds - and limited interest.
Watching this icon go across the block will be exciting for ALL of us to watch. And I'm 100% certain we all want to see it hit big numbers... because that lifts all of our spirits. It validates what we're doing. So best of luck to a guy I like to call my friend - with his iconic sale.

Well said Greg.

The positive that will come out of this Charlie is that you may be losing The Mule, but you have thousands of your bestest lat-g buddies (who btw you like so much), and we will be here for you in your time of loss.

I would imagine that owning a car like that, or the 1969 ZL1 Corvette, or any number of historic, rare, sought after cars makes you more of a temporary care-taker than anything else. There are classic cars I lust after but would never want to own simply because I would kill the value by driving them like they were meant to be driven.
A car like this should be driven and if Charlie can recognize he won't be giving it the exercise it deserves, well, that shows what a stand-up kind of guy he is.
Good luck, Charlie, I'll be glued to the TV!
The Mule is a car that will probably go to an enthusiastic buyer who knows what it is and will be very happy to own it... I think that alone should erase any seller's remorse.

Good post but I just want to comment on this bit ^
I don't agree that driving it is ruining it. You could run it up to 100k miles and keep it in near perfect condition. Would it depreciate due to the mileage? Surely, but much less than say a new Benz.

Mule is headed to Scottsdale. I didn't think I would get this depressed.
I'll miss this car. I sold it to Charley 10 years ago, but he has always allowed me to still play with it. So I knew it was in good hands and I could go see it anytime. Charley has taken great care of it and understood that it was a hot rod and sometimes cars break. Charley and I have grown into good friends over the years and I really appreciate that he has always taken great care of all my old cars. I hope the new owner understands the history of this car and takes care of it as well as Charley did.
I’m bummed I can't see it sold at Barrett Jackson but I just don’t have time to go. I’m too slammed building the new 2014i Z/28. I have been very fortunate to be able to keep building cars at work and at home and keep learning and growing. When I get a chance to drive an old project, like the Mule I always have a ton of memories. It was an odd feeling two years ago when I fired up Mayhem for the maiden voyage. It was like all the previous cars but different. I could access a file in my head and just build on that.
I wish Charley the best on selling the Mule. The other cars have the Mules DNA in them so the Mule will never be totally gone.

Not to take away from the intense sentiment of the conversation, but Mark where does the i in the 2014i Z28 come from. In progress?
I think that the new Z28 is one of the coolest things GM has decided to do in a long time, aside from continuing to improve on the Corvette platforms. I just really hope that you guys get the sales numbers that you need because I think that your target demographic is very limited. I would love to be able to buy one but I am just not able to. The Z/28 is basically what most of the guys on this site are striving to build, but in a modern version. It's an incredibly cool project and I hope you are very proud of it.
Charley as I said a while back good luck with the sale. I know that I don't know you personally but I appreciate what you do for the car community. Very few guys would allow someone to still be involved with a project that they sold to someone else, even if that someone was Mark Stielow. I hope you keep collecting because you have quite a cool group of cars and they are in good hands. Good luck.

I was sitting front row a couple years ago -- and wanted a nice '67 Vette that seemed to be stalled out at the right price -- so I put a bid in... Then another bidder jumped in -- I looked around and it's Hendrick sitting about 4 chairs away ... I quit bidding... you're not going to buy something that he wants. LOL
Don't know if you guys know this --- but the chairs are filled with the guys that spend the most money --- Ron Pratt is the center of the known universe -- his chairs are the very front row -- center.... the guys to the right and left have (over time) spent less - either as buyers or sellers... and rows back are less and so on. You can't even get into the area where the big boys sit -- The first 5 or 6 rows are roped off and guarded and their name is on the chair(s).
My neighbor has 4 chairs -- front row about 10 from the center... THUS I WAS ALLOWED TO SIT THERE... Pretty nice!

It was very drivable but if I were to do another car it would be another LS with the Eaton style supercharger like Jackass or Mayhem. Less weight and more useable power. The Mule had I think 9-1 compression. Unless you have your foot in it making boost you are driving a 9-1 compression car. It is really easy to drive but you don't have the part throttle zippiness like you do with the supercharged engine. I debated replacing the TT engine with a LS9 but didn't have the heart to do it and I really only need one car like this to drive. After a couple days of reflection I feel pretty good about the sales price considering it is a 11 year old car. The Mule didn't have the latest greatest interior, billet pieces etc but it also didn't have the latest trend pieces back when it was built. If it would have been built with the trendy pieces that were popular back then I don't think it would have brought the money. I think those Fikse wheels are still my favorite wheels.

Congrats on the sale Charlie. The Mule was a great inspiration to build Darkside and I agree with you, the Fikse wheels fit the look of the 69 Camaro very well; bit of a retro look, but with the refinement of a billet wheel.

Still disappointed the G-Force Cuda kind of disappeared. When it was being built the stories were all full of "we're gonna run it" and as far as I know it only participated in one 0-200-0 contest.
There was a few issues with that car (ever check out the floor near the gas pedal ?) and it must have been ungodly loud for any cruising, but I still have the centerfold spread on my shop wall. Such an awesome design with a lot of new and innovative touches especially at the time. That car probably moved me as much as anything I'd seen before or since. Usually when a car is chopped and stretched that much, especially an icon, the end result is not as envisioned, but that is one car that actually looked better than its rendering.

I'm guessing Charley would never even hint at what he paid for the Mule originally...... :EmoteClueless:

You're absolutely right.
Neil Lea .at Rods&Restos actually designed the suspension layout for the C5 control arms... Alan did a hell of a build ! Seeing the car during build was impressive, shame it never attained the goals Bob set for the car,,,
Doug modified the cuda?
I would love to see pics. Sema 2003, maybe 2004, was a huge highlight for me! I looked at that Cuda for hours. Beautiful craftsmanship!

Too bad I didn't see this post before this morning -- I sat last night with Bob Johnson and Johnson's (different Johnson) Hot Rod shop... I would have asked them for you.

I love that they display the monthly payment. - - - I'm guessing the new buyer will not be going with the finance plan! :)

Maybe I missed it, but who said he modified anything? I read it that someone else set up the front suspension from the beginning of the build.

The Mule made a cameo appearance and got a mention in some Speedhunters coverage: http://www.speedhunters.com/2014/01/worlds-greatest-collector-car-auction/
