View Full Version : 914 track car???
There's a little guy with horns sitting on my should whispering "go find out if it's for sale and how much, because it could make a hell of a track car with an SBC in it, and it's your color."

$50 to take it off his hands......
And then scrap it. While you're at it I know where there's a Torino and a Chevy painted like a Ford that can go in the same pile...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
BTW -- the color is all wrong.... It must have been a COPO

I would. worst he can do is say no to a lowball offer!I worked at a Porsche dealer in '76, drove an auto-x prepped 2.0 once and was hooked on these little go karts, SBC power = track day entertainment.

Somehow I knew you'd be a cheerleader for the concept. :D

I've followed this intently from the beginning, I also have a buddy in Portland that's had a similar car for 5+ years. He noted they are an absolute riot but with the price of Hoosier's they aren't exactly cheap to feed! :D

They are such a go kart! Has there been a production car with a lower butt to ground dimension?
They were no slouch with a built 2180 motor back in the day.....but anything with a reliable 250-300 hp would be good fun!

Only if the poster child car is a Prius!

I've seen that Matt, very impressive build but it's probably higher maintenance than a Top-10 Supermodel. :D

Good looking car, I'd like to see the underside. :secret: I know a lot of guys run Subaru motors in off-road buggies and sand rails due to hp/wgt/$ ratio. The CG of a mid-engine flat motor can't be a bad thing! The availability and cost of Subaru performance parts vs Porsche is also very appealing.

I would think the two (suby vs porsche/vw engine) would be very close and the limitations being adapting the power at the transfer to the tranny?
How close are the vw's and the suby's boxer's geometrically?

Renegade in Las Vegas makes full kits for the Suby stuff too. I have to admit, if you are looking for 300-ish HP then I would do a turbo'd Suby combo as it would be lighter weight and lower cg. Because, as you noted, the buggy guys have been using those engines for awhile, the adapters to mate up to Porsche boxes, or aftermarket transaxles that follow the Porsche pattern, are easy to get.
If you want 450 HP or more, then definitely go V8; less high-strung to make that kind of power. Handling and rigidity will become a serious issue tho' with stock 914 stuff and hence why my car ended up tube frame and dual A :D Adapting late model 997 susp front and rear was another idea I had that likely would have worked well (easier as it keeps the strut front end). Even so, after a lot of tuning, if you watch my vids behind the wheel, I looked more like a NASCAR guy at 200mph than a Porsche guy at 130mph :unibrow: While crazy fast, it was a handful to keep pointed forward at times.
Still, pucker factor and all, it is an absolute blast to have that kind of HP to weight ratio that can also make turns...
Tim - One 914 fun factor that I feel is worth mention is the a$$ to tarmac measurement. Short of a Kart, can you name a production car that has a number less than the 914? :D

Tim - One 914 fun factor that I feel is worth mention is the a$$ to tarmac measurement. Short of a Kart, can you name a production car that has a number less than the 914? :Dwell there is that measurement as well, I am trying to think of another car that is either that low at a factory height, or "feels" that low. I bet my 2011 Z06 is near to having my butt as close to the road as the 914 (but your $20K rule knocks that out of the conversation) if I busted out a tape measure between it and a stock 914, but when you are in a 914, I agree, you feel like you might hit the ground at pretty much any point in time
Not sure if describing the feel of driving a 914 is like a dog with worms strikes any desire for others to find out what that is like, but that is pretty much the best visual I can give when you sit in the seat. Legs straight out, butt on the ground, and sliding right along
You would have to get an image like this one with your dog - I immediately think of "Death" when a small car and large dog is up for discussion.

That's a decent sized Dane and a really chopped bug! Tuckers head when sitting is around 41-42"
Nice visual on the dog with worms. :D

A friend of mine is converting a 914 to use a Subaru engine and I'm currently working on a way to convert an STI transmission to a transaxle (getting rid of the rear output).

I've always wanted to lengthen and widebody/tube chassis V8 one of these.
But then, I kind of want to do that to every car.
For a few weeks I even seriously thought about using the mid-section of a Geo Storm as the cockpit of a mid-engine car. Anyone who has built scratch cars knows that by far the hardest/least rewarding part is windows/doors/seals.

The Subaru Option is better than a SBC - it fits better & has a Lower Center of Gravity.
