heat and cooling suggestions for garage

Guys, I need some suggestions been searching but still confused. I have a 750 sq ft shop with a 12 foot ceiling and need to heat and cool it. Its in the charlotte area of NC. More emphasis on cooling I guess. What type of system/brand/size will cover this space. I will have natural gas service and plan on doing a 100amp sub panel. Really didn't want to spend a boat load but need something adequate. Any suggestions?

There are several factors to use in your calculation such as insulation in the walls, insulation in the ceiling, the number of windows, are the double pane style? and last are your doors insulated. I have a 1260 sq. ft. garage, my walls have dense blown in insulation in the walls no insulation in the ceiling but it is completely decked in the attic, doors are insulated and I have two medium size windows single pane. I have been using a 25000 BTU wall mounted slide in style AC unit that I bought at Sams Club. The best test was last summer when it was 105 degrees outside and a comfy 73 degrees in the shop. Down here in the Houston area we don't have a lot of really cold days so I get by with a heat lamp and a couple of small electric space heaters. It's not central air, but it works great for me. :)

Best thing to do is to find a good HVAC professional in your area. They should be able to quickly let you know what you will need for your area.

I'm in DFW with a 2000 sq ft shop with 12' eaves and a 16' peak on the inside. 2x6 walls, insulated doors, solar board, fully drywalled and insulated inside, etc.. I've got a 5 ton Trane HVAC unit with gas furnace and it easily holds whatever temp I put it at- hot or cold without issue.

Every situation is going to be different depending on your situation which is why a local professional can give you the best info.

You need a mini-split system. It's perfect for garage heating and cooling, and only needs a 20A circuit.

Yep. It keeps my 800 sq. foot shop (12 foot ceilings) at 73* year-round.

Here in FL, the A/C part is more important, but it does fine on our occasional low-50s days too.

I have a 2-car garage in Albemarle, NC (about an hour NE of Charlotte). My advice would be to spend your $'s on insulation and sealing it up and you won't need much heating or cooling to be comfy. I heat my garage with a 1500 watt floor heater from Walmart or Target. I cool it with a window air conditioning unit. Just be sure walls and ceiling are insulated. Insulated doors would be nice but I don't have that yet.
