Hi Guys I'm going in for a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy on Thursday. They cut your stomach in the shape of a banana to hold about 4oz of food . At 58 all the damage I've done over the years is coming back to haunt me. It wasn't bad while I was working but not moving around for ten hours a day like I used to, I guess I'm getting rusty. Two hip replacements the electrical problem with my heart and arthritis all over my body I could deal with. But in May I had my blood checked and my readings for the first time were in the high range of 180. I've always pushed my luck with the diabetes that's in my family . Now it came around and bit me in the Butt ! My mother had it, my daughter got it when she was 15, and My oldest brother Died at 56 from complications of diabetes. He went in the hospital in February and passed away on Dec.9th after loosing his left leg on my birthday. When he got really bad he would beg me to take him out of there so he could see his dream house one more time. ( A house on 5 wooded acres he loved horses) He only had it for three years before he died.
I'm no hero but I never thought it would get me ( sort of above the law kind of deal. ) I don't ever want my daughters to hear me ask for something like that and have to live with the fact you could do noting for not only my brother but my best friend, land lord, fishing partner. Thank God I still have my other brother who I'm just as close with.
So I go in Thursday and will be out either Friday or early Saturday. I start my new adventure, They call it a journey. With the weight loss I hope to, as my buddy tells me, be around to drive my Car at least once.
In May I got up to 308lbs and I'm only 5'7". That was a shock Now I'm down to 286. Boy that was hard to type, I never told anyone my weight before.
Well that's enough rambling for now.

Our neighbor had that surgery, best thing she ever did for herself. She dropped a lot of weight and is much more active and healthy now. I wish you well Wayne.

Wayne good luck. My wife had Gastrec Bypass about 2 years ago, and she has never felt better. She had tons of energy. It still is a struggle to keep it off. A few people we know have had it, and a year later they have put the weight back on. You will have fun on your journey.

Wayne,
Sorry to learn of your health issues.
Not sure if this new music vid/commercial of Mrs. Tom Brady will help or hurt your recovery...lol

You need to commit to changing past eating habits in respect to volume. When you start to feel slightly full QUIT eating. I changed from eating 3 traditional meals and way too much volume, especially lunch and dinner, to eating good "snacks" throughout the entire day, just enough volume to never have that "I'm starving feeling." I shrunk my stomach substantially in the last five years and I do not miss leaving a restaurant feeling beyond uncomfortable.
Wish you the best of success!

Good Luck.. many people have said its the best thing they have ever done for themselves...
Going to need new clothing..recommendation... DON'T buy new until you hit a plateau.. one that hangs out for a few months.. you will likley drop alot of size once the post surgery water and swelling go down...
Go to goodwill in nice neighborhoods....
Trust me and you will be fine!

Wayne, I once had a great coach/friend tell me... if you don't believe in yourself no one else will. You can do it, it's a mindset..:gitrdun:

Thanks everyone.
Oh and Skip; looking like she does, she can sing any way she wants!
Since the end of July I've lost 22lbs. when I went to Florida for ten days, I went to the gym with my sister in law. Each time I did 45 minutes at 3 mph with an incline of 3% on the tread mill. I lost 8lbs in ten days . No snacking or large meals. The only splurge was Texas Road House for an 11oz steak with green beans. I'm like someone with an alcohol problem. I do good for a while and next year or so I would crash and burn!
The hardest part of this was a admitting I needed help.

Good luck Wayne, let me tell you, you don't want diabetes!!! My mom does three day a week on dialysis from stage 4 kidney disease! She's only 68!!
Three of my dads brothers have it as well as my dad!!
So you can imagine the look on my face Dec 31, 2011 when my doctor said yup 270 blood sugar reading after fasting from the night before! Yup I have diabetes and I'm was only 42 at the time.
It's you vs you and no one else!!!
My best friend did the gastro over a year ago he was well into the 350/360 range. He's now just under 240!!!! Complete life change that's for sure.

Good to hear buddy! Glad all is well.
Wayne, one goofy little trick that worked for me was I got rid of my go-to plates and bowls and started using smaller ones. Still get to fill the plate and bowl but while the portion is less the visual is a full serving. Goofy maybe but psychologically it worked.......for me.

Must have worked really well for ya Sieg - 'cause you're so skinny you'd fall thru the cracks in a sidewalk.
One thing I used to do --- because we all get hungry for the foods we like not the diet crap! Cook whatever -- but! Let's say you want a steak and baked potato..... you make it --- and cut it in half --- everything -- just cut it all in half -- that way you're eating your "comfort food" --- but taking in half the calories. The trick is not to cheat!
OH -- and you can't have half a bowl of ice cream -- so just fugedidaboudit.
Good points GW, you can still eat all the things you love, just reduce the portions and savor the bites........chew them to infinity. :D
Cold turkey don't cut it...........and why would you want too? Life is too short. Just remember too much of a good thing is bad.

The other "rule" I really try to watch --- "No white at night" --- which rules out that baked potato we talked about -- but mostly in my household ruled out PASTA...
We've also tried to stick to a gluten free diet... Just doing that dropped 10 pounds off my fat ass... and doing nothing else other than that. It's taken a lot more work to go gluten free because some of the stuff just tastes like crap -- but like anything else - if you work at it - eventually you find stuff that suits you. I just feel better dipping a gluten free cracker into my guacamole!

Glad to hear you are doing well. Portion control is important but improved nutritional intake is the key to your lifestyle change. It's much easier to fill yourself on the right foods and feel satisfied vs. eating less of high calorie foods and fighting yourself. Start educating yourself on nutrition as diet can prevent diabetes and reverse your course.
I constantly hear that eating healthy doesn't taste good. It's just simply not true if you allow your body and pallet time to change. Finding the healthy foods you like and learning to prepare them is also crucial.
Treat it like a study for the best lifestyle you can muster. Nutrition has made a profound difference in my life. I'm rooting for you.....

Thanks everyone! I'm not too worried about eating too much right now I can only take in about 2-21/2oz protein. I'm more worried about getting enough protein and fluids. 60-80 grs protein and at least 64oz of liquids. Its tuff to even fit that in there. 54lbs so far. Trying not to loose too much muscle mass but its real tuff. Walking 2-1/2 miles a day. Still not allowed to lift, push or pull anything yet.
Good for you Wayne!
