I appreciate you guys and gals following us on the Whipple build. We had a lot of fun with the Whipple and learned a lot of things. In all, over 750,000 views were logged against the Whipple build through several of the top sites. For five years now we have dealt with the Whipple and watched our build go from a one of a kind to seeing the COPO Camaro 4.0 Liter Upgrade using much of the same things we discovered, though to a much better result. I'd have to declare the Whipple a success. We decided to go a different direction after many hours of discussions with Mike@Whipple and Brent@CBM. Both of those guys helped us many ways over the years to overcome problems and come to solutions. The result is if/when I buy a Camaro, the 4.0 liter Whipple, 170mm TB and Crusher intake will be my choice.

For now, we wanted to go a different route. SNL Performance has long been heavily engaged in Turbocharged applications and we really wanted to apply the same level of effort to a Twin Turbo Setup with as much passion as we put the Whipple package together. Steve Addison of SNL had studied the twin turbo applications found in some of the rear mount technology and the APS kits. Over the years we have helped customers with Twin Turbos replace kit designs with larger turbos, we've ported Turbos and accomplished a dozen other tweaks. In many cases constraints in the customer goals limited the outcomes. On this build Steve made a special effort to understand my goals and then set out to have my fabrication done in a manner that is consistently high in quality and easily repeatable.

We chose to fabricate the installation so that it fit the existing 2004 GTO (Ethyl). We did not want to spend a large amount of time moving brake lines and electrical fuze boxes. If you are looking for exotic and innovative ways to tuck the ABS, we were not interested in solving the problem so you won't see it emerge here. My goals are somewhat more modest than with the Whipple. I am looking for a solid performing car in the 800 rwhp range with improved reliability and that we do not have to accomplish custom fabrication for the core system components beyond the initial Turbo build.

Steve chose the Precision units that have really had a positive reliability and quality reputation in the Honda and Supra world. After several communications with Aaron at Precision we settled on two options, twin 6266 or twin 6766. I chose the 6266 giving up potential growth for a better spool. The units have a 0.81 AR with a T4 flange.

Before we could get to the good stuff we had some cleanup to do with Ethyl.

First, the Mosier pumpkin with the Wavetrac 35 spline Diff could not handle the power the Whipple made. On the fourth 60% throttle pass the Wavetrac disintegrated. There were less than 1000 miles on the unit. At our power level, Mosier/Wavetrac agreed to fix the rear end one time but advised my they could not continue the lifetime warranty. After a very amiable conversation with a gracious representative from Mosier we opted to get our money back on the Wavetrac.

Chris Nichols at GForce Engineering recommended we try a Strange S-Trac. I had considered a spool which I had run successfully at this power level on the OEM differential. However, I broke an LCA while running the spool and prefer not to use one with the IRS. If the S-Trac cannot hold I am going to an SRA.

Next, the battery relocate done when the Whipple was on the car was my first and it was not well done. SNL has taken a couple of weeks to sort out the wiring problems we encountered as we began to bolt the Twins up. We stopped the install on the Twins and went through the entire car rerouting, wrapping, and reconnecting the wiring.

We also pulled the Nitrous kit. That may have been a mistake but for now we are just going to see what the Twins can do. I know where Waco is if I need to reinstall it.

In addition to the above, one of the driving factors on the twins was to have a hood back on the car. So I have bought my eighth hood and it is waiting patiently to be installed.

Most of the Fabrication and patch up work is done. We expect to start tuning next week. Here are a few teaser pictures of the car with the mockups and in some cases, the final fabrication, in place.

After less than 1000 miles and 4 passes at 60% throttle the Wavetrac unit took a *** on me. At 900+ rwhp and 1110 ft lbs of torque and since I am using a trans brake, the lifetime warranty was only a one time fix warranty. It was a great unit I would highly recommend to anyone running less than 600 whp and no trans brake but I only bought it for the warranty, never considering it might not be able to hold up. We've replaced it with a strange S-Trac and I am looking forward to see how that is going to work.
Got the rebuilt 9 inch back with the Strange S-Track Differential

That'll be a lot of fun. I had an APS twin kit on my 05 GTO with a built motor. Nowhere near the level of your build, but a heck of a ride.

There is at least one APS with 800+ right now. We upgraded the turbos on some of those kits. I am hoping for a little less time fabricating and a little more time getting in trouble :)

My kit came with the larger GT3072's instead of the 28's. Still pretty small for a 402 LS2.

:king:
I bow to you sirAs I get older the insanity seems to spread. Maybe its my memory going away. :) I will be actually stepping down about 150 rwhp and about 300 foot pounds of torque with this setup. Problem was wavetrac couldn't handle the power and wouldn't honor the warranty more than once. I decided on this config for two reasons. First, everytime I had a problem I wound up having to do custom fab work on things to fit the Whipple. Second, I am hoping this lower power setup will be less stress on the driveline and give me more opportunity to have fun.

Most of what you are hearing about Turbo power is coming from people with experience putting them on Hondas and Supras as singles. They multiply those reports times 2 and assume 1000 hp which I haven't seen anyone make with this size turbo on a v8. I saw one LSX 427 making 850 ish but that is the highest HP app I've seen short of 78mm/88mm or larger turbos which would have required major reconstruction of the car once cut up to fit..

I honestly am looking for a pre 74 roller to ditch the GTO and put the good stuff into. JMHO

Buttoned the engine back up today. Starting to find small things displaced over time, minor delays, yet irritating. For instance we sat on the fuel rails for three months before discovering the wrong thing was sent.

That includes a two step, boost controller, new stall, driver's side turbo, screws on the wheels for the slicks, and new front runners. We are hoping to get a GForce1320 modified cradle and solid bushings installed. Lot's of progress being made and hopefully we can get it together before the tracks shut down for the seasn.

So we are having trouble on the dyno. The car seems to be pushing through the convertor. We realized the transmission was not set up for the heat of the turbo so we went to Sullivan Motorsports in Dallas for some help. Nate opened up the fluid path to the convertor, and smoothed out a few wear and tear areas. We tested the tranny and convertor on his tranny dyno and it stalled correctly. Got the tranny back in the car at the shop and start tuning tomorrow.

Tuner has a full plate, needs to set up the boost controller, fuel controller, add the bosst a pump, then adjust to the convertor. We are going to give the current convertor one more shot to see if the tweaks fixed the problem, then we have picked up some contact information from a sponsor on here that we will call

Well we took her out on the road today and got the same results we had on the dyno. top speed was 112. Hit that at 6300 and climbed to 6900 and that is all we could do.

Is this a tranny issue exclusively? If so, are you looking at going manual? I was thinking you ran a manual transmission on your previous set ups?

wrp
11-10-2013, 05:30 PM
We tried the manual with an RPM built T56. They failed miserably which led me to the TH400 from a different vendor I have now. Nothing wrong with the transmission at all. It is a convertor issue. You can compute the slip at nearly 40% @ 6300. MPH doesn't rise between 6300 and 6900. I have a local guy who has been very successful and has agreed to help us get the stall right. Otherwise I am looking hard at Twist and a couple of others.

wrp
11-15-2013, 06:52 PM
So we've concluded that the 245 mm Convertor just cannot pump enough fluid to work right with the weight and power we are running. We are building a 265 mm Convertor right now. The guy that is building the convertor is going to try a design he has developed himself that will involve a custom built steel stator with different angles than are normally found. I guess we will see soon.

Got a new converter in from a local shop, guy nailed it on the first try. Back to they dyno to dial in the toys and busted the FAST 102 at 27lbs boost. Sending it back for them to look at it.

Well we split three runners, didn't really blow it apart. FAST is a great organization to deal with. I would like to keep the FAST with a 102mm TB as opposed to a 78 mm with the LS1 TB.

So was this an isolated incident, or will this happen again with a new unit?
I've always wandered what kind of boost pressure the FAST intakes would handle. Do you anticipate having to go with an aluminum intake?
Is FAST going to replace this under warranty?

Is FAST going to replace this under warranty? They advertise to 60 lbs I think. The guys at fast said that it should not have had a problem at 27 lbs. I am thinking I may end up with an aluminum intake just so I can maintain the 102mm TB. The LS6 we have on there is pretty robust but only has a 78 mm TB. On the warranty they are going to look at it and I have no reason to believe they won't replace the runners.

We are enroute to an LSX block. Going to up the Ci to 427, using same crankshaft and rods from the 408.

Fwiw I don't think it would be a problem for you to run that. I've ran a 408 with twin 66's to 1150rwhp with an LS6 intake and 78mm throttle body and that power was right in line with other combinations we did with larger throttle bodies and intake manifolds.

Not saying the fast intake and bigger throttle body wouldn't help at -all-, just that I don't think it would be a huge difference.

Thanks guys. I am wondering the merit of selling the fast and 102mm TB and going to an aluminum intake.

LSx block gets in tomorrow. Going to use the Eagle Crank and Rods I have in the 408 and add 4.125 Pistons bringing her out to 427 Ci. More importantly, the LSx will have the 6 bolt heads vice the 4 bolt heads the current LQ9 has. This will allow us to boost in the 25-30 psi range more consistently without lifting the heads.

So say goodbye 408

Not as obvious here as when you look at it but the reluctor wheel (2 of them) have different gaps around the circumference. The wheel is loose in areas, you can tell the two pieces that had been fitted together have become unattached in areas making the assembly sort of wobbly. we'd sort of been all over the board on what the problem might be. Initially thought perhaps a burned piston. Leakdown was indecisive so we theorized that a head was lifting at higher boost. We knew we would not be sure until we had it down. Good news is that the crank, rods, pistons, and LQ9 block are in good shape. The walls are not scuffed or damaged, pistons look okay and the rods show no sign of contacting anything. Probably good thing we pulled it down when we did.

She's alive. Got to driver her a short bit yesterday. Street tune only. We are going to get a few heat cycles on her before we get into any serious stuff. Took her to Sullivan's to have the transmission gone through again. Tranny had a leak so we will fix that then set her up. AFter that Steve is going to finish the boost controller. I still have to pin the hood and the Corbeau Forza seats are due in next week.We are going to take it easy onmher this summer and wait for cool weather to see what she will do. Video is somewhat boring but you can see the difference between the initial startup and the tune James put on her. Car is remarkably docile for a 1200+ rwhp car.

Got a little deeper into the transmission than I had hoped to today. Nate at Sullivan's pulled it. The Torque converter I put into it was not sized right and we had beat up the pump pretty bad. We'd been keeping an eye out on the front aluminum hub for a couple of years now and we've decided to put it back to an iron piece. Little speed bump in the highway to hell but we are still headed home with this thing.

Right now guessing the pads on the converter were too thick and pressed the converter too hard against the input shaft wrecking the pump. Converter has had some metal in it, debating on having it gone through.

http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Transmission/Transmission-106-640_zpsdd33b19d.jpg

Alumninum hub in the iupper left is probably a good drag racer only idea but for street uses we figure an iron piece will be more durable.

http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Transmission/Transmission-105-640_zps723177e2.jpg

We didn't have enough hours on the tranny to put any burn on the clutches.

View down inside the open Transmission

http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Transmission/Transmission-102-640_zpsbbd773fb.jpg

My theory is that the converter pressure on the input shaft might have also resulted in pressure back up into the crank, fouling the reluctor wheel and taking out my LQ9...Just a theory.

Well SNL has really worked their asses off to get the car back together. I'd say the wiring is close to 75% done. Most of the damage was local to the harness on the passenger side though we lost a lot of connectors. Melted the Line Loc and ruined the two step wiring Getting it back together. They also took the time to clean off all the suppressant. Between the fire and the power washing, the engine bay has never looked better. Here is a mixture of damage and repair shots.

I was wondering the other day where you've been. Can you elaborate on the fire source?

wrp
11-14-2014, 12:53 PM
We've redone the wiring several times. I wrestled wit a cam position sensor code for about two weeks then rewired that part. Took the car on a 60 mile trip. Had a lot of theories on the source of the fire ranging from Alcohol fire to the TH400. At the end of the day it seems I had a short in a wire that set the insulation on fire. The fire burned for a while and eventually compromised the integrity of the fuel line. The fuel boiled and then vaporized filling the engine compartment, that caused the explosion. The fire seems to also have been fed by a leaking Transmission seal. Damage was mostly to connectors and the wiring insulation/sheaths.

Thanks David, we've stepped back to work on the suspension and look over the safety issues. At a minimum we will be upgrading to a cage. We've already done some revisions to the suspension. One thing I have noticed looking over the videos, one run netted a 1.55 60'. The car lurched right, out of the groove when the boost came on, a little over 1 second into the run. Reviewing the film, I believe the front wheels came off the ground as the car pushed right. On the 9.2 pass the car was clearly lifting as it passed the 330 foot mark and you can see it squatting well past the 1/8 mile. It is in short, a beast. Here are the vids of the busted pass. I have no really passion about whether the wheels lifted or not, just an observation. I based it on the frame by frame where there first is a shadow from the wheel, then there isn't, then there is.

Man, when you said that there was a lot of suspension modifications needed, I was hoping for front and rear short/long arm, true coilover, high travel/low roll, 315's all around road racing suspension.

So is this beast going to be a drag queen only? You know that you can set it up for road racing and it can still drive straight, too, right?

I'm impressed, either way. That car is a freaking machine.

Thanks, I have a cousin that used to road race factory cars for BMW. Right now he is a HPDE instructor. He put a proud picture of himself and his beautiful new TT Porsche 964 up on facebook. I asked him why would anyone try to turn a car going fast :) He seemed upset with me. I must admit there may be a 4L80 and 3.08 rear gear with an appropriate converter in the car's future for a mile and/or half mile pass, just to try to get in the 200 mph club. I say drag queen only but I do drive around on the streets quite a bit and am not shy about not letting someone cut me off at the on ramp to the freeway, ;)

My only real concern is whether the solid aluminum bushings will make the car unstreetable/unforgiving on rough roads. For now, if you pull up by a QSM 04 GTO in Texas, you still prolly need to wonder if it is Ethyl :) We are working on a stock 04 hood. I have to confess 315s all around and an open track day at the Texas Motor Speedway would be a hoot.

So there have been times in the last 10 years I actually thought we would get Ethyl together and start driving the piss out of her. During those times I entertain myself with ideas of things I would like to do. One thing I have been working on for a couple of years is a more business like and functional console that accommodates the reverse manual shift pattern of the TH400. I do not or am not able to drink anything in the car, mostly because of the 250 lbs springs on the coil overs which require a mouthpiece when driving on Texas concrete roads. So right off the bat the cup holders had to go. Got rid of them a few years ago but the console lacked the functionality I wanted. Even the nice looking M6 shift boots really bug me since you cannot tell what the transmission is doing in a glance. So I got hold of Brian Kilduff and picked up once of his fantastic Lighting Rod shifters. I thought the multi-lever shifter was cool, because "race car."

http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Shifter-5-640_zpsgk5geuvu.jpg

The unit is as solid as a piece of construction gear. I swear you would expect a D8 Caterpillar shifter to be this strong. The unit was mainly made to stand alone though Brian does sell consoles. He doesn't provide anything that can be sculpted into the existing console lines, his consoles are just folded aluminum tunnels. I like the unpolished aluminum look but after fires and all the horse**** we've come through I didn't have the heart or coin to ask Steve to make it work. So I just started the project myself. I had already been working on the console looking for ideas on electronics, switches, and so forth. In early versions I tried to use ABS Plastic to form a replacement for the shift boot.

http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Console-48-640_zps33d21d75.jpg

Right away the window switches were a problem. The switch box is huge under the console. I would have loved to have scrapped the OEM Switches and put my own in..

http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/58b616a9-238f-464c-8514-dbacd07ea634_zpsamafb8gp.jpg

At one point the panel hosted the fire suppression handles as well as the electronics.

http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Console-32-640.jpg

Unable to overcome the switches, the earlier versions envisioned a quick release panel that the new switches would be put in (Transbrake and Lineloc). This way they would be accessible with the 1/4 turn fastener. That was used early on and eventually the carbon fiber replacement for the cup holders came to host the Leash Boost Control Display.

http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/BnMShifterInstallJPG-14-640_zpsf2cd893d.jpg

So I picked up the Kilduff and started trying to figure how to integrate it since it wasn't an easy swap. In one version I built my own sheetmetal console,

http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Console-90-640_zpsb9aomgxl.jpg

Wrestling with the Kilduff and fabricating the necessary components was sort of fun. I sure wish I could lay fiberglass or carbon fiber.

Eventually I have decided I have to cut the OEM Console. Didn't want to do it but didn't cut enough to hurt the structural integrity of it. First I mocked up the base cover with cardboard and fitted it so the console trim piece would still snap in. One of th3e difficult things about that trim piece is that they seem to have designed it so nothing else would work with it, lots of curves. I just straightened them out some.

http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Console-104-640_zpsfbqudcaa.jpg

http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Console-105-640_zpsgn0onj8h.jpg

Eventually I even cut the center trim brace on the trim piece.

http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t327/wrpnEthyl/Mods/Turbo%20Whistle/Console/Console-108-640_zpsoid8hi6l.jpg

Fitment seems pretty good and gear shifter travel seems to be okay. Ther is adequate room to mount the electronics behind the shifter, including the Leash Boost control window which I am really considering moving above the Radio or in the hole the radio will leave. I am using aluminum as the base. Haven't decided on the thickness but will probably have it as thick as I can and still snap the console trim back in place.

Moving forward I will decide what to make the final console plate from and probably have a good CNC shop to etch/engrave the appropriate markings on the unit. I intend to have the engraving go completely through the face so I can have lights under the console that will serve to be read better in the dark.

Thanks John, I certainly enjoyed meeting you and talking with you. I am very sorry we did not have the time to get in the shop and maybe to the track. On the other hand perhaps we can at some point in the future. I am wrestling with two options on the shifter. One is the exposed plate as I have shown and ther would be a modified variant. The good news is I can put anything I want on it as long as I can get it drawn. This is the direction I am going but I have a variant with a smooth polished plate covering the entire surface.

I've seen those shifters for years but could never figure out how they work? During a normal run do you shift using all three levers? If so, why does the smallest lever allow all 3 gears to be selected?

wrp
06-04-2015, 10:22 AM
The smaller gear is just like a normal automatic shifter with standard gear selectors. If for instance I did not have a reverse manual valve body, I could put the snall lever in 3rd and let the automatic transmission shift itself (for instance they make 4 speed models as well). On the other hand, when I put the small shifter in 1st, it cocks, or arms the two other shifters, ie 1-2 and 2-3 rods. Cocked or armed means they are in the forward position. the 1-2 will shift from 1 to 2 when pulled back one click (which is all it will travel). At that point the transmission is in 2nd. Pulling the 2-3 lever shifts it to third, and down shifting is opposite. The example here is with a standard valve body not reverse manual.

So we are going back together now. Chris at GForce has upgraded my axles to the newer Outlaw axles with the billet cv's and stubs since we have been running his original stubs and axles for nearly 5 years now without issue. We sent the Pumpkin to Strange and had them go through and refresh the S-Trac. It was one of the original S-Tracs they sold and there was some wear on some of the washers. Since the unit has a lifetime warranty they upgraded it free of charge. While they had it all apart I went ahead and put a 3.25 gear in it. Brand new gear cost $189 with $100 of labor to install it (this is the reason I went with the 9 inch).

Picked up Kit 075 from Bill Ondo in Portage Indiana last Friday. I had noticed the kit for sale on this forum while studying and planning to purchase a new kit. Bill's work caught my eye as he has fabricated some first class alternatives to standard installs. Things that particularly impressed me were mods he made to the fuel line, installing an external fuel pump, his own fabrication of the hydraulic clutch system and several other detailed items that I felt made this kit special.

Challenge now is to make it mine. Bill recommended we go back to the start and go through it item by item and I think we will follow his advice. We got the car to the shop Sunday and have off loaded it now. We are starting an inventory of all parts on or off of the car. There is no proper way to start this thread without a shout out to Bill and his lovely wife Karin. They were gracious and helpful. It is a real pleasure to take this kit and build it following in his footsteps. Bill was also quite clear that I should put a lot of my own self into the build, and I intend to. I am not by myself on this one either.

My team consists of my wife who worked with me to determine what I was looking for and the encouragement to go out for kit 075 in lieu of a new kit from the factory. The rest of the team consists of the guys at SNL Performance in Haslett Texas, including Steve and Loyd the owners, January, Jacob, Brian, and Daniel the SNL staff. James Karger LSTuner, will ultimately get involved down the road. Finally, it would be hard for anyone that didn't know us to appreciate Ethyl, who made a good deal of this possible. Ethyl was my first return to high performance cars in nearly35 years and the second GTO I owned.

In the same fashion people ask us if our 33's are kit cars, a lot of them also said Ethyl wasn't a real GTO. We built Ethyl over a 10 year period from a mild street performance ride that was comfortable for the morning commute, to a purpose built focused drag car that was knocking on the door for some impressive accomplishments. On the day Ethyl died she had a 434 Ci LSx motor with twin 6767 double ball bearing turbos making 1256 rwhp and 1504 rwtq on E85. That power was channeled through an FTi Stage 5 TH400 and a GForce1320 9" Ford IRS with a Mosier Pumpkin and Strange S-Trac Diff running 3.25 gears. On that day we were getting ready to go back to the track for our first sub 8 second passes. Loose gravel, skinny tires, and a Ford F350 towing a gooseneck trailer ended all that. Even so, the performance built and custom fabricated components off the car contributed heavily to this build we are starting now. Our initial intent was to put the Ford 9 inch, TH400 and LSx in a 33 but the new school motor would not let us run in the old Fuel Altered Classes so we decided to just enjoy the FFR 33 Ford build and have fun with the car.

So here was Ethyl on her best day
