Block Lightening?

has anyone done this? I thought about doing it to my 454 but didnt know the Con's on doing this. http://www.lsmeng.com/Block-Lightening.html

I would think up to 70 lbs off a bbc would be huge just dont know what would or could go wrong doing this.

I worked at a shop that built cup engines back in the mid 90's, and we were removing as much as 30 lbs from small block Chevys. I personally never witnessed any negatives, other than cost. It was triple this cost 20 years ago.
I'd ask for references, and then follow up on them, asking specific questions.
Aside from the weight loss, you end up with a super trick looking block.

Supposedly IA II aluminum Pontiac blocks are barely if any lighter than a stock block, a lot stronger though. So I've wondered how much weight could be shaved off.

^ aluminum blocks tend to move quite a bit in high hp applications, or so I was told when I looked into it. Further, most of the weight loss gains are seen in big blocks. I had this grand idea of doing it to an LSx 454 and was told I'd be lucky to see a 40 lb weight loss. Not worth it IMO, compared to just using a big bore aftermarket aluminum block like RHS (if you like going around corners)...:bur2:

This kind of stuff is "FUN" --- but is really only applicable to MAXIMUM EFFORT applications... where every ounce is counted and every half a nano of HP is required to win. For us? Take some driving lessons... it'll take WAY WAY more time off your laps/runs.... and be invaluable for years to come. :peepwall:

An iron BBC is around 775lbs with iron heads right?
