Hello guys

My car has been in the bodyshop for rust repairs and body work. The car was disassembled and the inner fenders and were repainted first and then were fitted in order to paint the car with all parts assembled.

I was disappointed when i realized that the paint has been chipped off when bolting the fenders and door hinges. Also, I noticed the same at the areas where the rear bumper brackets are bolted.

I was told that all the paint chips would be repainted again.

Is this normal when it comes to putting and bolting all the panels and stuff together or is it because of bad body preparation prior to painting?

Really appreciate your input guys

Well it's a loaded question. A couple of things to keep in mind.

How were the parts preped? We're they sand blasted to down to metal, or were they just sanded and repainted?

What paint products are they using, what I mean by that is are they using a paint system or primer from this company and sealer from over there and base coat from another, you get what I mean?

Another thing to ask is when they we're doing your car, how much primer did they leave on after sanding the primer down? If they left too much primer and did this several times you will have way to many mils of product on there and then yes the paint will fail when the pressure of the bolts is applied.

I could type out a book here, but if you want shoot me a pm and I can give you a call to get more details and understand better what happened?

Another thing that does come into play is the cost of the work they are doing? Are you paying for the car to be completely fitted before paint? If so then they should have never put the parts on to fit them after it was painted.

Is this a resto shop or is it a collision shop that does resto work? Commercially acceptable is not the same as a high end paint job. I do not know what kind of job you were looking for or to what level they are supposed to be taking the car to?

Lots of different things come into play here.

Rick I really appreciate your time and input in this matter. Actually they use Dupont products, and unfortunately the shops where I am from do not do strip to bare metal. They just sanded the panels and some minor areas to bare metal and shot the primer. They test fitted the parts before shooting the base coat and clear coat, inner areas were painted first like inner doors and trunk, and it is just a collision shop not a restoration shop

Unfortunately the type of paint jobs I see here in the States from the reputable shops in this forum is not available where I live

Honestly, I don't know and I'm hoping someone will step in and correct me if I am wrong. My thoughts would be that from the factory the paint doesn't crack, chip, or fall off from where they bolted the car together so why should it with a repaint that, especially compared to our old cars, should be of much better quality than the factory paint. It may be a matter of a difference in the type of paint or even how much was used in a particular area between factory and aftermarket though. Like I said, I don't know. I'd be having the same questions if I was you. Good luck!
