Allan Simenson died when he crashed ten minuets into the race. Things have gotten safer but LeMans is still a dangerous giant street course.
Should remind all of us to take safety into account when building our cars.
I believe the worst motor-sports tragedy of all time was at LeMans in 1955.

My god that is/was terrible.
close to 80 people died in that wreck. Truth is you never know when it will come no matter how much you prepare for it.
look how fast it happens.

That 1955 race caused Mercedes to pull out of motor sport for years, an absolute tragic accident.
I was watching live when Simonsen crashed, camera angles didn't capture the car getting loose, just the impact. It was a hard hit that seriously tweaked the chassis. The way the car snapped left off the paint almost looks like something broke.
Godspeed Allan.......

I also was watching it live and when I saw how slow they were moving I really became concerned.
Which leads me to my next topic I which just started a thread on. Since were talking here about safety and how quickly things can happen I figured I would bounce it here.
