View Full Version : 1973 Camaro "Project Pumpkin"

Ok so here's the build of what will always be know as Project Pumpkin :peepwall:
The car is a mostly solid 1973 Camaro, both front fenders lowers and three small spots in the trunk are the only rust on the car. Well that is until I strip it :confused59:
For those that don't know and just to :poke: the rest of the 2nd gen owners out there. This car would have been the first 2nd gen built by Mark Steilow sorry but that's not goning to happen now :snapout:
This is not a full on build take it apart and hope to finish it some day!! Nope this will be worked in stages, also this is being built on a budget, so not a lot of fancy new parts going in here.
Ok so here's the quick plan, some will change as I get into it I'm sure.
I will start with the drive train. It has a GM crate 350 with a 350 trans. For now the engine is going to be used, upgraded but still going with a SBC :drowninga:
The trans will be changed to a manual, trying to find a T56 6spd but we'll see?? Second round will be a ls2 6spd (already have a deal working on that).
Plans for the engine are new gaskets, fresh paint, new cam, headers, carb, and if I can find a deal on a pair of used aluminum heads that would be cool.
Rear end will get a freshing, posi, and maybe a gear change.
I will paint it and NOT orange maybe silver?? Cowl hood but with MAJOR work done to it as I hate how it looks like a ramp for a water skier :lmao: more on that later.
Suspension is still open, ideas? I'm not going to do anything with the front yet as I want to change out the whole sub frame but not sure when that will happen. DSE solid body bushings and DSE frame connectors. Not sure if it will get mini tubed or not as then the bigger wheels and more money come it play. Maybe phase 2 :bitchslap:
Rear will stay leafs for now but will change it to Ride Tech I think??
Interior will be mostly stock but freshened up new carpet and seats. Still thinking about seats suggestions??
The biggest part is the wheels, I really want to start there because as you all know shells can make or break how a car looks. I've got a few ideas so we'll see how that goes? Again suggestions?? Also looking at something used (budget budget budget).
So here's the starting point with the pictures.

Car looks great Rick. I know what its like trying to build on a budjet. Try and get what you want the first time around or you will be spending twice. Research what you want, put a plan down on paper, and then start collecting parts.

I agree w Gae. Make a plan and budget, get the car handling and stopping first. Marty has a pretty good blueprint IMO. Engine upgrades and prettiness last.
Good luck man. I know you've been dying to wheel a car for a long time so enjoy the moment

Stick to your statement and build it modular. Don't take it off the road for more than a week at a time unless you suddenly are willing to spend :G-Dub:
Take a look at Siegs car. He has a nice ride that he has kept on the road (most of the time) and has made some key upgrades without breaking the bank or stalling his progress.
I can't argue with jumping on a 6 speed conversion. I would jump on that right off.
The car is a 20 footer or better so even though you can do paint leave it alone until you are done slinging big parts into and out of it. Just get rid of those dam bumperettes.
Take Gae's advice and put together a budgeted plan. Start with the $$ you are willing to spend and prioritize your wants based on what fits within that number.
Then lay in wait for a bit. If you buy good second hand stuff you can resale it down the road if you step it up and it won't really cost you. Sure you may want new brakes first but if seats show up at a great price buy them first.
When you save some $$ from the budgeted number by scoring a good deal then you can reallocate that $$ to another upgrade on your project plan.
Bottom line is be disciplined about it. :bitchslap: You just got out of one stalled project.
Wheels. For the first round wait for somebody who just bought a complete sub and tubbed their car to sell their "small wheels". I see nice looking wheel sets out there all the time. If you buy smart you can sell them if your project escalates. Bottom line JMO is don't buy them new because they are a big expense and their specs are dictated by so many pieces of the build you haven't settled on.
For you Camaro guys there are so many suspension options it make me dizzy. I don't pay that much attention to all the details of them for obvious reasons, are any of them modular? Can you do spindles and arms now with the stock sub and steering and later go full sub and rack? That way you can ease into it and get good brakes, that you can keep with future mods, on the car sooner than later. Doesn't the Ride Tech or Speedtech route allow you to do this?
Leave the stock rear diff alone for now. I'd target a rear suspension upgrade first. The front of a 2nd gen isn't terrible so look for a good deal to show itself for the rear. Save that $$ you want to dump on that 10 or 12 bolt to put it towards a nine inch.
Same with that motor. Clean it up and beat the snot out of it don't drop $$ into it.
You asked for opinions so you got mine.
BTW congratulations Charley Brown on finding the "great pumpkin" I hope your driving it today.
Good advice Rob
Rickster, get used to that punkin color buddy, it will serve you well through the many priority phases of the project. The timing of this and who it's from is pretty special IMO. Enjoy the journey. Be patient and don't bite off more than you can comfortably chew. Keep it fiscally under control so it's always an enjoyable hobby with positive thoughts and dreams for the future. I've seen too many hobby/project cars compromise finances and relationships and that simply ruins everything. Like Rob said......the more they're running the more you get to enjoy them.......no matter the performance level.
Let the planning and dreaming begin!

Thanks guys!
Rob and Seig and that guy that owes me dinner :buttkick: :hello: J/K Ron
You guys are giving some very good advise there and it is much appreciated! Yes the plan is to keep it moving and driving car as much as possible.
As for pumpkin color sorry its already in primer!! :hello:
J/K  but as I bought the best car I could get for my budget, I only can start with the things that won't cost me to much money.
First on the list is a manual trans, and wheels and tires. Then it's up to what kind of deals come around. Be leave me Rob I ain't buying no NEW wheels. Marty already made me an offer I may not be able to pass up. So next is the trans which I'm looking for now, I may just get a 4sp for now as I really don't want to buy to many parts more then once. The ride height is very nice (40 year old suspension) so maybe a god set of shocks and call it a day.
Brakes will be some kind of OEM stuff C6 and brackets from Tobin at Kore.
So that leaves me to the body and paint, remember I don't have to take the car anywhere to get it painted! And I can knock out an awesome jobs fairly quick, and paint well it doesn't cost me anything so this will most likely get done first thing.
Anyway off to sand the paint off of my car :hello:
T56 Mag close ratio..........nothing else! My trans is just starting to break in and it is such a treat, you need to drive it to appreciate it. It's your right hand's connection to your drivetrain...........and it feels REAL GOOD! :D
Big brakes and wheels first - I say this for a couple reasons 1) I bought wheels first, then installed the T56. 2) The speeds you can generate with the T56 almost created a very bad situation for me as I completely exceeded the limits of the stock front disks with 245/40/18 200TW front tires and came close to totaling the car. I called Tobin at Kore3 the next morning and ordered brakes.
The big aggressive manual brakes and T56 are the driving highlights of my car......for me. :D
Having just the right exhaust note even if you're not putting 550hp to the wheels doesn't hurt your image either.

It looks like it has a decent body so I wouldnt`t paint it till last. If it has a 8.5 10 bolt just freshen it up and add a "posi" . I have supercharged small block /Super T-10 combination in front of mine with just a couple of upgrades. A heavier duty carrier and 31 spline axels. On the suspension you can go a basic as using a Z-28 Suspension package to using a Vette Brakes C-4 Corvette suspension package like I did. There is quite a variety of both engine and suspension package out there .It depends on you and your check book.

yep, keep it simple. These 2nd gens already have a great base. They respond well to good shocks, sway bars and stiff bushings on stock arms. The only reason I would use a tubular arm is to get that tire away from the wheel housing when adding caster. That would be a good lower with a stock upper arm and Del-alum bushings. The Hotchkis lower moves the lower ball joint forward for increased caster.
Nothing wrong with the spindles, Custom works likes to add a tall upper ball joint for increased camber gain so you can run a low static number.
Adding big brakes is easy but that comes with 18's.
Chat Keith up a bit when you are ordering your CF bumperetts....if you get rid of your bumper guards don't toss them. Put em up on ebay. Set of 4 might just pay for some of your build. Keith also has a nice subframe connector and front frame support kits too.

The body is decent as in very little rust but all dinged up and I hate the color ! As for the brakes the plan is a set of OE C6 calipers front and rear. Suspension will be left mostly stock for now with a shock upgrade, and maybe a better set of sway bars. Wheels will be 18 front and back. As for engine it's got a crate 350 so that will stay for now as it runs nice and strong.

Ok so I jumped in last night and started to move things along!! :headspin:
Looking these pictures you will see why I bought this car! I found two rust spots under the carpet :bang: but I think you will all agree that for a 40 year old car it's not to bad??
First I removed 55lbs of old nasty carpet and factory sound deadener. And this is what was left.

Since you have some rust on the floor pans .I would replace those sections.as needed. Then paint the floor with bed liner. It seals and quiets the interior at the same time.

Looks like a great Build Rick!
I've struggled a lot with what route to go with my car, I had to really put sometime into what was my dream list and what I could really afford. With a family of 4 kids, 2 are teens, and my wife is a stay at home mom, my budget is what dictates my build and there isn't much I can do with about that. Moving twice across the country in the last year didn't help either. However I do what I can with what I got for my toys.
I built the car with about a $7000 budget. It's simple, it's a basic car on a decent suspension. With a mild 406 small block Chevy it's not super fast but has plenty of autocross torque. It gets about 18+ mpg on the highway and is fairly comfortable to ride in. Best feature of all it's a blast to drive everyday. That's what means the most to me, I can upgrade as I go and will, but unlike a lot of builds I really drive mine and that puts a smile on my face everyday. When it's track day that smile gets even bigger. Hope you can feel that too as you get into your build.
My build thread link is in my sig below if you want to check it out. Good luck!

Finally, someone else on a budget. I hope you stick to the budget plan and keep it moving forward. If possible, I suggest making only one major mod at a time--get it working correctly, then move on to the next one. All the while, you are watching the "For Sale" stuff and getting the best possible deal you can on the stuff that you want. At least this way you don't suffer the "Down Car" syndrome for years and years. I don't know anyone who loves that except for a few people we both know and whom shall remain nameless.

Hi Rick,

Randy not going to crazy really, it's a nice car but as with these old cars it had its fair share of WOW what were they thinking when they did that:lostmarbles:
Chicken wire in the rear window channel :bur2: two inches yes "two inches" of filler in the left fender at the front  !! Oh and radiator support is crushed and junk by the left crushed fender!!! It's all fixed now (pictures soon:_paranoid )
On a side note in no way am I trying to say Randy or Mark new any of the issues I've found once I got into the car! I new the fender had issues and Mark told me about it before I bought the car! Just wounder what some people think when they start putting a gallon of filler on the front half of a fender???

Yeah Doug I'm trying to stay on budget as much as I can! I've taken advantage of the for sale section already on a few things, Ricks stanless tank new in the box at half price, and a couple of other smaller items. The car won't be down for long. Getting some of the major stuff out of the way first.
Rick D
10-10-2013, 07:03 AM
Ok so it's been awhile since my last update  nothing major to report other then I have wheels and tires now :thankyou: Marty!!
They body is all stripped down to metal and no real issues with the out side other then a few small pin holes around the rear wheel openings. Oh and i thought who ever fitted the front fender used a lot of filler :disgusted: well his brother was using another gallon and half on the rear body panel :badidea: it was over two inches thick!!
I think I have my color nailed down and how I will do the stripe and trim on the car
I ended up getting rid of the chrome trim around the side windows, part of the Type LT package just didn't fit the whole theme I'm going for.
So here's a few pictures of where it's at now.
Before that what do you guys think about the side markers?? Keep'em or lose them?? Just can't decide.
Here's the fender when I started to strip it of its gal of filler!!

I'd say flush mount also since the metal has to be fixed. However, what does the glass cost? It's a custom piece isn't it? Or do you reuse the original and make all the changes in the channels? Yeah, we need a thread. You'll have to flush mount the front now too if you do the back. Do it! LOL

You use the stock glass the way Vince is talking about doing it. Mostly likely I won't as it still takes time to do it and I have an idea on what I'm doing with the trim and bumpers on the car so I really want to keep the trim so not this time :D

it looks really good to flush mount, but as a glass guy, do you add the channel/metal towards the edge of the glass or do you add the channel under the glass ? in other words, do you raise it to be flush? if you did i would thind the gap would be too much, so you add the metal to make the opening smaller?

yes, just move the channel closer. Then you add metal raise the base. We shoot for 1/4" edge gap and 3/8"base gap for the urethane.
or build up with urethane and run a rubber trim. Which would be totally reversable.

Cool project. Was just thinking that if you sold off 1/4lb amounts of genuine Stielow bondo you could raise money for the car. Solve two problems in one. Remove the bondo from your place and fund the car. Been reading through the thread and like your approach. I think my vote for suspension would be Ridetech as it's less invasive and keeps the car close to being on the road while you finish the body and paint. Just a thought. Good luck and realizing your dream.

Rick, that fender must be made by the same manufacturer that made mine. I bought a new front clip basically, and my right side fender looked a lot like that one. I am NOT a body man, and it just about drove me crazy trying to figure out how to MAKE the stupid thing work. There should be a law against taking new Sheetmetal, and cutting it and welding it, and using body filler. Junk isn't cheap, either!

It's from "Goodmark" who is owned by LKQ now which it us made by Legon!!

Yeah I hear you, the thing is I am a body man, well I've been in the collision industry for 25 plus year any way. Not my day job but still!! I had my own resto place and have done ALOT of restos so you think I would be used to getting this crappppp!!!
please tell me those are not AMD's.

Nope Goodmark made Legon. It was only $100 my org was smash real bad in the front, so now I'm just going to cut them both up and use the back of my org fender and the front of this patch panel.
I haven't decided yet on the otr, I only need one on the driver side my passenger is is perfect. Only need the rear lower section, but my window channel is junk as well (which is why the lower rusted out from all the water running down there). It's $320 my cost for a Goodmark (Legon) so I really don't want to spend the money on a full one so I'm not sure yet:headspin:!! Most likely I will replace the full qtr!! :weld:

Same Issue with those aftermarket fenders I got for my second gen! They look identical to those problem areas. Have you put the hood on? It is not even close to matching the crown on a original hood. I am surprised AMD hasn't done any front fenders for the second gens. The 1st fenders don't fit to bad.

:weld:
oh man you aint learned your lesson? AMD is $280 my cost plus shipping.

It's NOT an AMD part; it's a Legon in an AMD box!! :poke: so I paid $100 for your $280 fender that is the same :bitchslap: :lmao: :mock:

Thanks Ron, sometime you need to slow down to go fast!!
Glad that issue worked out for you Rick, everything you do on these cars is so time consuming which is hard to get for our own cars:thumbsup:
You are soooo right Jeff, I hope my work load stays the same for a few months :knokwood: but I keep hearing that's most likely not the case :badidea: :shakehead:

Ok quick question; marker lights or no marker lights??? And yes I know there are laws about it, I'm sure that's NOT what I would get a ticket for when it back on the road :D
Ahhh aftermarket garbage gotta love it! Funny the Golden liegion quarters fit my car the best! I went through GOODMARK and AMD . The more expensive AMD's fit the worse! Go figure. Rick just take it to Troy he will get those gaps perfect for you!!!:G-Dub:

To date, I haven't had any issues with AMD. Depends on what part you buy I suppose.

You are right my kids made that for my birthday when they were 6 years old now they are 12, they asked me the other day if I was going to take it down I said NEVER!!! I can build all the cars I want when they've gone on into life but I spend as much time as I can with them because some day they won't want us to!!

So after spending the last week working on the car and then searching for and planing out my suspension for the front and rear <WOW :hairpullout:
I've come to a couple of conclusions, first yup you guessed it this hobby cost a lot :hairpullout: and second man are there ALOT of options out there for a 2nd gen Camaro :waveflag:
I could build a 9 second drag car with motor for you can spend on upper end front and rear suspension for our cars.
The hardest part is trying to put the right parts together (system) you want this, but oh that would be cool to have. Yeah I know what's the intended use for the car :BlahBlah: I get all that. I know to go with a system from a vender and not try to rethink what they have already done. I was talking with my wife and she said why don't you just build the car you want?? :confused59:  And I said here's how much the just the suspension I want will cost and here's what she did :lmao:!! But said if that's what you want then go for it just don't show her the bill s for any of it!! :catfight:
Soooo after my long winded :BlahBlah: here's what I'm going to do, first I'm going back to the "KISS" method for this build!! I have two kids that will be in catholic high school in two years :hairpullout: and then collage after that! So just can't see spending that kind of cash now in my life it just doesn't make sense.
I'm going to finish the body make it perfect like a resto top and bottom. Rebuild all the parts I have suspension front and back, maybe a set of lowering springs (most likely as they will not cost that much).
As for the interior mine is in nice shape other then new carpet and redo the seats. So nothing crazy there.
Wheels well I'll see what comes up there but it will be on the lower end of cost that's for sure. I will do some little custom things to the body but nothing crazy. Just a nice street cruiser that's it!! :relax:
Anyway with all that said let show you a picture of my DSE sub frame I just ordered!! :D :ups:
J/K :D Now out to the shop to keep working on it because it's not going to finish it self ( ask me how I know that)??? :relax:

Just do all the stuff you can accomplish on the cheap. Most of the metal work can be done on a budget. We were mini tubing cars long before DSE tubs were available. As long as you can weld and stick metal where its supposed to go.
Rear suspension systems can be created. Links are cheap to build with parts available from Speedway, Spohn, and Summit. A RideTech air bar rear isn't too bad as far as cost.
That front suspension works fine. With better parts available now it would be even better. Our combo back in the day was Koni's, factory HD coil springs chopped to fit, 75-81 TA sway bars, new bushings and firewall bars. Several Solo II cars with this simple package did very well, Koni's painted gray of course. That's with rubber bushings and no frame connectors. (well a cage but you know)
The goal is to keep it running.
If you are serious about wanting to keep it under budget let me know.
We built this one with a serious budget in mind.
http://www.meanstreetsperformance.com/ignacios-70-camaro-rs-pro-touring-build.html
You would pee a little if you found out how much the rear suspension cost to build.

At this point, I'm following the same budget minded suspension path as you, Rick. I went with Custom Works for Viking coil overs and Speed Tech control arms on the front. You could easily save a bunch of money and stay with a coil spring/shock combo. I'm already a WS6 so I have the upgraded sway bars. For the rear, I'm trying out composite monoleafs with Viking shocks that match the front shocks. We'll see if this gives me the desired performance/budget balance I want. I'm not tubbed at this point. 9.5" on all four corners is the goal for me for now. Maybe one day I'll minitub. When I do, it's going to be with a strip of metal and not DSE tubs. I'm building a go car not a show car.
Good luck, Rick. I like your plan.

Ding ding ding!! Yup but it was at the back of the hood that lined up real bad, the hood was almost an inch up from the back of the fender. The line to the door was to bad; workable any. Plus this way the inner structure of the org gets to stay. It's not even close to the org.
Looks like someone went a little crazy with a cutoff wheel or plasma.....
Air saw :superhack: and spot weld drill, but not crazy (well maybe the guy running it) easiest way to it fix the issue in the end.
Rick D
09-02-2014, 05:15 AM
So the fender didn't line well to the hood, so it was either drill out all the spot welds at the top of the A/M fender and try to over it up and move the cage nuts down for the hood hinge or just use the front of the A/M fender as a patch panel :superhack: so as you can see which idea won, this will be the easiest fix in the end.
I also get to keep my org inner structure of the fender which the A/M doesn't look anything like:EmoteClueless: and I get a much better fitting fender. I should be all wrapped up with this part by next weekend. Then it's on to the rear end of the car!!!
More of this :superhack: to come!!

If you posses more skill than money go for the cheap stuff.
But nothing eats up more time and moral like an ill fitting part. You may save $150-200 but you'll be doing about 3 hours of extra work. The problem areas are the trunk gap and tail panel transition.
Hope to see it in primer soon.

I don't have firsthand experience with either but I've read enough comments here from folks that have worked with both and AMD appears to be the winner hands down.
The Boy's use AMD and that would be enough for me to spend the extra money vs. struggling with inferior product quality.
