Rather than slotting the track bar holes as I initially planned my dad had a better idea to mill offset holes. Here's a pic of the mock up.

Here's the drain plug. I ground and welded a thick washer offset from the bottom to hopefully save the bolt head from hitting something. After it was welded up we drilled the final hole size and tapped the hole for a drain bolt.

It's hard to believe the cars been sitting like this for 3 months. I just recently found time to work on it again.

No new pics so far this week. Just figuring out how I want to run the brake lines and what fittings I need. Also trimming up and boxing in the rear crossmember to be ready for final weld up of the track bar mount.

Unfortunately, nothing for me. I was out of the country for the past 5 weeks and just got back. This is my first weekend back and I'm not sure that I'll get a chance to be in the garage or not.

My dad finished up the subframe connector ties. They're ready to be welded to the connectors. He made them out of 3/16 and drilled and tapped 2 fine thread 3/8x3/4 bolts on each side. He drilled the tie and subframe together so the holes are exact.

A few brake line clips and removal of the old ford clip and the rear end will be ready for primer.

Sorry it took so long. I ended up having to get ahold of Will. I couldn't remember.

Not to many exciting updates or pictures lately. Got the upper 4-link pockets welded on the bottom and tying up some loose ends to prep for paint on the bottom side of the body. Hoping to shift gears and work on the top side again soon.

:) I hope something along the way helps. There's a lot of great info on this site!
I tried to watch the Super Bowl but kept wanting to throw something at the TV! I suffered through watching my Broncos lose. I wish more players beside Peyton Manning and Wes Welker showed up. No way to win with no defense, terrible O line, no running game and no open receivers. Got to hand it to the Hawks.. They played well. Especially defense. Enough of that.. Back to cars!

My iPhone panoramic view isn't quite cutting it. The pictures come out jagged and grainy.
I'm happy with how the rear end and 4-link turned out. Everything seems to be measuring out as planned so far. I need to recheck in relation to the center of the front sub frame making sure the entire car is square before I weld the sub frame connector ties in for good. It's also time for sway bars!

Thanks Vince! :thankyou: I appreciate you taking time to look at my build and give me feedback. You've definitely helped me along the way. It's got 3 machined into it with a half hole offset on each. You just can't see them with my crappy picture.

Thanks Gregweld. I follow you guys bantering back and forth along with all the great stories and awesome car projects. It's very entertaining and keeps me motivated! I'm also a hotrod guy so I can appreciate your perspective. We used to run an Enderle injected SBC 34 Ford coupe in B Gas. It's one of my favorite cars and hope to build a 33 or 34 some day.
Northwetner is right. I'm ready for some sunshine.
My priorities are still with my kids until they are both out of college so I had to start with something relatively cheap and work my way up. Believe me, more than once I've wished I could have gone out and picked up a nice car like Flash68 Dave did and make it my own from there.. Although Dave has just about rebuilt the whole thing now :D
I'd like to put a LS motor in it but my daughters tuition and books dictate otherwise.

 I'm not sure I have a plan.. Other than to get this thing on the road as soon as I can. It's funny you guys mention plans as I've been thinking I have no particular style or goals in mind other than I want a good handling car that I can drive comfortably. The muscle car equivalent of my wife's 335. More like a newer Corvette I guess, although I haven't driven one. As I'm nearing the end of fabrication I'm starting to sweat the styling aspects. I guess I had a plan in terms of function but not in style.
The LS is appealing to me as I intend to put a lot of miles on this thing :)

Slow and steady. Nothing exciting to post as I'm going through my punch list trying to get ready for body work. I ordered Corbeau GTS II seats from Kim at Matt's last week. I also ordered a NRG hub, quick release and Momo Tuner steering wheel so I can figure out my column. (Thanks to info from Vince and Sieg I now know what will fit)!!
I got the dash bolted in but I need to order a windshield and test fit before I can weld it. The steering wheel location won't really change so I can now mock that up. I just want to make sure the bottom windshield seal surface is correct before I weld it.

My head was touching the roof with the Corbeau seat brackets, sliders, and GTS II seats. I decided to cut the tabs off the brackets to move them down to the seat pan, back, and toward the tunnel 3/4 of an inch.

It took a little work to be able to mount the brackets tight to the pan in the front and up 3/16 in the rear while allowing room for the bolts.

He made most of the machined parts. The column is turning out nice. He made this transition piece to go from the lower cover to the 4" upper section. It's got a step in it to slip over the lower cover and hold it tight.

We wanted to maintain the collapsable feature of the column along with taking advantage of the telescoping and tilt so we spent a good portion of the day figuring out the best way to shorten the new column and how to make a cover sleeve that would taper down and fit behind the NRG hub. My dad milled down the column tube factory upper mount locations and modified the 68 upper mount so it would bolt together and to the dash the same as the factory. The internal shaft is a 2 piece double D collapsable design so I drilled out the injection molded pins to move up a few inches for new plastic pins.
My dad didn't like the factory open area for the shift tube on the steering box side of the column so he cut the outer tube and re-cut the notches for the bottom bearing and retainer. Looks much cleaner and won't allow dirt to get inside so easily.

The turn signal lever I bought online as part of a dress up kit was too narrow and sloppy. It also wasn't polished billet aluminum as advertised but rather poor quality chrome. I ended up ordering a different dress up kit from Lokar that should arrive soon.

Both of the new housing rings and the modified one worked out as planned. I have full tilt, about 3/4" telescoping and was able to keep the collapsable feature. The new top housing ring tucks inside the NRG hub so I can use the telescope without having a gap showing.

Brought the car home for body work and some other odds and ends. After unloading the car and tools I ran out of space. Need to talk the wife into at least a 3 car garage. Once you have one its tough to cram all your stuff into something smaller. Seems like the more space we have the more we collect to fill it. ;)

I mocked up the vintage air. The bulkhead and components are nice however there's room for improvement with the brackets and plastic housing.

I made a little bracket to mount the unit and vent on the passenger side. I also welded studs for the v shaped bracket on the top right and bottom left. The v-bracket works for either location so I made another one which really stiffened up the mounting. The main bracket was crooked. I had to slot the holes at a 45 to get the unit to mount level and for the retangular opening to match up to the controller plug. I also welded a couple button head allen's stuck through the cowl to mount the dash support while I was back there.

I've had a string of bad luck with parts and shipping. The first GM column dress up kit I bought on ebay didn't fit. I decided to buy a nice Lokar kit but it showed up with a two-piece turn signal lever. It's a billet too! I guess the shippers got a little rambunctious. :). It took 4 weeks but my replacement showed up today! Amazon is usually fast but not this time.

Back when I put the front end together the jig didn't want to sit down in the crossmember correctly. After talking to DSE who's never ran into this I decided to slot the motor mount holes equally and use shims to level the jig. Well now that I have all the parts to assemble and align the car didn't have enough adjustment and used two shims on the passenger side and 0 on the left. The factory UCA's had the same issue. I thought it was due to the car being hit. Turns out the subframe was built on a Friday just before quit'n time at the factory just like the drivers side rocker that sticks out an 1/8 too far. Lesson learned is to wait for all parts to mock up and measure everything or get a better piece to start with. I figured it would be fine using the jig. I'm not happy with it so I decided to cut out the drivers side UCA coil over mount and move it over 3/16 where it needs to be. This was a huge job with a cutoff wheel and air saw but it cleaned up nice. I filled in the gap with 1/4 stock and welded it up with multiple passes. It looks a lot better with the same number of shims on both sides and knowing I can adjust the camber as needed was worth it. Before I couldn't get any straighter than -1.5 deg on the driver side.

Greg, you are absolutely right. I was a little hesitant to cut into it, especially without a plasma cutter, but I kept thinking about it. I'm glad I did. Now I can sleep well knowing the root cause is fixed rather than to keep trying to work around the issue. I even thought about making a new offset UCA shaft. That would have been a whole new can of worms. This fix didn't really cost me anything (other than a new angle gauge I dropped on the floor) so it works out well all the way around.
The past few days I have a new dilemma. Ironically the AMD fender with a little tweaking fits a lot better than the factory one on the drivers side. The drivers side fender was hit at one point and has shallow dents and the inner structure is tweaked slightly. It's the only original sheetmetal left on the car beside the rockers and cowl. I'm going back and forth on buying a new fender or use a little filler on this one. The truck freight's a killer. It's nearly as much as the fender. For some reason I buy into the filler stigma. I don't really want any. The skim coat I've put on the car is nearly all blocked off. The fender would require a 1/16" thick or so in some areas.

Yeah, in reality I pretty well do everything myself or my dad helps me out. I guess I like things done a certain way. Now that you mention it I'm a little afraid of how it's going to be when the cars finished. Or maybe it's never finished! :) I do enjoy tinkering with things. My son wants a 1st gen Mustang so we may start that after this one is drivable.
71 is very cool!! There's certain aspects of both the 1st gens and 2nd gens I really like. It would be nice to have one of each. Pretty sure the wife wouldn't go for that! Years ago I really liked the 2nd gen Reher Morrisons drag car. They later ran a 3rd gen which was cool too. For whatever reason to me the rounded 2nd gen just looks fast standing still.

It always seems to scrap paint when you go to open the doors after 6 coats of paint and clear. My body guy learned that lesson once.

Hey Vince. You're still at it putting in the long days! Good point on mocking up the glass and trim. I did the windshield but keep forgetting the other glass. Is fitting the rear enough since the quarter and door glass is adjustable?
I hear you on the fender support. I've had to do that already to get clearence. It's part of the reason I keep debating on replacing the driver side fender. The support is pushed in on top and down and out on the bottom just below the mid line. The mid body line is flattened a little. There were two tears/cracks I had to weld up as well. One at the edge of the top support at the top body line and the other at the mid body line. I've been able to move the metal a little to make it fit a hell of a lot better but it is tighter than the passenger side in the area you mentioned. Things just don't want to move back in place with that big structural support being slightly tweaked. I can't decide if I should replace the fender or not. It's wavy where the support is to the door edge. I ran a straight edge down the side of the car and it's going to take a little over 1/16" of filler at the worst spot. I guess it's not a big deal as I purposely worked the edge out to proper height so I'm not having to build up the edge with filler.

Is that a new fender or original? You have gone this far you may as well tear into it. If you buy a new replacment you'll end up having to work it anyways. -especially at that upper tip won't match the door. Something that bugs me with the aftermarket metal.

Flying is right! I hope yours are doing well. I thought puppies were like babies and pretty resilient. I didn't expect her to blow out both elbows from jumping a couple feet off the ground. Our other lab was wild and crazy as a puppy and nothing happened. Guess we were lucky! We were shocked but the ortho doc says its not as rare as you would think. The vet talked about having to amputate both front legs when we brought her in. Obvious quality of life issue and possibly putting her down. We weren't having that so we got an orthopedist to do the surgery on both legs. One has healed ok and the other shows signs of bone loss and hasn't grown back together. 3 surgeries in and they're talking about amputation again. Ugh! It makes me sick to my stomach. My wife found water therapy and stem cell treatment but it runs $2500 to $3k. That's a lot of car parts! I think our puppy needs her own credit card too. And a job to pay for it! The puppy is actually my daughters and she has me wrapped around her finger. What do you do.

I don't know how you do it. You must be younger than me or a machine. I was able to do it until my mid thirties and burned out. Now I work for the man. ;) There are times when I miss my business but never the hours.
Original. The AMD one on the passenger side fit ok but you're absolutely right. I had to work it for a while too. Overall the AMD's a better fit comparing to the accident damage on the original. I also have to change the light flange on the original from RS to standard which was my other excuse. :) It seems easier to go the other way from std to RS. If it weren't for $200 shipping I wouldn't think twice. Back to the garage I go. I'm pretty sure I can make it work.

I'm glad I put the car together before paint although I'm not looking forward to tearing it down again. I've ran into a number of electrical and mechanical issues which I didn't expect.
The 69 Camaro Painless wire harness didn't actually match the included wiring diagram. After burning up a brand new alternator I found a wire factory spliced into the ignition wire in the main harness. Apparently they expect everyone's running a 1 wire alternator even though the instructions cover multiple configurations. Separating the two and heat shrink got me squared away and my alternator light working as expected. I've since changed the factory Camaro gauges over to Dakota Digital which I couldn't be happier with.
Had some other minor issues such as leaking thermostat housings that were just poor quality, poor quality eBay valve covers that don't properly fit the gaskets, sticky fuel sending unit, unclear heater hose routing that I screwed around with for a month or so finally settling on an edelbrock aluminum pump and rerouting things, along with many interior trim parts that don't fit well/poor quality.
The biggest issue has been a vibration I have yet to track down. The transmission has been out the car numerous times, driveline trued and rebalanced 3 times and a weight recently fell off again! (Don't get me started on that vendor) new trans output shaft bushing and seal, replaced clutch/pressure plate, 3rd member, wheels with road force balancing. It's been a challenge. When I lost the ability to shift into second under high RPM I decided to pull the Super T10 out. I'm currently putting a Magnum T56 in with new bell and driveline.
Its been tough finding good quality shops in this area as well. Im envious of the guys in CA. I've hired out the headliner install, the exhaust install, and glass install. So far the headliner was the only work done to my satisfaction. The glass leaks as well as the exhaust, and it wasn't installed as agreed. The tailpipes are 2 piece/overlapping joint and welded directly to my mufflers instead of band clamped as requested and parts supplied. At this point I think I would have been better off buying a lift and doing the work myself being that I had 1k in parts plus 1k in labor for unsatisfactory work.

Thanks Vince. It's epoxy. I think it's close to being ready for paint although someone opened a door into my drivers door already. It's minor so I'll fix it and a few other things when I get ready to shoot it. I'm still going back and forth on paint colors. Red Rock Metallic, Sonic Blue, Black,..

On a side note sorry to hear all of the issue you had towards the end but let me just say your semi-finished project looks incredible.

I have thought about keeping it satin as well although it's hard to take care of and I'm not sure how to blend or match satin to fix a couple scratches and a door ding. The sheen of this epoxy is highly affected by temp, amount of reducer, and gun settings. I surprisingly get a lot of compliments on it though. Many people have suggested not painting it. Since I can't decide what to do its stayed like this all summer.
The bugs I've been chasing down are just part of the process I guess. Although building an entire car from the ground up I figured my research and new parts would be acceptable. I can say there's a few outstanding vendors, a few so-so, and a few I won't deal with
again.
Detroit Speed, Summit, Wilwood, Matts Classic Bowties, Dakota Digital have been great in terms of service and quality parts. I also want to point out Formula43 has been amazing to work with. They helped me resolve some issues with a different brand set of wheels and built me a new set and delivered ahead of schedule and with great lateral and radial runout.
OER, Painless, Vintage Air, and AMD have been so-so. Some OER parts look great and fit well and others aren't close. PUI/OER seals and trim fit terribly. I haven't found good fitting seals or door strikers yet. The AMD hood was wavy and the front latch holes are drilled too far back by 1/2". The front upper valance and cowl boxes took some work as well. The VintageAir system is nice but mine came shipped with the wrong air handler outlet to fit the dash hoses. The quality of the mounting brackets is suspect as well. They are very thin and the paint falls off. The Painless harness kit would be great if all the wire colors and connections actually matched the instructions. I tested continuity on every wire tracing things out but that's wasn't enough when I later found the alternator idiot light wire was factory spliced into an ignition wire. I bought a fast ratio steering box from AI-Cardone to get by until a DSE 600 box is available. The threads were so sloppy the bolts pulled right through. I got a replacement and it only had power assist one direction. I bought and AGR box and it only had assist the opposite direction. I ended up getting a box from autozone that I'm running now. It has power assist both directions although the center is sloppy. Hoping DSE ships more 600 boxes soon.
I'm working through some minor American Powertrain issues right now. After consulting with them and ordering a complete kit for just shy of 6k so far it's been hit and miss on which parts will work. Granted I have a bit of a unique setup as I explained to them with half height body mounts and welded in DSE like x-member. The parts are nice quality but the shifter stick is very tall, bent to the left (even though the trans is rotated that way 5 deg) and almost touching my steering wheel. The clutch master cylinder bracket leaves a huge open hole for water to get in where the old factory rod and boot passed through. Because of the factory hole and the bracket design there's also not much metal to get a bolt through. One clean hole and another right on the edge of the original hole. The rest of the support is by the pinching of the firewall between the two plates of the bracket. Again the bracket is nice quality just like the APT crossmember but the bracket doesn't overcome the factory firewall limitations like the Keisler or MSP brackets do.
I only mention the challenges so others have a heads up on things to consider before investing time and hard earned money.

I built a new crossmember for the 6 speed and had to modify the car a bit as well. My original plan was to run some tubing or flat bar with some ribs across the two legs I had shooting straight down from the crossmember. I figured it's better having the fasteners in shear rather than tension so I cut the caps off the 2x3 crossmember and welded in 1/2" plugs. My original design would have been less work but I'm glad I put the time in now that it's done. The .010 ridge on the edge of the plugs was to locate it with .125 exposed for welding all around the perimeter.

I was at a standstill on how to approach certain things on my car, Qtr panels, outer wheel wells, Roof, and Truck. If I follow your process, I can finish the rear of the car. I was not sure how to tackle the cowls with sealant. You showed me when and how. I want to thank you for documenting every step of your build. You have helped me in more ways than you can think. I've slowly been acquiring parts. I bought a true-trac today so I can get my other 3rd member back together with 3.89 gears. I've also started to look at how I'm going to seal the tunnel back up. I'm hoping to make a section removable but it depends on how it works out where the tunnel meets the firewall. Tying this together looks challenging.

This must be a great idea because I plan on doing that to my car, too, ha ha! (I'll need to do this when I remove my bellhousing next to align it better) If it helps inspire ideas even though I haven't built mine yet I plan on making mine with an overlap of the sheet metal and using rivet nuts so I have an easy way to thread bolts down from the interior of the car. I'll use something like a 3m weather stripping putty to seal the panels yet still be removable.
Here's an example of them from amazon if you're not familiar- these things are awesome and are available in many thread sizes.

Understood. Of course, if you're covering this with carpet/ dynamat, etc. you may not even need a flange. A simple overlap should do the trick and should be hidden underneath. To quote Doc Brown " please excuse the crudity of this sketch...." Its rough, and I think I have way too many rivet nuts...

you're too kind. Understood on keeping it water tight- that's why I was thinking of the dum dum to help seal it, as well as any possible exhaust fumes. The recessed flange will likely require shrinking in the top four corners which (at least for me) would be a PITA to do that and maintain the shape of the tunnel. I'd have to resort to cutting and welding them, ha ha

Trying to think this through. I have an ignition box, coil, and ECM to fit somewhere. Looks like the only two places I have are under the console and between the cowl and glove box right above the vintage air. Not much room in either location and I prefer to be able to remove the tunnel without much trouble. Ignition and coil just barely fit under console and can be unplugged if needed. This may be the route I go.

I was going to comment on this placement and heat -- but I have not used or owned one of the newer digital versions so held back.
I'd find out how much heat is generated before I'd choose an enclosed location like this. If it gets hot - I'd factor in some way to ventilate that area.

Thanks for the insight guys. I didn't even think about the heat. I just assumed it would be better than the engine compartment but didn't think about the fact it generates its own. In my '56 Nomad that had a bench seat -- I put the MSD under the passenger side... it had plenty of room and air circulation.
If you're not painted etc -- you can make some brackets and put it under the fender and hide it mounting it on the wheel well.... they can be painted to match or blacked out etc.

Hell with the 6AL-2 you could mount that sucker next to the battery in the trunk. Battery wires short, run tach, coil leads and ignition sense to the front. Those wires don't care how long they are.
Mount the e core coil on the intake manifold, it can take the heat.

No problems with the extended wires. The added ohms is neglegible. The coil wire to distributor is the only one that will not like added ohms. MSD recommends the Bat+ and Neg- go directly to the battery.

I completely agree. I prefer to make all the LS modifications now if possible but I'm not sure if I'll have enough time to make it happen. The Vortec motor may go back in if I run out of time before spring. My priority is to spend time with my dad and son and enjoy the cars whenever the sun's shining out here in the Pacific Northwest so I don't want to leave the car apart to long.
I have a number of items left on my lunch list to finish up as well. II Much fuel vent and roll over valve. Rear end vent. E brake. Swap the 3rd member. Modify the engine compartment side of the harness by adding weatherpack connectors to make it easier to do maint. Center console. Seems like I keep adding to the list faster than I check items off. :)

The builder is really humming along on the house -- just moved the move in dates up a full month!! They're cranking on the interior now and some of them have been working on the weekends.
I don't miss the rain one iota!!! When it does rain here - Gwen and I both look at each other and say "don't miss that!". The other night we were walking in the snow and ice to the car --- and I said --- I don't mind how cold it is - or the snow compared to that crappy rain all the time! She agreed. Amazing how it changes your outlook!

I've been researching like a mad man. I'm less clear on direction now than ever. I thought I would be able to get away with a small turbo setup with low boost to have a predictable power torque curve but I'm not so sure of that now. As I spin around in circles with all the research and opinions out there I keep coming back to a NA EFI motor. There's nothing wrong with my vortec motor I just want to go EFI but the cost to do that opens the door to go LS. I think at this point I'm going to finish up the work I already started and give myself some time on the motor.
I also have to say.. After spending a lot of time browsing other forums I'm even more glad I chose lat g for my build thread. Definitely the best community I've come across.

Well, to me, the biggest issue with fitting an LS engine is making the transmission fit since you have to cut the floor. Everything else needed can be made to fit the car rather easily. So what you could consider doing now if it would be a huge chore later is to cut the floor for the T56 and just run the T10 until you swap the drive train. Just a thought. Don't over think it too much. Be honest with your goals and desires for the car and realize that while nice, the LS motors aren't the be all end all for performance. It's not like you're running a flat head V8 now. Good luck!

I hear ya Trey. The current motor runs strong. I just put a Mag T56 in the car and had to cut the tunnel and make a crossmember. Something happened to the second gear synchro in the ST10 which is what prompted the new trans. Now that I have a big hole in the floor I'm contemplating how much to change to make it how I want now or later. I guess the only thing really holding me back from throwing the old motor back in for now is I don't know the QuickTime bell housing height difference between the two generations of engines. I don't want to modify the firewall and tunnel again. I'm hoping to leave the trans in the same spot and use adjustable for/aft LS mounts if/when that happens. The AC pump on a LS is a concern too as I have a modified stock subframe. Truth be told I could put EFI on this motor and probably be happy. I'm just reluctant to put another 3k into the old SBC platform. Cash and time seem to really drive these decisions lol. Otherwise I would have put an LS/T56 in from the start.

Have you seen EFI Connection's kit for putting fuel injection on the 383? That might be cheaper. The other option that could save some cost is to go with the later speed density L98 system. I realize it's archaic but it works. I would lean towards the EFI Connection system though.
The only thing I forgot to mention before was your power goals. Depending on what they are, it might be almost necessary to go LS. It's not that the SBC can't make the power, it just starts to get cost prohibitive. If you're wanting more than 500hp NA off the engine, I think the answer is clearly LS.
Good luck!

How much power is your vortec making and where do you want to be?
If you're close to your power levels and you're happy with your engine, then I don't believe that it would be worth the expense to switch over. In addition to the engine itself, there is the AC like you said, as well as exhaust manifold/ headers, wiring upgrades and possible fuel (electric fuel pump/ return lines) that you'd need to consider in your budget. Also, depending on what you have now- things like electric fans for the cooling and intake pieces may need purchasing, too.
However, if you know that you want more power in the future maybe it's worth cutting this engine loose now and switching over to an LS (versus spending more $$ on fuel injection for your current engine and delaying the inevitable). I'd recommend a gen 4 engine (skip the LS1/ LS6) maybe an LS3??
Hope this helps

Regarding EFI Connection.. I've considered their parts before when looking at cam sync options. They look to be good quality. For electronics I can run an Accel Thruster for next to nothing but think it may be wiser in the long run to go with the Holley HP my dad is switching over to so we're on the same system.
Based on what I've read I'm guessing I'm around 400 hp/tq but don't know for sure as I haven't dyno'd the motor. This is just a loose assumption based on similar builds. I would like to be around 500 hp/tq and efi for low end throttle response and drivability.
Brendon, a lot of that is what I've been kicking around in my head. All the supporting parts add up for sure.
You guys make a lot of great points. I appreciate your insight.

Edit: I want make sure it’s clear the Screamin’ Performance kick panels are high quality. I dont want to mislead anyone. They fit my car perfectly. Better than the original plastic and definitely better than a few sets of aftermarket plastic kicks I’ve had. The fit and finish is top shelf. I just have a specific application I’m trying to accommodate. In fact the black gel coat is so nice I ran these kicks for a year without covering them.

I drew up a center channel bracket in Autocad Fusion 360 to fit in the factory dash location. Its a 2 piece modular bracket with interlocking tabs. I'm able to mount a Dynaudio e110 tweeter or e430 mid. I also designed and printed an interference fit enclosure for the mid. I'll have to test to see which speaker combination I'll go with. I have more mid bass than I expected during initial testing so hopefully this works out.

Made some brackets out of 1/8"x1" flat bar to mount the speaker baffle. Can't tell from the pic but the front bracket is bolted to the dash with a button head Allen bolt that's hidden under the dash pad. The other option I had was to utilize the center screw hole for the dash trim bezel. The other bracket is a simple z shape utilizing the factory speaker mounting tab near the firewall.

Today I tested the Dynaudio e110 tweeters in the dash center location with my attempt at wave guides. The "wave guides" do help move the image a little away from direct center and clean up the sound a little bit.

I like the e110's matched up with the e650's in the kick panels currently crossed over at 3500Hz. The car sounds day and night better over the Focal 6.5 components I had in the kick panels. The mid bass now has impact, the mid range no longer has a huge spike around 500Hz and the staging is way higher. Even though the tweeters are in the center of the dash I still have good width. The center is just a little too centered for me. It sounds like the vocals are right on the cowl hood scoop. I want them directly in front of me so I'm going to try a deeper modified waveguide.
Keep in mind I'm trying to keep the dash and A pillars clean. I don't want my car to look like a stereo build. I want a clear view of all those cones in front of me as the point of this car is to drive it. I just want a decent stereo for those long drives.

As part of my plan to keep the car clean and have decent staging I think I'm moving away from the idea of running a mid/tweet center channel or 2 mids with tweeters out on the corners of the dash. Especially now that testing center mounted tweeters is going so well. I dont care for the look of pillar mounted large speakers and I don't want to cut the corners of the dash structure to fit a tweeter since the car is essentially done. I've seen DSE build recessed metal pockets in the corners for a 1" tweeter which looks nice but I'm past that point. Besides my e110's are 3 times the size. I also don't want to cut out the VIN location on the dash. The other plan I came up with was to build a fiberglass dash pad structure and hide the tweeters under flush mounted grills in a vinyl wrapped dash pad.
So far testing has been promising with the center dash mods so I'm going to exhaust this approach before reconsidering the fiberglass dash pad idea.

^^ Thanks guys. I hope something out of it will be useful for someone.
I printed the new tweeter waveguides but haven't had a chance to test them. I used a course .3mm print setup but they are actually smoother than they look in the pic. The guides press down to where they just touch the tweeter and sit flush on top when installed. Work has been hectic lately.
My plan is to test all 3 dash speaker combinations back to back; dual mid, mid tweet, dual tweet (shallow and deep wave guide setups). Hopefully this weekend I'll have some time.

I setup my different speaker options and played a number of songs back to back. I've figured out what I like and don't like. Even with good tonality it drives me crazy to have a low sound stage and poor imaging; apparently I've become a music snob.
Keep in mind I've done all of my testing so far with passive crossovers. My thought is to get things a close as I can before committing to the number of amps and installing my Helix DSP Pro processor. I plan to build an amp rack out of 1-5/8 tubing so I only want to build it once.. Famous last words.
All of the center dash baffle options were too focused at center. I tried adding a second set of 1" tweeters firing straight up on the corners of the dash by the A-pillars and it helped bring the center vocals right in front of me where I wanted them but the sound wasn't as clean and imaging seemed smeared across the dash if that makes sense. Instrument and vocals lost some of their definition in placement. That option is definitely out so I went back to just tweeters in the center dash.
The center mounted tweeters with shallow or deep waveguides seemed to have very similar imaging. I've gone back and forth on the two versions thinking one or the other moved vocals more directly in front of me then I would think the opposite as it changed depending on the song and appears to be somewhat affected by volume. The waveguide may be a complete waste of time as it's not a real engineered waveguide. The mouth exit diameter is 4.3" (wavelength of 3100Hz) but the taper and depth is based on space required to fit my AC vent and the e110 wire frame dome protection won't allow me to bring the guide all the way in to the edge of the dome. Regardless, the image is too focused at the cowl hood scoop.
I disassembled the e430 center channel and placed the e430's in small test enclosures in the kick panel door hinge access cutout pointing up at the rear view mirror. I retained the center mounted deep waveguide e110's along with the e650's for midbass achieving the best results so far. The e430's brought the image from center to directly in front without smearing the imaging. I still noticed a slight rainbow affect with male vocals on certain songs, although not as pronounced as without the e430's in the kicks, and I think I can clean it up some by tweaking crossover points. This looks to be the best compromise without cutting into the car. If I didn't have glass and a final painted dash installed I might have been up for fabricating dash mount recessed tweeter locations but I'm well past that now.
I have to cut the old Focal tweeter locations out of the Screamin' Performance fiberglass kick panels so it looks like I'm going to mock up the e430's in their place. We'll see if I can come up with enough energy to do something this weekend.
Here's the deeper center mount I tested with.

I ran a few RTA tests with the deep waveguides in the center baffle. e650's and e110's only. No e430's.
I captured the following driver and passenger side positions:
seat headrest (left and right ear sweeps)
dash center (aligned with edge of speaker grill)
dash middle
dash pillar
The dash center vs dash pillar shows a drop around 12Khz on up at the pillar.
The seat position isn't too bad compared to the previous kick panel tweeter locations.

I want to re-state I’m trying to find the best compromise in staging, imaging, and tonality working within the confines of minimal modification to the car since it’s painted and close to complete. Functionality of the car on the track is still my priority as I enjoy autocross more than car audio.
Based on my rudimentary testing and my experience with this car if I were to rebuild it with car audio as a priority I would put 8’s or 10’s in the kick cowl vent area and likely 3’s or 4’s in the kicks with tweeters in the corners of the dash near the pillars.
Also, as I understand, RTA testing doesn’t necessarily show staging and imaging although it appears to show the correlation of loss of image width with stereo tweeters in the center location as both SPL and frequency response go down the further I measure across the dash toward the pillar. These measurements are secondary to critical listening for me but I also want a measured comparison of the short and deep waveguides for my own curiosity. I don’t think the dash measurements are useful for anything else anyway; as what matters to me is the staging, imaging, and tonality at the driver and passenger seats.

The power outages over the weekend killed my Ruckus wireless controller. After a few failed attempts to repair the onboard flash drive I’m back online after giving up on the proprietary flash and converting my AP’s to standalone. The power outages also caused a few 3D prints and CNC operations to fail.
All that to say I haven’t uploaded the comparison of short vs deep tweeter waveguides but it’s clear the deep waveguide performs better. I took REW RTA measurements at dash center, dash middle, and dash end near pillar, as well as left and right seated head position. My laptop is tied up running the CNC overnight so hopefully I can post the graphs soon.
I’m cutting birch mounting rings for the e430’s I’m planning to fiberglass in the kick panels. It’s going to take days at the 1mm cutting depth and .5mm/s feed rate so I’m hoping upgrading the spindle max from 10k to 30k RPM will allow me to speed things up.
