View Full Version : FAKE to Riches...
I just finished watching tonights episode of Wrecks to Riches where they built a 69 Camaro. That show is so fundamentally artificial. I have seen the last three episodes and the same people are on site bidding on the cars. I feel as if the good people of TLC have grossly underestimated their audience and think they can pull one over on the viewer. In addition, that car was a piece of caca. Anyone can slap a paint job and wheels on a car and say it's custom. If this Barry fellow is so "high profile", enough to warrant his own show, he should try building cars that will impress audiences with craftmanship and creativity. You can slap a bow on a piece of crap, but it's still a piece of crap. Just my thoughts after blowing an hour on the couch. Any comments???
I thought the red convertible Camaro that closed at $25.5K was a heck of a deal! :captain:

What doesn't make sense to me is when he looks at the vehicles, he just walks around them and says "OK". You would think he would be crawling all over and under it. He needs to send someone else to check over his prospective purchases.

I just have to rant about this complete and utter BS of a show.
First.... he pays $6200 for a shell without looking it over... hell, i sold a 69 for $9,000 and it ran and had full interior!!
Secondly, the whole ploy from the police department was so over the top fake i almost tossed my cookies on my TV. Worst acting i've ever seen from just about anyone.
Finally, when it came to auction... that little red 69 'vert went for $25,000... was a steal!!! Then his "custom" camaro, which was nothing more than shiny paint, a big motor and some wheels slapped on went for over $60,000. And guess who won!?!? THE SAME GUY WHO WON THE FIRST CAR!! Can you say "set up"? or Corporate stooge? Jeez, give me a break!!
I'm just beside myself with how bad this show is. I tried to give it a second chance and boy oh boy do i want my 1 hour of my life back.
0/10 worst show ever.

Apparently the grey headed dude as a hard on for Barry's cars and thinks the first cars in his new line of (super mucle cars) is going to be worth big bucks. Still trying to figure how they come up with the build cost on this show when they do not take into account the rate per hour to build the car and do the metal work. I am guessing the $45,000 was just for all of the parts.
Yea, I would have liked to have had the opportunity on the 68 conv.

I saw the one with the orange Chevelle, and the one last night with the black Camaro. I too thought the same guy bought both, guess I was right. What a joke! Boycott that show.
I wonder how much dirt was in those stripes that they just painted out in the open like that, .

I know I'd be pretty sick if I bought the car and then later seen the show!
Why even try to build the car in 2 weeks? What is the point? I do not feel it adds anything to the drama of the show. I would think a lot of the people watching this type of show are "Car" people and want to see how to build a car properly, not how fast they can build a car. I would love to see american hot rod or similar show take a whole season to build one car and be able to see the detail. I guess I must be the minority and the majority of the viewers want to see the BS drama.

I thought the same thing. They didnt even tape up much of the fenders to spray the stipes.
I think the show is a joke and the fact that the same guy keeps buying the cars is getting a kick back from the show/TLC. IMO
All in all I still like any car show out there. I would not mind driving the 71 Sat he built last week.

We invite you to check out V8TV where we're building a '69 Camaro from the floors up (literally) all year long. And not just to push it through an auction, but to be tested, tuned, and driven. If you're into that sort of thing.

The winning bidder has come to Barry's rescue 2 of 3 episodes now. If it happens again, I'll probably stop watching. Though, as I said before, it's not American Loser...errr..Idol and it's not another lame over-dramatized cop/court/hospital/foresics spin off show. I'm all for more car makeover shows...good, bad or otherwise. (Unique Whips and Pimp My Ride are the exceptions because "Bling" is stupid IMO). I don't watch the show to critique the production shortcomings or even to watch the "high-profile" builders get into a tight situation. I just want to see the process of taking a beater and transforming it into a cool car.
My critique of this episode: I never saw Chris Brown finish the rendering...not that it was a terribly exciting car anyway. Silver, flat-black stripe, big rims and stupid "SMC" logo.....ZZZZZZZZZZ. Chris is pretty good at drawing and rendering but I think we have a lot more talent as far as design and artistic ability on this site based on what I've seen of his work on the show (and other shows he's been on). Maybe there should be a show based on contest between car designers...there's a reality/makeover show about everything else! :D
I sure as S*** wouldn't have just done a 1 minute walk around on that car considering the guy wanted $7grand for it. It turned out to be a total rat....$9K on new sheet metal...c'mon! As far as I'm concerned it was no more than just another rotted out $2K 69 Camaro....I saw 3 of them in the local want-ads last week.
That 'vert was definitely a steal....I'd personally rather have that one and throw some custom rims on it.
Just my $.02 :D

Last nights episode was a excellent for "how not to build a car". I am no expert but even I know to finish all the metal work and mock up before you paint the car. I don't care what bogus deadline or unrealistic build cost they tell you. The Camaro episode was the worst of all 3.
They claim old car with new technology? What new technology? A push button shifter instead of a horseshoe shifter? Get real. Showed a Ford 9" and mentioned nothing about the front? Lets order the wrong O'Reilly's water pump so we can show some drama on TV.
The sad thing is: I will probably watch it next week to see what moronic thing he does next. I know he has built some very wicked Street Rods in the past. I remember one they should on Rides a couple years ago they were installing a Northstar in. The work they showed on that car was nothing like the hack crap on this new show.

Totally agree... I knew those were the things everyone else was going to pick up on so I didn't add them to my rant. I was pretty amazed by the fittment problems encountered on the supercharger install...that thing was WAY off!

I'd love to see it but I'd rather spend my money on car parts than dish network. Regular cable is too expensive as it is. You've got another viewer if you come to Speed Channel or even Spike's Powerblock.

I hear ya. The channel recently told us that they recently signed a deal with Time Warner cable in some cities. About 1/2 of the show distribution is cable, the other, Dish.
Anyway, I liked the line about how they were not going to "patch" the car together as they weld in a patch in the floor...
