Here is a copy of my spreadsheet I have been keeping on the "Shop Beater" project. This was basically built from scratch, all I had original was the shell and seat frames!! Every screw, nut, bolt, trim piece, etc is all brand new. This by far not the way to build a car. The nickle and dime parts really eat you up. This also does not include sheetmetal

Thats one hell of a list. But that is a good idea to keep track of all the costs. Even though the total may be a little shocking, at least you know it, and it can help for next time or for others to find ways to cut costs here and there.

I tried keeping an excel model of my costs when I first got my car, but it didnt turn out so organized.

Thanks for sharing.

yeah I have every receipt, shipping document, etc. I know everything about this car, I assembled, I bought the parts, and I did it all!! I was really hoping to keep the build under the $25K, but I threw in a 5 speed, then came 9", then big brakes, you know it just rolled down hill from there. Oh well , looks like the price tag will be $50K if someone wants it now!!

as a matter of fact I am still there. My list is long and expensive as well, you still have a ways to go to catch me as I really did it the long and expensive way...replace every panel with GM NOS stuff, etc

I did not see a motor in you list or did I just get lost in the numbers. LOL

yeah this is all the out of pocket cost so far!! The motor has been sitting on a stand in my shop for a little over a year jsut waiting to go in something!! If I add in the motor and other stuff I used I already had we'd be over $45K already

I thought you were holding back. Your are in deep, just don't look back.

Stuart I was that guy. When you bought the red 68 I was really considering selling my 69 project to buy it, I was thinking, hey for the sales price mine would be way better. Nope I was wrong. I will be in double by the time it is finished...and I could have been driving for the last 3 years instead of building this thing.

Payton, I know its amazing how many dollars these cars TRULY cost. It takes building one to TRULY find out , huh. LOL.

Damn you!! you just made me realize I left off the two gallons of PPG Global Clear, and Global Hardner and reducer. Chock up another $1000. The paint materials are half the expense in painting, I know including PPg primer, and all PPG base and clear, there is close to $2K in materials alone!!

That is why when people start talking about a $5000 paint job being too much, I just want to choke them.

I have a (two) folders full of reciepts on the goat. One day I will actually add them up instead of just doing the simply math in my head. Right now I really don't want to know the true number.

She is the one with the folders. I bet she knows the totals too. No problem there. In fact she saw to it that we used the car as a tax deduction this past year. Advertisement baby. Read the first sentence in the magazine article. That sentence is there for a reason.

It'll contain all the build pics that shows haw everything was done, and also every reciept for every nut, bolt, and part!! See hwo they liek it when I prove em' wrong!!

Labor what the hell is that??? Niec to be able to do it yourself ain't it!1 Only bad thing is I can't bill myself for my labor.

Lets see if I add labor in to the cost. We'll say 50 days average work time of 4 hours, 14 weekend days averaging 10 hours each, thats 340 hours total, times 2 men brings to 680, plus the 60 hours my painter put in for free, total hours 740. At my current shop labor rate of $50 per hour, brings the total to $37,000 labor alone!!!

I just made an order to jegs the other day..........950$$ and it all was in 1 box........ :(

You should see the shipping charges to Hawaii... Try adding $400 to that $950 and you'll be close. The cost of living in paradise... Not really worth it! I probably have $5,000 in shipping for the parts I have had to order for my 67 Camaro.

I boo UPS and Fed Ex!

Most of all I boo companies that either don't ship to Hawaii ( it would surprise you how many there are out there ), or will only ship 1st and 2nd day air.

Here is my last order from Ricks First Gen
It's not much, but shipping was almost $400! WTF? the box's weighed nothing...
What I don't understand is that I shipped a complete Tremec TKO 600 kit from Keisler and it was only $300 to ship. I think some companies rape us on the Handling charges... It's not all shipping!
I should have shipped my car to the mainland, moved there, completed my car and shipped it back to Hawaii... Hahahaha, next time!

I too have gone down the replace every screw routine with my build, I do hope you guys are at least getting 15% to 20% off prices at Ricks. It seems once a month they send me a discount code especially for orders over 250 bucks. Might not seem like a lot but on a 2k order 400 bucks in stuff aint bad. I never order with out it.

They got one going now, discount code - sand
