Best textbook definition for "Pro-Touring."

What is your best definition for "Pro-Touring?"

I'm doing website updates and wanted to integrate a definition but I haven't found a good text blurb online that I feel really encompasses what Pro-Touring is. Most definitions only define it as only muscle cars, or only expensive professionally built race cars with license plates... but Pro-Touring is more than that.

I'm going to be sitting down and writing one that I'll post up but I wanted to hear from other guys that are living the life.

A few quick thoughts....

Pro-Touring:

A style of modifying vehicles mechanically, structurally, and visually for increased performance, comfort, durability, and style with the intention of driving in a wide range of environments.

A style of modifying vehicles with modern electronics, high performance suspensions, engines, and styling with the intention of driving them in environments ranging from street use to high performance competition.

A style of integrating modern electronics, structural modifications, high performance engines, suspensions, wheels, brakes, and styling to create well rounded vehicles with the intention of driving them in conditions ranging from daily street use to high performance competition.

True... but if you don't know where you are... how do you know where you are going? Pro-touring is fluid concept which is likely the reason why there is no "textbook" definition per-se.... I'm just trying to put some words to it that describe it but don't limit it.

This infers that it is applicable to older vehicles since you are putting "modern" touches on things. This also means that eveantually things become outdated and require regular updates to maintain its modern status. In most of our cases, these definiations are probably very accurate since we are predominatly starting with pre 1975 vehicles.

However, if you take a 1990s vehicle which already has strut type suspension with decent geometry and you update it, is it still pro-touring?

Does converting newer 4 banger or 6 cylinder cars to V8 power constitute pro-touring if they already have all the amenities but not the power?

Is there a difference between a "Touring" build vs a "G-machine" build?

There, I feel better now! BTW, just checked ebay and obviously their definition by the cars listed as pt is as follows
1. cut springs
2. TT2 wheels

anything above that is just fluff, a waste of money and really necessary.

True it is "generic but all encompasing." There is a build thread on Lateral-G that is a Volvo... Built for handling, with full custom sheet metal, and an LS transplant if I remember correctly. Can someone who says Pro-Touring is just muscle cars honestly not call that Volvo Pro-Touring?

But you do bring up a good point... if you take a Fox Body or a 90's F-Body and put in a aftermarket suspension, mod the engine and back it with a t56, throw some custom sheetmetal under the hood, and do some subtle body mods why wouldn't that be Pro-Touring... But again there will always be some car built somewhere that someone can argue some point about it being or not being...

The purpose of the exercise was to put together a decent definition, not for the inner circle to aruge about, but for those not quite so educated to get interested and want to learn more.
