I am looking to purchase an exhaust system for my 68 camaro with LS3. I know I want an X pipe and dumps before the rear axle. Any recomendations on what sounds the meanest?

I want my car to scare small children........ Also want to be able to hear the 231/236 cam I have in there.

Thanks:thankyou:

Spintechs would do it.

There's loud and there's obnoxious and everybody has different tastes, tollerance level. Flowmaster drones and I'm not a fan (although Raj's car sounds awesome in vids). Magnaflow have a throaty, muscle car growl and I like 'em. Borlas have that 'i kick a$$' sound IMO. Here's an LS3, x pipe and Borla XR1s:

Most likely a 2.5" or 3".

I just searched YouTube for some Spintechs. Yeah those would definitely make some brown spots in some pants.... Just what Im lookin for

John,
The only thing I would add is to reconsider dumps before the axle. They will make one whale of a mess under the car blowing dust, dirt, and debris everywhere! Just something to think about your car is too nicely detailed to deal with that all the time!

Both good advice!
Heres a video someone posted on Youtube a few years back of my old Mustang with 3" and Spintechs. Sounded cool, but loud!

The most frequently asked question about my car is what mufflers do you have. I've been told it sounds like a cup car by multiple people.
It's definitely not quiet when you're hard on the throttle but tolerable at low rpm and idle.

John I have some 3" Spintechs locally I might be selling if you are interested. Here is what they sound like.

Magnaflows would be my choice. They are tolerable at low RPMs and cruising. You open them up and they are loud. They also have a large selection of custom styles and sizes. They are a good design that doesn't restrict flow or power.

I want something that wont drone on the freeway but sounds evil at idle and when I step on it. I had B&B bullets on my vette and they droned like crazy. Couldnt take the car on long trips and couldnt hear the radio over the drone.

Do the Spintechs drone?

My experience with Magnaflows is on C5 vettes and LS1 camaros. It's been a few years but I don't remember them droning. The Camaro only had a 228/232 cam with full exhaust so it was flowing some air. It was not quiet while cruising like say a Corsa system. It was definitely there but not annoying.

Speaking of Corsa, they have a db line of mufflers that are universal like Magnaflow and others. I honestly haven't heard them but Corsa only has quality products. Might be worth checking out in case you like the sound.

I like to Borlas. All the DSE cars run Borla and after seeing them at the GG autocross events and the OUSCI this year I had to give them a shot.

I personally don't think you're gonna find something that meets all your goals here.

Dumps before axle
No droning
Evil at idle

I think you'll be making some sacrifices, but like a lot of things, evil, quiet, and other descriptors are in the eyes of the beholder.

Personal preference, but this is one of the cleanest sounding motors I've heard that works for track and street. You just need to imagine it with an insulated interior and a "normal" sounding gear box. :D

I believe Brian is running 3" Borla's that side exit in front of the left rear wheel opening. Check his build thread it shows the system.

Exactly, your first problem is dumps. Sound reflects... Regardless of the muffler you will have some resonance.

I wouldnt buy spintech. after having there mufflers rust from inside out in 5 years, they told me that was normal life for there stuff. That didnt sit well with me since it was my daily driver. I switched to magnaflow and will buy that for my camaro as well.

So no dumps anymore if they will make a mess of things. Should I get the 2.5" or 3"?

Here is the cam I have and Id like it to sound like this car....

I dunno if I agree 100% on the dumps blowing crap everywhere. Are you driving on dirt roads? I know I don't. Are you trying to keep your underside pristine? Questions for you to answer.

Anything with a decent power level (500hp+) I would go 3".

Dumps do make a mess of your rear wheels and a black paint job when putting around.

That's going to make good broad power. The downside, to me anyway, is the car will rock in rhythm with that cam. Kind of hard to describe but it's based on my experience with these engines. I can hear it in the lope. It's just something I have noticed with some cammed LSx engines from the beginning as compared to SBC's. I honestly don't know why the engines are more prone to doing that. I think it may be the firing order of the engine or maybe it's the fact that LSx engines can handle a much larger cam and still idle well compared to a typical SBC.

As for diameter, I'd go 3" with 1-7/8" primary headers unless packaging is going to be tight. Then you might look into 2-3/4" pipe. That might be a lot harder to get your hands on.

Don't do dumps if you can. It will probably smell like exhaust inside the car and tailpipes will quiet down the cabin noise alot. Maybe 3" Intermediate pipe to mufflers and 2.5" tailpipes to sneal around the G-link would work.

If you want it to sound similar to that yellow thing, you need to run tailpipes and stainless tubing. Stainless has a thicker sound, but can be a pain in the butt and wallet to set up. the muffler I'd choose to get that sound would be a Borla, but not XR-1s. Borla makes a round, short muffler in 2.5 inch only called an S type. I've ran them on all kinds of stuff and they sound very similar to that pitch on that ls3. Super raspy and ultra nasty at WOT. Be warned though- folks in the next county will hear it when you let it eat. They don't drone at all with tailpipes.

An alternative and my personal favorite is a Dynomax bullet in 2.5 inch with full tailpipes and an x pipe. It's such a deep, scary sound that isn't like anything else on the market. They didn't drone at all, but snapped a lot of necks while cruising a show. Here's just a little LS1 with a TREX and that exact setup:

I have the stainless piping already. Just need the mufflers now so the shop can bend and weld it all up. I need whatever mufflers I chose to be in stainless also.

WSSix
01-29-2013, 07:00 AM
Since you're so undecided, and who wouldn't be, maybe you could have them use clamps on the mufflers instead of welding them. That way if you don't like them or want to try another pair after this initial pair it will be easy to swap out. Just a thought.

People buy both I'm sure.

I've had both the Sportsman XL and the Super Pro Street. I prefer the Super Pro Street. The Sportsman XL was a little quiet for me.

Your results may vary.

You might put some thought into the bends and cut angles the dumps have so they hit the ground more outward at 45* vs vertical at 80*. FMF built some creative tips for the KTM RC8's with a bellypan exhaust that Skip Barber's motorcycle instructors ride at Laguna Seca to defeat the sound station out of turn 5.
