Anyone watching the Barret Jackson auction?
Prices look promising...in the context that people are spending money again...

Just flipped it on. Love watching it and have ever since its been on speed. I find it very entertaining, sure a little unrealistic at times, but heh!?
Lot of great trivia too...love listening to Mangante(spelling?)

For Wednesday prices seem really good. Upgraded cars seem to be holding their own as well if not better than stockers. It will be interesting to see what some of the better cars do over the next couple of days.
I wish Speed / BJ would figure out a better viewing format - maybe split screen or PIP. I understand that they need to sell advertising and engage soft core viewers but you're not seeing a quarter of the cars going across any more.
Regardless - looks like a positive start...
Sharon and I are flying out on Thursday. No agenda, least of all buying cars :) Lots of looking and wishing!

From what I've seen tonight, looks like there is some cool cars this year and the prices are looking good. I've been out there the last four years, but will have to miss it this year. Did I see the Roadster Shop '62 Black Corvette sitting in the main pavilion?

Greg, Charley said he's between money at this point. I talked to him at the Gala... :D
The red Camaro that sold for $110,000 including commissions was bought by a guy I used to work with, who I think owns a Harley dealership now
He got beat out at the last second last year on a similar build.
hehe...looks like you guys are really great at bidding with my money [or lack of]
My wife pulled my bidders card...I just bought her a really clean 31,000 mile67 Chevelle to build for her this fall.
She's thinking AMG Chevelle...I'm liking it!

Yeah - I was pestering him to bid on the Rusty Wallace race car... and that was the same response I got.... I'd like to be as between as he is.
interestingly enough...I had a customer about 8 years ago who built a white mid 30's Bentley with a Viper chassis/drivetrain who "made" me take him some laps on the road course at Putnam Park. Glad he didn't tell me till afterwards he had 800k in it...
BTW...it did not suck to be me that day. Just sayin...

That's the problem with auctions --- especially no reserve auctions --- you can really loose your arse as a seller.

Yep. They used to be reserve, now they just do the reserve stuff on real high end ones. Must be nice to name your price. When u have a well branded product...
The Barrett brochure should read : " sell your car here...sac needed"
I've done it 5 times...lost on the first one, won the rest.

I like it Bret! Especially the "sac needed" part.
My neighbor across the street takes 12 or 13 cars down -- and my buddy Mark Young takes another dozen plus down... they both do just fine. But they're in the business -- they have great "times" -- and they take the right cars.... They might lose on one or two and hit home runs one one or two.
A guy that takes one car down -- is on the wrong day or wrong time - OUCH.
I agree with you on the spectacle. Plus it's in Scottsdale! What's wrong with that?!

Code V1KOM (EX: BB-PW481) testing car. One of two running prototypes and one of only four survivors.
In 1985, Helmut Bott, head of the 959 development, had taken 29 of 1986 model 930 Turbo chassis from the Porsche factory to turn them into the 959 pre-production prototypes and these were called Code F, N and V. These 29 prototypes were the latest prototypes and they were used for various final tests, media coverage, crush tests and road tests.
This car is one of the 7 V-series prototypes and it was used as the chassis, ABS development car which was seen at the famous high speed testing facilities like Nardo, Italy and Minerva, France. Sadly most of the 29 prototype 959s were destroyed and scrapped by the Porsche factory after the 959 project had ended, this particular prototype became one of only four surviving and also one of only two running prototypes in existence still wearing its original pre-production Dunlops with its original prototype light weight wheels. All production 959s were delivered with Bridgestone RE71s with production type wheels. With Porsche factory no-longer releasing any prototype automobiles to the public, this is a very rare chance in owning a prototype Porsche. Not only is it a prototype Porsche, it doesn't get any better than owning the 959 prototype.
**SOLD ON BILL OF SALE ONLY** **BUYER EXPRESSLY ACKNOWLEDGES AND AGREES THAT THIS VEHICLE IS A PROTOTYPE AND IS NOT CERTIFIED TO COMPLY WITH ANY FEDERAL, STATE OR LOCAL LAWS, RULES OR REGULATIONS OR FOR REGISTRATION FOR DRIVING ON PUBLIC ROADS.**
The 959 was so advanced for the time and still no slouch. Cool car.

Lot 1012 - The Tucci built AMBR contender car -- 66K are you kidding me -- there's 40K in paint on that car!
I thought the Willys in general were low... While these are big money cars.. I'm surprised they can't fetch half what they cost to build.
And the Corvettes that used to zoom to 175K are kind of struggling to get to the 100K mark.
1031 - COPO 427 Camaro -- 115K --- I'd have bought that in a heartbeat!
1034 - V code Cuda -- 137K -- that was CLONE money a few years ago!
The interior color of the COPO car might have been the killer? That car looked really good in the pics except for the hood liner and the vomit green interior.

Agree on the interior - but to a COPO collector -- those cars are pretty dang rare.
Sometimes -- and I've been involved with this personally -- there's "rumors" etc about the real provenance of a car... or the stamp pad etc... but of course that's not talked about on TV - but the crowd that knows these cars can be all abuzz about it.
At 115K --- I'd have taken it straight to the upholstery shop and done it in black houndstooth DELUXE interior... and then driven it. :_paranoid

Jeff -- I noticed that too. So as an example without going to an actual sale here -- there's LS motored '69 Camaro's etc going for more than REAL Shelby's... and that seems to me a bit odd. One is faddish -- the other is or was collectible.
I'm also seeing "restorations" going low. '57 Convertibles for 100K and struggling to get there... and '57 T-birds struggling for 100K bids... mind you they're stock restorations but those used to be money cars.
I think in the last 10 years now -- we're seeing the AGING of the stock restoration crowd --- and the coming of age of the "give me a car I can drive and enjoy" crowd?

I think your right on the mark Greg. That crowd is getting older and combined with the parts available now, people are realizing how much more comfortable and fun it is to get in the thing and drive!
A long time customer of mine is a big numbers matching kind of guy(we did his 57 vette) and he just showed up a couple weeks ago with a extremely nice, numbers matching 57 Belair conv. He bought it for $70k, and I was thinking that car might have gone for double that a few years ago.

Think about all the car collectors in the world that Craig Jackson knows personally --- and you don't think he didn't pimp them all on this car (or any other car he owns and wants to sell).... and it wasn't shown that any of them are as excited for the one and only car as he is.
I'd rather have a one of 11 Hemi 'Cuda drop top...
The Green Hornet -- while perhaps a one of one -- was a pretty ugly color combo... and if the big museums wouldn't step up -- who would?

I'm kinda digging the Plymouth. A wheel swap would be in order though.

The components, design, detail, and craftsmanship in that car is incredible IMO.

I can't believe it didn't bring way more money. Especially being a charity car.

Ive noticed that the charity cars arent bringing much money it,is this a change in how tax deductions work or maybe the recovery isnt as good as we thought? Or people just dont feel like giving

That '70 442 Convertible that sold yesterday for $70k had an all aluminum 455 and the W27 alloy 12 bolt under it. Seemed really cheap for a supposed experimental 442. $350k for that one above HAS to be a record or something.
I've only watched 4-5 hours of it this year while working in the garage. I observed every stupid Shelby GT500 ever made trying to make a buck on the legacy, and guys taking baths on mid year vettes with ls motors in them. Gotta give it to BJ in that they do bring some serious metal to the block, but it still gives off a shady vibe to me. Can't stand Mike Joy's general lack of knowledge regarding anything modified and everything being labeled a restomod. I of course will continue to watch it every year and remain critical of it.

There could be an issue with the adjustable ride height system or it was simply left in that position when the photos were shot.

I think it's the choice of cars that have been given away -- AND -- if you notice -- there are several large bidders that aren't stepping up. Ron Pratte was buying everything across the block - he spent MILLIONS at one auction... he doesn't buy diddly anymore.... Last years buyer that spent a few million is missing entirely --- as is the oil field guy from the year before that...
Remember that it takes a bidder against you - to make an auction. You need 3 or 4 of these guys going at it to drive the prices up.
So to me it's a combination of things -- people with the ability seem to be out of action for whatever reason.... the offerings have been kind of lame... because the car still must appeal to a car guy (he just needs to be willing to spend too much for it)... and your assessment of "the economy". Rich people are still quite rich - but are unable to generate the kind of returns they've been used to in this super low interest rate environment. If a guy has 200 million dollars making 8% --- vs 4% --- that's a HUGE difference in pocket money to just blow. This low interest rate has been going on now for like 5 plus years -- and it starts to settle in. Don't forget that people with large net worth also have large expenses... They ain't hurting by any means - but the lack of super sized free cash flow does have an affect - even if it's just mentally.
