View Full Version : American Powertrain
Hello
Im doing a total restoration of my 67 camaro, and it includes among others a new LS3 engine with new transmission and drivetrain.
After considering different suppliers i went for American Powertrain for my transmission package as they seem serious and reliable. They also was the first ones to answer my request for a quote. So far so god.
I transferred the money and sent them a confirmation on this the 15. novemeber 2012. Today almost two months later no transmission has arrived my US adress. I have sent several messages to them but the one and only serious answer i got was that the where waiting for some clevis pins.
I just want to tell everybody this so that people are aware that there can be a huge delivery problem even from the major players.
As i live in norway i calculate 3-4 weeks delivery time just for the shipping over seas, but now the 2 months delivery time just for the shipping within US is really killing my planning.
As a last remark, i also ordered the LS3 engine from Crate Engine Depot at the same time as the tranny, and the engine has been sitting here for weeks now waiting for the tranny.
So thumbs down for American Powertrain this time.

I've read a few stories like this recently about AP. Sorry to see because the initial stories about them were positive. I was a bit bummed when I ordered my T56 Magnum from Summit 2 weeks ago and then saw AP initiating a 10% off sale last week. However, after reading your post, and receiving a tracking number from Summit telling me my transmission will be here late this week or early next week, maybe the extra money I paid is worth it.
Clevis pins? Really? Must be fairly special pins. Hopefully they'll get that sorted out and have your order to you shortly.

I jumped on the 10% off last week myself, but they said I would be put on a list. I don't have a motor yet so I'm in no hurry. I also called Hurst Driveline Conversions and they said they were out of the Magnum T56s, said they sold out during the Holidays.

While every customers' experience is different I just want to weigh in with my experience even though it was awhile back.
Timeline looked like this.
4/27/12 I placed my order sending payment
5/08/12 information was requested because my shipping address was in flux, I expected a wait on the transmission so I had left it that way at time of payment... my fault.
5/11/12 My first delivery came
5/28/12 My final delivery came
I was originally told 4 weeks from time of order.
My salesman was Paul,
Tonya the receptionist,
Josh was in charge of shipping,
I also spoke with the owner whose name is first name is Gray. His last name slips my mind at the moment but he called me personally when he heard that my transmission arrived in a damaged container. He had me run through a few checks for him and send some pictures in case a claim against UPS developed. Fortunately the contents were unharmed.
Based on my experience, I would do business with American Powertrain again.
Thanks for the feedback.
I wasnt in a hurry myself, but after losing 2 months that changed.
I got a new message today, and this time it was the bushings for the tranny crossmember that was missing. So the last message back in desember telling me that the only thing missing was the clevis pinns turned out to be wrong. So the story keeps changing.
What i dont understand is if they knew early that things would drag out, they could ship the major parts first, and send the remaining stuff when they arrivied. I would gladly pay extra for this if they could play ball at a early stage.
My project really takes a beating now, as the enginge and tranny fitment wont take place before late february / early march. Damn.

What car/chassis?
My stuff sits in boxes waiting for me to get my act together. I am not above working with them if it would help you and them, they could restock me easily being in the states. Even if you are across the big pond, that is what FedEx and UPS are for.:D
Technically, I am half Norwegian because both my Grandfathers were each half Norwegian.:unibrow:
You could PM or email me through the board if you desire.

wow Robert, thats a generous offer - Thanks alot. But they promised shipment on this thursday, so it wont make a difference at this point. But relly, thanks for the offer, or "Tusen takk" as they say over here:thumbsup:

Your totally right this order has taken to long. But to clear the air for any overseas shipments we hold the order until all the parts are here or it gets really expensive for shipping and customs.
Who ever told you it was clevis pins that was incorrect it was your hydramax bracket we have been waiting on. We redesigned the brackets so they fit better and it hurt our supply line. Your kit IS shipping this week. The transmission was delayed first then the bracket held it up this last week. And not to mention the holidays but that is not your problem.
The transmissions are slow to arrive sometimes from TREMEC especially this time of year. TREMEC builds the OE transmissions for the new Camaro, Challengers and Caddys with 6-speeds. This is their prime manufacturing run season and at the same time its also the build season for enthusiasts. So it hits right in the middle of our best selling time. This season runs now through usually early April. Hurst and other dealers are also hurt by this supply shortage. TREMEC has to shut down their OE lines to build the aftermarket transmissions. We try to forecast how many we need but they still sometimes can't keep up with demand due to building OE trannys. Not knocking TREMEC but its the nature of the business.
Again I am sorry for the delay and communication from our staff. If you need anything else feel free to drop me a note.

You're very welcome.:D
I saw that in your original post as soon as I posted... so my stuff likely would have fit assuming we bought the same components.
Well, in any case I am glad that they are taking care of you but I am not surprised in the least. I am sorry that you felt it necessary to post a thread with a title such as this one which is what spurred me to comment about the timeliness of my order last year.
Always try to remember that Bad public relations go much farther than good relations... and are much harder for a vendor to come back from.
We as customers expect good service, nobody goes into a transaction expecting to be disappointed or treated poorly.
These days, especially in the car world over promising and under delivering seems all too common for a few vendors which taints the market for everyone... vendors and customers alike.
Thanks Matt for explaining.
And yes, im am also sorry to post a thread like this, but on the other side i felt it was in its place. I was pretty clear in my emails in mid desember that i wanted to be updated on whats was going on with my order, but no update came without me asking for it. So in this world of sharing experiences thru the web both good and bad, i felt like posting this.
But now as I have stired up some negative press, i will also post my positive experiences wich i know will come when the package finally arrives. Also im not finished with the driveline, so Matt, you will have the chance to make things right when the driveshaft is ordered.
Also, I got the topic changed. I may have been a litle to fired up when I started this tread, and it was a litle to sharp for my taste. Things should be fair..

This is exactly the point I am tryng to make with this thread ! I just read this post in the transmission section and my friggin blood started boiling!!! My trans kit was orderd mid October I was told about the TREMEC shortage but it was only a four week delay! After six weeks (emails and phone calls another story)I was told I would have it late December, still no trans! No calls no emails about whats going on, nothing! Point being .Tell me this is ''Tremec's PRIME manufacturing run'' for this time of the season!! AND YOUR NOT SURE WHEN THE TRANSMISSIONS WILL BE DELIVERED!!! For me its that easy!!!!!! It sounds to me like you guys know this happens every year! Knowing this why would you require half the money in my case $4300.00 witch pisses me off even more!!! If you told me it was going to be a few hundred dollars to hold my place in line so when the ''Prime'' season is done I would have a place in line that would work for me also!!!!! So for me I think your responce above is complete BULLSH^T!!! I said what I had to say I done!!!!

I did find out some info on your order. You had the cryo treatment done to your transmission which can take up to an additional month due to the customized process. Each transmission has be disassembled, gears polished and cryo treated. Then reassembled tested and shipped out back to us. I believe Paul was your sales person. He said he contacted you just before Christmas. Paul has been on vacation during the holidays so an order update must have missed you. Paul is going to call you first thing in the morning. If you have any more problems please let me know. I know people had waited up to month on some transmissions but not 3 months. The cryo process is lengthy sometimes. So waiting on trans then when we finally get them it has to go to the cryo process then it adds more time. Again I am sorry for the lack of communication. Our guys do an outstanding job and I will defend them on their efforts. But nobody is perfect and sometimes we drop the ball on communication.

Will it be deemed a mistake if either
A) The cryo holds up to the power and provides long life, smooth positive shift, quality, performance and piece of mind.
or
B) you elect to go through with cancellation and grenade an off the shelf aftermarket trans by exceeding the hp rating.
Just playing devils advocate. You have come this far, hopefully it wraps up smoothly for you Mario.

If you needed a stronger transmission and it had to be sent off by the vendor to be customized to make it stronger, then I can see where it would take longer. My comment about getting my standard T-56 Magnum from Summit along with Greg's comment about doing the same were more directed towards the comments about 'Tremec being slow to deliver to dealers during the busy/holiday season'. Maybe a bigger company like Summit gets transmissions from Tremec in bigger or more frequent batches. Hard to say really. I agree with you though, it can be super frustrating, especially if it's something as basic as a communication issue. I read your Vendors post also and I agree 100%.
With your particular custom transmission order on this thread, I hope AP can get it wrapped up soon and on its way to you pronto. Wishing you good luck with that.

I agree with you though, it can be super frustrating, especially if it's something as basic as a communication issue. I just had it happen to me with something I ordered yesterday morning. Before placing an order on a particular vendor's website, I called and asked them if they had a particular item in stock. They checked and said "yes, and we can ship it to you today if you order now". I said "great, thanks", and immediately placed the order on the website and got a confirmation of the order in my email. Of course the item didn't ship and when I called today they don't have any current info on when it's going to go out and used the excuse "we're in the middle of moving" and they'll "send me an email with the tracking number as soon as it ships". It's complete bull****. I'll cancel my order tomorrow morning if it doesn't go out today and I'll find another part or way to do what I need to do. I'll do that out of principle. I got better things to do than to be told one story before purchasing and then be given another story after purchasing. So I hear you bro!!! Read your Vendors post also. I agree 100%.
With your particular custom transmission order on this thread, I hope AP can get it wrapped up soon and on its way to you pronto. Wishing you good luck with that.

Chris COMMUNICATION!!! thats it plane and simple. I have a small shop and what makes things a lot simpler for me is communiction my customers are updated daily on the statues of there cars they never have to call me about what is going on with there vechicle ever!!! Not saying AP had to call me every day ,but just make me aware of the issues that are going on thats all. I to have to depend on outside sources in my buisness and if they are the ones delaying me my customer is notified ASAP about the delay and why. It saves me so much BS in the end and its so simple. I'll use my thread if need be to comment on this any further.

Has anyone done any tracking of the truck shipment? What has happened to me more times than I can count, is that the item gets to my area but is sitting on a dock waiting for a truck to pick it up and deliver it, especially if it's going residential. Many times I've tracked the item down and it's been sitting 5-10 miles from me for days or even weeks. In those cases I usually go pick it up just to save the wait.

To me after all this , American Powertrain should be tracking this everyday letting Mario know where it is! You shouldn't have to work this hard if at all to spend this kind of money!

ya know i asked them for a bid on what I wanted and they kinda pressured me to buy ???? and said it would ship in about 60 days ??? a little fishy considering standard trans and gear has what I need in stock and can deliver next day and are local just saying ????? said they had to build ??? WHAT ???
emailed back and forth with a couple different guys and they called me tried to tell me price was good only till end of day. I'm not really a price guy well not really. only I buy a lot for customers and all hope you used a credit card Mario ????
I learned a good lesson from AP. Ordered parts from Gray or Grey whatever. He knew everything I needed, so I was told. $1100 dollars later plus all the restocking fees. I ended up with some parts I could not use, some I could. A bell housing for who knows what and a lot of BS from AP. :thankyou:
Never was able to get receipt for the items Gray picked out. Only would give a total cost receipt.
Learned that BBB is not the way to go if you feel you got ripped by a company. Best is to contact Consumer Affairs.
In the end AP thought I was responsible for all restocking fees for agreeing to purchase what Grey said I needed.
Hope things work out for you, I recommend Hurst. They have treated me with honesty and they stand by what they sell. I have gone back to them for few changes and always had professional enteractions with Hurst.

Much appreciated Jody! This is why this is the best community on the net! I guess the reason I am sensitive here is I have referred a couple people there based on their involvement here. I hope they don't get burned after I sent them there. I would feel horrible. :thankyou:

Almost a year ago I bought a kit for my Cuda, I was shipped the wrong bell housing, shipped it back. Received their mustang cross member(part of the package), which doesn't fit, returned it and still have never received my money back. Plus I was shipped the wrong shift handle which too. They have always been very nice every time I called, but since I am waiting till the spring to measure for the driveshaft which they still owe me I am kind of weary about making a big stink. I am not sure if these are intentional or just growing pains of a growing company either way I would not feel comfortable recommending them to others at this time.

I find it unacceptable that this is a site vendor and they have not addressed your issue here on the forum. Matt posted regarding the OP now nothing on your issue. There is no excuse for not keeping the customer informed as to what is going on. Buyer beware with these folks for sure! :headscratch:

I'd pull their sponsor ship like other's have been :poke:

Chad.. Jody has been all over this . I explained to him what was going on and told him if this gets worse I'll ask for more assistence. I pretty much told AMP I no longer wanted to here from them to save them from BS'ing me anymore. As I said before it is what it is I just have to wait! :bang:

Chad I think at the end of the day they are a good company. It was just my turn in the Murphy's law lottery. I had my lawyer (MY NEIGHBOR) look into these guys and its a pretty clean company, really no BS .

Mario,
As you know, yeoman's work by Jody...as always.
And you've got a lot of support community wide here.
Guys I told Jody its not worth lossing a sponsor over one bad deal. At the end of the day I know I'm going to get my trans. It just comes down to communication and the fact that they required half the money up front $4300.00 knowing they didn't have a clue on when the cases were coming in from Tremec. My ''four week's'' have turned into a little over three months! None of this would be a problem if they took a small deposit ,communicated better and didn't lie...

I agree, it takes money to run this site and the sponsors make that possible. I really think they however should be on here addressing this issue. It is great Jody is able and willing to help, but I'm sure he has a lot on his plate too. If they would just handle this with you and on here they would regain the reputation they had. My comments were never meant to have them kicked off of here. I don't think that is necessary, but I think an actual response from them would go a long way at this point.
Your last sentence is how business should be done in general. No ifs ands or buts about it! I guess I should change my practice of recommending shops that I don't have personal experience with just because they are a vendor here. Probably should have done it like that in the beginning. Good luck Mario, I am certainly pulling for you and can't wait to see that beast when it is done!

Sorry for the delay I have been traveling a lot. Mario, your trans is shipping today. Paul has been trying to reach you about it. You received all the other parts. I am sorry about the lack of communication on our part its not our way. We just have been at the mercy of Astro on the cyro process for your trans upgrade. They have been stacked up with orders and it just has taken a long time. Paul spoke to you a few weeks ago and we have been just waiting for them to let us know when it was shipping. They called today and its going out now. I have asked Paul to call you again to discuss.

I think he meant other vendors have been removed here, not that you had been removed from other sites. Thanks for the update Matt.

The first line here pretty much sums up my experience with American Powertrain. I was pushing to get my parts on time and had many wrong shipments. Proactive communication was non-existant from them. If I did not call daily and push them for information I feel like I would still be waiting on my delivery. The most frustrating part was when I talked to my sales guy and he apologized saying the shipping manager was traveling on the Power Tour so they did not know when they would be shipping the correct products to me. Doesn't make you feel too good when you want to complete a car to enjoy the summer and your build is waiting on a vendor who is out playing.
I agree American Powertrain means well as a company but operationally a lot needs to be corrected. Hopefully soon changes are made so they don't completely destroy their reputation like other trans vendors have. In the end I did get a great transmission that I love but a less stressful purchase and better would have been nice.

AP had one last chance to make my deal right and they didn't. I could care less if they ever get there problems taken care of ! They'll never see a penny of my money!! I never had more aggrivation spending $8500.00 in my life. In the end AP will be fine I'm only one person......:popcorn2: Greg Weld said it best ''IF THEY ONLY KNEW'':D

I was under the assumption I would be receiving a full refund.
To date I have not seen one?
Thanks,

I was driving on the same road Mario.
Thankfully I'm only out a few hundred dollars. Time is our most valuable asset and when unethical vendors do not respect the time and schedules of their customer and the shops working on their cars it's extremely disappointing.
I fell for Shafi Keisler's RS600 hype then smelled a rat and got my deposit back. When I went to AP for the shifter I didn't know they were ex-Keisler employees and it didn't take long for me to remember the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
On the up side Hurst Drivelines has been outstanding to deal with. They're not perfect as there has been mistakes but when they've made them they've been close to perfect in customer service. They've given me the benefit of doubt, expedited, comp'd, promptly communicated and honored their words over a year later. Good customer service is obsolutly a two-way street and they've proven themselves time and time again in a professional, polite, courteous and friendly manner. Never a bad vibe.

You said it Seig, mistakes will always happen unfortunately. It's how those mistakes are handled that makes you truly good at what you do in anything. All vendors and any potential ones should see these types of threads as a lesson and not an opportunity to say how hard they work and the customer has no idea what they have to do in a day. Last I checked most of us work for a living which means we KNOW how much there is to do everyday to run a business. Some can do it and some can't! :bang:

Dennis my ordeal is done with these guys. Well not exactly I still have to get my drive shaft, its part of the package.I'm having Troy measure now so I can get it in the next 3-4 months:rolleyes:
The driveline is outsourced. It usually takes 2-5 days.
Got mine from Liberty gear with their internal shift mods. Great product, delivered ontime! Bought the shifter from another vendor and had the driveline done at a local shop. Modded the stock crossmember myself.

I called American Powertrain for a quote on a T56 and bell housing, all the salesman wanted to do was sell me a bunch of other parts I already had, he said he would call me right back with a price, he never called back. I found the best price at Autoplicity, called Summit and they beat it. Had it in 3 days, done. American Powertrain called a month later wondering if I bought a trans yet? You'd think in this economy when you have someone standing there with cash in hand they'd roll out the red carpet.

Here's a tell tale sign. Last week at the Hot Rod and Restoration show in Indy, they had a booth and submitted a product for an innovation award. They won. At the awards ceremony when their name was called, you guessed it, no one was there to accept the award. I don't get it, they seemed like a good group. My friend that bought our other truck ordered a complete T56 Mag kit from them and got everything no problem and got it very quickly. Seems there is potential, but..........:popcorn2:
I said it before and I'll say it again the place is a joke! The Jegs deal is the way to go if doing the off the shelf T-56 !! D&D is doing my nephews 67 GTO T-56 upgraded exactly like mine. I have this one going in my latest project. Taking the old Muncie out putting a off the shelf T-56 in. Jegs had it to me in a week. Helping a good friend of mine with a Nova after this one. Keep up the great service AP!!! Three transmissions since my ordeal! Ah don't worry I'm only one guy....:action-smiley-027:

The most annoying dealer I have ever dealt with. I called once for a t56 quote and told them I'll think about it. They called me multiple times a week for 3 months lol. Kept getting my voicemail and leaving messages etc...

So you called for a quote ......and you were annoyed when they called back with an answer? ...multiple times? I would n't put this in a bad dealer pot...sounds like a poor-manererd customer pot to me. Call them and say no, if thats what you mean.

Exactly what I was thinking. Pretty rude to shame them for following up multiple times in an attempt to service a customer and make a sale.
Was it not an improvement over reports of lacking communication? I call that progress and responsiveness.
:animated_bye_bye_em sponsor section looks cleaned up:thumbsup:
