Nothing would have prevented this outcome except a master cut of switch. It caught fire while they were driving down the road. Clearly, from a major short, likely a battery cable. This is exactly why I installed one on my car shortly before I sold it.

The message was a fact............I'm talking seconds, not minutes. You can't rely on someone else to protect your person or equipment. Even if 3 minutes is achieved that car was still a total loss.

I just had a fire in August and was lucky.

Cause - Negligent packing and protection measures. Metal support rod was not secured or came lose and fell on a battery (not adequately protected) shorted and cause the fire while traveling down the interstate returning from a Canadian race.

We are responsible for protecting our person and property not someone else.
If you under-insure and are dependent on others you better be lucky.

Guys, Scott isn't talking bad about first responders. Unless you happen to be right there, nothing you could have done would have saved that car. His comment was correct. The point was you have to take the precautions yourself because it does take responders time to respond.

I learned an affordable lesson and now have a larger extinguisher and substantially more insurance.

True that they were lucky nobody got hurt but insurance money doesn't cover emotional ties. I've had my car for almost twenty years now and no amount of money is worth losing that history. I've said it before and I'll say it again....I wouldn't take a million bucks for my car.

Pretty scary thought Sieg. When I heard this happened to you I didn't think that it could have been worse but it could have.

I 100% agree we have to be responsible for ourselves.

One thing I do know from 18 years on the job, if you are standing there watching your stuff burn or your family member suffer, that time from the 911 call to me stepping off the engine... hours.

One question.... theo owner was there....why didnt he just give those guys the key to the side door rather than sit there and watch them screw with it for 10 minutes to pry it open?

Not that it matters...the car was toast by then....

I dont care if the firefighter were there in 5 minutes..... nothing was going to save that car once the flames started.....it was all over at that point...

As a first responder, getting there is a big concern. Once the fire is going for anytime, and with us spraying water, it is a totalled car and trailer anyway. Nothing will be "saved". No need to hurry, and get one of my guys hurt.

Not just the keys to side door, he wasn't even making an effort to go unhook the truck? No doubt when he dropped that back door, the car and trailer were goners. Maybe he heard the sirens coming and didn't worry about it? I couldn't just stand there and watch the flames walk up the front of the trailer towards my $60k worth of Dmax dually. I guess I value my big white tow rig more than him.

Ok steal the idea...... Someone needs to offer a kit that has a smoke detector you can stick in the trailer. The alarm speaker is in the truck. You can shut it off (so exhaust fumes don't set it off while loading). Good insurance! Ok Featherlite...are you reading this?

The best option is prevention. Let's come up with some tips and suggestions to make us all safer.

Think about what you put in your trailer/garage in the way of Fuel or flammable items. I try to minimize storing fuel or solvent in my shop or trailer.
If you have a battery for the winch or lights, is it in a battery box with a lid attached?

If you think you are doing good having a standard 2.5 lb fire extinguisher in the trailer, think about this: it provides a 10 second squirt, then it's done!! I up-sized my trailer extinguisher to a 10 BC, but effectiveness is limited to small fires.
You should be carrying another extinguisher in your truck.

You can buy auto-triggering fire extinguishers that can be mounted in the trailer, or garage above the car.

Battery shut offs on trailer and car batteries.
If you do have a fire, don't open the rear door and allow air to get in.

Anyone else have tips or suggestions?

I hope we can take something home frame this tread. It only takes one wrong to cause this and think about the hundreds of variables we have that could cause this on EACH of our cars.

What about our garages? And our sons and daughters that live above them?

I hear a lot of (not all) the contractors I work for moan about sprinklers, the damage from a leak, the expense of install etc, but I ask every one of them, ever been to the burn unit at children's hospital?

And I personally don't do enough in my own garage, I think this afternoon I will do one if not two fire preventative measure.:thumbsup:
