Wow this one nice set up. Very well thought out , reduces weight , clutter , cost efficient and brings your trans and rear to working temp while at idle.
That is some real big boy engineering.

This is going to be the baddest PT car out there period.

Congrats mark

Uhhh...Mark, I have the slightest idea of what you just said as I'm not a racer or track guy. But, I don't understand logic and reasoning...this is just bad a$$. Wow!! :headscratch: :faint: How do you do it...I mean how do you think of this stuff?

...try imagining Garth doing the run down. It worked for me.

I remember reading about the diff cooler. I'd think the plates would be larger and spaced farther apart due to the diff fluid viscosity.

I have followed your previous builds, read your book (loved it for the advice and explanations on why you do it the way you do your builds), and really like the rendering of Hellfire. You prove that good engineering is so beautiful that to me it is art. Yes, there is science in what you do but the result if a work of art. Can't wait to see video of it making runs on a track.

I bet Charley doesn't respond well to challenges... just a guess. :poke:

I love the oil to oil diff cooler, very innovative. What seals the cooler to the rear end housing? Is there a rubber seal or a welded bulkhead type fitting?

I'm relatively new here and just saw this. I remember reading about some of your camaro's in HOT ROD before I could even drive many years ago. Wow have they progressed over the years. They were inspriational then and just as much so now. I really love the factory parts style builds. I wish there was something modern from buick to work into my GN.

I would bet the Dodge would lose every challenge.

The new Z/28 would beat the Challenger in everything but the Dragstrip. I would like to see Mark run Hellfire against the Z/28 like he did with the ZL1 vs. Red Devil. It's really cool that Dodge is building it though. I'm glad to see the horsepower war is alive and well, better than it ever was back in the day.

Mark's new car is cooler than any of them though...

What Casey said!

I wasn't really bashing Mopar for building what is a pretty cool power plant.... I just wish they would buy into some engineering and give us a car that can actually USE that amazing level of power for something other than roasting tires in a straight line.

This is where - to me - GM is so far ahead of the curve... with the AMAZING Corvette platform - and what they're doing with the Camaro line up.

Ford is trying... and showed us the goods with the Laguna... They just haven't taken the next step which would be some serious power AND handling capability. They have the power part down. A little less plastic -- and a little more weight balancing... Funny -- the exact same things they missed out on back in the day.

Not saying people can't MAKE these cars handle -- but it would be nice to see the factory (ala the Z/28 etc) put some effort in a showroom version.

I got Hellfire back from the Dutchboys for my spring car party. The guys from Finspeed also drove the wheels up from Missouri for the party. They are 18 X12 rear and 18 X 10.5 fronts. We will put the Anvil Carbon Fiber front clip on the car after the engine is in the car.

The BFG Rival 335/30R18 is designed to work on a 18 X 12. A 18 X 13 would have been too wide because the Finspeed Mono Blocks come in a 12 or a 13. No 12.5 inch.

Very impressive indeed, every time you build a car I wonder how you will ever top it and somehow you continue to raise the bar.

I would be very curious (if you are willing to share) what your future plans include as I am sure you are already noodling ideas for the next project. Any plans to ever use a full frame or IRS?

Keep up the killer work as it is great inspiration for others.

That carbon fiber under the clear looks incredible. That will definitely help with the design portion of the OUSCI competition. Did you calculate how much weight came off the nose of the car with all the changes you made and the addition of carbon fiber over sheet metal?

Marks latest Camaro has to be the best one to date. Every time the next car comes around he seems to have a better creation bouncing around inside his head. I'm really happy we went with the DX-1 stripe on the car. The day the car came in the shop we started laying out different ideas for stripes. And this one just seemed to fit. Its something you don't see done very often and it really is a nice touch of the carbon without totally over doing it.

A tick more boost via a blueprinted blower and a slightly smaller pulley. Also a very good inlet tube and reworked blower inlet. On the exhaust side we corked it up to simulate full exhaust via flow restrictors. So I think we will clear 950 HP installed without much trouble. We also use 35 C intercooler water to be more real world. With chilled water we can clear a 1000 HP no problem? My only ride in Mayhem was riding shotgun into Optima's SEMA booth. I couldn't believe how docile it was......might as well have been a Prius. Not exactly my ideal idea of a ride in that car though I was very impressed.

Though I guess it could have been GW's mad car control skillz. :sieg:

In sticking with Mark's theme of 'more power + less mass' it is certainly directionally correct.

Some statics of Hellfire engine:
Average TQ from 2100-6800 RPM = 871 #/FT
Average HP from 2100-6800 RPM = 726 HP
Peak TQ: 950
Peak HP: 931

For fair comparison, compared to Mayhem over same range (3900-6800 RPM):
Mayhem Hellfire
AVG TQ 765 847
AVG HP 772 852

More to come - much data to process.....

For those of you who don't know Dave Mikels he is the brains behind my power and success for over 24 years. He did the engine in our FSAE car back in 1990 and 1991. I did the chassis and Dave did the engine. Huh same as now. Dave is also a great driver so we have been a good team for a few years. We were roommates at Rolla, MO

The years I did well at OUSCI it was Dave in my window telling where to pick up time in the Auto-X. Not my best event but I can do when I need to with a good spotter.

So we are at again. I think Dave will get it all sorted out! Looks good so far. I'm going to need more chassis to put all this power down.

Good god!

Is that still a 2.3L blower? 6 bolt heads?

Yes - 'massaged' LS9 2300 supercharger

No - 4 bolt heads - LS7 block / CNC LS9 heads (I think we are near or at the limit for 4-bolt)

Very impressive numbers for a "messaged" 2.3L blower. Is the inlet and outlet for the intercooler bigger than stock? Keeping 1K HP cool must need help...

Gotta love that torque curve. I can see why you are saying you need to get the chassis sorted out. You should be able to put power down anywhere that you can maintain traction. Will make the AutoX and Speed/Stop more interesting.

Time frame on when you'll be able to start your tuning?

I made a lot of progress over the weekend. I got all the parts back to assemble the rear axle. It has a C&R Racing Remmed gears that was run in at C&R axle dyno to make sure the frictional loses are good and it is quite. The housing is a steel Strange Engineer part so I could install the diff cooler. All the Detroit Speed brackets are welded on it. The axle ends are my design that uses the SKF bearing, production C-6 park brake and all C-6 Corvette mounting interfaces. The axle ends are dry due to a GM axle seal in the end of the axle tube in the tube end. The axle shafts are 300 M material that are gun drilled to save a little mass. I was also able to design a park brake cable that interfaces to a '69 Camaro so you can use the stock '69 Camaro park brake system.

From the looks of the 4 gear truetrac, you must be using 31 splines at the diff end of the axle. Even then, it looks like the axle shafts are necked down below the minor diameter of the splines.

Majority opinion says that with the power your motor makes, that you would need 35 spline axles. Does the lack of bending load from the "floater" setup, make that much difference? I guess if you never plan to run a drag slick, the tire is the breaking point. Just wondering why 31 spline, what is the reasoning behind that choice? Does the corvette bearing limit it? Is 300M worth that much? I just went through this with my car (simlar power) and ended up with 35 spline axles and truetrac.

Is the distribution block on the front cross member possible due to the set back of the engine in the car this time or is this the same as Mayhem? Regardless it is both fun and educational to watch you piece together your cars. I really do appreciate the amount of work you do to support this thread while building the car, working full time (at a job that all of us wish we had the knowledge and skill to do), and having a life for you and your new wife.

and/or good memory. :D

Oh yes we are using the DSE Hydraformed rails for brake cooling ducts. I need to be more careful on the pictures I post....

Matt opened up the rail and capped off internally and added a curved piece to turn the air. 18 X 11 wheel no problems lock to lock.

With the Anvil lower front valance it is wide open for brake ducts. We squared off the end of the frame rail and removed all the bumper bracket holes. Then added front duct that pull of the opening in the lower valance.

Now that you guys figured that I can post the rest of the pictures when I find them.

With Carbon Ceramic Brakes you need a lot of air flow to cool the brakes. Especially when you are making 875 HP. They don't have much thermal mass so much the cooling needs to be by air flow.

I'm running the production Corvette ZR-1 CCM brakes with Bosch ABS ECBM. We ran CCMs on Jackass and they work great, just a bit challanging on the track to keep from locking a tire when they are hot. They go up in output as they get hotter.

The OE CSC (Concentric Slave Cylinders) self-adjust as the clutch wears. The "race" stuff needs to be set and as the clutch wears the pickup point moves. Well that is how it was explaned to me by one of the guys who designed this stuff.

So far the pedal efforts for my set up feels great. I bench bled my CSC and my master cylender before I installed them so it worked right are without a bleed.

Thanks for all the useful information!!

The LS9 clutch works great up to about 825 ft*lbs TQ. I was on the edge of capacity of that clutch in Red Devil and Mayhem. If you slipped (Got real hot) the LS9 clutch its high RPM reserve (Not fully releasing) was reduced. You would notice this on WOT 2-3s and 3-4s. The Centerforce will hold 1300 ft*lbs. Per Will Baty at Centerforce it will work fine with the F-body CSC but it will have better life with the GT500 Mustang CSC. It took a bit of digging but I found the GT500 part has less effective piston area so for the same master displacement it should stroke farther at the trade off a bit more pedal effort. I made my own Swedgelok quick disconnects and bench bled the system before I installed it. I'll try to take some pictures tonight. The pedal efforts seem correct to me about 35 lbs. On the high side for an OE application but good for a 957 HP Hot Rod. Statically testing it the pickup point seems correct so far I'm happy with it. Randy Johnson and Chris Smith let me drive there cars and the low speed drivabilty of the DYAD seems good. The true test come at the track.

Love this build. Im assuming that you needed to change the wheel speed sensors when you changed to the Bosch ABS unit.
I think the Bosch unit communicates over the CAN bus with the BCM.
Are you going to take advantage of the traction control?
Did you need to add the interior switches that communicate with the BCM for the different traction control levels?

Looking forward to more updates.

I did not do traction control. The only car I have ever driven that has good Traction Control is the New Z/28. It has a Performance Traction Management system that needs a lot of stuff to work and a ton of development to make it faster than driver’s best effort. On most tracks I'm still just as fast if not faster with PTM off vs it on. I could add Bosch traction control to my set up but in my opion it would not make the car faster just easier to drive. On tracks like the Nürburgring where you do get airborne and light a lot PTM works great.

L3enb4lWmKs

The Bosch system requires the stock Corvette ZR-1 active wheel speed sensors. So that was not a real big deal. It does have a lot more CAN interface and a driver selectable ABS switch. Because Bosch is the supplier for the ABS for both the Z/28 and the ZR-1 they can interface with the Carbon brakes better.

The bottom of the hood is also flat cleared carbon.

Looking forward to seeing them on the car!

Hey Mark.
I think the hubs you had on the car before were 33 spline with the wheel speed sensor for the early style C6 ABS, is that correct?

Gordon thanks for the photo. We drove Hellfire up on the trailer under its own power! The new Centerforce clutch is easy to modulate even sitting on a milk crate. If I would have had a real seat in it I could have cruised the neighborhood to show my new neighbros what a red neck I really am. Just to seal the deal after firing the car at 2 AM.

The car is off to Sled Alley for a week and a half to get the glass and interior done. I have to be out of town on GM business so Matt will keep it moving.

Then the Dutchboys come over on Sept 27 to put the front end on the car and it should be close to driving.

Congratulations on another awesome build. I've been following your builds since the White one lap car in the early 90's. I can't recall the magazine but there was a pic of your car in front of the CPC sign on Vandyke. Talk about a throwback. My last job before I left for Florida I was at the VEC as a Service Engineer for Interior trim.

Anyway I am getting ready to start my build on my DD '87 Caprice and I am wondering if you have made any mods to the trunk floor for fuel pump access, or do you simply service the pumps by dropping the tank? I know some builders/owners do and most don't. I don't mind dropping the tank but if it makes sense I'll consider it.

Thanks

You have to be careful how much you improve in each iteration as you may run out of things to improve but I guess that is what we think every time you build a new car.

With the quality of each build my guess it that the next car has already been conceptualized during this build and will be ironed out after Hellfire has a few days at the track.

Amazing work, you definitely set the bar and inspire everyone in this hobby.

I was at FSAE Michigan Competition last year. I'm the Technical Director for the Cal Poly FSAE team. I talked with an engineer that said he worked with you on the new Z28, in the Vehicle Dynamics Group. He was formally from Purdue, but I don't recall his name. I dove Hellfire for the first time last night. I was over at Sled Alley and they had the interior and all the glass done. I fired it up and took a spin in there industrial park area. These Camaros are all so the same but different. I love the evolution. Firing it up and driving it off is familiar yet different.

My first impressions:

The D&D Tremec T-56 Magnums shifter feels like a gun bolt. Very cool and very precise feeling. D&D took my stock Magnum box apart and tuned it up. Brass sliders and set up the clearances. They did this while they had it apart for the new oil pump.

The DYAD Centerforce clutch feels great. No noise easy to drive OE feeling pedal efforts. Once I get some break in miles I will see how the high RPM reserve is. If it shifts well at 7000 RPM during a WOT 2 – 3 we will have a winner.

The brake feel is great. Nice high hard brake pedal. I used an OE Bosch ZR-1 booster and master to match the ZR-1 brakes. I copied the pedal ratio and the brakes feel just like a ZR-1! The ABS is also Bosch like the ZR-1 so it should all work as designed.

The new Recaro seats feel great. Supportive yet not like a hard shell. Very comfortable.

The engine had wicked throttle response but with over 800 foot pounds by 2000 rpm it should. It idles at 700 RPM with a very small lope. The Borla exhaust has a very deep sound. I had Borla make me some bigger mufflers and resonator. I think it is no louder at idle than a stock Z/28.

The DSE new steering rack has great steering feel. The best yet. For people who notice these things the new DSE racks are tooled and made by DSE. Look at the casting for the DSE logo. All of the other racks are remanufactured Mustang II stuff. I have personally broke one of the remanufactured racks at VIR at speed.

Sled Alley did a great job on the interior. We used all C.A.R.S. parts and the doors sound like a vault when you close them. Just a great thud sound. We used some Dyna Mat and a lot of the lighter Tac Mat. Matt and Paul also put the front clip on the car. Sled Alley and the Dutchboys make a wicked team if you want a straight body.

We finally got to see the car outside on the ground and the paint is stupid nice. The fits, gaps and surfacing is the best yet. The car is very stunning. (Sorry I wanted to get home and forgot to take a picture.) Matt drove the car up and back and it has a unique look on the road. The PPG red is very deep. That against the carbon fiber has a nice look in my opinion.

Bringing it home tonight to finish the last of the wiring. If the weather is not crappy we should get a bunch of miles on it this weekend.

Mark - really enjoyed reading your first drive first impression post. The way you described the components was specific but not to technical.

The pictures of the car so far have been outstanging. Can't wait to see more of the completed car in the sun.

Have I ever told you how much we appreiciate you Gordon?

Mark, its a master piece. I love the execution and fitment. Sled alley hit it out and them Dutchboys nailed the body work.

Love the front bumper no bumper looking valance.
