View Full Version : started back on my new old project... long

Alright everyone after lurking here for a few years I figured I would jump on and share my build
I have owned this car for about 21 years now and initially bought it to pro-street it since that was "in" and I had a friend that had one a few years earlier. After tech school and moved back to Eugene, Or.I bought the chevelle I drove it as is and moved to Nor-Cal. about a year later, I started to get into bracket racing it at our local track (samoa dragstrip)and had a blast with it.
Like most of us life has a way of changing priorities so the car was put on hold, while buying a house and building other projects and starting a family. I had been building my El Camino and sent it off to paint a few years ago and discovered what "paint jail" was all about. I found a paint shop in Eugene that a friend of mine uses, and after talking to the owner I decided the trip would be worth it.
After looking over the car and getting a plan it all went out the window.......:willy: I will try to keep this thing updated as I get time.....
here is the car shortly after I bought it. Taken Sept.1992 one of the guys at a local chassis shop called it the "calico"......

After buying a house the car just kinda sat. I tore it down and was going to paint it and get back to some racing but the budget just wouldnt allow it. I started to do other projects that were going to be a little more economical. yeah right........This was my first paint job and frame off build in driveway late 90's early 2000's I entered some shows and won, then the car show thing hooked me.
http://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/rebeccamhull/fortunaautorama2000.jpg
The El camino project taught me a lot of things, 1.hard as I try I cant do it all. 2. its harder now to get friends together to do some of the projects when you have a family. 3. I am learning my limits, and capability. If I want something done in a reasonable time frame it may be faster, better if I send it out. I spent many nights for months in the garage after putting my little one to bed and was worn out by the time I got the car done

I put the chevelle in storage for a few years to make room for working on my house and the out of control el camino project. I decided that it was time last year to just get this thing done and over with.
It really looked bad.
http://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/rebeccamhull/054.jpg
My wife agreed to get this thing done as well. So we loaded it up and took it back up to Eugene to Precision Classics and Collision. After going over it with the owner he and I discussed plans and ideas that I had.
http://i594.photobucket.com/albums/tt22/rebeccamhull/032-1.jpg
I wanted to box the frame and put some killer suspension under it. I was for sure set on some form of LS engine and a 6 speed.
Wissing72
12-16-2012, 02:40 PM
We agreed to get the frame out from under it and soda blast the car since it was torn down anyways and see what kind of mess we had gotten ourselves into.

I knew going into this thing that there was going to be a bit of metal needing replacement. A quarter and rear filler were all the body needed and the fenders were beat up from prior repairs....

After getting into the bodywork, the frame was looked over and measured etc. It wasn't too bad but will need some work. The idea came to mind that if I am boxing the frame and adding all of the suspension, what is the pro's and con's of just setting it aside and putting an after market chassis under it. I started looking into them and reading what others have done and gone through modding the original chassis. Keeping in mind that the work to do one is labor intensive and the other is more of a bolt in (though not totally). What to do.
We decided the way to go was with an after market chassis, so we called Roadster Shop and had one sent out to us. Man that thing is a work of art! This car is going to go way beyond what I ever thought it would be, I had only dreamed about this.

Hell yea now you're cooking with gas.....
What are you doing for a drivetrain? Another big block or something else?:_paranoid
The body looks like a pretty good starting point.

I have a couple of big blocks that I considered, and the small block that came out of it but I decided to go with an LS and a 6 speed

The body was pretty good, it was somewhat preserved by being in storage and torn down for 15 years :faint:

thanks! I am done with messing around I want the car done. I have spent sooo many years on other projects and I get burned out and start back on them etc. I am glad there is enough aftermarket support out there now for these cars. I have been collecting stuff for years that I can now use and/or get rid of.

I hope the car turns out as well as the frame!
Haha I have had this car for sooo long people used to say "whats a chevelle" is that like a camaro? grrrr.
I think most of the camaro's got picked up by guys like Stielow (j/k mark)
Mine is a true 70 as well.....:D
oh man, I get so tired of people asking about my car and "is it done?" I've only had mine about 10 years and its been non-op for about 6 now as I rebuild it. hopefully next summer it will run.

I used to get the same thing. I would be telling people that I am working on this or that and they would just roll their eyes and move on. I finished up my el camino last summer and everyone went :wow:

Same here on the "...is it done" questions. My buddies will always ask, "Maaan, you're still working on that car?" They don't have a clue of what it takes to do a car right and give it, its proper due diligence.
Not to mention school, work, moving 2.5hrs from where your car is kept for 2 years etc.....
Funny thing is one of my good buddies just texted me this morning "I don't think your car will be done until 2023...." oh well. It'll happen when it happens.
back to the car at hand, any more pics?

Here's some more updates for you.... with having the Roadster Shop chassis comes having narrower frame rails. We get to stretch the inner wheel wells a little!
The down side is finding wheels, wholly !@#* the manufacturers are proud of them things!!!!:wow:
The idea was to keep the back seat in the car so that we can have our little one go on some drives with us so the rear seat is starting to be modified as well.
We cut the tunnel out and reworked it to avoid clearance issues as well.

Just throwing it out there, if anybody needs a stock frame that is a roller with discs and a 12 bolt 4.10 posi there I would like to see it go to a good home. It is in Eugene, Or. Do not want to part it out.

not alot to update. there has been some discrepancies and the car has been held up in certain areas for a couple of months due to outside vendors. :faint:
It looks like the issue is solved and now the fitting of the body to the chassis can continue. I am pleased with this shop so far, the owner has kept notes and photos and keeps ME updated with progress or issues. I like that. :hail:

Alright guys I figured I would pop up and post an update. It has been a couple of months. Things have been a bit crazy to say the least in the family world. I think things have settled down and can get back to some normal business.
Precision Classics is still going to town on the car. Bodywork is getting close, panels are aligned and they are ready to pull the body back off the frame and hopefully some color will start to go on real soon. I am getting anxious to see this car and get back behind the wheel again!

For sure with the "Photobucket" issue! Dont know why it dropped them but has done it on another site as well.:headscratch: :computer:
No real rendering done. looked at a lot of pics on the internet for good and bad ideas and to see if the colors look better on a car or not. Going to do something different with stripes since the car is "far" from factory, but still keep it somewhat clean. Nothing wild/off the wall. I am thinking more towards a sage type color. I see some newer cars with nice shades. I have had reds, black, yellow etc.

Yeah I like that big girl! She works. LOL.
Not a lot to update on just the metal working stuff and small things to get it all fitted together correctly. Getting the interior fitted and mocked up as well. It seems like when ever it is ready to come back apart there is something else that needs attention. Thats good, but I am ready to see some color on this thing. For what ever reason the sage colors came to me and I liked them. I guess since I have had so many other colors this one was different.
Here is a couple of photos that will probably end up "disappearing" like some of the others..... Ugh.

I'd keep the door locks as well. You can always remove the outside cylinder and go with remote locks but I'd keep some sort of way to physically lock the car up.

Thanks for the input guys. The more I look at it I will probably keep them. I got rid of the locks on the El Camino since on those cars they are below a sharp body line and it cleaned it up nicely. I have a manual cable to unlock the car if need be.

I understand what your saying, I do ask opinions just to guide me. I have a tendency to over think things and get "lost" sometimes. Plus I can't seem to keep up with the changes in the aftermarket, where someone may know something that is a better idea than what I had originally. I already have a car that has no locks and like it. Just not sure I want to do it again or not. It is more about aesthetics than anything.
Thanks for the props. And yes you just said that..... The 69 camaro guys have you in the cross-hairs! LOL

Figured I would throw up a couple of updates since it has been a while. Life has been a little bit crazy lately. It is amazing how time flies, I cant beleive the year is coming to a close. I have a feeling that it's not going to slow down either...
The chassis in now painted and going together. It is almost a shame to cover it with a body!! This thing is a work of art

It's all good, I don't have much time to keep this thread exciting. The balancing act of family, work, etc. Takes up alot of time. I wouldn't be able to get the car done if it wasn't at a shop. I learned that lesson when I built the El Camino our son was about a year old when the paint went on, left very little time and less sleep to get the car done. Now our second little one will arrive in late Nov.

I have been running like mad here lately. My wife and I are expecting our second little one in about 3 weeks, but we got a chance to get up north and check on the progress of the Chevelle.:excited: :excited:
I am very impressed with how it is coming along. I have given the owner some ideas and he has done a great job of listening and bringing this car to life. He has some serious talent. He has also been very on top of calling me or e-mailing me to bounce ideas or suggestions. He has kept progress photos coming as well, being 300 miles away those things are important. Several times I have called and he answers the phone or will call right back. I would recomend if your in the pacific north west area and looking for a shop, stop in and look around.
Now to some photos....

Thank you for all of the compliments everyone. A little nervous on unveiling it. To answer the big question about the wheels. They are just "rollers". Don't worry. I am hunting and narrowing down the wheel selection. The rear end is a narrowed 9 inch and it is mini tubbed.
The color is a green/greyish. It is called Mystic Green.
We are just waiting on the interior panels and the material from The Shop LLC, so that Jon Lind can get moving on the seats, headliner, etc. and assemble the rest of the interior. I think next week is wiring up the car. I can't wait to hear this thing run!
I really have to give it to the guys up there, they are nailing this car as far as what I had visioned then went beyond. The time frame has been extremely reasonable. They keep the updates consistant. I was sketchy about taking my car 6 hours away, but they have made it very comfortable.

Bill, Marcus hit the nail on the head. The inner wheel houses were pulled, split and about a 3" piece of metal was welded in. Put it all back together and modify a couple of trunk supports. I am using Eddie Motorsport trunk hinges instead of the stock set up and it took a little more modification. They told me it wasn't too bad to do though.
any pictures of that process? I am about to start on that on mine. I havent seen anyone actually post pictures.

Bill, I don't at this moment. I will call the body shop and see if they do. I saw that that t.v. show Musclecar on Spike is doing a 442 and did the same process.
In short, if you look at the tubs from the trunk you would cut the inner tub where the 2 are welded together in the center drill out the spot welds at the trunk, remove amount of metal from floor, install tub, and fill center of tub with new metal. This is a short version and there is more to it than that, but I am at work... :shakehead:
I am sure someone will chime in about it since most of the cars here have had it done to some extent. Try a search as well, and I will try to get more info and some pics if I can.
Hope these come through. I found these on the post from Ironworks Chevelle build. We didn't remove the back panel the way they did. Hope they don't mind that I pass the pics along.

Last year my wife and I bought a new house, it had a seperate shop out back but was unfinished. I finally got started on it a couple months back. I finished up some electrical and ran copper air line through out and insulated it. Now just finishing up sheetrock. I am thinking I will look for a hoist in the next year or so as well since it has 12' ceiling. Its 42x20. I wish it was wider but I will have to work with what it is. Trying to get it finished before the Chevelle comes home. I am thinking after getting back from Barrett-Jackson I will be able to finish it.

I don't understand the layout of the shop. Is it 42 wide and 20 deep? One single garage door? Or is there another door from where you're taking the pics?
I used to do everything in a 40 deep by 22 wide "4 car" garage.... I'd do my projects in the winter -- everything parked outside or in the trailer (or temporary storage) and put the car up in the center of that space so I could work all around it. It took some effort but I'd get 'er done!
Nice space to have that's for sure!!

Greg, its 42' deep and 20' wide. There is a 14'wide main door on the front (I was standing in the door way when I took the pic) At the back and to the right there is a smaller 10'wide door and at the back left there is a bathroom. The part that I don't like but is required are the "wing walls" and California code requires that every 25' the building "boxes" so with the width that I have they get in the way but I will try to put them to use. The previous owner built it as a boat/r.v. garage.
I will probably do the same as what you said and put the car in the trailer when I am working on other projects. Of course with 2 little ones it will probably be turning into bicycles and motorcycles soon.:D

Oh yeah! That's a great looking shop!
And yes to the "bikes and stuff" from kids.... but that's just life and is actually more important.
Even to this day -- I utilize the ceiling for storage space -- stuff I rarely used gets hauled up on braided steel wire rope..... and stashed up high and out of the way. That's easier in my all metal framed building but can still safely be done in yours too. I use a lot of my old boat tricks for hauling and securing... and the lighter stuff gets hauled up on high quality boat lines and blocks etc then just secured just like on a boat. Need the stuff down -- just 'unfurl' it.... or hoist it aloft! HAHAHAHAHA
I've also found these cheap ($125?) electric (110V) HOISTS at Harbor freight that I use for sky storage for like my hydraulic wheel dollies and stuff... very handy!

Some good ideas thank you, I am thinking about putting a shelf about 10' high along one wall that will hold plastic "totes" for all of the parts and stuff that I don't use. The larger and heavier stuff can go on racks, and I also have other storage in a basement too. It will keep it up high enough and out of the way while keeping wall space open as well.

Now that we have set a deadline for the car, it seems as if things just try to come apart... Precision Classics sent off parts for plating, and go figure they come back looking like A$$! They got sent back for a re-do, so we will see. I hope I dont have to search out a different plating company but if I do anybody have one that can do a GREAT job? Prefer west coast, but will entertain shipping out somewhere.
Thanks!

Well the car is moving along. It is getting the interior done at this point. We have been struggling getting some of the parts in that are needed to finish the project.:drowninga: We had a couple of shows that we set a goal for and pre registered for. :confused18: :drowninga: Not sure if we will make the goals or not. Still seems like there is alot to do. Eron and the crew at Precision Classics are going to fight all the way to get it done thats for sure.
Here is a couple of photos of the interior panels, as it comes together I will post more.

Thanks guys!! I really appreciate it. It has been a long road to get to this point, owning this car for over 2 decades and some of the memories etc. I always dreamed of getting it to this point. I never thought I would see it get it there. I am happy to have my family be a part of it. My boys are still young and don't get it totally yet. If it wasn't for Precision Classics doing this car I think they would be out of college by the time it was done.
When I used to drag race this car my Mom would watch every weekend and help out with e.t. for me and my friends. She always wanted to see the car done to this point. She passed away last year, and won't physically see it but I am sure she knows.
Enough history. Thanks.
One thing about the interior, I wanted to go a different route with this thing. Yes it is expensive, but I couldn't see doing custom seats, door panels etc and not do the dash. The package is not bad price wise if you consider what a full interior actually costs. Seats, carpet, headliner are still being done and we are making changes to what we have.
Ok now some photos.....
The headliner finished up by Jon Lind interiors(Precision Classics did the Aluminum inserts)

Thanks Marcus, if I remember they are 20x13 in rear and 19x9 or 10" in front. We had some back and forth on dimensions and the scramble to get the car done I am slipping in the memory dept. LOL. The tires are 345rear and 275 in the front. You nailed it a while back when I asked you about wheels and tires and your comment about the price was "higher than a giraffe pu$$y" That still busts me up!!
