Am I remembering correctly that Mark Stielow mini-tubbed a red 65 Chevelle and narrowed the rear sway bar and re-welded it? Im just wondering how that held up. I would think welding on a sway bar could be sketchy but Im in a situation where I might need to try it on my G-body where I narrowed the rear frame rails. I tried to pm Mark but that didnt work out so does anybody know anything about this? ..FYI, I have a brand new DSE tubular bar i'd like to use.

It was a 64, but I didn't hear he welded it. I thought it was a Hotchkis bar, but John may have custom bent one for him, since they're good friends.

He may have, I just don't remember him telling me that. I found some old articles on the net, but couldn't find the one that said how the bar was modded, or if it was custom bent. I'll ask him.

Jody - you didn't run a CarFax on it? Pretty sure they would have caught that modification........... Hah
I see where this mod is referenced in this forum as well (from 2001). I can't seem to find the PHR article either.

I saw the same link. I sent him an email, we'll find out what he did.

Here's Marks reply:
I think I cut 2 inches a side of the sway bar. Welded it up then annealled (sp?) with a torch. Heat until dull orange then let air cool. It is not the best way but it works.
Mark Stielow
I believe the articles said it was a hollow bar front and rear.

Thanks for getting response for me. Geez what rocksatar status he has Lol. Hopefully he could chime in with some detail when he gets a chance. The annealing part was helpful! It would also help me to know what filler metal to use during the weld process, dont know if it should be something special or if the typical E70S mild steel wire would suit??

he knows the proper de gassing process for jb weld, which makes it stronger and lighter than any titanium alloy :lol:I kinda figured there was more too it than just slapin some JB weld around the joint.:willy:
