View Full Version : 1965 Fastback with DSE
We will be installing DSE mini tubs, subframe connectors, front and rear suspension in this 1965 Fastback.
This is what we are starting with.

The first step is to remove the undercoating before it goes to get media blasted. I have never seen so much undercoating.

Love that body style. What's the owner going with for a drivetrain?
Don't let Matt near it.

Subscribing... I plan on using the DSE front and rear systems in my 66 GT fastback, so I'm really interested in seeing the installation detail.

Not sure about the drivetrain yet and Matt hasn't seen it.
There was a lot of bubbles and paint coming off so I decided to investigate before sending it to be blasted.

Ha you guys always seem to end up with projects that have to be done the hard way.
We have repairs to do before we install the DSE mini tubbs.
The front crossmember had been hit so we replaced it
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/Nicks%201965%20Fastback%20Mustang/31.jpg
Before we installed the new one Brian cleaned up the surface rust than brushed a coat of SPI epoxy

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/Nicks%201965%20Fastback%20Mustang/36.jpg
The left front apron has a little rust so Brian cut it out

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/Nicks%201965%20Fastback%20Mustang/41.jpg
There was also a little rust on the firewall. After drilling out the spot welds on the fender apron Brian patched it.

Both quarter panels need to be replaced.

After they were removed everything was epoxy primed

Brian wanted to fit the mini tubs before installing the quarter panels the first thing he did was cut out the frame rail to make room for the new one that come in the kit.

These braces come with the kit
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/rusty428cj/Nicks%201965%20Fastback%20Mustang/65.jpg
This is what needs to be cut out for the new mini tub. You can go in 2" or 3" we chose 2" because in you go 3" you have to narrow the supplied frame rail 1"

When you epoxy prime the inside of the quarter panels and such, do you consider that good enough protection or do you plan on those surfaces eventually receiving another top coat as well ?
Maybe a dumb question, but I'm not sure how accessible some of those areas are whne you are ready for top coat.

How is this build compared time wise to the Dynacorn body build ?

That's why we epoxy prime it is better than the e coat.
We will prime again and paint whatever color the owner wants.

You can't compare the two. Different type of builds.
The rear end from DSE came in with the Quadra link brackets. Moser 9" 3.89 with 31 spline Truetrac

Great job on the build. Quick question on the rear end. Is it the same flange to flange width as a stock 65/66 (57.25")? It looks narrowed, and I imagine it has to be so the wheel and tire combo look good. Thanks in advance.

Beautiful build Rusty. I am definitely subscribed to this one as I too am building a 65 FB with the DSE minitubs. I'll have to start a thread on the build as we're already past the install.
Brian wanted something fun to work on so he started installing the DSE rear suspension. Part of the trunk floor has to be cut out.

We had a problem with the original fiberglass hood and front valance so we ordered replacements from NPD. The hood required a little work but the front valance fit great and it was a Dynacorn part.
The hood had a low spot in the back and the front corners needed a little fiberglass added to match our front fenders

Rusty, where did you get those shock tower panels? Or did you made them.
I have installed the same stuff to '69 fastback, exept I did long route with mini tubs. Did 3" wide but I moved rear rails complete 3" in. Add 2" strip to trunk floor both sides.
What engine are you using? We have a 5.4 SC Modular and that is tight fit. No room for headers. 1" from dse upper coil over mount.
I will start buildthread one day when customer says go. Still under radar..

Shock tower panels came with the DSE suspension. Not sure what engine will be used. Our job was the rust repair, paint, install DSE suspension and make it a roller and he will pick it up.

With the frame rail replacement you used two piece not one? Would it have been better to make out of one? I ask because I'm in a similar situation with my fastback, I have a DSE Aluma-frame also. Any suggestions?
Thanks
