Hey -
Can you guys give me some opinions on which hood you prefer for this car. The only caveat is that if I use a 400 hood, it will have to be one of those "Super 400 hoods" from Spottsperformance.
Which one do you guys like better ?
Thanks a bunch. I really value your opinions. :)

Bottom one, its more unique to pontiac. That Cowl Induction hood on the top one is gigantic.

C. none of the above

I have always wanted to see a firebird hood with cowl induction that looks like the stock hood just a little higher to make it functional. If not that then the second one. SWEET renderings by the way!!!

Thanks for all of your responses. There are always so many variations when building a car, so it is nice to know what the people that actually do PT think.

I'm with the majority on this one. I didn't much care for the L-88 hood on this car. I might try a standard cowl or a stinger if Bruce is interested though!

Is that suppose to be a '69 GTO nose on a '69 Firebird?

I would go with the bottom one, but I prefer the T/A hood which is not one of your options.

What about a Shaker hood from either a Gen 2 Firebird or Cuda?

Larry Noble did that with a 1968 bird and it looked good. My problem is that I have a Hogan sheet metal intake that is quite long so I need a hood that has a longer strip of high clearance to go over it.

In the majority, bottom one hands down

Top one doesn't seem to match the car, whereas the bottom one blends in with the lines of the car much better.

AHHH....Gotcha! Are you looking for an off-the-shelf hood or are you open to fabbing something up? It could be an elongated version of a shaker hood, sort of like a cross between a shaker and cowl induction. Come to think of it, what about buying one of those patch cowl induction units and integrating it into the lower portion of a long air cleaner rather than the hood itself? You'd probably have to strengthen the underside of the hood since there'll be a big hole in it. Just thinking out loud. :)

Could have the intake just stick through the hood with some menacing looking velocity stacks. Alright, I need to stop brainstorming now....this is why I can never get to sleep. :D

Thanks for all of your ideas. Very creative mind. Part of the final decision will come down to time to completion. Schedule is getting VERY tight.

An idea that another member gave me:

My car originally came with the factory hood tach. If I moved it over to the new hood, it could not be the primary tach, since the whole instrument cluster is an integrated system (Autometer Nexus), but it would keep it in the Pontiac theme. That's a cool suggestion.

Hey Guys, what do you think about putting the factory hood tach on ?

hood tach pod is a yes, but maybe use a different gauge in it... like boost or fuel pressure or ??

I like the hood tach idea, but I don't think it would look good with the bottom pic(which I chose as the better of the two pics)

I think that the tach(or whatever you use for a guage) would diminish the overall look and lines of the hood. Just my opinion though. If it doesn't serve a function, you don't need it :unibrow:

I am re-using the factory rear spoiler that I have. It's in good condition. The car was orginally a 400 HO so it came with quite a few goodies.

Hey Mike -
Sorry I missed responding to your post. The grille is a combination of 68 Firebird and GTO. The lower valence panel, cowl and chin spoiler are one piece of carbon fiber. If we have time we are going to convert the modified 68 bumper to carbon fiber also.

A factory Trans -Am spoiler would set that car off. To the moon Alice.....

I love spending other peoples money.

Do they make one narrow enought to fit the '68 and if so, who makes it ?

I don't have an answer to your question. Check www.ponitaczone.com. They have a Firebird forum section listed. How are the 68 hidden headlight search going?

At this point we have taken two sets of Firebird Grilles (I already had one) and grafted them together. I feel that they will be too weak, so I am going to take the list you gave me and contact those people. Thanks again for sharing your experience/knowledge.

Here are some new pics of the Freebird engine at Nelson Racing Engines.

We are going to run two different setups:

Street (91-93 octane) Low Boost, 83 lb/hr injectors, A1000 pump with Eliminator kicked on if needed. Devil's Own Alc/H20 injection.

Race (Race Gas) High Boost, 160 lb/hr injectors, A1000 & TEC3 controlled Eliminator.

Thanks.

Thanks for all your feedback and comments. We're pretty happy with the engine combo. We were running it in the dyno room with open headers. Nothing like the sound of a screamin' V8. :D

Is it too late to throw another vote in for the one on the bottom? Add the hood tack bubble as well, but I like the idea of switching the gauge to a boost gauge or soemthing a little different.

Wicked car by the way.

Hey Guys -

Yeah, I went with the bottom hood, but it is 1-1/2" taller for clearance. They are working on finishing the inside with the Carbon Fiber. Getting closer. I am bringing it over to Frank's (Prodigy) this weekend. His buddy is going to make some custom interior panels for it that will clear the rollcage. Debating whether to cover in material or leave Carbon Fiber.

Keep the firebird look don't make it a camaro. What a bout a version of the 69 TA hood graftted to your earlier 1st gen That hood was slightly taller starting at the front with two large square scoops. Could look more subtle even if you had to raise it a bit.

Speedster
08-31-2007, 02:37 PM
It is definitely a Firebird 400 hood, just raised up in the middle for clearance. Got one of the "good" t/A wings from Frank for the back.
