The itch is back. I'm ready to start looking for a complete car with a decent paint job. I'd prefer a SW car but would consider further if it's not a rust bucket. Budget is under 20k.

I figured I'd let the hounds loose and pick something up when the right car comes along for my next project. I'll make it worth your while if you point me in the right direction.

Theres a couple that I know of that are rust free clean rollers you can pick up on the cheap side, then there are a few in your price range running and driving but have been painted and be a little over 20k but can guarantee to be excelent running/driving complete cars if you interested. The rollers your looking at 3-6k

What level of base are you looking for......one that's been frame-off or one that needs to be? Lightly, medium, or heavily modded? I'm guessing either it's going to ground zero with heavy emphasis on track performance and a few more amenities than Brian's?

In an ideal world, I'm looking for a car with decent paint and a fairly clean bottom side. I want to modify it from that platform on a budget. This car will be nothing like my last car or Brians. It will be a bolt on car with performance being my number 1 priority. I don't give a crap about billet hood hinges, subwoofers, AC, tail lights, perfect paint, leather seats, etc...:unibrow: It will be a warrior with the purpose to go fast reliably with the least amount of maintenence possible.

Yep, no nonsense and as light weight as possible. Still may end up with a small block depending on the car. Composites would be great but won't be in the intial plan due to cost. I'm trying to do this and get myself in a financial position similar to you around the same age.

Todd,

Overspray goes everywhere. You can tape it up and still get it on the undercarriage. Although, I suspect that there is lot of rust under those panels.

Jeff

It just looks sloppy to me and I agree on the undercarriage. Seems like it's been covered up. Now, I don't expect perfection in this price range but I do want a solid car.

How is he half way there? There is not one photo of the body at all. No dash, trunk floor is gone. Notice the concrete. Lexan windows would have to be replaced with glass.

Ever price out a cage install? As far as looking at the body he has plenty of buds up here to take a look. If the body is rust free and the paint is good at that price he is ahead of the game. Lexan is a bonus ;)

Todd,

I'm going to offer a different perspective, one you've probably already considered, but I'm sometimes a master at stating the obvious... :)

Have you considered that achieving your goal stated above that the 2nd gen platform may not be your best choice, especially given your desired price range? Are you absolutely set on doing this with an older musclecar instead of considering a newer platform? If 'yes' because of wanting to participate in GoodGuys or other similar type events, then I completely understand...

Understand that these thoughts are coming from a second gen lover... :) But being very honest about the planned use of the car, you could buy an 02-04 Z06 for around your price range and have a heck of a lot better platform from which to build a performance car (if you shop around, you may even find one with track mods, although at likely a little higher price point). I know, it's not a musclecar, and it's not as cool to run fast in a newer car, but unless you are Mark Steilow, or having a car built at one of the high-end builders, you'll likely never get close to the performance with a low-budget / bolt-on second gen.

I've struggled with this same decision: to buy a newer platform and just drive it vs. buying a musclecar and have to keep adding parts to tweak it. It's a decision that I'm still rethinking given my current situation of not having a place to work on the car (your situation is different).

I know it's somewhat sacrilege to suggest the above here on Lat-G, but it really is something to consider...

Good luck either way you go!

Trust me, I understand the love of musclecars. I wish I had the time, skill, and budget of some of the big guys that play in this space. It's exactly what I would ultimately love to do with my own toys...

Between my father and I, we've owned several 69's and 70-73's, and I agree that I prefer the latter also. It's hard to go wrong with any choice, as long as you enjoy it and have fun with it. Just make sure you are as realistic as you can be with all of your goals up front.

I'm not sure I really see why you would start with a 20k painted restored car. Your going to have to mod the body to really get it to do anything. A really nice shell with a cheap paint job later on makes more sense both cost and warrior wise.

But if your buying a painted car I would want and older paint job so the sins that lie beneath the surface will have made their way to the top in a bubble or crack already.

In your shoes (I'm not) I'd get as nice a restored car as you can with as little specialty motor/suspension/brakes as possible, unless the perfectly modded car came along at the right price.

There's something to be said for a car that's got a documented history of rust repair, paint done/clean bottom, all the niggly stuff that you would otherwise have to purchase. Mod as you see fit and do BOS/Payback style refresh when you're ready to move it.
