And all the many, many other busy I shops I can not fit in the subject line!
I always wonder what all the shops & t.v shows for that matter, do with all the take off parts ? it seems like alot of stuff is still good or useful maybe to someone else, now I know some stuff is just plain worn out and I would think goes into the metal recycle bin, I am wondering about good useful parts or parts that maybe a person could use to do a stock restoration, also motors maybe that were recently new and now the customer is doing an LS conversion.
I will use the Roadster shop as an example because they have multiple projects going on and I see some pics of some car's that they post as the starter project and its like wow that thing looks good the way it is and they are doing a full rebuild, what do you do with what they call "old stuff" ?
Do shops eBay the stuff? do the customer's come and take it back? or does it get recycled at least and how do you keep track of all that stuff in a busy shop? specially if the customer wants to know what was sold or taken off
Thanks for answering my curiousity

I have no inside knowledge, but my guess would be that they Ebay it all.

Your answer is in your writing, all of the above. Only speaking from own involvement in my past shop but some will have the shop take care of the old items (sell to help with the bill) some don't care what is done with the old parts. Some want their old parts back, and some parts are just junk, old worn out. I'm sure Phil and RS are not taking any good big blocks to the scrap yard but I guess you never know.

If you are thinking of you want to buy some of what you see, most projects you see posted by the busier shop are way farther along then what the pictures show, so those parts are most likely long gone as shop space is at a very big premium. Hope this helps with your question!

Most of the time the parts get sold, scrapped or returned to the customer. Sometimes they wind up being put out back or in storage for the every 5 year swap meet trip. Most customers really don't have the space nor interest to take home some of the parts left over.

EX - when we tore apart the LS6 Chevelle I had removed the stock 1.125 master cylinder that we would never put on a project and I knew a young kid that raced at the dirt track that needed one, so with customer approval we gave it to him. The LS6 engine was given to me by the customer and will end up in some basic cruiser kinda car or in an employees project car.

It is only lately been the trend to use really nice painted and completed older resto's to build very nice drivers with LS power and new frames. These kinda cars are fun to drive and just a lot cheaper. We have quite a few of these projects going on, there is no concern to just park the car where ever and have fun with the car without worry.

We inventory (list) and return all take off and unused parts to the owner. They can do what they wish with them. Or if they are not interested in them, we have them sign a release giving us ownership thus doing what we want with them (sell, donate, scrap etc).

Most of the original frames, wheels/tires, and drivetrains go on Craigslist or eBay when the cars are disassembled. We generally try to re-use as much of the original trim as possible since it tends to fit better then the re-pop stuff. The interiors usually get tossed unless the owner wants it back. Not too much of a market for warn out door panels, front bench seats, and carpet. If the stuff is in nice condition, or worth while, it will go on ebay. Some things are re-used, or used as mock up parts. The bucket seats from our green Chevelle ended up getting re-worked and are now in our C10. We do sell some stuff on eBay, but it is generally more of a hassle than it is worth.

When my car was at DSE they asked what I wanted to do with all of it, some of it I kept, some will be sold/traded, the rest went to the scrap pile.

Thanks for the replies guys, I was just curious as to how that worked, I am glad stuff is recycled or reused and ebayed (and even given to the needy :P) not just thrown into the landfill.

Nobody ever wants any of there left over interior parts back. I have a dash out of a 71 Cuda sitting in storage along with a whole bunch of headliner rods for Camaros. and other odds and ends
